Birthday meal with two friends. Vegetarian alternatives in tasting menus often feel a bit…lame. But this was all brilliant from start to finish - a great experience for my vegetarian friend’s first tasting menu! Lovely and attentive staff. Were very accommodating of our various requests, which I really appreciated. The three of us were in a cute little room on our own, which was unexpected and made the evening a little more special. Would definitely recommend.

This is probably the best fine dining for vegans in London. It's so refreshing to see a restaurant bringing high quality vegan food - too often it's just an afterthought. All of it was very tasty but the vanilla cube was probably the highlight of the evening!

Bland bland bland Extremely disapointed by this menu where taste and savoir were not at the rendez vous. Really first and last time, this restaurant dors not merit its status of fine dining. UPDATE. Mr Gauthier contacted me after this review and offered to reimburse the price of our meals. We agreed. He then after another mail asked for our bank details of which we supplied and since then, almost two months and many mails he still has not kept to his promise. In his last mail he said he would chase up the payment with his financial team and since then nothing despite several mails. We did not ask for a refund, he offered one!. We are more disappointed than we were before. The restaurant has our financial details and we have just the memory of a fade meal and and a feeling being let down.

Sadly average & overpriced. I'd been excited to visit Gauthier for a long time but was left disappointed after the 5 course early evening menu. The portions were tiny, and I know vegan can be about showcasing good veg but I was expecting a bit more excitement, interesting or different ingredients, and at least some decent protein somewhere. This was all lacking. A course of 2 pieces of asparagus was a bit of a joke, and the desserts were minute, a 5p size circle of sorbet and a single strawberry cut into 4. Felt very overpriced and this was sadly our worst vegan meal we had all weekend as we visited multiple vegan places on our trip to London.

We went to Gauthier to celebrate my birthday and it was a wonderful evening. We were put in a private room in the back of the restaurant which was very unique and we really enjoyed the privacy. The staff are unbelievable, our waiter was very informative and ensured our glasses were always full. The tasting menu is delicious, the artichoke dish was my favourite, and the dish sizes were perfect. Our only bit of criticism would be on the ravioli dish as we all found it overly bitter. Otherwise, it was a great evening and we will be back!

The restaurant is extraordinarily expensive. I appreciate the effort to try and make a vegan French menu which tries to match Michelin star quality — however maybe this was a challenge too far. If I am paying this much for a meal (£120+ pp) I just expected better.

This was a highly anticipated dinner for us, had been reading reviews and finally decided to visit after 6 months of debating a £95 pp set menu to for 2 vegans and 2 usual meat eaters. Unfortunately even the vegans were not impressed with the food. Its a unique endeavour to try french vegan food, but the dishes did not have a lot of character. The flavours were just missing in some mains, and while you will see complex ingredients come together like pineapples, white wine jus, kelp caviar, vegan bacon - nothing really felt spectacular. The highlight for us was the super crispy brioche bun that comes in the starters. If you are dairy intolerant / vegan try the set menu at Scully instead. Staff and service are top notch though.

Arrived and placed on a table with a dirty table cloth. No music so very quiet with all the tables full. Drinks took ages to arrive and then the food. While its tasty, for the price the portion size is a joke (got home and made dinner). Bathrooms with red lights and waiters/waitresses whispering. Not an ideal night. An experience though I know so many better places for better food and ambience.

