Clos du Marquis in Winchester

What a great find, excellent food and service, you must give this a try.

We had lunch in the Clos today a party of 3. The menu showed two courses for £34.00. The service was excellent and food was exquisite. Certainly the best French style food I have had for many years. Small ‘amuse bouche’ provided were delightful. My starter was devilled kidneys, followed by a main course of game stew. My wife and daughter are both gluten-free and were well catered for in their choices. Had I been permitted, I would have stayed for supper. Thank you for a wonderful lunch

We have dined here in the evening many times before and never been disappointed… This time we popped in for the 2 course fixed price lunch and both went for the menu du jour. The food was outstanding supplemented by quality reasonable priced wines… We will be back for dinner!

It is quite a wonderful surprise to find such a fabulous french restaurant in the Hampshire countryside. Fresh seasonal ingredients and a well balanced small menu mean there is a focus on the cooking which is of extremely high quality. Great service and a lovely restaurant on the high street. Excellent value for the quality.

Excellent little find in Stockbridge. Garth was an excellent host. The meal was superb. The canapés before our starter was a lovely touch. We didn't have dessert but we were presented with a very rich chocolate curl each. Thank you so much, we will definitely return.

This is the second time we have eaten here and it didn’t disappoint. We both had the two course menu which had some wonderful choices. The food itself was well presented, hot and very tasty. Side orders accompanied the main courses too making it very good value indeed. The host was attentive and chatty which added to an all round superb evening. We will be back!

Stuffeds quails and sweetbreads are some invitation. Brilliantly delivered. Just go! Parking a challenge but never an issue

What an excellent lunch! Had a fantastic time here - excellent service and the food was absolutely delicious. Only regret was not having any room for dessert. We’re looking forward to returning!

I spent an absolutely amazing 2 hours in this restaurant with my Husband. The food was absolutely exceptional and the gentleman serving us was so friendly. My Husband and I are both passionate about wine and he took the time to talk to us about where they sourced the wine, different styles - even giving me some "surprise" samples, which was really enjoyable. The scallops were cooked to perfection, the beef was a delight and everything was utterly perfect. By the time we left the restaurant, I had already arranged a dinner date with my sister, so we have the opportunity to visit again.

We have enjoyed the gastronomical delights of the Clos du Marquis for many years. They never disappoint us and always go the extra mile. We celebrated our 40th wedding anniversary in December with them , a full house and nothing but compliments from all our guest's, some who had never been there before. September was my 67th birthday and we were a table of 7. Garth even pointed my husband in the direction of a local florist so there were individual pots of flowers in the middle of the table which each of the ladies took home at the end of the evening Thank you Garth and Miranda. We were so excited to finally try this restaurant after seeing all the reviews. Only 4 tables were in use on a Saturday night & we were the last ones there at not even 9pm. There was no background music so you could hear the other tables discussion & there was no atmosphere. The restaurant is run totally by one couple, the wife is the chef & the husband is front of house & neither of them are French. We had l’escargots as we always do anywhere we can and this was delicious so we were really hopeful about the rest of the meal. Sadly the mains didn’t live up to the expectation. The side dishes were basic & bland p a dish of plain roasted pumpkin with no flavourings or dressing whatsoever, plus re-heated bland potatoes dauphinois which was chewy & dry after being microwaved. I had lobster in a Thermidor sauce, expecting the traditional style of the lobster meat having been removed & mixed with the sauce before going back into the shell to be gratinated. However, the shell was just for show, spotlessly clean, & certainly wasn’t from the lobster on my plate as they claimed. I should have realised that by them only opening 2-3 days a week would mean that the lobster would be frozen but I was not prepared at all for it to be so hard that I could barely get my fork in. The maitre de saw me struggling to cut it so brought over a steak knife & when I finally broke through to the centre there was a rush of watery black liquid across my plate. The maitre de saw this but said it was just the roe. Eventually he could see I wasn’t happy and offered a replacement meal which came out really quickly. The chef came out and apologised saying that they always left the roe on as some people do like it but she was glad I had brought it to her attention that it wasn’t for everyone so they would leave it off in future. I tried to explain that I like the roe but that it is usually pink by the time it gets to me. This wasn’t even slightly underdone roe which would be a black gunge, this was very watery black liquid because the frozen lobster wasn’t even early cooked which also explained the firmness of the white meat. A little bit later the chef came through again and sheepishly admitted that it ‘might have been a little bit under’. This wasn’t a case of disliking something or being a bit disappointed in one element of the dish, this was a health hazard served alongside bland sides at huge expense. What a let down. We were absolutely gutted to finally find a proper French restaurant with an exciting menu & excellent reviews only for it to turn out so badly. I can only assume that this was an aberration as the rest of the reviews are very complimentary. Sadly it wasn’t to be for us.

