Afternoon Tea at the Angel in Monmouthshire

We celebrated our anniversary gift of afternoon tea at The Angel Hotel and cannot praise it highly enough .There was a choice of delicious savouries and the sweet selection was superb.There was an endless choice of the most unusual teas and the staff gave excellent recommendations to go with the food What we took from our visit along with the wonderful food was the amazing attention the staff gave us .They were helpful, friendly, knowledgeable about the products they were serving and so attentive.Great afternoon tea and great staff .Thankyou.

We came to The Angel today for belated birthday celebrations for my sister in law. The festive afternoon was incredible, especially the warm savoury selection. The staff were amazing, very friendly and attentive. I look forward to returning

What a lovely way to spend an afternoon!! We started with the top tier of the cake stand with warm, freshly baked savouries - all delicious. A selection of perfectly cut finger sandwiches followed. We then needed a little break before going onto the sweet offerings! To drink, I went for a hibiscus flower herbal infusion which was very light and refreshing. My husband had coffee, and a simple but nice touch of bringing a fresh cup with a second pot of coffee, and fresh plates for the scones. We followed with warm scones, jam and clotted cream, a mini clementine trifle and an exquisite selection of cakes. We couldn’t possibly manage them all so left with a cake box for later. Quite expensive at £92 for 2, but a real treat for a special occasion.

Without doubt, the best afternoon tea. The standard of service and the quality of the food are second to none. Beautiful dining room, tasteful decor, everything was presented so well with excellent attention to detail. Our waiter was attentive, professional and charming and made us feel so welcome and at home. The savoury delights and sandwiches were delicious followed by a beautiful selection of cakes and scones. A lovely selection, so much so, that we took little boxes of treats we couldn’t finish home with us. The visit was for my mum’s birthday and the waiter presented her with a birthday treat, so thoughtful. From start to finish a wonderful experience and will definitely visit again and highly recommended.

Without doubt, the best afternoon tea ever! Outstanding in every way. Beautiful room with stylish decor, warm welcome, catered for dietary requirements without fuss and fabulous selection of treats! Warm savouries on the top tier, delicious and varied selection of exquisite cakes, superb sandwiches, gorgeous scones and an individual Eton Mess! The choice of teas was extensive and the attentive service from the Head Waiter and his team was exceptional. A wonderful experience; will most definitely return! I came here with my wife for afternoon tea on her birthday. My wife is gluten free and they were happy to provide her with a gluten free tea. The top tier had warm items such as a sausage roll. The other two tiers contained cakes and sandwiches. Total cost was £92. Service was ok but we were disappointed that they forgot initially to serve us scones, cream and jam. These were given us in a doggy bag when we left. So one star deducted!

Saturday 6th May 2023 - Afternoon Tea (well lunch really) for a family of 4. We have been here a few times and it is consistently excellent. Very attentive and helpful, professional service, simply excellent food, and in a lovely room. The hotel is pristine clean. There is always plenty of food, so you invariably have a bag at the end to take away what you couldn't eat. Lovely sandwiches, fabulous savouries, and divine puds, plus of course a selection of wonderful teas. It's a real experience. You do not have to dress up; I was wearing shorts and a T shirt. Highly recommended.

Superb.......I'd heard good reports and afternoon tea was even better in reality.... an awesome range of teas to choose from, a great selection of sandwiches, savories, and cakes.....and above all very kind and skilled staff-you could not have looked after us any better-Thank you. If you're thinking of going, then do give them a go......

We had a lovely, relaxing afternoon tea on Sunday. The food was incredibly varied and delicious and the unlimited teas were excellent. Our waiter was so helpful and friendly and couldn't do enough for us. One of our party is expecting a baby next month and she was treated with the most consideration with regards her dietary requirements. We were all delighted with our experience and will definitely book again.

