Brodies in Dumfries & Galloway

Sad to have to write this review. Have eaten at Brodies on numerous occasions and always had first class food and service. Attended for dinner last night and was extremely disappointed. Food was way below standard of previous experiences with basic starters. Mains had over reduced gravy which tasted burnt. Over salted sauce on fish. The desserts which are usually the star of the show also greatly disappointed. However possibly the worst element was the bottle of pinot grigio which was so acidic it was undrinkable. Raised the disappointment in the food and particularly the wine issue with the staff. Were advised that chef tried wine and all was fine. No comments on disappointing food. Offered complimentary coffee which we declined. Overall an abysmal dining experience from a restaurant which we have frequented on many occasions. Sorry Brodies but you have now just lost 2 loyal customers. Unfortunately the offer of a free coffee did not compensate for how poor the meal was.

We have dined in Brodie’s several times whenever we visit Moffat and have always had a warm welcome . Unfortunately this time we were met with a very rude young man who asked if we were ‘looking for something to eat ‘ then proceeded to tell us ‘they were too busy ‘ this was despite several empty tables and the sitting area being empty . Not the warmest of welcomes and our impression was ‘ we weren’t wanted ‘ maybe it was the rainwear and small dog that was not in keeping with their standards .its reassuring to know that in this economic climate some restaurants are able to turn away business , long may it continue for Brodies.

Fantastic! Lovely greeting on entry and a biscuit for our dog. Smashing tea served in proper bone china cups and delicious courgette and avocado cake. What blew me away was the proprietor offering to phone other restaurants for another couple were searching for dinner that night. Outstanding care and attention.

Very welcoming and relaxing spot to enjoy a cuppa and delicious cakes. Holly, our lab was delighted with the biscuits too.

Been several times in the passing and every time was as good as the last. Friendly and very helpful staff, great food, coffee and fabulous afternoon teas. would highly recommend Brodies to anyone who is passing through Moffat. Just wished we lived closer for more visits

We traveled from York to Brodies in Moffat for their Valentines dinner and it was worth every minute of the 2.5 hour journey. Great value, great food, welcoming premises but above all else a warm welcome and great service. We have been regular visitors to Brodies since their opening in 2011 and have enjoyed every visit since then and we are talking in excess of a hundred visits. The owners and staff are much valued friends who work their socks off to give every visitor the best possible experience and we believe that they deserve to be respected for that.

Fantastic Valentines dinner, wonderful food and friendly staff, making for a superb evening. Brodies never fail to impress.

Very nice afternoon tea for 2, one of them gluten free. Gluten free option was very nice. Refills of tea/coffee readily available at no extra cost. Price of afternoon tea a little inflated I think, but a treat.

Well, what can I say ! We ignored the 1-2 star reviews , then and it turns out they are accurate! Unfriendly and rude woman everyone mentions is actually one of the biggest downfalls of the place ! If she is the owner , time to make some drastic attitude adjustments .

Great little restaurant, first time visiting and certainly will come back! Lovely staff and delicious food. I don’t normally review, but other reading the unfair 1 star review, I thought I would. This is a small family run business that can fill up in the evening very quickly, as I know I was lucky to get the last available table for the evening. Yes the person might have driven 7 hours, and yes the restaurant might appear to be empty tables, but as the tables aren’t turned at night, the restaurant was full, it isn’t the restaurant’s fault. I heard the waitress suggest to the customer to try Claudio's, and it was said in a polite, positive and helpful manner. So what if there’s a good banter between the staff and customers? I think the last reviewer shouldn’t have blamed the restaurant just because they didn’t get what they want! At least they got fed over the road! I really wish people would be more supportive to these small businesses rather than being dismissive, just saying.

I rate this a 1 star as we were turned away at 8 pm on a Saturday night after a 7 hour drive from Berkshire England, 3 hours before closing and 6 empty tables in view , no kindness or friendly tone from woman at the bar. She basically said if we are booked then we are booked and not taking any onen. Then I witnessed a customer cuffing a waitress in the side of the head in some friendly banter ? Was not impressed . Clearly not the place to come then ! The woman was dismissive and simply told me to try Caudios across the road … so we did! Busy as can be but welcomed us with warmth and friendly chat even 15 minutes before closing! Wonderful happy staff at Claudius! Great food and wonderful atmosphere at Claudios .. will never set foot into Brodies, as first impressions are everything!

Pleasant "bistro" serving coffee to full meals. seven days. Good place for a drink in the "gin"room.

Staying in Moffat on a short break and decided to call in here for lunch on a Winter’s day. Lots of reserved tables but shown to a lovely table next to the fire, very cosy. Alex was our waiter, he’s very friendly and attentive with excellent customer service. He even checked if we wanted our hot drinks before or with our food. Menu choices made and we opted for chicken goujon & fish finger sandwiches, both served with side of chips, both very tasty meals. Desserts next and we opted for toffee cake & Bakewell cake, another excellent choice. We’ve been to lots of restaurants, cafes etc. over the years and can definitely say, this is one of the best.

