Fochabers Chip Shop in Moray

Staying in the area and fancied a wee chippy. Ordered two haddock suppers. £9.15 each. Fish cooked to order, few people standing about waiting on their orders. 10 mins wait then we got ours...back to the digs. Fish was stunning, so fresh and with a crispy batter. Chips were good too and a wee tub of tartar sauce as well. Delish.....

This was my least favorite fish and chip shop in Scotland. I was there for 2 weeks, in Edinburgh and then Inverness, taking tours almost daily. The fish was very greasy, and fried in beef fat - which is not great if you don't eat beef and that's why you went to a fish shop. The chips were very average.

Normally good but disappointing today. Food cold, probably because they realised they got the order wrong and had to take the bits apart to amend it.

Wish I looked at the reviews first Gets cooked as you wait which is good , Silly setup to pay all back to front that was the quick part only 3 people in front of me but it took forever ever to get my order cooked glad I had my phone to watch a video while waiting It said the fish was 7 oz not the one I got it was more like 4 oz with lots of watered down batter poor quality fish when the fish markets are just along the coast. Big question would I go again no I would not

i ordered a chicken fillet supper and at least 2 of my chicken fillets had big chunks of fish at the end of the fillet when i bit into them. luckily not allergic to fish. also they forgot to give me my bottle of juice. there are usually no faults but this has put me off returning

We went here. First tried to ring an order through but the answerphone said you can't! So went in and I've never known anything like it. Haddock only and I asked if I wanted a supper ?? I asked what it was and it comes with chips! I've also never known a fish shop to give you 2 fishcakes when u order a "single " even the pineapple rings came as a pair. Peas were dry. The girl that served us was helpful. If you have a menu leaflet it well may be out of date. As they didn't offer everything on the menu. Won't go again as the area has plenty of places to eat. Also we live 15 hours away.

Very disappointed with this place. Don’t cater for a range of dietary requirements. Fry in beef dripping and could provide anything for lactose intolerant person in our group. Owner was rude and arrogant when we asked him. Am busy, don’t need to was his response!

Absolutely delicious fish and chips from this place. On our first visit, definitely won't be the last. Lovely quality fish and with a portion of tasty tartar sauce included. Just lovely.

Placed and paid for order once we’d worked out the system. A gentleman returned as his order was incomplete, staff defensive and the man frying responded sarcastically to him. I didn’t notice juice but saw someone get cans with their order. When my number was called I asked if I could get a couple of cans. Response was you have to queue again. I’ll get elsewhere not doing that again. Went to Speybay to eat and intended going for a work. My son burst into laughter when he noticed my gluten free fish was a mush of naked fish. There was no salt and vinegar either. I don’t think I have ever ordered in a chip shop and not been asked this. I think the chips would actually have been nice with some salt. Very disappointed and won’t bother returning.

We have always enjoyed to Fochabers chip shop and cannot recommended it enough. The fish supper in particular is not only shockingly good but it also comes as a good sized portion! If you are passing through make sure to stop for a chippy.

25 min wait for a bag of grossly overpriced chips is ridiculous. Dry and off taste when you do eventually get to eat them. Disappointing! Still no dine in either… shame that this place has really went downhill.

Turned up today after completing the SPeyside Way over the last 10 days for a celebratory fish and chip supper. No tables, no chairs, no dine-in. Obviously not 'living with Covid' in Fochabers!

Food was distinctly below para, chips were very dry and mozeralla sticks greasy - 2 drunks very loud and smelling of booze, not wearing masks and had no idea about personal space let alone social distancing. Won't be visiting again. Very slow service as food cooked to order which should have meant it would be better than it was!

Was given wrong order by staff. When returned (from several miles away at my cost and time )and then drove back and informed staff, the owner became angry and confrontational. Plenty of other good Fish n Chip shops in the area. Do yourself a favour and go to one of them. They will be happy with you business and give you good customer service.

Good food. Queues are pretty long so have a look at the menu and see if you can phone and order in advance to save waiting around.