A fabulous meal with excellent personal service. The restaurant always has an interesting selection on the menu, including kidneys, skate wings and rabbit. Everything is beautifully cooked and presented and accompanied by very good, well priced wines. The crème brûlée came still ‘burning’ providing us with entertainment too . Clos du Marquis is a classical French restaurant in the heart of the beautiful town of Stockbridge. Nowadays there are not many restaurants that serve French cuisine but we are lucky enough to have this restaurant in the historic Test Valley setting. The food is truly excellent and the menus change frequently. The service is professional and friendly. The experience is fine dining and we feel privileged to have Clos du Marquis as our favourite local restaurant.

This review is well overdue. We have been regulars at this restaurant since Covid but to be honest never felt it necessary to do a review. However, some recent bad experiences elsewhere together with the complete lack of solicitation by the owners to do a Tripadvisor review (unlike the so-called No 1 restaurant in Stockbridge which used to have a sign up saying “meet the pushy waitress as per Tripadvisor” after someone made that comment or hotels who so frequently ask you to leave a Tripadvisor review), made me feel compelled to do so. Clos du Marquis is an authentic French fine dining restaurant, run by a lovely husband and wife team - Garth and Maranda. The food is truly delicious. The service is genuine and setting is charming. It feels like you are in France whilst in fact you are in the picturesque town of Stockbridge on the River Test. The 2 course table d’hote menu is exceptional value. Clos du Marquis is not about “gimmicky” food per Masterchef eg sou vide this with blow torched that etc - just good old fashioned French fine dining. Consistently excellent.

We had a faultless meal with impeccable service. As good a French restaurant as we have ever dined at and that includes countless visits to France.

We had a meal here at the weekend. OMG it was so nice to go out for a meal and get treated like a customer and not just another number. They only have 6 or 7 tables and so the diners are the centre of attention from start to finish. It was a pleasure to have aperitifs and wines served correctly and in the right glassware. They serve fish with a fish knife, I can't remember when I was last served fish with a fish knife. The menu has a good choice of dishes, everything we ordered was delicious and looked beautiful prepared and presented. Garth is a great host and makes you feel very welcome. We will definitely be going back again soon.

We went with another couple for lunch and all felt it was the best experience in our recent memory which is saying something as we love eating out! Sorry I didn't take pictures of the food which was delicious from the amuse-bouche to the chocolate truffles served complimentary at the end of our meal. Champagne excellent, crab starter excellent, rabbit with mustard sauce absolutely divine. But in addition to the lovely food and wine, the owner was so very welcoming without being intrusive, served perfectly so we always felt taken care of but our conversations never interrupted. It was like the Gavroche where no one appears until you need them. To take it to perfect 5 stars, the restaurant was immaculately clean and the decorations and loos beautifully done. That is where these pictures are from as I would like to copy the idea - sorry no pictures of the well presented food......

I highly recommend Clos du Marquis for fine dining at a reasonable price. The authentic french cuisine is delicious and nicely presented and the table are perfectly set out with lovely cutlery. The service is first class and the atmosphere is relaxed yet safety protecting the customer from Corona is paramount as tables are space far apart This has to be my all time favourite restaurant

£2.50 for a can of coke to make worse its a can out of a multipack that isn't allowed to be sold separately

Our favourite restaurant in the world, and only 10 miles from home. We've been coming here for about 6 years and have never had anything other than an utterly exquisite meal. Amazing service, incredible food, lovely ambiance - never feels busy or rushed, we feel like old friends rather than customers. All the stars!!

This is review is from our second visit to the Clos du Marquis this time with our son and daughter who were both impressed and commented on the wonderful french cuisine and how they made us as a family feel at home just like the first time my wife and I dinned together as a couple the Clos du Marquis it was once again fantastic.They have a quaint lounge area to partake in drinks with delicious hors d'oeuvres before our meal and on our second visit they had crackling warm log fire in late winter. My wife adored the rustic old world charm of this restaurant from being welcomed on arrival too leaving it was again a lovely experience.This restaurant has a wonderful atmosphere and they truly care about their customers as it is reflect in the 1st class service to all their customers at every table. The table are set with beautiful cutlery and the whole place is extremely clean including the toilets. I do hope their business survives through this corona lock down period and we wish them well.If you want to impress friends, family or business associates then we highly recommend booking a table Clos du Marquis.We cannot wait for them to open so I will be ordering a take away instead for now.

My wife and I had the most amazing and enjoyable evening here last night. From the minute we walked in we felt relaxed and looked after. All of the food was perfectly cooked, portion size excellent and the most amazing flavours. Service was discreet and friendly. Our meal was excellent value for money.We will be going back.