Can only speak second hand to the food as I didn’t eat myself, but the service and vibe was excellent. Super friendly and cosy by the fire after a wee hill, appreciated the warmth of our host also

Booked for a surprise 60th lunch for 4 adults and 2 kids. The staff and service were great, the food delicious. Would definitely visit again. It's also dog friendly, which is a major bonus for us.

Was travelling back up from Old Trafford on our way back to Fife and despite last orders being 8pm they were prepared to wait for us knowing it might have been a struggle for us to get there on time. The food and service were excellent and the place was full. Great atmosphere and well worth the effort of get there.

Stopped here for just a light lunch and thoroughly enjoyed the food. Everything seems to be made using good quality ingredients and the prices are extremely reasonable. The staff were lovely and able to advise us on food allergens. They even had gluten free and lactose free cakes! Which meant we just had to take cake away with us for later and it did not disappoint! Lovely place would definitely recommend.

Gorgeous food, great atmosphere

Lovely coffee shop which triples as a wine bar and a restaurant. Welcoming staff who have a fascination of old cars in their very clean facilities. Dog friendly too!

Absolutely the vest place to dine, really interesting place with their decor, the afternoon tea room is nothing but exceptional. This is one place you must visit and the staff are really friendly and helpful

Brodies is a charming coffee haven where we found ourselves drawn to the irresistible display of cakes. Despite a hearty breakfast, the restaurant's elegantly decorated interior and inviting ambiance tempted us to indulge. While we missed sampling the food this time, the diverse menu promises a culinary adventure for our next visit. Brodies, with its delightful atmosphere and expertly brewed coffee, is a must-try for those seeking a cozy and tasteful experience.

We ate here as a party of 3 on the 11th November. Greeted warmly, sat in the bar area until our table was ready. Great wine and gin list, but there's everything else you can think of if that's not your thing. The rose wine was amazing 👏. We ordered our food, and got pork two ways, the cod and the vegetarian dish, all excellent and the portions are perfect. We had the cheeseboard, honey pears and ice cream for afters, beautiful. Although the cheese on the cheeseboard could have been a bit more varied, it was nice enough but seemed to be 3 cuts of the same cheddar and 1 blue . Bit odd. However, we would happily return and recommend. The staff and the ambience are perfect in this fabulous little place. 😍

What a find! After walking around this nice wee town looking at menus, we liked the look of this place and went in. We were seated and our order taken quickly, they are clearly allegens aware. The fish cakes were gluten-free and there were GF options for desert and cakes too. The toilets were immaculate. The food was good and it was a decent portion for a reasonable price. Coupled with the views going down the A701 and going back on the A708, plus free parking in Moffat, this was a great day out.

We arrived on holiday to Moffat and decided to go to Brodies, we arrived at the door that had nothing on it but was clearly the door to the restaurant. We pushes and pulled the door trying to get it to open, then suddenly it opened sideways. The staff shouted at us telling us "not to open it and leave it alone". I apologised and was then told "I hope it goes back properly" I explained there should be a sign saying exit only and to use other door. I was fuming and just wanted to leave, we had 1 drink then left. The waitress apologised but it spoil my holiday as I couldn't believe on how I (we) were spoken to.

On holiday from Australia, driving around the UK and dropped in for lunch. What a great move this turned out to be! Friendly, warm welcome, with great food at reasonable prices. Some cafes have been a bit hit or miss, but Brodies was great and we're only sorry that we've moved on and can't go back.

Great location in Moffat. Food options are brilliant, including great gluten-free main meals and desserts. Staff are so warm and welcoming, and the atmosphere is perfect. Parking outside and great walking locations nearby too.

It was the best place in Moffat. The staff was so nice that we are hard of hearing, so they spoke to us very clearly and slowly. The food was very delicious. I was very surprised that I was served the English tea terrace because I was vacationing here from Austria.

We are always treated like royalty by the Brodies Team! It really is a special and beautiful place and our first choice for a celebration or just a treat. Thank you very much for our delicious dinner, professional service, surprises and laughs.

Down at the campsite for the weekend and booked brodies for dinner last night. Such a warm welcome in comfortable surroundings set us up for hopefully a lovely dinner. You could not fault the food, absolutely beautiful and value for money++++ What a wonderful, welcoming family run establishment, compliments to hubby the chef! Can’t wait to return to Moffat and will be booking Brodies for sure.

Quantity not good for price. Starters to small. Main course frozen chips. In a restaurant like this should be fresh cut chips. Cheese board should be on a board not crammed into a bowl. Waited 25mins for the bill. We were going to order more drinks and wine but no one came near. Nice atmosphere , clean toilets, lovely decorated. Overall need to smarten up. That includes dress code for staff

We visited today. We turned up needing a table for 5 plus our dog (lab). The staff were very friendly and accommodating. Our dog even got a treat. The food was lovely and very reasonably priced. We will definitely visit again when we are next in Moffat.