My husband and I stayed in Fochabers for the weekend and both had a haddock supper on Saturday night. Shop was busy but we didn't have a long time to wait.Lovely light crispy batter on pure white flaked haddock and the chips were perfectly cooked, couldn't be better. Free wooden forks or plastic forks were just 5p.

Too busy, have to wait in massive queue in a busy waiting area. Doesn’t feel very safe. The system seems to be wait before you can which they keep staggering, the. You place an order and then guided to wait in another area till you get your order

Visiting family in Keith and we made a special visit to Fochabers to get fish suppers for four of us. As usual the fish was perfect, chips amazing and piping hot. Only carry out at the momen

Had fish supper and it was super! Batter light as a feather and the fish was so fresh it was still moving.

Black pudding spices are nice BUT chips are severely undercooked. Tried multiple times and do not think I’ll be back. Sorry but ya have took the chips and they have to have taste. They taste of nothing.

Moved to the area 4 months ago and tried all the chip shops , done this one 3 times and each time the chips were undercooked and stank of bad fat. Black pudding was the only decent thing we had. Three times is enough to get it right and they failed miserably. Thankfully we found a great chippy at Portknockie.

Don’t what is wrong with ‘ incomer ‘Angela’ but we have been going here for yonks. Well done all for keeping things going, it is much appreciated by all in Fochabers and beyond. Good buzzer system to make sure no one is waiting too long for take out. VERY generous sized portion of haddock cooked just right, thin crispy batter and non greasy chips topped off with a generous helping mushy peas and homemade tartar sauce. Keep it up folks.

Recommended! What a HUGE disappointment. The taste of the cooking fat was disgusting. Undercooked chips and batter. The “large “ haddock was not. Thank goodness for curry sauce , it masked some of the horrid aftertaste. What a waste of caloriesHaving moved from a land locked region I cannot believe that it can be so wrong this close to the sea.

Best fish and chips ever! Huge haddock with dry crispy chips and free homemade tartare sauce. Can’t fault it.

This is just about the best fish and chip shop we have ever visited. Fish and chips were excellent, service was pleasant and the price was very reasonable. Well done!

Came here years ago and were disappointed, but this time it was perfect! To try and foil those Covid germs, we ate in the car, but it was well worth it.

Well managed, clean and fantastic food. Popped in for hubby’s tea as he missed out earlier in the day as working. Turns out we missed out (ate in Elgin) and he scored! Home made tartare sauce and lemon and boxes keeping the fish and chips separate meant they arrived warm and crisp. Lovely.

Return visit but due to Coronavirus it's takeaway meals only and no loo facilities. Staff were doing their best to keep the queue moving and being cheery with everyone. Fish was cooked to the usual high standards and as far as this traveller is concerned it's still delivering excellence for the quality of product, service and competitive pricing. Some Scottish businesses clearly understand how to have customers flocking to their doorstep and this team clearly understand how to run a great business. Thanks guys - I wouldn't go anywhere else in the area for fish and chips.

Unfortunately the wee cafe at this fish and chip shop is still closed but they are very much open for takeaway business. Now, the food is the same superb quality and there is the added benefit of the Government's VAT reduction which this venue passes on to customers. Well done !

Was surprised to find the Gluten Free fish supper had no batter on the fish. This should have been explained as Ive never seen this done before and its not usual practice. Chips are lovely as is tartar sauce.

We often call in on our way north, fantastic fish and chips, the wee fellas voted this his favourite Smoked sausage and chips , in my top 3 for fish, along with Bruar and Gairloch ( all great ) . Cooked fresh to order. Very good COVID procedure, professionally managed by staff, pull off the A96 and visit Fochabers for some of the best in the Highlands!

Breaded fish disappointed tonight very dry this evening been a few times but been very busy today thought we would treat ourselves on this occasion thumbs down 👎

We love this fish and chip shop and usualy have fish and chips in their cafe about once a month. So, now its about 12 weeks since the lockdown began and one of the things I've missed most is our visits to the Fochabers chipper ! Anyway things are easing and on a lovely day last week we visited the beautiful beach at Cullen and stopped at Fochabers on the way home for a carry out supper ( the cafe is currently closed of course). This time I had a white pudding supper which was probably the finest example of this fine delicacy I have ever enjoyed. So good!

