We were looking for a nice intimate restaurant for the Saturday evening of August Bank Holiday weekend. Having left it to the last minute as in a few days before, we had our doubts of finding one. I gave Gwetsy Cyrmu a call, not expecting too much. To my surprise, they were very accommodating and managed to fit us in (a table of 5). We are glad they did. It was for a mini family reunion and we all had a great time. The food was tasty and the ambience also helped set the tone for a relaxing stress free evening. The staff made us feel very welcome from the moment we arrived and the service was excellent throughout. We never felt rushed at any point, and in fact we were the last guests to leave. Whilst the restaurant is nice and cosy, the place also looks a good spot to have a cold drink or two on a warm Summers day or a Sunset evening. We sat outside and enjoyed a drink with a view before we were seated. Cold San Miguel on draught hit the spot.Thank you for a superb 5 star evening.

This seafront Welsh restaurant is without doubt one of the finest eateries in Ceredigion. We dine all over the UK and Europe but hold Gwesty Cymru in the highest regard. Beautiful food, beautifully cooked and presented, is complimented by friendly, attentive and professional service, which, combined with the great kindness shown to our elderly friend, was a model of its kind. We have yet to be disappointed. Head Chef Jones, has his own style, but it is one which clearly shows the influence of his time with Michelin greats like Pierre Koffmann, Michele Roux jnr and Marco Pierre White. (And I have to say that on one occasion, during his absense, the cooking of his second chef was of exceptional standard.)Our last meal was of pan roated breast of pheasant, crispy bacon, cabbage Koffmann, fondant potato and DaMhile apple brandy sauce. Cooked to perfection the food painted pictures of Tante Claire and La Gavroche. Our desert was Chocolate "Crunchie" with Halen Mon salted caramel sauce. Well, the rich solid chocolate played the main melody and caramel sauce with crunchie sang the descant. Rich and truly wonderful. A good selection of wines and liqueurs easily ensures that any meal will be complimented perfectly. We very much look forward to our next visit in the New Year and until then send to all our warmest Seasonal Greetings.

We visited this restaurant as it was rated the top three on trip advisor. However, we were severely disappointed. The only reason we're not rating this is a 1 star is because of the starter. For starter, we had a pumpkin and apple salad at £7 which was delicious. It was presented really well and was full of flavour. For main, we ordered the hake with squid ink risotto at £19 and slow cooked welsh lamb at £20, with a side order of chips. The hake tasted very basic and quite salty. The risotto did have quite a bit of flavour, however there was just too much of it and so the dish got quite repetitive and boring. I would have much preferred to have some vegetables with a reduced portion of the risotto. It was definitely not worth £19 due to substance and taste. The welsh lamb was a relatively small portion, and the mashed potato tasted like something that had been microwaved. The lamb was nice, but nothing special, which you'd expect for that price. Overall, we felt we could have cooked something of the same level and we're not the best cooks! For dessert we ordered the crunch at £6.50 and the pana cotta at £6.50, The crunch lacked any real effort. It was just a solid block of chocolate, with broken cinder toffee on top and caramel sauce. The chocolate block was so dominating that I couldn't finish it. If I'd have known it was just going to be a solid chocolate block then I wouldn't have ordered it . It definitely could have done with either more sauce, or a smaller portion so it wasn't so dominating. The pana cotta was nice but again nothing special. It was simple pana cotta with a few berries on top. The menu not he table also mentioned about a crumble with the pana cotta, but there was no crumble. The menu online doesn't mention the crumble, so maybe there was a mistake on the menu on the table. Our table wasn't he best as it was right by the door, so every tie someone left you felt the cold. The restaurant is quite small so not a lot of choice in terms of seating. It was also quite busy, so if you did want to visit then I'd suggest booking. The service was slow, however there was a group of 7 in and all eh tables were taken However, since there's only about 6 tables in total and there were three servers, potentially it could have been quicker service. Total bill for two people, three courses, and two diet cokes was approx. £80 which we think is extortionate for what we got If however, all meals were served to the standard and quality of the starter, then maybe we would have been a lot happier with the price.Overall, we would not recommend.