Read all the bad reviews before you book- I wish I had done so. Staggered there are so many good reviews and wonder about their veracity. We are vegan for health and climate change, and in London, as we often are to visit our son there. We were then off to the theatre. Booked the meal for the 2 of us, as our son was busy at the time I booked the restaurant. Unable to nook for our preferred time, as they were supposedly unable to give a 17.30 reservation- but they only had 3 covers when we were eating. So, we had to eat at 17.00. We arrived a little early and unable to get in, until exactly 17.00hrs. At that time, our son said his friend was too ill for his evening out, so he would like to join us at the table just for a chat- he is not vegan, so not to eat. He was due to finish work at 17.00hrs and would then walk to the restaurant- about 30 minutes from work so he could see us, as we see each other infrequently as live so far away. We were let in at 17.00 and I asked the rather offensive woman who let us in and showed us to table, if our son could arrive and sit at the table. I said he only needed a drink or if one course was available that would be great. She said she had to check with the manager and deal with the one other customer who had also arrived at 17:00 hours. Our son left work and started to walk towards the restaurant. I had no answer from the woman and our canapes arrived. I went to wash my hands, as only finger food, as did my husband. As retired doctors, we are careful about hygiene and never touch door handles once our hands are washed but this is practically impossible in this place, as very unhygienic double pull door handle to escape loos. Returned to the table and 2 canapes. I asked again about our son, and woman said she hadn’t asked manager yet. Unhelpful woman eventually asked at 17.15, when our son and walked halfway and said no, we had booked for 2, so they would only accept 2 people at our table! I was confused, as many tables were empty, so they weren’t short of space or chairs- I wondered if we hadn’t been allowed to book at our preferred time of 17.30 as a big group due. This might explain why they refused our son, who we then couldn’t see, and he had wasted much time walking to this place. BUT no one else arrived and the place stayed empty until we left at 7pm in disgust. We ate the canapes, and they were tasteless. I hadn’t finished my pea velouté and they tried to clear it away- unheard of in a good restaurant. We also had to pay a lot for water- we normally have tap water. The next part of the tasting menu came and again it was tasteless. I cook vegan food at home, and it is much tastier. I was also starting to worry about the amount of protein in the food. The food served to us was high in fat, as the “croissant” was very greasy, and no values for the food are given – probably as so high in fat and salt and low in protein. Very tasteless risotto followed- a bit of protein as peas and broad beans but tasteless. We were asked completely biased questions as to how good the meal was, and so I answered honestly that it was not very good at all. They hadn’t expected that. As doctors, we are taught to ask questions that are not leading- i.e. not “is the meal great?” or” is it all good?” which is how we had been asked about our experience twice by this stage. So, I answered honestly that meal tasteless. That was not liked, and service then was even worse- they never re-filled our water for example- also a sign of a good restaurant if it is done. I had also mentioned that the “music” was appalling, and I would prefer it to be turned off, as continuous banging and not melodic at all. We had a very rude reply, telling us we should know it was “blah blah blah very well-known and important music”! Well – we are knowledgeable as have been involved with music a great deal and it was NOT melodic or well known at all- just dire. Service continued to be very poor. We had 2 parts of the whole meal that tasted good. One of the 2 petit fours and cremini mushrooms and sauce that went with it from Japan. However, the utensil given to us to eat that part of meal was totally inadequate to get the sauce up- it was a knife and fork. So, I had to ask for a teaspoon. Near the end of the meal, we ran out of water in bottle, and they never asked us if we wanted more. Last pudding had happy birthday on plate scrawled on with chocolate, but they gave me that plate. When I booked, I explained it was for a special occasion, my husband’s birthday and so they did recall a birthday, but they got the wrong person! I signed email with an obvious female name too. Dreadful meal, place and non-existent service. Had to pay for service as added to bill at 15%. Compete waste of money for it all and ruined our day and special occasion.

We came here for lunch on Saturday and had the petit diner menu, which is a 5+ course tasting. The dining room is quiet and tasteful and the staff are attentive. We started with some canapes; a very nice mushroom vichyssoise, and a somewhat meh avocado tart (the main taste of which was the oil in which the case was fried). Next came brioche fluff, a delightful vegan brioche/croissant served with a grassy, refreshing espuma. An excellent course. Then we had torched carrot (a bit one dimensional), followed by a saffron risotto (nicely cooked but very little saffron flavour). After came a potato and parsnip dish which would have been quite roast-dinner in flavour were it not for a blackcurrant gel (which really lifted the dish). Pre desert was billed as an exceptionally refreshing take on a fruit salad. It wasn't, it was very sweet. Main desert was a petit-four sized almond and pear confection. Nice enough, but the advertised chocolate was absent. We've eaten at lots of vegetarian and vegan restaurants so we know the drill. This was nice enough but really just a bit ordinary.