Beautifully decorated in a nice setting, with a limited but refined menu. It's a shame that the service is so disgraceful, without a smile or even a kind word. We visited today Aug 26th for Breakfast at 10 am.

Good quality food with very pleasant helpful service. It tends to be quite busy so probably advisable to book. P.S. They allow well behaved dogs which can be useful if you are stopping off during your walk

We asked about eating he as we were driving by, but were very disappointed to find out we could not eat here in the end, even though it was not a late time. The lady serving the tables told us they were all full, and there was no chance we could eat there even if we waited, since ALL the tables had just ordered their food just now. It was painfully obvious this was not true, as we saw many tables finishing up dessert and even with the bill on the table, on our way in. But she apparently had decided she did not want any more work for the day, so after looking at all the nice food we had to turn around and leave. Mixed feelings about this place because the food was probably fantastic and there seemed to be lots of gluten free options! But the service seemed more than disappointing from our very short interaction, so I am not sure I would recommend. There are many other places with fantastic food and service in town...

We had lunch here twice over the past week and loved it both times. The staff (especially the owner) are so accommodating and lovely. The Aubergine Panini and Fish cakes are particularly good. Very dog friendly. Portions are good and the atmosphere is so welcoming.

Probably somewhere around 7th or 8th time eating here. Tonight was difficult to choose a starter. I’d happily have all of them. If I was to rank Brodie’s on anything, it’s consistency. The menu always gives you challenges in choice. Not a bad thing. The food pars with most restaurants in Glasgow in similar price range. Can some times excel above. I’ve read reviews with criticism of staff. For goodness sake, give them a break! They’re young and enthusiastic. Communicate with them. They’ll respond and you’ll have a fantastic time.

We had a warm welcome in a nice atmosphere, we had our drinks in a cozy lounge while they were preparing our food and table. The food was excellent, I would say the best I had so far, and also the drink were very good. Reasonably priced.

We really enjoyed our lunch at Brodies. Although Scotland caters for dog owners very well, our first choice on the high street didn't. In a way I'm glad it didn't. The welcome we received was very pleasant and we were seated in a nice quiet section towards the rear of the restaurant. I had homemade fishcakes accompanied by some excellent fat and crispy chips. Portions were generous enough that unfortunately we were too full to sample dessert. The tartare sauce was/is so good I asked where they purchased it from, only to be told it was made on the premises. I am sure this is not the only review to extol its virtues. Service was timely and pleasant. When we revisit Moffat next year we will beat a path to Brodies door.

The menu is very simple, I expected to find something more traditional, but instead sandwiches and fish fingers, the truth was nothing special. The place is nice to look at, it has a garden inside but I haven't seen it. The ladies are kind, in my opinion the menu needs to be improved. Reply to your message: I'm sorry that you think that when I wrote my review it was influenced by the behavior of my little children, I left and came back with some gifts I bought in the area for them. It's a shame that I didn't take a photo of the menu, and no, I didn't see the menu at the entrance otherwise I wouldn't have entered and given the time I had to give something to eat to the little ones who, despite being hungry, didn't finish theirs. lunch, I asked for two simple drinks and I wasn't satisfied with my requests, I imagine they aren't asked all the time: Spritz or Pimm's anyway. Thank you for the chat and your desire to leave everything to come to beautiful Italy.

Lovely food, in fact perfect, although smallish portions which would have been fine apart from. read on…loved the girl who’s specialty was to guess your main course. Exceptional gazpacho, coming from someone who had a house in Spain for 20 years! Lovely pork 2 ways. Asparagus starter for the wife had 1 spear cut in half, but hey ho, black halibut was perfection. Great atmosphere and got talking to a lovely couple on the next table. The bad points, I’ve got to be honest here, we didn’t get asked about the sweets, and you do need a full 3 courses, and by the time we realised it was a bit too late. Then had to call staff over for coffee and brandy ( served in a warm glass, brownie points abounding) and had to call over again for another one, could have had a good few more brandies but couldn’t be bothered, if I had been asked I would have started on the large ones. Prices very reasonable and food delicious.

As it was a beautiful day we decided to sit outside. This was probably our mistake! They were fairly prompt to take our order but then pretty much forgot about us. When the food did eventually arrive it was pretty bland. The goats cheese and caramelised onion panini tasted of neither ingredient. My wife asked for salt and vinegar when her order arrived and literally waited 10 minutes before going to the kitchen to get it herself. Their excuse was that they were busy making coffee. Both waitresses were pretty rude when we mentioned it. We had high hopes as good recommendations but were severely disappointed.

Wonderful little bistro/gin bar. We had planned to go to another restaurant but it was closed so poped in here for a quick gin and ended up staying for dinner. Gorgeous atmosphere, great service, cosy and warm. Food was amazing. Best I've had in a long time. The menu description doesn't do itself justice. well presented and very tasty. Definitely recommend.
