Quite possibly the best food I've eaten in a long time. At first when I saw the steak being brought out to a family member I regretted my decision to get the venison. However, my plate followed within seconds and my disappointment at my decision immediately dispersed. The food was melt in the mouth perfection and the whole ambience of the meal was delightful. The menu was varied and offered something for all tastes. Would recommend to anyone.

What a superb dining experience.Menu was simple, but had great variety.Super tasty nibble provided while we considered the menu, including fresh baked bread with was welcome but didn't detract from the rest of the meal with unnecessary bulk. The flavours were superb!! Not too much not too little, just right. If goldilocks did fine dining this was it!!

One night visit, food was outstanding and service super friendly and helpful. We stayed here on the first night of a visit to Northern Ireland. The hotel had been recommended for its food and didn’t disappoint. whilst Ardtara isn’t super modern and glossy, that isn’t really the purpose of Country house hotels (leave that to the city places). The food is the main reason for visiting and it was worth it. Delicious three courses, gorgeous fresh champagne before dinner and discreet, professional (and Covid secure) service. Def recommended.

Wonderful Sunday lunch. Set in beautiful surroundings Ardara Country House has great reputation for fine dining which sets the scene of anticipation as you arrive. From the moment on entering the hotel and restaurant we were pampered by the staff. However this not a stuffy no kids establishment, families, couples old and young were welcomed here, we felt very much at home and hope to stay over some time.My wife had the roast beef and I had lamb roast with all the vegetables and roast and mash potatoes amazing tasting food. However the little touches like fresh baked wheaten bread made with Guinness was a tasty start to our meal.Best leave the rest for you to come and try the food for yourself, I certainly will be back soon. Thanks Ardara for a lovely lunch and friendly genuine staff.

We availed of the Lounge menu today and food was first class. It did take 45 mins from our arrival to our food being served so be patient, if you are in a hurry it won’t be enjoyable. When the food arrived we were a little underwhelmed, big plates and the food looked tiny. No salad garish, no lemon with the fish, peas etc but as soon as we took our first bite we were both raving about how good it was. Dessert and tea/coffee was served much quicker and although limited to three choices, one of which was just sorbet, we also enjoyed this course. A great way to spend an afternoon and very enjoyable lunch. We recommend eating in one of the lounges, during our two hour visit there was no one in the main restaurant and we were glad we opted for the cosier setting.

What a special evening we had. The setting and Country House are a beautiful Victorian style. We were greeted warmly and had a fabulous meal in a lovely setting. The mid music and lighting were appropriate. The table staff were all young girls but all polite, helpful and unobtrusive. We heard at the end of the night that the Head chef had actually come in to work even though it was his birthday. The food was very tasty. Not a massive choice but 6 or 7 starters and the same for mains and desserts was fine. Fish, vegetarian and several meats on offer. Sides were available too. It was really a cut above. Everything tasted just that little bit better than the average restaurant. We think they deserve the reputation and accolades. Not cheap at £40 a head but you definitely do get what you pay for. Thanks Ardtara. Not our last visit we hope. I think it is also worth mentioning that they honoured a voucher that was a little out of date. We have not had this experience everywhere we have gone. Thanks for that too.

We stayed at Ardtara for our wedding anniversary, and had the dinner, bed and breakfast package. We were warmly greeted by Sean who showed us round the beautiful old building before taking us up to a fantastic room with a huge bed and lovely gas fire. We had dinner under the canopy of the former billiards room, and what a dinner! A little bag of pork scratchings with an apple puree were delicious, this was followed up with a cauliflower soup so light I wasn't sure I was eating it, there was beautiful breads to go with the soup. We both then had the chicken liver and foie gras parfait, sublime. I had the lamb, my wife the pork, both served with potatoes and veg, we then had a rhubarb sorbet followed up with the most perfect mascarpone and peach souffle I have ever tasted. The service was wonderful, the wine divine. We enjoyed a great night, a huge breakfast, all in all an absolutely brilliant stay.