After a long 4 hour drive, we stumbled on this restaurant whilst ambling on the sea front in the September sunshine. The staff were friendly and the service was very efficient, the atmosphere was very relaxed and warm. A sensible limited menu with Welsh produce presented plenty of choice. The "arancini" starter and pork belly main courses were both excellent and plentiful, all washed down with a very good bottle of South African Pinotage. All very sensibly priced and very enjoyable, highly recommeded.

We went there because we wanted some Welsh food. However, I was disappointed with the set lunch. The price of £16 was reasonable - however, after a nice starter of fish cake, I then was served a giant plate of pasta with bits of seabass...it was dry, tasteless and very hard to eat. I left half of it - and would have left more if I could. I don't think sea bass goes well with tagellini. Or maybe the chef should have tried serving the fish chinese style with rice. However, I had to ask for parmesan and chilli sauce to try and make it more appertising... it was futile. The team was great- nothing wrong with them at all. The ambience was good too.

Each time we visit Aber, dinner at Gwesty Cymru is a 'must'. Quality ingredients are transformed into delicious meals and we have never been disappointed. Very occasionally the service has been a bit hit & miss (possibly inexperienced staff) but the amazing food makes up for this. It's a small restaurant so to guarantee a table advance booking is advised. Drinks on their front patio overlooking the sea and watching the sunset & the starlings is magical.

Gwesty Cymru served us one of the very best meals (in our case, lunch) that we ate in Wales. Oh, my! Just thinking about it makes me wish it were closer so that we could visit more often. The chef knows how to layer subtle flavors so that the dish ends up surpassing the ingredients he (or she?) uses. I ordered the £9.95 "Meal Deal" of Risotto, but this had to be the best Risotto I've ever eaten. Other family members ordered a plate of prawns, smoked salmon and soup (£10.95), and a rarebit and soup (£6.95). We shared a cheese platter (£8.50) for dessert. Every bite was exquisite. Our server, Huw, also deserves high praise. He understands fine dining, met our every need, and deserved a nice tip, which we were more than happy to leave.

Gwesty Cymru is the restaurant for the similarly named hotel on Aberystwyth seafront. The restaurant part is down some steps (might be difficult with mobility problems) and - for it's reputation - smaller than I expected. Parking is a problem in Aberystwyth so you might want to bear that in mind if travelling in, otherwise it's in walking distance of some of the other hotels on the seafront. We had both lunch and dinner there and it's worth booking because it was fairly busy on a May weekday, even (probably) before the main season. Staff service was very good and there weren't long waits between courses and the courses were very good! There's a fair amount of overlap between the lunch and evening menus with lunchtime offering a range of smaller options including salads. I had a 10oz sirloin steak at lunchtime with a side of garlic mushrooms along with the very good chips. I asked for the steak medium rare and it was cooked a little on the rare side but that's my preference rather than being overdone as it was full of taste. The garlic mushrooms were, pleasingly, full of garlic taste and altogether the dish worked well and didn't need additional seasoning. The dessert was a nice, tangy apple and gooseberry crumble. The price for the steak was £21 which I thought was very good value for such a good meal. In fact, we had such a good lunch we booked in for dinner as well and enjoyed a 3 course meal. Service wasn't included but for the price and the staff attentiveness I thought a tip was well deserved. Welsh and English are spoken in the restaurant and it was a comfortable enough environment for me to try out my less than extensive Cymraeg vocabulary.

They use the local lamb and beef which have great flavour. The restaurant does a super homemade scotch egg (available for breakfast and as a starter in the evening) accompanied with a potato rosti and special tomato sauce; it is so good I asked if they would sell me one to take home but no such luck! I was very impressed by the wine list too - they even had mead! My favourite! The service was friendly and my food was served in a reasonable amount of time given how busy it was. The only slight negative is how small it is. They seem to have tried to fit as many tables as possible in, so it was a bit chlaustrophobic. Delicious food with attentive service. Homemade soup, thai pork strips or the cod goujons were all lovely starters. Slow roast daube of Welsh beef main course was superb and highly recommended, accompanied by horseradish mash, confit parsnips, veg and red wine gravy. The disappointing thing was that they did not provide gluten-free yorkshire pudding, although we’d booked well in advance and explained. The same thing happened with the dessert I’d ordered beforehand which was pear, ginger and blueberry crumble with honeycombe icecream - only no crumble at all for the gluten-free, just the stewed fruit but with sorbet offered as a replacement for the crumble. Although the sorbet was delicious I was really looking forward to having a crumble and stewed fruit just isn’t the same! That’s the reason for the 4 star rating. We found it on trip advisor and so glad we did. There was no availability anywhere else and we was shocked when we got a table so easy! The food was tremendous my beef was so tender and tasty. Will definitely be returning.