Dropped in whilst heading north, fantastic fish and chips cooked to order, light crispy batter, fish perfect chips also great.Friendly, efficient staff, who served 3 bus loads of football fans heading home as well as their local customers Seating area also available, bright and very well run ! Up there with the best , Bruar, Gairloch and SoulBay in Southwold.Recommended

I placed my order, waited, was given it wrapped up, drove home only to find I'd been given something completely different. I drove all the way back to get the order amended and they then tried to charge me for the difference!! So much for award winning and good customer service. If you make a mistake and cost me fuel to correct it, don't try and make me pay for it! Shocking.

It used to be good 2-3years ago and it used to be open longer food is very greasy ,I dont know how it was awarded all these awards if you want a decent fish supper try La Mirage in Helmsdale in Sutherland the chips are to die for have been for years

Away from home for work, hate eating on my own. If you are ever in the area, don't want to be ripped off, get great service, with a smile, this is for you. I had the haddock supper sitting in, with curry sauce,as an extra.Takeaway price £6.80,£1 dearer to sit in, with free large cup of tea and bread and butter, I plumped for the curry sauce as well, ( bit bland for my pallet, but each to Thier own and did not spoil my experience. Closes at 8 so make sure you get in early.Special thankyou to the young girl on the till, what an asset she is to this business.

We tried numerous times to place our order by telephone but they do not answer. Why have their number online and on their Facebook page if they don't answer! You have a very long time to wait for food but when you do get it, it is good. When you have young children it is easier if you can order ahead to cut down on the waiting time. It's a part of their customer service that lets them down.

After 2 years, a return visit and back to back testing with the Lossiemouth competitor. Once again Fochabers delivered another impressive win - friendlier welcome, tastier (and larger fish), cheaper prices and a free home-made tartar sauce. Thank you Fochabers - you may be further way from the sea than Lossie but your fish qualifies for the premier division.Note to management - do not mess about with your team strategy, it's working just fine.

Popped in for our supper on our first night whilst glamping nearby. Excellent friendly service and great value for money. Great to see which boat the fish came from and which type of tatties had been used. The batter was lovely and crisp and the fish was delicious. The chips were a nice mix of chunky and crispy. perfect. Highly recommended

Had several fish and chip suppers in Scotland and this was the best so far. The cost was very reasonable.

Had a sit in meal with my Auntie who hadn't been before. Fabulous fish in light, non-greasy batter along with peas and perfectly cooked chips. Yummy home made tartar sauce. Tea, bread and butter to wash it down with. Friendly, efficient staff. Only suggestion I would make is that a pot of hot water is provided along with the mugs of tea as it got a bit cold before we'd finished our generous (pensioners) helping of food. However, the lovely waitress provided us with one when we asked. Auntie was extremely impressed. Fantastic food at a very reasonable price.10 out of 10 as always.

Ordered a big review for a group and ended up missing an item of the order which you quote happily charged me for but somehow forgot to provide it to the customer. Left one customer hungry while the rest of the bus got food. I will be back for my refund

Last weekend myself and 2 friends called into the Fochabers Chip Shop.

Visited on a busy Saturday while staying the area. A busy place with a queue and a bus load of 30 with orders in before us. We sat at one of the tables to eat and ordered at the counter. Only a short wait before two huge haddock and chips arrived. Delicious fresh fish in a crispy batter and a large portion of fresh non greasy chips filled the big plate. Both of polished it off along with two soft drinks for less than £20 - good value for the NE of Scotland. Only complaint was noticing as a left a sign saying that tea, bread and butter was included with any sit-in meal. We weren't offered this, perhaps due to being busy. Would,dnt stop us hoping back again though!