I was delighted with the overall experience of dining here. We were met on arrival and given the choice of having a drink in the bar or going straight to table. The early evening menu offered a reasonable choice over three courses for £25. Our order was taken in good time and we were seated in the restaurant about ten minutes later. I found the service timely and friendly and the atmosphere quietly relaxing. The food was well presented and cooked to perfection. I opted for the rib eye steak, cooked rare, and it has been some time since I have eaten such a well seasoned and succulent steak. Booked dinner here after seeing a Facebook post that there was still availability and chef Ian Orr would be cooking his two dishes from Saturday Kitchen as part of this evening’s menu. The level of service cannot be faulted, from the warm welcome to the attentive but unobtrusive service throughout dinner. After relaxing in the lounge we were shown to our table and served canapés in the form of pork bonbons and broccoli soup served with Guinness wheaten and wild garlic focaccia. All were excellent and lead into the starters. I chose the turf smoked beef, which was delicious, while my husband went for the Saturday Kitchen dish of monkfish cheeks. He also chose the Saturday Kitchen hay smoked lamb which was presented in its box with the smoking hay before being taken back into the kitchen for plating up. It was excellent as was my main of 24 hour braised beef shoulder which melted in the mouth. Our waiter recommended the brown sugar panna cotta served with cinnamon doughnuts. I’m not generally a dessert person, but this dessert was amazing! All in all it was an excellent meal with first class service. Next time we’ll definitely stay over!

We dined here recently. It'd been over a year since we last visited and the whole experience was better from every point of view.Valerie was warm and welcoming as always. The restaurant was quite busy compared to our last visit which was nice. Bottled craft beer was available in the bar which lovely to sit in whilst perusing the menu.I found it hard to choose what to eat from the menu as there were so many nice options.I settled for the mozzarella salad, the fillet of beef and the lemon tart, all of which were delicious. I was delighted to see the reintroduction of the canapés prior to the starter. The small soup, beef croquettes and breads were delicious. The only negative was the price of the espresso which was in fact a 'nespresso' capsule. It was priced at £3.00. Extortionately priced given I could have had one at home at the cost of 32p.Apart from that we had a lovely time.

We've been dining here since Ardtara opened its doors as a hotel and restaurant. It was always very good for both service and food but I have to say that ever since Brownes became the owners the level of ambience, food, and service has steadily risen to heights that you would never suspect hidden away in Mid-Ulster.Last night the service was exemplary and the food was absolutely divine. The fact that you can pair a glass of wine with any (or all!) of the courses offered in the Table d'hôte is a lovely idea . Sean showed us to our room which was refreshing compared to the usual your room number is.......our room was one of the large rooms at the front of the house with an amazing four windows allowing the light and the outside in. On opening one of the windows are you hear is silence and the odd bird singing peace on earth. We dinedin the former billiards room and had an amazing meal served by very attentive staff. On arrival (we were 10 mins late) we were given a broad smile and a harty welcome and directed into the small bar. After a drink we were shown into the main dining room. The menu was a treat for the eyes and the choices outstanding. For a set lunch menu it was quite wide ranging in starters, mains and dessert. It was a case (for me) to take advantage of the chance to taste food that I would possibly not have ventured into. From start to finish it was staggering. Visually it was beautiful. Having eaten with my eyes I could no wait to taste it.Perfect in every way, so much so that I never used salt or black pepper which I normally do. This place is a magnet and a tribute to Chief Orr and his team , both in the kitchen and front of house. We cannot rate Ardtara House highly enough and eagerly await our chance to repeat our experience.

Staying in this rural retreat is reminiscent of times gone by. Fireplace in the bedroom, sash windows, sunny drawing room, gazebo in the garden and the sound of gravel when one is approaching the front door. Delicious, mouthwatering and ample food is served morning and night, eleven out of ten for flavour and Lea the waitress at our dining table was terrific. All this old house needed was a mystery and it didnt disappoint. Our breakfasts arrived on the second morning, however, mine was minus one egg. The waitress departed with some haste. I pointed the fact of the missing egg out to another waitress. She didnt respond. Finally, when we were finished our breakfast, I was asked did I want another egg. Well, it was a trifle too late. When I was departing and settling the bill shortly for our lovely stay (after breakfast), I mentioned the strange phenomenon of the egg. The girl told me then that the chef had apologised but that he had cooked me 2 eggs and he had no idea where one of them had gone. Unsolved mystery! Strange but true!