Afternoon tea for vegans in most tearooms is usually impossible, however The Angel excels! Each of us received 3 tiers of delicious treats. Beginning with 5 different and enticing mouthwatering warm savouries, a further tier of 4 different sandwiches, the last tier displayed 4 different cakes, plus a further dish of fruits and finally, warm scones with cream and jam ALL VEGAN! We really appreciated the efforts of talented chefs with exactly the imaginative approach we can only dream of, almost never found however in most restaurants and tea rooms. The Angel demonstrates very capably, just how fabulous a vegan afternoon tea can be, nobody is left out. The superb range of high quality unusual teas accompanying the food is spectacular too, each offering skilfully chosen and well sourced. Every tea arrives beautifully presented, in glass or exquisite Japanese iron teapots. We selected 5 different pots between 2 of us, the generosity of the tea matched the abundance of the food. Finally, the staff were friendly, knowledgeable, attentive and very professional. The Wedgewood Room is elegant and feels well cared for. This is a very special place for discerning tea enthusiasts, I can’t recommend it highly enough for vegan and vegetarian visitors.

We stayed for dinner bed and breakfast (rather than high tea) and were so impressed with everything. The hotel is very comfortable and we really didn’t want to leave our room! Anyway, we did and just as well because the food was very special and staff were friendly and attentive. We shall return for another special occasion. The hotel is smart but unpretentious and the people running it really know what they are doing. We would highly recommend this as an excellent place to stay in mid Wales.

we visited with my friend visiting from Canada. we had just returned from a Viking cruise and I wanted to treat her to a typical high tea. we were both celebrating our 60th birthday so we asked for sparking wine with our high tea, which obviously was not part of the package. we then asked for 2 more glasses of sparking wine from a passing member of staff, only to be told it was not her department. eventually a waiter appeared and when I asked for two more sparking wines he said - you will have to pay for these!!! our embrassment in front of our Canadian Friend as she asked if they thought we didn't have the money to pay. from the moment we entered the service was poor/none existent I had to request top up of water. although we had previously had a meal in the restaurant we had no been impressed by the service, but thought that might of been a one off. the staff could do with some customer service training I would think we are their target demographic and I would expect a warmer welcome and not be treated as an inconvenience.

Simply unbelievable. From the quality of the individual bites of food, to the seasoning in everything, to the choice of unlimited tea and the fantastic knowledge of the staff to talk to you about it, to the ever-so-slightly-warm scones straight out of the oven, to the attentiveness of everyone to complete your experience. There's a reason this has been voted so highly as one of the best in Wales. In my opinion, this is the best in the entire UK. If you didn't know the quality and eminence of the hotel, you'd raise your eyebrows at the price. But the simple matter is having experienced Afternoon Tea here, you'd pay even more if you had to; simply to experience it again. Definitely go for the High Tea with the savoury pastries, they are simply sublime as is everything here. Just go! :-)

The whole experience was really lacking. The receptionist was surly, we were here fed through to the very packed and noisy room, completely airless and were shown to our table. Someone came with water and we were left for over half an hour. No one...

Had a delicious High Tea at the Angel Hotel. A fantastic selection of sandwiches, savouries and cakes and not forgetting the strawberries and scone to finish too. Lovely surroundings with the staff being very friendly and professional. A great selection of teas on offer (or coffee), in what was a superb way to spend a couple of hours indulging. Would definitely recommend and can’t wait to go back!

An excellent selection of sandwiches, savouries and cakes with endless supplies of tea and coffee - the Angel Afternoon blend tea was lovely. This is the second time we have been and again I was given a voucher for High Tea for 2. I did however feel this time a bit of a “second class citizen” on entering the restaurant as the head waiter insisted I hand over my voucher before sitting down. This was not done in any way discreetly and no-one even offered to take our coats which we were left to hang on the back of our chairs. The staff were very tentative to us throughout but when we were ready to leave, no-one asked us if we had enjoyed our afternoon tea experience or even say good bye. We just walked out of the restaurant, through the hotel lobby and out into the street.