This cannot be a full review, as it is baseed on one meal taken in the front garden. I cannot comment on the inside resaurant. We took the last available table on a warm May evening and watched the sun set as we ate.

My sister and I had a delicious meal here for one of our special occasion nights out during a week long trip around Wales. My sister really loves veggies and the chef was so accommodating in meeting her requests for lots of veggies with her fish. The staff went above and beyond to may our visit special. The only negative aspect to the evening was the sound inside. I think it's likely due to the shape of the room, but it was extremely loud despite only a few other people inside. They were laughing and having a good time, which I can't fault them for, but I don't think they realized how loud they were. It was difficult for my sister and I to have a conversation. I think in the future I would sit outside if possible.

A beacon of haute cuisine in the culinary desert that is Aberystwyth. Stayed there recently and chose to have 2 evening meals in this restaurant. The staff were charming, the traditional menu and choice of wines interesting, and the food delicious! Judging by the difficulty of booking a table and the fact that the restaurant was full on both occasions, we were clearly not alone in judging this restaurant the best in Aberystwyth. Can’t recommend it highly enough!

We had diner here tonight and it was fantastic! Got tired of eating in typical fish & chips food corners, we decided having a good Welsh diner. This place was recommended on Trip Advisor by many and they are dawn right! Lamb, steak, fish (sea brass) and vegetarian, it was all very good with a very polite priced glass of wine!

Pob un, great short menu, sensible price for a meal that is prepared with a passion and served with a smile and with grace.Gwesty Cymru offers tables to dine inside and outside. There is a small cute bar where you can be served a pre dinner drink while you are given time to choose your meal before sitting down at your table.(we have always pre booked)The dinning room is always clean, the tables are laid up perfectly, the tables are cleared quickly with no empty plates or used glasses.once your meal has been served you will be gently prompted if there is any thing else you need and if the meal is ok.At all times you are never rushed, you get the feeling that the table is yours till you are genuinely finnised, well done Gwesty Cymru. The wash rooms are plesent and tidy.As stated when the weather allows you can dine outside and when we have dined outside our meal has never been ruined by other diners smoking.I would like to take this opportunity to thank all members of staff who have always made us welcome. If in Aber pre book and have a gorgeous experance.

We managed to get a last minute reservation and were pleased we did. The food was delicious and not unreasonably priced, although it wasn't cheap. You get what you pay for in this case! The staff were really attentive, and the atmosphere was pleasant. Would certainly go back if ever in the area again.

We really really liked this restaurant. Three of us had dinner here on a balmy July evening. We really enjoyed the prompt waiter, who was funny and very good. Two of us had the broccoli/blue cheese chowder, which was excellent. The other diner had the lamb appetizer, which was cooked perfectly pink. For entrées, one had the lamb rump, one had the special of the day fish dish, and one had a vegetarian dish, a stuffed corgette. There was a nice wine selection. We watched the sun beginning to set over the Cardigan Bay seashore. Prices were very reasonable for the excellent quality. A definite recommendation for any diner.

We were in Aberystwyth for a day trip by the sea and seeking somewhere to lunch but were disppointed that the choices seemed poor and far between. We stumbled across this place and took a chance to get out of the scorching sun. The waitress was very welcoming. We only wanted something light to eat so opted for Welsh Rarebit and a salad both were very good. We were not impressed with Aberystwyth itself but if we returned we would certainly try this restaurant again.

My parents visited Gwesty Cymru on 2nd July for a quick drink in the sun while out for day in Aberystwyth. We have visited this place before and it has a lovely place to sit outside when the sun is shining. They only ordered 2 drinks, 2 lemonade with a dash of Lime. These two drinks came to £7!! I know soft drinks can be expensive but charging £3.50 for a lemonade and a dash of lime is ridiculous. It has put them off going back in future which is a shame as the place and the food is lovely.

