Ainsworth's Traditional Fish & Chips in Gwynedd

We were recommended Ainsworth's when on holiday, and it was definitely worth the detour...best fish and chips we've had in years! We were first through the door when it opened, but it looks like all fish is cooked fresh to order, so allow a 10-15min wait. It was too far to takeaway back to our accommodation, so we perched at the little counter in the window to eat, which was fine, and chatted with the owner whilst we ate...he's very enthusiastic about his food, and was interested in where else we had tried locally and how it compared (nowhere near as good!). The largest portion of chips is a "medium", but x3 portions was too much for x4 of us. Fish was cooked beautifully...he literally battered it in front of us, and it was moist and perfectly cooked inside, and beautifully crispy batter on the outside. We'll definitely be back...

Fantastic food, very reasonably priced. Really tasty fish, proper hand cut chips and all cooked to perfection. All the usual trimmings on offer, mushy peas, gravy etc. Just what I needed after a long shift with coastguard! Highly recommended.

Genuinely passionate about quality fish and chips and it shows in the standard of the food they serve. Freshly cooked to order so piping hot and not greasy. The batter was particularly worthy of praise. Very highly recommended

Stayed in caernarfon and had fish and chips from hear food was cooked while we waited staff were friendly and good fun food was the best fish and chips I've had fish was crispy and the chips were cooked just right not greasy at all a pleasure to eat from there thanks

Friendly & made fresh. Good fish portion & great mushy peas.

Gorgeous mushy peas (I bought two pots to take back home, that's how much I liked them!), generous cod portion, and everything super clean. There is also a wee counter where customers can eat; it was raining buckets, so I had dinner in there. Staff members are lovely and it is located very close to the bus station, so I could have dinner and come back to my place in Bangor rather quickly. Will definitely return to this Caernarfon chippy often.

Not sure if it was an off day As normally enjoy having a treat from here. But was very disapointed Found the fish and chips rather dry Only a small laddle of mushy peas and curry sauce in the carton not enough to cover the chips No option to buy a larger carton Very clean but rather unorganized and chaotic, long wait despite pre ordering, and wasnt sure whos chips they were serving next I like to know when its my turn and be asked how much salt and vinegar I want etc and if i want the fish and chips together etc The person who was frying the chips was also serving them out even though there was a person at the till and seemed to be rushing Ordered x 2 mini fish, chips and mushy peas And 1 standard cod and chips and curry sauce £25!!

Great chippy, we were staying local and just fancied fish and chips and this little chippy didn’t disappoint great food cooked while we waited so so fresh and tasty… definitely recommend

Great food, all freshly made, so probably best to use their app and order in advance for collection, or just wait the 15 mins or so for it to cook. Responsible packaging, only the lid from the peas wasn't recyclable everything else was. Separated chips and fish in the cardboard carton too, don't know why everyone doesn't do this, far superior. Great tadte, crunchy batter, nice chips. We would go here again when in Caernarfon.

Chose this shop because of reading reviews and we were not disappointed. The best fish, chips and mushy peas we’ve tasted for a very long time. Light crispy batter on the fish and plenty of chips. And packed in a box. Staff were very friendly - def recommend.

Award winning chip shop. The cod was very nice and I think not too bad for £8, everything else was small portions, overpriced and pretty average tasting to be honest. It was fairly busy when we went in, which rapidly became obvious why, yes the food is cooked fresh which is good I suppose but they literally cooked one order at a time, not a load of chips and 5 people have ordered fish and 6 people want a sausage.... one order then the next order then the next order. You get my award for the longest I have ever waited from ordering to receiving my food. 🏆⌛😴🏆 yes I nearly fell asleep.