Seriously excellent High Tea this afternoon. An afternoon delight - almost as good as s3x, this made a fantastic birthday treat. Nice room, attentive and courteous staff. And phenomenal vegan treats. The difference between their "Afternoon Tea" and "High Tea" is just £5 per person but the warm savoury items they serve for the extra are the highlight of the meal and worth IMO twice the price. A samosa in the most delicate pastry with rice noodles, an arancini ball, some bouchees with (?) tapanarde and sweet chilli, and a crostini piled high with avocado and tomato. Such skillful cooking. It scarcely needs adding that the sandwiches were very good; the scones lovely; the chocolate cake dreamy (and an extra portion with Happy Birthday iced onto the plate) and a fine range of teas.The sweets that we could manage were placed in a beautiful doggy bag - we look forward to enjoying them tomorrow.I'll be happy to share how good this was on Vegan Facebook groups. Bravo.

We have been here before and the standard of service and quality of the food ,a well lit dining room beautifully laid out,but one thing marred this event was the sight of people’s coats slung over the back of the chairs,why oh why don’t the staff take them away,I know the staff ask and the customers say we’ll put them on the chairs but it really spoils the occasion and looks like a cluttered fish & chip shop, pity really.

First off I'm not give kind of suit and tie guy but misses wanted to go. On approch the car park was very clean and well kept lovely fairy lights in forecourt entrance. We all sat in some comfy seats whilst waiting for our table.We were offered some bubbly wich was a nice way to start the night. ( though I don't drink) We were seated and given menus. 3 valentine courses for £50.00 each. I had soup to start then beef with a lovely sauce then ice cream to finish. Misses had ham hock tureen then chicken and garlic mash. And chock pud to finish.All amazing. Staff were very friendly and professional throughout. Bit strange that we had a different waiter or waitress on every course :-?.Nit a bad thing just an observation.There was a guy playing the piano most of the night. Gents toilets were spot on very clean and tidy.The whole place has an up market feel to it. If ur looking for a venue to treat urself then this could be the place. Whole venue V clean tidy proffecional friendly staff. So all in all misses happy bit posh for me buffoon service and atmosphere was good.worth a visit.

The Angel is a hotel and restaurant in a class of its own, one of the Abergavenny region's highlights. We have both stayed there, a while ago, and more recently eaten there on many occasions, but this was our first visit to sample the Angel's famous afternoon tea. We have had afternoon tea in quite a few other places, at top-end venues in London and Bath, for example, but the Angel's afternoon tea tops them all. The quality is outstanding, finger sandwiches, warm savouries, scones, jam and cream, and lastly the cakes ... not to mention an extraordinary wide choice of teas. All beautifully presented – and what you can't eat you can take home in smarty presented boxes. All in all, this is a real treat, memorable and something special.

Absolutely wonderful High Tea at The Angel earlier this week. I am craving a second plate of their savoury treats as I write... Everything was completely fabulous, from the charming setting to the delicious food, tea & champagne. A special mention needs to be given to the staff who were incredibly friendly and charming. We enjoyed High Tea at the Angel yesterday which was a very pleasant, and relaxing experience. The staff are welcoming, attentive and very accommodating. The food is second to none and even though I arrived famished, I still couldn't eat everything and came away with the famous Angel cake box. Highly recommended for ANY occasion or just to spoil yourself!

What can I say.....the High Tea was worth every single penny of the £31.00

From beginning to end this was a wonderful experience. Some might think the £31 was expensive, don't be fooled, it most definitely was not, worth every penny and more. The ambiance, service, fine bone China, savouries, cakes, scones and sandwiches were all of the highest quality and beautiful. The selection of teas was outstanding and reading all about them was part of the enjoyment. I would return many times over but for the fact I live 2 hours away.The Ritz of London has competition..