Time to write another review.....several years since my last! This restaurant continues to delight us. We went yesterday with every maitre de,s nightmare.....she ate everything Garth said she should and 24 hours later still seems to be alive... meanwhile we were more than pleased with our choices as usual! As always a superb meal at a sensible price. The lamb was so tender and full of flavour. Service excellent and gentle live music too. Such a relaxing evening.

Great quality food, warm cozy atmospher, great for a special meal out

A very warm welcome before enjoying a drink by the fire. We then had a superb 3 course meal. Service is perfect as well as the amazing food!

After perusing the menu with friends in front of the log fire, we decided on a varied collection of starters with some of us having devilled kidneys (a perennial menu item) and others scallops sauteed in a delicious ginger and coconut source. For mains we variously had lamb, duck and bream all with excellent sauces and perfectly cooked vegetables. The things I like about this restaurant are the relaxed atmosphere, Garth's pithy comments on the latest happenings in the rugby and cricket world, and the little touches such as the bouche amusee while we peruse the menu and the delicious home-made chocolate with the coffee.

Two courses for fifteen pounds to celebrate fifteen years of the Clos. Great night great food always well spaced tables and a great atmosphere. Thanks

We have been going to this restaurant for 8 years This last time was to celebrate the restaurant being open for 15 yearsThe restaurant is small and delightfullyfriendly. Dinner was wonderful as were the wines. We had a most enjoyable evening. We will be back

Bravo Garth !Another great lunch, served with charm and a dry sense of humour.Delicious French onion soup, mains of Calves Liver with green beans, roast butternut squash, hassleback potatoes, and fillet of Bass on crushed potatoes, and to top a great lunch we finished with our favourite Dessert of Crepes Suzettes and Orange Ice Cream ...Divine !!Good glasses of Claret accompanied lunch.

I cannot recommend Clos du Marquis highly enough. The quality of food is consistently superb, the wine selection is outstanding and the service is always attentive and convivial. Absolutely my family's favourite restaurant in this area. The small menu changes frequently and is never a letdown. The depth of flavour in the sauces is exquisite. I have never had a dubious meal at Clos du Marquis. I wish the crepe suzettes were a permanent though - outstanding. Booking advised.

We have been talking about visiting this restaurant for years - and we finally went there. Very glad we made the effort, as the food was authentic French food made from excellent ingredients. We mixed the set menu with the a la carte to get the dishes we favoured ( we wanted the prawns in the coconut/ lime dressing as a starter, they were delicious). Mains and desserts equally tasty. Choice of wine complements the menu offerings well.

I recently had dinner at this restaurant with family for a birthday celebration. The service was friendly and helpful, the food absolutely delicious and the restaurant itself had a nice cosy feeling. Couldn't have been better! Definitely recommended for a special occasion!

Friday set lunch for four of us, warmly greeted, and ably looked after by Garth, At his suggestion, we tried an excellent bottle of Sparkling wine.

Wonderful French restaurant run by South Africans !!! He was a brilliant host and his wife, classically trained French chef did amazing things in the kitchen !!! One day we shall return, thoroughly recommended.

I had read the reviews and we booked a table and this is where it becomes difficult to explain. It was not what I was expecting we were greeted with a warm welcome that everyone received it felt a bit forced and strange....the meal was not a good as I was hoping with the reviews I had read! There just wasn’t enough food, overall a very disappointing night. I didn’t feel I could return my steak due to the cost. The decor could be updated it was all just a-bit tired. Would we visit again sorry but it is a NO such a shame...the chap was very polite it just didn’t work for us there was just no atmosphere, overall a rather expensive meal that just didn’t hit the spot.

We have been visiting Leckford for the last 14 years and have passed the Leckford Hutt many times on our journey. It has always looked shut, so it was a surprise to find out that it is actually a lovely French restaurant.

A birthday treat from my husband, dinner was fabulous, one of the best meals in a restaurant we have had for many years .We chose the set menu ,listening to the recommendations from Garth we enjoyed a lovely starter and melt in the mouth Lamb rump served with beautifully cooked vegetables, finished with some delicious home made ice cream and sorbets ,( we were too full to take advantage of the yummy sounding desserts)

We've been dying to try the Clos for years having driven past it hundreds of times on the busy A30 and having it recommended by a work colleague.

This was where I took my wife on our first date and have been back every year since (including to propose). The menu is small and excellently prepared. The dishes change frequently but are always authentic French. Garth looks after you expertly and knows what you desire often before you do! Outstanding food doesn't come cheap but Clos du Marquis is always value for money. I cannot recommend it enough.
