I found this cafe by chance on the internet when I searched for somewhere to have lunch. I had the prawn open sandwich which was very tasty, well presented and served with a smile. Followed this up with a piece of fresh fruit pavlova which was excellent. The staff and owner couldn’t have been more welcoming. I make a point of never giving 5 stars in any review and I can’t think of anything which would make the Daily Grind drop a point so take my 4 stars as the best I can give. I’ll be back.

Was in the Daily Grind about two weeks ago. Ordered the Brie as I always enjoy it. The salad was swimming in a very strong dressing. I couldn’t eat the salad and the dressing also was on the bread. I mentioned this to the waitress who argued that this was the normal way this is served. I know for a fact this was not the normal because I have ordered this so many times and I was very disappointed at her cheeky dismissive attitude. Service and food has always been second to none here, but this has put me of a bit.

My family and I eat here regularly (along with half the county!) as their range of fresh, delicious New York deli-style healthy meals have no real competition when it comes to taste, presentation, healthiness and sheer enjoyability in the Downpatrick area. That said, if its a fry, burger or goujons you prefer this place is not for you. The atmosphere is always buzzing and the staff are a real asset - charming, helpful and attentive despite the warm busyness that is the hallmark of successful eateries everywhere. The steep stairs from the street might be a little off-putting for the less mobile but the rewards are worth the climb. Personal favourites include the Buy-one-get-one-Brie and the Prawn Club. The home-made Banoffee Pie is deadly too. The extensive menu makes ditherers of us every visit. Never disappoints.

First class food at great prices! Lots of healthy options, but they're so well presented and tasty that you don't feel you're being good. ("Buy one get one Brie" is one of my favourites - the toasted onion bread, mmm! The generous fruit salads on the side are a delicious addition.) There are also some great traybakes if you have the room left and want to indulge. The staff are friendly and attentive. Lunch time queues attest to the quality and popularity of the Daily Grind. It sells out of most fresh produce by the end of lunch and closes up about 4ish - which is a shame as it is so much better than all the alternative restaurants / cafes in Downpatrick!

Been several times around lunch time and it can then be very busy. It appears that a lot of local employees use here as a lunch venue so the service is very fast. In fact if there is a queue they will take your order whilst you wait for a seat and by the time a seat is available your food is ready. The food is excellent and there is an excellent choice. Salads, toasted sandwiches and baguettes seem to be the mains but the staff will accommodate what you want, mixing and matching as you suggest. They are also very polite, attentive, friendly and efficient. Your coffee cup is topped up as often as you like with no extra charge.Prices are very reasonable. There appears to be no disabled access as its on the first floor of a building. There may be a lift but I didn't see one but neither did I look closely enough. This is a real gem of a place and I heartily recommend.

Base Coffee Companylocation-iconCentral PromenadeOther cuisines

Situated on Central Promenade, Newcastle, Co.Down the covered outdoor seating gives a truly Mediterrean atmosphere as you admire the views of the harbour and Slieve Donard, the highest peak in Northern Ireland, as it sweeps down to the sea. Choose one of the fabulous Base Coffee drinks or select from the range of herbal teas. For morning snacks try the sausage rolls, croisants or scone with fresh jam. Then later in the day you must try the home baked apple pie of one of the delicious (but huge) tray bakes. Base Coffee is not just a coffee shop, it's a hub for many regulars and undoubtedly you will very quickly feel welcome.