We are from Leeds and have some lovely fish and chip shops/restaurants near us. I have to say that the fish and chips we had here were superb. A good white meaty fish cooked in a light crisp batter served with non-greasy chips and mushy peas, all washed down with a grand pot of tea. Very pleasantly surprised indeed and will definitely recommend to our family in Lossiemouth.

3 friends and I had fish and chips in the Fochabers Chips Shop last week. We travelled to Fochabers especially to visit this cafe as we had heard such good things about the food there. The food was excellent, not greasy, generous portions and included a free portion for each of us of their home made tartare sauce. The fish was fresh and thick, the batter tasty and the chips were lovely. You queue up at the counter to order your meals and they give you a table number. A very nice staff memeber brings your meals to your table. Available for take away or sit in. £1 extra per meal to sit in. I would heartily recommend this place to anyone with a good appetite who appreciates great fish and chips. Prices were also very good as a comparison to others in the area. This cafe is busy with local trade which is always a good sign and also gives a fast food turnover ensuring fresh cooked food.

This chip shop is Scotland’s best and under new management they have raised their game. The special fish supper is beyond awesome truly brilliant. Cannot recommend high enough. I will be back . Freshest fish I have tasted for a while

Had to wait a while for a table as only five tables but well worth it. Lovely hot meal with tea and great So tasty

We enjoyed the F&C; today, much much better than previous visit, perhaps that was a one off. Batter crisp and fish fresh. Chips were fine as were mushy peas. Perhaps the tartar sauce was a little thin and that’s the only reason it gets a four rather than five star.

This eatery and take-away is worthy of it's many awards. There are queues here most evenings and no wonder ! The fish is bought fresh daily and cooked to perfection in a crisp, tasty batter to perfection. I'm assured that all of the other food stuffs are of the same quality. I'm not a "chippie" fan but I do love my fish and chips from the Fochabers fish and chip shop. Treat yourself ! You may have to wait a wee while as it's freshly cooked but it's worth it. There are also a few tables if you fancy a "sit-down" meal and I have noticed that the portions are generous.

1st visit, and very nice, liked the little touches like the wedge of lemon with fish , and homemade pot of tartare sauce. Chips were simply Devine, fresh crispy and tasty. Fish was fine if a little greasy at batter mix had "Blown" a bit. Probably a little too much baking powder in batter mix or something, which made it a thin and bubbly coating, holding onto undripped fat. Fish was tasty and fresh.

Been there quite often after local petanque tournaments never been disappointed. Super-charged chips freshest fish and a batter to die for. Free tea, bread and butter make the mark.

Have had fish and chips here several times, each time excellent. Also reasonably priced at just over £15 for fish and chips for two in the restaurant including tea, bread & butter.

The choice of places to eat in Fochabers is a quite limited so we decided to give this place a try, even though it didn’t get a completely positive review from the guy at the place we were staying overnight. We ate in - there’s a £1 per person cover charge to do so, although you do get a thin slice of bread & butter for that (the promised cuppa never turned up but we didn’t bother to chase), in a rather untidy area (they were very busy). The fish & chips were good rather than great - not overly large in size but enough to meet the need.

Had a sit down fish and chip supper.You pay an extra pound to sit in ,but get free tea/coffee and bread.great value and good quality.Would definitely recommend.

We visit the Fochabers Chip Shop about once a month and always enjoy the simple excellence of a perfect fish supper. This time, we were joined by our two grandchildren and although we had our usual fish and chips they had a cheseburger and chips and black pudding and chips (huge!) . We all enjoyed the food and look forward to next time.

Had not been for a while we were passing and decided to stop for supper service was slow with incomplete order when it did arrive I could not believe how fast it has gone back to just another chipshop average at best

Oh dear, things have changed since we were last here when Darren ran the business. We sat in for our F&C; and had to pay an extra two pounds to do so, never happen before. We ordered tea and bread and butter, this time the team came with a bag swimming in the mug and only long life milk cartons, and minus the bread- had to ask for it. All a bit uncouth. Before we had tea in a pot and cups with fresh milk in a small jug. Only white bread was on offer, previously there was always a choice including whole meal. It is not as though we arrived late and only two other people were seated, I just don’t think the present owner could be bothered. The mushy peas were only half mushed and were a greyish colour. The fish batter was good but the fish was just a little dry. Chips were OK. Darren always came over to see if everything was ok and chatted about which boat the fish had come from that week. Oh, and we were always offered home made tartare sauce, there wasn’t even packet tartare on the table. Could do better folks, a lot better in what was once voted BEST fish and chip shop in Scotland.