Have been several times to Ardtara over the years but this is the first time since it was taken over. Family occasion which consisted of 20 people (3 of which were children). Very disappointed as we were booked for 2.30pm on a sunday afternoon and it was 3.50 before we got into the room that was reserved for us. 4.30 pm before we got the first course. Very limited choice on menu and quite tiny portions for the price. Service was very slow and got quite a shock when the bill arrived. Unfortunately we have decided not to go back as family had travelled from all over Ireland for this momentous occasion. Food what there was of it was cooked perfectly and tasted good but a little more would have been appreciated for the price that we were charged. This meal came to over £500 but was certainly not worth it.

Took my husband and friends to Ardtara last night for the first time, after hearing great reviews about the food! ! It outlived our expectations. A very warm and friendly welcome when first arriving greeted with a complimentary glass of prosecco, seated straight away in what can only be described as a room full of charm and romance! We tried the taster menu and so glad we did as the food kept coming and the waiter's explained what every dish entailed and how the foods compliment each other. ...each mouthful was euphoric I just cant put into words how to explain how the food is really amazing. ..can I say compliments to the kitchen staff you really know how to impress. ..this food is for people who appreciate fine food and dining, the food is freshly cooked and you have to expect to wait for it to be prepared to perfection. For those people who dont understand this and are complaining about time you would be better at a fast food restaurant, it would suit you better. Cant wait to get back and hopefully stay in one of the beautiful bedrooms .This place is for people who like old world style and antiques please dont change a thing as suggested by one of the complainers it would take away the old charm .Thanks again to all the wonderful friendly staff ALL old and young we had a great night.

Had booking for 8pm, ate our main at 10pm. Given no waiting time at any point. When we asked after an hour of waiting, no one came back to us.No one apologised to us for our wait when we finally sat down just received unprofessional silence. Only when we mentioned our wait did anything happen. We specifically chose not to order a starter as it was so late to eat but a complementary apology starter was thrown in front of us suddenly without choice and was not much consolation. Still no explaination for our wait.It was a very special occasion and we were hugely let down. We spent our evening feeling frustrated and ignored. We were offered a dessert menu when we hadn't even had our main and our drinks took 15 minutes to arrive. Two of us had hake which was over cooked and very tough. As we sat in a very smokey room, we were very upset that our evening could have been saved by service we have received in place with much cheaper prices than Ardtara house dares to charge. If this is the service ... reduce your prices considerably and warn people of the wait.Very disappointed !!!

Third visit to Ardtara on a tasting Thursday and including B & B. What a gem of a place! Just love the congenial atmosphere and calm vibe that emanates throughout this small, but quality venue. Once again the tasting menu served in the atmospheric dining room was superb. From the parsnip and apple amuse bouche with brioche, followed by the pear and walnut salad, pork, cod, beef, pre dessert and chocolate fondant dessert, each course was cleverly compiled with thought, an abundance of flavour, original presentation and with adequate portion sizes to satisfy a healthy appetite. Bedrooms are very spacious and well furnished. Breakfast is usually served in the conservatory and there is a good choice with as much tea and coffee as you could want. All in all this is a very good package and I hope to return again soon.

A true gem of a restaurant. The ingredients are carefully considered, seasonal, local and then treated with great care and skill to produce plates of food that are almost too pretty to eat. Almost thankfully, as when you do eat these creations they are real treats. Perfectly cooked pork belly so the flavour is excellent yet with the correct amount of fat rendered away was spot on. Gurnard for the main course was also a highlight. Lovely to see local fish on the menu. Desserts were again a perfect mix of sweet salty caramel with sharp jammy fruit elements or white truffle cheesecake with similarly complementary accompaniments. There was also a home baked birthday cake to round off the experience. And a complete bargain at just over £20 for starter, main. Dessert plus home baked breads and hors d'oeuvre to prepare your palette.