Excellent chippy. Fast and friendly service, clean and new premises and, an odd comment, but a very nicely packed box! We thought the fish was really fresh, cut properly and battered really well. Chips were great too. If we’re back in the area we would definitely return. Thanks

Can't complain about the food decent chips, I've been twice for sausage and chips which were good both times. I'm not sure why it warrants a 20 - 30 min wait each time, from what I see everyone has to wait for ages

Fish and chips were very nice and tasted great, cooked to a good standard. Staff were polite and friendly, we did have to wait 30 mins after ordering as it was so busy with a que outside , but this is a positive as many people must like this chip shop! Would revisit if back in the area!

Clean, friendly and the fish was excellent! Soft, light and crispy( not oily!) Probably one of the best fish and chips I have had in England.

It's a take-away - the fish & chips we bought were fresh and tasty. Unfortunately, on Saturday eve there was a long wait, in an increasingly hot shop.

Excellent food, excellent customer service and friendly staff. I’ve never tased anything like the fresh cod and chips before. All the food is cooked while you wait or you can order online and pick up so it’s nice and golden crispy and the cod is out of this world tasty. 10/10 just awesome.

Food looks great all cooked fresh. Waited nearly an hour in shop for 4 cod and chips. Everybody very unhappy/angry. Problem comes from poor kitchen management. Wouldn't use again.

Up from Liverpool for a couple of days .. went to chip shop . staff were lovely an friendly husband got fish chips mushy peas it’s was unreal i got pie chip’s gravy peas best i’ve ever had . Would recommend this chip shop to everyone place was spoitless clean too . 5 star all the way .

It’s a take away fish and chips place in Caerfernon. Saw a long line waiting for their orders while we passed by. We tried it the next day, thankfully, no more line that day. Staff was friendly and fast and would explain the menu choices patiently. We especially liked the cod fish which is more tender than haddock. They accept card payments. Serving size is huge and filling (we ordered the standard one).

Ran out of chicken burgers so made me a double burger with 6 chicken stripes. It was good! Proper good! The owner asked me to let him know what I thought... would 100% get again!

What a great spot. Without a doubt, the best fish and chips I’ve eaten. We had the meal deal (pictured) which was huge and great value for money. The owner was welcoming and friendly. Be willing to wait for your order because each portion is freshly made and well worth the wait!

Tuesday night and ordered 10 portions. Excellent fish and chips . Freshly cooked to perfection while we had a pint next door. Would recommend.

Was overpriced (£23 for fish & chips x2) and the service was poor. Had to wait 25 minutes and the girl serving didn't seem to know what was going on!

Everything cooked fresh while you wait. High quality lightly battered haddock our favourite and the spicy curry to die for. A must when visiting Caernarfon.

I googled Best Fish and Chip shop in Caernarfon, it came up with this one. 5* hygiene rating Looked spotless Fish 10/10 what I’d expect being on the Coast. Chips 9/10 Cook to order so takes a little while but Very Good 👍 5 Stars from me and I’ll be back next time I visit .

Great fish and chips, a bit expensive but worth a price. 3 sauces to chose from, 50p each. The only thing I would change is a free fork and napkin with a meal. Really nice staff, I highly recommend the place. Thanks

I was in the area for two nights and went here based off the reviews. I wasn’t disappointed. Lovely family run business, great couple :) My kids absolutely loved it too. Fresh meaty cod in a crisp crunchy batter, the chips tastes great too. They had ran out of curry sauce which was shame but the mushy peas were great. I would have liked more vinegar on the chips and a slice of lemon would have been nice.

Easily the best in North Wales - Milky flakes of cod in glorious batter with wonderful chips and delicious home made mushy peas! Staff fantastic and helpful and friendly. Many thanks to the lady in the garage who recommended you!!! We will be back!

Genuinely…. The best chip shop I’ve been too. It’s my second visit and they never disappoint. The lady who serves us was so helpful and gave us great advice on places we can go to go with the kids. AMAZING Trust me… if you go here you won’t be disappointed 😃

Over a 40 minute wait, with absolutely no heads up whilst staff standing around.

I found this chip shop confusing ...4 people serving but not serving ...and to charge for forks and bags ridiculous..and charge 50p for a sachet of ketchup..seem to make a simple job hard..