Went in for a sit down meal but the restaurant was closing. We got a takeaway instead and it was lovely, large portions and beautifully cooked fish. Great job.

Had a take out fish supper for dinner. Fish was good and tasty, batter light and crispy and the chips and mushy peas good also. Good value and a very large portion. Recommend to share one if there are two of you and not large eaters!

I was in the chip shop yesterday & the girl that was serving was fantastic! There was a little girl in with her mum & the girl serving let the little girl make up a fish box and write a message on it for her granda (waiting at home I presume), little girl was delighted! Really lovely to see. Food was brilliant & helpful, friendly staff! 5*

We visit this fish and chip restaurant about once a month and it proves that simple things done well are the best. The chip shop changed hands a few months ago but thankfully the food is as good as ever. The new owners are gradually making small changes such as new tables and chairs - which is good. HOWEVER, on our visit last week the usual pot of tea for two has been replaced by two cups with teabags - definately not a step in the right direction! This is an excellent fish and chip shop with a great reputation - please don't cut corners like this, it could be the start of the slippery slope.

Third time I've been here for sit in fish supper. Absolutely fantastic haddock in light, crisp batter along with lovely chips, tartare sauce and tea with bread and butter at a very reasonable price. Unless you have a massive appetite stick to the smaller portion. It was more than ample for us. Friendly, hardworking staff. Can't recommend highly enough.

We visited Fochabers chip shop as a party of 6. It’s quite small in the ‘eat-in’ part of the shop, so we were very lucky to get a table to seat us all. It was very busy, even at 6.15pm.

Can’t believe this time last year I posted on here strictly starting thought we would get a nice fish supper have been in a few times during the year thinking ok it was ok let that one go but they really need to get their act together fish suppers were cold had to heat up in micro my husband said they are that busy they’re just rushing meals through not good enough:(

We decided to try this chip shop whilst holidaying on the Moray coast, after using Trip Advisor to find a decent one. Everything is cooked to order, there is nothing kept in the warmers making it go all horrible and soggy so yes there is a wait for food and as it is such a popular chip shop they are busy! So be prepared to wait, it is well worth the wait. Cooked in beef dripping, amazing, they are so tasty. I never eat a whole fish but my Husband was disappointed as this time I ate it all, so there was none left for him! It was that good we decided to go back (which is very naughty) but couldn't resist. This time I tried the Haggis pudding, it was gorgeous! Also ask for their free homemade tartar sauce, gorgeous too. We will travel the 1000 mile round trip and stay in hotel just to go to the chip shop again, it really was that good!

This Chippy regularly appears in the Best in the UK guides, and it is a deserved honour. A wide selection of fresh fish, cooked to order (be prepared to wait - it is worth it) and totally yummy chips. Seriously good comfort food.

A nice and very clean fish and chips shop that works like a clock regarding service and produces excellent quality of fish and chips Had the breaded haddok myself which was excellent Highly recommended if you are around

Having been in the queue for a while, we were very disappointed to find that the chips here were not suitable for vegetarians - they are cooked in beef fat. The staff didn't seem to care that we were disappointed, hence the one star revue. They said something about no one else complaining - but we saw another family walk out after noticing the info about beef fat - hardly good customer care.

Having travelled from Elgin to try out the Award Winning chippy 2017 we were left very disappointed. The chips are good but the chicken breast supper was totally over cooked, it was like eating dry wood I couldn’t even swallow it. The batter was pathetic, it was paper thin. Also this was the smallest chicken breast I have ever seen. They must have went some to find that one. I will never part with my cash at this place ever again. Plus we stood waiting for 25 minuets. 2/10.