Just returned from a meal in this restaurant and being so disappointed I felt I had to voice my findings - table was booked in person for a set time only to be told on arrival that we were late which was completely wrong - we were offered a seat in the bar area whilst the young lady went to get us menus and the wine list - no menus or wine list were returned but we were taken to our table - the actual table was unstable and had to be propped but this was only the start of a catalogue of errors - we waited for at least five to ten minutes for the menus and again waited while surrounding tables were cleared and reset before our orders were taken - then our wine didn't arrive until the main meal - clearly the young ladies were incompetent and we even had to wait with our meals on the table before our side orders arrived - coffee was served before our desert - we even had to wait to ask for our bill as only one girl was covering all the tables - overall the food was excellent but as for the service - not even one star - a restaurant of this calibre needs staff to be trained and not left without someone who knows how to provide good service - having visited this restaurant on several previous occasions when the lovely Valerie was there we seen such a difference - would we go back - not unless the service is improved - MC Donald's would put you to shame !

I have been hearing so much of Ardtara for the last several years but the opportunity to eat here has always skipped my flying visit back home :( but in November 2015 I ceased the opportunity for a wonderful evening here with friends and family and will continue to talk about not only the food but the hospitality for a long time to come. Growing up in Maghera you never really expect such fine class, internationally acclaimed food on your doorstep but they've managed to pull it off. The entire menu was just perfectly laid out and read so well I wanted to try everything. Alas I couldn't. The portions where truly perfect and the fish course was possibly one of the next fish dishes I have ever had. The not 1, not 2 but all 3 desserts I had (sorbet, cheese and a pudding) all where just phenomenal...at this stage I can say these where the best desserts I have ever had. The kitchen, ran by Browns of Londonderry/Derry/Madian City are doing a remarkable job with this place and I hope the locals appreciate the fine food that's right there! With praise comes some (2 areas) constructive criticism...but not with the food but with the service which is unfortunate. I found the bar man to be a true gentleman and more than courteous but he can't just wear black trousers, shirt and tie...he needs a jacket! It's a must and completed the high level of restaurant it is aiming to be! Finally the theory they have about one server per table does simply not work! We where a party of 4 but only 2 dishes came out at a time with a 2-4 minute delay in the final dishes coming out to complete the table. This was incredibly frustrating as everything else was more than 5 stars. They need all dishes, no matter the table size to come out all at once and everyone begin together. Let's hope they fix it. Would highly recommend and I would probably guess with a few minor adjustments (in service) the Michelin people won't be far behind in knocking on their door.

I just returned from Ardtara House having taken my 10 year old son up there for Sunday lunch. Before writing this I quickly looked at the terrible review Mr C Dawson put here in August. Not wishing to call the man a liar, but I think he must be very hard man to please, as having requested the tasting menu (at a time when they do not generally serve it) at short notice, the chef, whom I believe just picked up a local award of best chef for the County, did us proud. My photographs are testimony to this. More so, my son doesn't have a liking for tomatoes so the fish course of tuna and tomato done three ways was replaced for Coley and mussels. I see that as customer service of the highest degree. Having had tasting menu's in London, France, Italy and here in Northern Ireland, I can safely say and the pictures will testify, these were portions for country folk! Not city wimps like myself. My the time the Venison dish came out, I was well and truly sunk! As the picture will show you.I will not go into how each dish tasted, or minutely describe the ingredients. I will let the reader's eyes let their imagination run wild with excitement. The butter and malt bread deserves a mention, freshly churned butter infused with fennel pollen, and a light of touch malt bread bun with sunflower seeds was a delightful way to get the imagination started. My favourite dishes most definitely were the crab dish and the pigeon dish. My son loved the Pork belly dish with apple done 3 ways. If I had any criticisms in the dishes, after the feast we had the venison dish brought us to a fit to bursting situation, so the richness of the dish sunk us! Also the plum dish had a touch too much acidity to it, instead of the parfait maybe an ice cream. 7 courses like this for £45 was a billy bargain!! There is no where in Belfast where you could eat like that for that price. Service was attentive and staff eager to please. The wine waiter, industriously checking each glass was clean before serving the wine, making an effort to tell me about each wine. Not many establishments would go to this trouble. The serving staff and staff that cleared away, swooped down to clear away as soon as we finished, and bar the main course everything came out swiftly. I could see why the main course took longer though as there was a table of 8 being served their mains at the same time. The wine list is decent enough from a wine perspectve, some good value wines, some interesting wines. My glass of champagne a wee touch pricey for what it is. But one of my favourites, the Forget Brimont NV so I didn't grumble too much. I can't wait to get back to Ardtara, though will need to do a bit of exercise before doing so!