Food was very good mostly. Some dishes were better than others. Felt a bit rushed, amuse bouche came straight away even before we had a drink ordered. One particular staff member was rude, and a little pretentious and arrogant. My wife tried a wine, and didn’t like it. She chose another one to try and the French long haired waiter just poured an entire glass, and walked off. My wife didn’t like the wine, and when she said it to long haired pretentious French man he disagreed with her about what she said about the wine. Maybe remove the 12.5% service charge so he actually had to put a bit of effort in. It isn’t cheap to eat there so really you should be looked after extremely well, not looked down on or treated poorly, which I feel we were. Any other staff we encountered were nice and friendly.

I found most of the dishes exciting enjoyed almost every course save for the desserts - they were a little dry and not as rich or refreshing as i might have hoped. Would have appreciated a second portion of the preceding courses. The veggie guest was not as impressed as it is fully vegan and was left wanting. Service was precise if not a little clinical and the setting could be seen as a little cold. I enjoyed the privacy of the seating being together while apart. We spent about £120 per person.

I booked the tasting menu for 7:30pm. I arrived 20 minutes early and was told to come back at 7:30pm (normally restaurants can seat you a bit earlier, typically 10 minutes before). I came back at 7:25pm and waited to go into the restaurant, a queue was already waiting to get in but they were not seating anyone until the customers already in the restaurant had left and they reset the tables. We were let in after 7:30pm only because it was a cold evening but seating actually started 5 to 10 minutes later with no apologies or explanation. After a further 10 to 15 minutes waiting the food started to arrive at the table but the first drink only arrived 40 minutes after the booking time. I ordered the drink pairings. It would have been nice and helpful to have a copy of the tasting menu placed on the table. The decor is plain and simple. The restaurant is small but cosy and warm. The staff were attentive but could have been friendlier. I enjoyed some of the dishes but not all. My favourite was the pasta course and my least favourite dishes were the salsify and parsnip, the latter supposed to be like a hare dish (I’d prefer if plant based restaurants just celebrated the produce they used rather than doing a mock version of a meat dish which in most cases tastes nothing like the real thing). I enjoyed the drink pairings but found the dessert wine too sweet for the food dish and my palate. Overall the restaurant was worth a visit but in my opinion there are much better plant based restaurants in London.

I was really looking forward to this as we don't eat that much vegetarian food and even less vegan. On the positive side the staff were friendly, the room very pleasant and the textures of the food impressive along with the work and imagination that went into it. On the down side I just found the whole thing rather underwhelming with certainly no wow factor. Every course was presented like a work of art but when tasted really struggled to see what the idea behind all the work was and felt flat after all but two courses. It all tasted rather bland and so I find it rather surprising how may people say it was the best meal they have ever had.

Fabulous meal and attentive knowledgable staff. I’ve never had vegan French food and it was an amazing experience especially the dessert.

Absolutely amazing food and service! We came to London from the U.S. specifically to try this resturant, and it was worth the trip!

Absolutely beautiful dining experience, from beginning to end. Every detail is exquisite, from the warm and comfortable restaurant setting, the theatrical yet friendly delivery of each dish, to the menu itself where every dish is a delight. It’s such a treat to spend a few hours here, being looked after so well by the welcoming & professional team. I already can’t wait to come back. Thank you Alexis!