I was in Aberystwyth on a beautiful, sunny day and needed lunch. I was initially tempted by a quick sandwich or a take-away from a fish and chip shop, but in the end I decided to seek somewhere with more style. I happened to pass Gwesty Cymru (which I had heard of previously) and decided to give its restaurant a try.

Regularly eat in this, our favourite eatery in the whole of Ceredigion. Excellent food both at lunchtime and in the evening. Also a great place to sit outside and people watch on the promenade. Can’t fault the food, staff or service. We would recommend Gwesty Cymru anyone and can’t speak highly enough of it. 11/10.

Loved this hotel and loved our room - white room (room 8). It was just perfect. Spacious, comfortable, lovely decor, romantic, amazing bathroom and a great sea view. Your right at the top of the hotel so you didn’t hear other guests coming or going, which for me, was great as I’m a light sleeper. Really lovely to hear the waves, very relaxing. Would love to come back. Highly recommend!

The hotel was good, not excellent. The room was nice, but the carpet in the hall and stairway needs to be cleaned. Our room (blue room) has sea view with two chairs in front of the windows so we could see the sunset from our room. The food in the restaurant was very good, although the house wine was very moderate.

We booked for the 6pm sitting - there are 2 sittings each evening. The staff are really friendly and welcoming. The feel of the restaurant is quite relaxed. There isn't a lot of space between each table but you don't feel as if you are sat on top of each other. The food was absolutely amazing. The scallops to start were perfectly cooked and my main of plaice stuffed with prawns was heavenly. It was an amazing meal - the best of our four night stay in the area.

We met up with our youngest daughter for lunch to celebrate her birthday. She chose where we were eating and we were not disappointed. My husband and daughter had some garlic bread before the main course and then both had the Beer Battered Cod Goujons handcut chips, mushy peas and homemade tartare sauce which they loved. I had a platter of Magic Welsh Rarebit on toast, mushroom soup, a beer battered cod goujon. This came with salad, onion chutney, potato salad and delicious focaccia bread. For dessert my husband and daughter had a cheese board to share which they loved. I had a coffee. My only criticism, and it is a personal choice, three of the four main desserts had alcohol in and I didn't feel like the cheesecake or ice cream which were the only choices that were alcohol free. However seeing them served to other tables they did look delicious. We will definitely be visiting again later in the year when we visit Aberystwyth again.

The Wild FowlerBritish

After a long day of exploring Aberystwyth and surrounding areas. We thought we should treat ourselves to a meal out, we were googling places to go locally and found The Wild Fowler was only 20 minutes away. Perfect! We booked a table (worth noting if you ever visit) and arrived to be greeted straight away and shown where our table was. The staff were so lovely and the atmosphere felt cosy and welcoming which we appreciated. We got our drinks very quickly and then food came…I had the wild mushrooms on bloomer toast which was incredible, such a lovely sauce too! My partner had the squid bites which were so beautifully cooked! We both decided on the ribs for mains and it did not disappoint, the meat fell off the bone and the chips were delicious! The presentation was outstanding and we really felt looked after by everyone! The prices may seem expensive but it is so worth it for the quality and care that goes into the food and service.

The Ship and Castle Publocation-icon1 High St.British

We were recommended by some CAMRA colleagues back in Shropshire, for us to visit The Ship & Castle Pub, and we finally managed to get there after opening time on a Friday afternoon in early March. A warm friendly welcome from the Barman, who we assume was the Landlord?, and he made us feel immediately at home in this hidden gem of a pub. The pub is spacious, well decorated, and well furnished and has everything you would want from a good local pub experience. After regularly visiting nearly every Pub in the Aber and surrounding areas over the past 40+ years, I just can't believe why we haven't found this wonderful pub before, and we have to say The Ship and Castle is now at the top of our own Pub League venues to visit and relax in, every time we visit Aber. We will be back again soon! and we will enthusiastically recommend a visit to The Ship and Castle to all our visiting friends and relatives too.