Best fish n chips ive had in a long time

I was on holiday looking for some great fish and chips to enjoy on the sea front. I came across this place and I wasn't disappointed. The fish and chips were excellent quality however what I enjoyed the most was the owners attitude. He was friendly, informative and funny even cracking the odd dad joke.

Visited at 6pm on Saturday, 25th March 2023. We are local but hadn’t been here for a long time. Thought it was time for a visit after reading they had come in the top 50 best fish and chips shops in the UK. I had ordered and paid online and selected a pick up time. It was very busy when I arrived. Told them I had ordered online. Shop was very clean and modern. The owners who were frying were so busy and really couldn’t have gone any quicker. They were very friendly. I had booked a 6.10pm slot but didn’t get my order till nearer to 630pm. I understand there is a wait as they were busy but I thought I would have got my order sooner. Anyway they were worth the wait. The fish and chips were lovely and we were very impressed. Pipping hot and fresh. We will definitely come again. Not sure if we will order online though as we still had to wait our turn.

After reading all the rave reviews saying this is the best fish and chip shop people have ever been to, we were really inspired to try! It was a 20 minute wait, long for a chip shop, which is fine, waiting for the best fish and chips ever! However, we were very confused as they weren’t. Have had much nicer ones unfortunately! In fact they were rather brown, almost seemed overcooked somehow. Don’t know if it was an off day or what but they weren’t great sadly. Very average. The staff were pleasant, it was running well and clean.

These were very good chips. Well cooked, not greasy and plenty of them. Not many bad bits either. All fish cooked to order. Offer of cod or haddock, tempted to have haddock this time, quality with a nice crispy batter, although i always tend to leave the batter as it is just a cooking aid. Easy to recommend to others.

The most delicious and generous fish and chips I have experienced, and lived up to the recommendations of local people.

They have the best chicken burgers , it was so crispy and freshly cooked. Wouldn’t go anywhere else , Highly recommend! :)

The fish and chips are delicious. They are cooked to order and therefore service is on the slow side - although quicker if you order on line.

Always our go to although we live in Llpg now. Can't beat the quality, few places come close but all fall short. Fish always for me, missus loves the chicken fillet bites (proper chicken pieces not processed).

Came here on a quietist, cold, December evening, and got the best fish and chips I have ever had, anywhere. Cooked to order fish, which was cooked to perfection, and a generous size, with chips, also well cooked, without the grease that can often spoil fish and chips. Added to it being a friendly place, I cannot recommend it more highly.

Excellent fish and chips, all orders are freshly prepared and it shows. in the taste - lovely light batter and great chips. This can mean a wait in busy periods. But do what the locals do (as I discovered) order ahead on line and then arrive to time - great system. We were visiting - just wish we had this chippy as our local!!

Had a lovely, fun conversation with the owners tonight. My husband had Standard Fish and Medium chips along with a steak and kidney pie. All very good and he quite enjoyed it. For a change of pace, I had a breaded cutlet and potato scallops...

Great customer service, friendly staff the food was delicious. I loved the scallops how nice and small they were and not greasy. Freshly cooked chios and what you want. Highly reccomend Ainsworth absolutely amazing. Will defiantly be going again.

Went into Ainsworth's this afternoon for some dinner, we had to wait a little bit for ours to be served but I must say everything we ate was freshly cooked, we didn't mind waiting 15 minutes or so for excellent, piping hot fresh food. Makes a nice change from the normal luke warm 3 hour old food from other chip shops. Thank you.

Great place to get some quality fish and chips. Can be ordered ahead on the website or in person. All packaging is paper or card. No parking outside, but spaces nearby.

Ordered two large chips and jumbo sausages one with curry sauce which came to nearly £15. Had to wait about 15 minutes for the chips to cook which were over done and had a very small ladle of curry sauce which made the chips dry,...

Checked the reviews before visiting here on a mini break as there are several chippies to choose from. Everything was freshly cooked to order and tasted great. It's take away only but that suited us. Great staff too. Would highly recommend.