Having read some other reviews was a little worried how Sunday lunch would turn out, although personal recommendations were very positive.Need not have worried as it was a very good experience. The lunch menu is a three course offering, with various dish options available for each course. From the menu it's clear that this is a chef's kitchen, with unusual dishes ( for example pigeon, crab and venison) available with home grown side dishes.Service was very good, being efficient without being rushed or neglected; just the right pauses between courses. The wine menu is interesting, with wine available by the glass or bottle at fairly reasonable prices for a restaurant of this calibre.Overall very satisfied with our visit and will definitely be returning, probably to try the full menu.

Upon arrival it was really nice to sit on comfy settees and enjoy a drink in front of an open fire, although the loud pop type music was not really appropriate. We decided to choose the 3 course dinner menu as we found the lack of any description on the taster menu slightly off-putting. The food itself was really very good, with our only real complaint being the portion size of the potato side, which was tiny!!! Also the fact that the only side available - seasonal greens - had a £2.95 charge, which given the calibre of the restaurant seems particularly mean! Overall we were very happy with our evening and will probably return sometme in the future.

First impressions do count and something should be done about the approach to the house from the car park - the gravel really is very rough. The house itself however is really full of character and the open fires are very welcoming, as indeed is Valerie! We decided on the dinner menu and although the courses were all lovely, they perhaps didn't pack quite the punch that we had expected. The main courses of beef and chicken were however outstanding and full of flavour. With a few little tweeks - such as pre-dinner nibbles and petit fours with the coffee - Ardtara could be really spectacular and we will no doubt return again to see how it is faring.

I've read the review by DawsonC who has obviously been going to Ardtara for some time, but I can honestly say that on our visit we did not experience any of the negatives that were highlighted in that review. I can only review my own particular experience. Two of us booked for the Tasting Thursday with B & B. It was our first visit to Ardtara and it was recommended by several friends. The hotel is 19th Century and retains a lot of original features from the period. It could use some landscaping and lighting but otherwise it is set in secluded area of 8 acres just off Gorteade Road. Walking in is like stepping back in time. Stained glass and wooden panels, antique furniture and classic carpets. Rooms are high ceilinged and large. Likewise the bathrooms. All mod cons. Downstairs there is an airy conservatory for breakfast and a Downton style wooden panelled dining room. It's a little dark and drab in there but did ooze atmosphere. We were aware there were not many residents being a Thursday, but that suited us just fine. We had a few drinks in the pleasant bar area and then into the conservatory where we had the 6 course tasting menu paired with 5 different wines. 2 amuse bouche courses, followed by crab, monkfish, tuna, venison, pork, a pre dessert and dessert made for a very special dining experience. The service, presentation, quantity and taste of each course was without doubt, the best we have sampled in N. I. (I am comparing this to a well known eatery in Belfast where we had a very unimpresive 6 course tasting menu paired with wine) a few months previously. The Chef Eddie Attwell is to be commended for his flair, attention to detail and clever combining of flavours. The breakfast the following morning was tasty and also very enjoyable. Have already booked to go again before Christmas.