Visited here on recommendation from family living in the area whilst staying in Lossiemouth. Only a small eat in area and we went on a Sunday at 5 and all were taken so had to wait a while. The shop s very busy with takeaway and virtually all orders are cooked to order so every portion is fresh. The haddock suppers to eat in are only £1 supplement to eat in and the food was superb. Cooked in beef fat with traceable fish and named farmers for potato supply the product on the plate is superb. Includes bread and butter and a free tea or coffee. Cold drinks extra, but cheap. Some of the best fish and chips outside Yorkshire!

Fish and chip supper from the Fochabers Chip shop was good, plentiful and freshly cooked to order. Worth a visit.

Have been visiting Fochabers fish bar for a few years now & went last night for the first time since it changed hands . Food was good but don’t remember it being quite so expensive before ! I travel out from Elgin with my boys but not sure I will make that trip now ! £28 for three mains & juices is a little steep

When in Fochabers... get the fish! I’m not one for fried fast food, but with a moniker like “Best Fish and Chips Take-away in Scotland” I had to have some. Okay... The deep fried haddock is really good. We ordered the fish dinner and added the curry sauce dip for our chips and carried it back to our hotel. Dinner was literally a big piece of fish and fries. We added a cider and a IPA to the mix, and had ourself a filler. If it’s your thing, get the fish! Enjoy!

Our family went here on Saturday 9th June. Highly enjoyed by all! Free bread & Butter + Free tea & Coffee was a lovely highlight! Super tasty food, clean sitting area, friendly staff & quick service.

Stopped for tea, two fish suppers. Lovely fish and good sized freshly cooked portions. Never felt stodgy like you do after eating from some chip shops. Great meal and will definitely go back.

The Haddock fish and chips was delicious! Portion size was huge and the price small. Easy to see why they’ve won awards ;)

The wait in the queue was well worth it. Fab fish accompanied by a fresh lemon wedge and homemade tartar sauce. The chips were cooked to perfection too and not greasy.

In the area for the day, looking for something before heading home, remembered there was a chip shop in Fochabers, though had not been for many many years. Although you order and have a wait, it was well worth it, the fish was the best, the batter was light and just excellent on both the fish and white pudding, just the right amount for a supper, though the chips were not as good as the rest a bit under cooked.

Staying in Keith for a family visit but went to Fochabers for tea at this restaurent, a lovely meal. Hot and well cooked and great staff. Highly recommended

One of the best in the area. We travel from Port Gordon for these chips and they're always still hot when we arrive. There was certainly plenty of chips and while I'm not a fan of fish, the Red Puddings are large and good quality.

I had lovely fish and chips from here and the staff are really friendly. I haven't given 5 stars for two reasons. Firstly, it is expensive; this is the only chippy I've ever been to where the chips cost £3 for a large protion. Also, it is one of many chippys these days to advertise themselves as "the best in...." Apparently, chippys pay for these awards and it stands to reason that not every chippy in Scotland has been voted "the best chippy in Scotland". Stick to doing what you do best; namely, serving great fish and chips with a smile.

Excellent fish and chips, thin, crisp batter, no excess oil or fat. Didn’t leave with the usual off-putting oily mouth feeling. All fish freshly sourced and name of fishing vessel identified ( a nice touch). Very clean, modern cafe, friendly staff.

Had a fantastic meal to take away. Staff were all extremely friendly and polite. Just a pity they are not closer to where I live. Will be stopping by next time for a sit down meal.

I wouldnt go anywhere else for my fish and chips. This place has won numerous awards and well deserved, freindly staff and very clean . You can sit in and eat but I never have YET . Haddock to die for YUMMY

Decided to give the wife a night off from cooking. Visited the Chippy for a takeaway. They are recognised as the best in Scotland. There is usually a long queue but I was a bit later tonite so only a few in front of me. Everything is cooked to order, batter is extra crispy, chips are excellent. Staff are fast and friendly.........Highly recommended........give them a go!