Visited with a friend and managed to park in the hotel car park. If this is full there is a car park across the road behind the hotel.

We had a thrill of a time at The Angel’s High Tea. Most exciting was the ten page tea menu. What a treat to read about and explore all those teas. And you can try as many as you’d like. We loved the savory food particularly and the sweet things were great fun to eat as well. Everything came on tiers and was just as excellent as what one might get at the top London hotels. The big difference being the quality of the servers and the price was ama I got reasonable for what was included.

High Tea at The Angel purports to be one of the best outside of London. Having sampled Afternoon Teas at The Lanesborough, Hyde Park Corner, The Langham, and Fortnum and Mason, I can confirm that tea at The Angel rates better than all of these with the possible exception of The Lanesborough. To be fair, at The Lanesborough one is entertained in a glorious banqueting room with conservatory, palms and live piano music, which notches up another star. Most of the London teas offer style over substance, things dangling from wires, globe like creations circling around culinary planets which are amazing to behold but disappointing to eat.

Afternoon tea at The Angel is lovely; as usual it was epic! Great choice of teas, lovely cakes and savouries and smiling helpful and charming staff. What's not to like?

Our first time at the Angel for this treat , nice ambience and welcome , I would expect a better level of service, no one talked through the options and we were just left for some time before anyone arrived to take the order. We did order two cocktails and waited . The cocktails took 30 minutes to arrive and got to the table a good 5 minutes after the food and tea arrived . In all from seating to food took 25 minutes . The sandwiches were lovely , the waitress although nice and polite didn’t really know what was on the plates ‘quiche type thing’ was one description.

It's the fourth time I've had an afternoon tea at the Angel hotel and it never disappoints. Delicious food and excellent service. I would highly recommend it.

Simple lunch of a salad and cheese sandwich on sourdough. Perfect use of good ingredients treated simply. Lovely food and great attentive service. Sat outside in the rear courtyard a peacefull haven in the town centre. Really recommend and will return

After finishing the meal, watching a waiter almost knock my Father( who walks with a stick) over as he forced his way through the same doorway, complete with tray in hand was a bad way to end lunch. The lack of apology was worse. The written complaint to the hotel was apparently ignored, twice. Pretty bad all round. Won't be going back.

Four of us booked at the Angel for a traditional High Tea and we were impressed by the service, food presentation and the overall experience. It certainly lived up to the aspect of a Traditional High Tea

A fantastic anniversary high tea after a wander around Abergavenny and surroundings. Whilst not cheap, the food was very high quality and the tea superb. Huge thanks to Patrick for his warm welcome and exceptional service. We ate strategically..... with the more solid cakes boxed up and taken home once we were full. Probably the best afternoon/high tea we have ever eaten!

Not a cheap restaurant but the quality of the food and the ingredients is the reason. Also they have super attentive waiting staff who move at the speed of light and serve with a smile. My only criticism is they could bring in a dog ban as three times our meal was disturbed by dogs passing each other and barking loudly!

We visited as we heard that the Afternoon Tea had won awards as the best afternoon tea outside of London. I highly recommend going for the High Tea with the savoury pastries option as the standard tea might be a little on the sweet and sugary side. It was a lovely afternoon on a bit of a rainy day but I am not sure it is the best I have had outside London. The service was a bit mixed: the lady who I think was the manageress was fantastic but the other two people who served us were not up to her standard at all. We had to ask a few times what the items were as it was all said so quickly it was very hard to comprehend. The food was very typically English and old fashioned which is lovely as some places have moved away from this and therefore it is a proper English Afternoon tea - ham and mustard, egg mayonnaise, smoked salmon and cucumber, and coronation chicken sandwiches - could it be more English? I

Took our first time travellers from Florida for Afternoon Tea and they were delighted. Loved the ceremony and attention to detail, the lovely food and the bountiful teas delivered on demand.