MORE AT TripAdvisor

I have been dining in Ardtara for years, and had many a family dinner here. This review details why I have paid my last visit. Apologies for the length of it in advance but I hope it serves to warn others of what to now expect. To put this in context, I submitted another Tripadvisor review on Ardtara back in March of this year, a few months after Ian Orr and his Brown’s chain had taken control. Back then, it was obvious that Mr Orr was leaving well enough alone, maintaining the wonderful friendly and professional staff in situ, installing an excellent chef to continue to focus on high quality cooking and ingredients and generally providing what has always been a dining experience highlight within the Mid Ulster area, to which I gave it 5 stars. What a difference 6 months makes. Mr Orr has managed in this short time to take all that was good about Ardtara and ruin it. When my wife and I arrived for our Saturday night reservation, gone was the immediate and friendly welcome at the door. Where was the manageress from our last visit? Thankfully Valerie appeared. This is the only aspect of Ardtara that has remained and for that alone, the reason I have given one star for this review. If she goes, Mr Orr might as well close the doors and put a for sale sign up. We were directed to the lounge and started the first of countless waits that night. It became very clear that Valerie was managing reception, checking in guests, serving behind the bar, waitressing, essentially everything. As such, with no other staff in sight and Valerie trying to look after all guests and diners that we saw, we sat in the lounge for 20mins completely ignored. I looked for a menu, wine list, anything to pass the wait. All we could find was copious copies of the Browns promo leaflet and several dated copies of a regional business magazine with Mr Orr on the front cover. Pretentious or what! As Mr Orr is keen to promote himself and garnish praise at every opportunity, I will direct the criticism in this review to him…if you want the acclaim, take the critique as well. Inside the dog eared business mag, he and his business partner discussed how they would be making changes to Ardtara so I was keen to see what they were. Well first change is that he has put prices up by 20%. Has he used this huge price hike to justify investment in the property? In a word, no. The grounds are still lacking any lighting in either the carpark or the driveway. To expect diners to walk up a pitch dark gravel drive to a secluded and equally dark carpark is contemptible. Frankly this is an accident waiting to happen. Dining room is still gloomy and crying out for a fresh coat of paint, fresh flowers, a lit fire, open view to the kitchen, anything really to create a sense of ambience in the room. So cosmetically no investment to be seen. The absence of the manageress is another change, not for the better either. 30 mins after arriving, we were finally shown to our table. First thing I noticed was that not only was the manageress from previous visits missing but so too were the waiting staff and the numbers of those that were there had essentially halved, and gone was the smart and similar attire waiting staff wore. Forget about investment, this screamed cutbacks to us. We had decided and informed when making the booking that we would be ordering the tasting menu with the wine option. At the table, I was asked what I would like to drink, to which I reminded the waitress of our menu choice and that we had still to actually see a menu to see what we would be receiving. We also asked for water. 5 mins later, we asked for water again. The water was finished 30mins into the meal, and the empty bottle sat on the table for the rest of the meal without any offer to refill it. I had to ask for a menu again as we still had not received one and had no idea what we were to therefore eat. We were presented with a solitary copy of the menu between us. Considering the absence of them and that we had waited 45mins to receive a copy you would think it was inlaid in jewels, but no, it was a single A4 sheet of paper, badly printed and typeset, without binder or cover. 15 mins after sitting down (45mins after arrival) we were served an appetizer an espresso cup of celeriac veloute. But the tiny malt roll that was served with it was mismatched and the butter inedible as it was essentially a puddle on the bread board. The first wine to accompany the first course was served…in a dirty glass. Fingerprints and residue of lipstick on it. Unfortunately I did not spot this till after I had finished the glass…which was all of two small mouthfuls. Each glass of wine served to match the courses was between 50 and 75ml…apart from the dessert wine which was at best 25-30ml! Mr Orr, if diners choose the wine option tasting menu, and pay a disproportionate premium for this option, don’t insult them by serving thimbleful measures. First course was “Beetroot”, essentially 6 small cubes. The waitress, in rather “colorful” language, described how it was accompanied by a blue cheese crumb. Crumb is being too kind, I could not find any on my plate, my wife found a miniscule single “crumb” on hers. 3 small forkfuls and the dish was finished. A 10min wait then followed until the plates were cleared. Next glass of wine was served, again in a smudged glass but no lipstick this time. 10 mins later, the next course, “Pork”. This consisted of a 10 pence sized piece of forced pork meat and 4 melon balled apple pieces. 