AMAZING! French vegan cuisine at its finest. Wonderful Michelin star experience, including wine pairing and perfectly matched courses. What makes this place special is that it has amazing vegan food with a fine dining experience- it is not a restaurant that has only 1 or 2 “vegetarian or vegan friendly” dishes. Restaurants like that have mediocre attempts at plant based meals- it is specifically a plant based restaurant. At Ghautier SoHo- every vegan course comes with an amazing array of flavors and surprises. Beautifully thought out dishes that anyone would find spectacular, regardless of food preference. The service is also worth praising- attentive and knowledgeable servers that go above and beyond to ensure a quality experience. Don’t miss out on this gem while you are in London.

We tried the petit dinner tasting menu. The whole evening was incredible. The atmosphere, service, and food exceeded my expectations and we are already planning our next visit to try the Summer menu. Each dish was clearly very well thought out and executed, and I tried some of the best food I have ever eaten. All the servers were professional and helpful. There were only 3 other tables in use on the floor we were on, making the experience feel intimate whilst still professional. Whether vegan or not, this is definitely worth trying. Thoroughly recommend.

Always amazing food and service. This is our third visit to the Soho restaurant and the food and service is always out of this world. The passion for good vegan food always shines through.

There are books that upon finishing I have had to sit and need to wash over me. Those books where I don't want the feeling - the world I had briefly entered - to end. I could say that of Soho's Gauthier restaurant. I have had the privilege of eating at many Michelin starred restaurants over the years and recently Gauthier's twice. On both occasions here I had my understanding and expectations of vegan food challenged and expanded. It's not just the beautiful presentation - which must simply involve tweezers for some dishes, given how delicately composed they are - but the flavours... The flavours. They're so deep. The course as described by our charming waitress was definitely what we were eating, but there were other flavours hidden within. Flavours my dining companion and I spent the entire evening excitedly discussing. The staff were welcoming and accommodating. We took our time with the food and the superb wine parings - each a delight. Nothing was rushed... but the meal was still over too quickly. Such is the way with great experiences. The menu rotates seasonally and I will be back as soon as it changes. Before visiting this stellar establishment I would not have hesitated to say that I am not vegan. Now I have to correct that. Now I have to say, I am not a vegan... yet. Bravo. Really. Bravo.

Incredible meal at Gauthier, Soho. Alexis successfully challenges the preconceptions of vegan food, with the most amazing ingredients, flavours and presentation. I would go back in a heartbeat and would encourage anyone else - vegan or meat-eater - to visit. You won't regret it.

We visited Gauthier for an evening meal after a trip to the theatre. We were drawn to the restaurant by recommendation and the fact that it is serves fully animal free food. Some of the revues lambast the reception welcome and style of the place, but we didn’t have any negative experience of this and in fact we found it quite fun and you just need to embrace the slight quirkiness of it. The service was excellent, our French waitress explained all the courses and we also had the accompanying wine flight which she also explained. We had the 10 course grand diner menu, and of course it’s all small portions but we were fully satisfied by it all. Some very imaginative food here, and all super tasty. It took about 3 hours, but the time flew and we had a great evening, and our fellow diners all seemed to be of a similar vein. Yes, of course it’s expensive but I think compares well with other restaurants we have paid similar amounts to visit. Great location in soho too, if you want pre or post cocktails in one of the many bars. So, if you fancy a top end vegan meal I’d recommend this for sure.

I used to be a real Gauthier fan many years ago before they went totally vegan. We had the set Petit Dejeuner @ £55. Both me & my friend were very disappointed!! Teeny tiny portions & the main tummy filler was an unhealthy brioche puff (which incidentally was cold in the centre & although this was pointed out to the waiter , they did not offer to bring a fresh hot brioche to replace it). The carrot course was one very small baby carrot (!!!). I would suggest if they want teeny weeny portions , they should add some colourful veggies or salads as an accompaniment . The flavours were ok but didn’t leave me licking my lips. It used to be a favourite venue of mine before they went vegan & I do like vegan food but not stodge & I certainly don’t expect to feel like I haven’t had an adequate portion of vegetables, which is how I & my friend felt after this meal. I was a disappointed diner at Gauthier Soho.