Afternoon tea was a disgrace. The staff were rude & impatient. The food was of very low standard. I fail to see what other peaople see in the place, but then again it depends on your own standards. There are so many better places to goto in Abergavenny. Really sad that there is such a business in Abergavenny, they let the whole town down. Needless to say I won't be back after our 2nd rate experience.

Best afternoon tea in the county. Knowledgeable and friendly staff. Visited in dec so food had a more festive theme, which made it much more memorable. Lots of food, too much to eat but boxed up for us to take away.

I took my mum and daughter to the Sunday afternoon tea. We had a lovely time, the tea was plentiful and the cakes delightful. The service was excellent, they took photos for us and we were not rushed at all. We had a separate stand which was vegetarian only which I was grateful they understood you can’t mix meat/fish with vegetarian food (not everyone understands this). We had lots of treats left so brought these home in lovely little boxes with pink ribbon to enjoy later. This was a treat for my mum and she was delighted with the whole afternoon which made it even more special.

Excellent service and very friendly helpful staff, It’s our favourite place to get together, we are local and the hotel has its own parking, great choice of food suitable for all tastes. The afternoon tea is by far the best in the area.

The Angel Hotel in Abergavenny is one of the best places for Afternoon Tea. We had the High Tea option which included a warm savoury selection as well as the sandwiches, pastries, warm scones and strawberries and cream. There was a good selection of teas and coffee. Everything was freshly prepared, presented beautifully and delicious. The service was excellent. We can thoroughly recommend this venue for afternoon tea. We will be back.

Took High Tea here on Sunday, and it was a fabulous treat, lasting over 2 hours.

This Hotel is in the heart of Abergavenny & is very welcoming, accepting dogs into the bar area where you can get a drink & order lunch from a varied menu. The bar area is very popular with the locals & the staff are very kind & polite. We had a lunchtime sandwich with all the trimmings which was very acceptable.

The service and quality of afternoon tea we experienced this afternoon was truly excellent. We found the staff extremely attentive bringing a constant supply of drinks And the quality of the cakes, sandwiches and savouries were enjoyed by all.

My first visit to the Angel was with friends in the first week of July and I was so impressed by the afternoon tea that a retuned for lunch with my family ten days later.

A bit expensive but worth saving up for. The surrounings, food, decor and staff makes you feel like you have stepped into another world for an hour or two.

We enjoyed an excellent lunch in the bar area of the hotel, which offers a very cosy and friendly atmosphere. The food, drinks and service were very good and we were especially impressed with the wide range of vegetarian dishes which was on offer; the beetroot and lentil Wellington is a real tip. Well worth a visit!

The afternoon tea at the angel was lovely and the service couldn’t be faulted. My one suggestion however would be that you are told what sandwiches and cakes you are having in advance so that you could let the waiter/waitress know if you don’t like a particular one and have it replaced with another.

I found the afternoon tea offering at the Angel to be very good and at realistic prices. Its definitely worth a look

Myself and my Husband came to celebrate the fact our baby is due to be born soon and was ecstatic to see they were more than happy to cater for vegans. We had the most amazing high tea and was treated with great respect and friendliness by all staff. I was amazed with the quality of the vegan food I was served and the amazing taste of it all. My Husband was also over the moon with his 'normal' one too! The array of teas and coffe you can choose from is fantastic also. We look forward to returning.

Came here last week for another afternoon tea, this time for a friends baby shower. Never disappoints plenty of sandwiches, cakes & unlimited tea and coffee. All delicious. The building is tasteful and decorated superb. Staff kind and attentive. Will certainly return.

Went to celebrate our wedding anniversary and had high tea with glass of bubbly. It was brilliant. Service excellent and food fantastic. Worth every penny.