2 small forkfuls finished this off. Another wait for plates to be cleared followed by a 15min wait for the next course. Due to the interminable wait between courses, we had ample opportunity to observe the other diners in the room. It was glaringly apparent the pervasive air of what can only be described as disappointment and gloom in the room. Not a single laugh or sound of joy could be heard at any table. Clearly every other diner was “enjoying” the “Browns” experience as much as we were. Third course was “mackerel and crab”. I actually laughed when it was served. The crab consisted of a teaspoon sized quenelle of mousse, the mackerel, a one by one inch long piece of flaccid and overcooked fish. Eating this took all of 24 seconds…yes, I timed it! Another long wait, before the next course of” Hake” was served. We had now been in the restaurant over 2 hours and were absolutely ravenous. When the hake was served, it again followed the pattern of the previous courses, a miniscule piece of fish (completely under seasoned), a couple of micro herbs, a melon balled sized vegetable of questionable identity, and a few dots of sauce. Exception on this occasion was the inclusion of carbs, a single solitary baby potato, cut into 4 sections. Oh and no wine as apparently the wine that is served with the previous course has to suffice for this course as well. Mr Orr, maybe point this out on the menu, advise guests to keep one of the two mouthfuls of wine that is served with the mackerel course to then cover the hake course! What followed was another 25 minute wait for the last but one course, Buffalo. At this point my wife and I desperately wanted the dinner to be over, so abject and disappointing was it. I will give this for Mr Orr, he is nothing if not consistent. The same 10 pence piece that was used to size the pork course was used to size the rillette of forced buffalo meat and circle of what I assume was loin. The loin was overcooked and tough, the rillette absent of any flavor or seasoning. My dish also was absent any saucing whilst my wife’s dish had a couple of splots of what did seem a nice jus but again, so pitiful that it was gone in the first mouthful.A pre dessert was served, yogurt with fruit compotes. Tasty, if I wanted a breakfast dish. Dessert was described as a chocolate brownie. If there was brownie in the dish, we didn’t find it. There was I think a square of chocolate delice, which was so overpoweringly rich and cloying that it killed anything else in the dish which I think consisted of a melon ball (what would this kitchen do without its melon baller and tweezers?) sized portion of sorbet and teaspoon quenelle of I think salted caramel mousse and despite how hungry my wife and I were at this point, we left it unfinished. What a badly judged final course for this tasting menu, completely at odds with everything that came before it. We asked for the bill, received it without any offer of tea or coffee, paid up and left. As for the bill, utterly extortionate. We have never had a more expensive meal in Northern Ireland, and we have been fortunate to have eaten in some of the best restaurants here. In fact, only meal we have had more expensive in Ireland was a tasting menu in a Michelin restaurant in Dublin…except it was 9 courses not 6 courses and was utterly amazing with each dish comprising premium ingredients and incredible theatre in presentation. So what has changed to ruin the Ardtara? This is a small restaurant in rural Mid Ulster charging Dublin / London starred restaurant prices. I am a local and for the first time ever, did not know a single other diner in the restaurant, nor worse, there was not a single local accent to be heard. A restaurant in this location relies heavily on local patrons, these patrons have clearly deserted it. Not a single premium protein ingredient is served on the tasting menu. Mr Orr seems to think diners will be happy paying a small fortune for canapé sized portions of cheap ingredients. Whilst the waitresses tried their best, it felt throughout the meal that they were reciting from a script. And when it takes the waitress longer to describe what has been served on a plate than it does for the diner to then eat it, there is a serious serious problem with portion control in the kitchen! The wait between courses was interminable, in a dead dining room, bereft of all atmosphere or energy, wanting the meal to be over is the pervading feeling. And to walk away from a dining table nearly 3 hours after you sat down hungrier than when you arrive, something is seriously wrong. Mr Orr seems more intent on building his empire, promoting supermarkets, clay pigeon shoots etc. than focusing on providing an enjoyable dining experience. Overall feeling we had in leaving the Ardtara after a very very long 3hrs 30mins was one of abject disappointment that one of our favourite restaurants has been ruined. That feeling of disappointment is now more one of anger. I fear for the future of Ardtara, I would be surprised if the extremely talented Head Chef stays. And lose Valerie the one remaining member of front of house staff from the previous regime and service such as it is will grind to a halt. Without local patronage, once the visiting tourists leave, who will travel to this out of the way destination? Such a crying shame, but the curse of the “celebrity” chef building his empire and forgetting what pays the bills for this empire i.e. satisfied repeat customers, has struck again.

Been here a few times for food and a few beers. Nice spot clean and staff very friendly. Food not amazing but pretty good, good portion size and quality produce used. My last visit the prices had risen quite dramatically unfortunately but as prices were already higher than we would pay in a larger town/city we wont be returning. I understand everyones costs are going up but £16.50 for a burger then another £5 for a small portion of chips is steep and the quality didn't justify it. Sorry we will drive on through next time.