Came here yesterday and the high tea was the best afternoon tea I have had. Service was incredible and they were more than happy to amend the high tea for my husbands no cheese request. Everything tasted amazing and nothing was to much trouble :)

The staff were attentive but not overbearing. The waiter gave good advice on tea selection. The savouries were excellent , the sandwiches were tasty and the cakes were good but too much to eat, then along came the scones and cream, too much so got them put in a box to take home. Forgot to mention the strawberries and fresh cream. Second visit but this time it was high tea, will be going back.

Booked High Tea for a friends 50th birthday whilst we were visiting the area, a group of 6 ladies. We have experienced Afternoon Tea in many hotels and tea rooms and I have to say this was one of the best. Great selection of sandwiches, savoury snacks and cakes and the best mini trifles that I have ever tasted with unlimited tea, coffee or hot chocolate. The cakes that we were too full to eat were boxed up for us to take home. Fabulous.

Stunning afternoon tea with daughter, lovely surroundings and quiet, efficient staff ( especially the waiter with the moustache and French accent!)

Tea was in a lovely elegant room with a roaring log fire and all the tables were ready set with fine bone china cups, saucers and plates on white cotton table linen and the addition of plants etc added to the look of the room.

We were welcomed by a member of staff and advised on the easiest way to gain entrance with a wheelchair and given assistance. The Afternoon Tea was superb and had the fillings we had requested. It was finished off with an anniversary greeting written chocolate on a plate.

I absolutely adore The Angel Hotel in Abergavenny. Every December I book to attend with my mother and we are never disappointed.

Wedding Anniversary afternoon tea was superb! Faultless quality ,just two words describe this visit. Always a favourite with us both and never fails to live up to expectations.......first class

Thursday 17th January 2019. Tea for 2 with a glass of Prosecco each. This was a gift from our son, and what a gift. We actually booked this for 2pm and treated it as late lunch. The Angel hotel is lovely, everything immaculate (including the loos which is always important), and all tastefully decorated. Clearly no expense spared. There is parking behind the hotel in the hotel's car park, and if that is full (which is often) simply across the road is municipal parking, and plenty of it, so finding a place for your car nearby should never be a problem. The Prosecco was good quality - not the usual thin fizz. Then you get a menu of the numerous teas on offer (we ordered ours to come a little later as we savoured the fizz). The food arrives on a three tier cake stand (one such cake stand per couple). On the top level were delicious warm savouries - sausage rolls, coronation chicken, prawns, etc. I of each. Mid layer had cakes and pastries, and bottom tier some gorgeous sandwiches with good quality fillings - eg excellent beef, ham, and smoked salmon. In addition we had a lovely little trifle each and, of course, a scone with jam and cream. Top quality ingredients and all beautifully and freshly made. Am not a big tea drinker, but my wife said it was excellent. Professional and friendly service. There is an awful lot to eat, so they are used to boxing up what you cannot finish so that you can take it home. Abergavenny has some nice shops so it's worth a stroll around afterwards to help the food go down! Highly recommended.

Love what the Griffith family have done to various venues around Aber - such detail and impeccable taste. But this is sadly subjugated at their flagship venue, The Angel. Out in the central courtyard, there's a hut that looks like it's been borrowed from Plymouth Xmas market and music that is totally incongruous to the surroundings, ie banging dated 90s house/rave music. It's all gone a tad footballers wives and not in a good way.

Having been blown away by my first afternoon tea here I have been back a subsequent two times and each time the food has been superb. I echo the sentiments that this is better than the Ritz as the savouries and cakes are made to taste superb and not just look pretty! Booked again for February. Cannot say enough good things about this place-and the staff are utterly delightful as well! Congratulations to The Angel.

Visited with work colleagues for festive high tea. We had pre booked and was impressed with how easy this was. I had pre warned staff that there was 1 vegan and 1 gluten free in our party.

Afternoon tea here is better than at the Ritz, this is according to the two ladies who have been to both venues! The service is superb, attentive without being obtrusive, the tables are laid out in pristine cloth and there's plenty of elbow room. The selection of teas is admirable and if you want coffee, that's ok.
