Kafeneon in Newcastle upon Tyne

If you are a fan of Greek cuisine, you will not be disappointed by the Kafaneon restaurant. The cuisine is delicious and transports you to Greece. We find the typical flavors of the country. The dishes are extremely well prepared. It’s a real taste pleasure. I highly recommend!!

Fantastic food and the service was great. Really relaxed environment, only issue maybe for anyone with physical disabilities requiring a wheel chair

Loved our meal here, very traditional Greek authentic flavours, not often you can eat a lamb shank with out a knife, but I did here, this was perfect!! My partner, a pescatarian, loved her stuffed peppers too. Staff friendly, helpful and knowledgeable about what they are serving. Would return and recommend. Thank you so much. Any fans of the chicken souvlaki should be aware they’ve changed from breast to thigh. Three of our table left hungry. Service was lovely but if you’re going down the ‘thigh is traditional’ route please tell those ordering that this is the case (or at least update the menu for repeat customers). Very disappointing.

This restaurant reminds me of a photo of a restaurant in Greece, but they forgot to bring the actual flavour and freshly made food. The food was almost like reheated and not at the level of comparable in price places. I was surprised to get this kind of food from so well reviewed restaurant.

We went on a date and we could not decide so we had the mezze sharing platter. It was really good but there was soo much all piled onto one plate. Great atmosphere Decorated like greece It gets busy and its soo busy its hard to get the attention of staff.

Food was very tasty and the portion sizes are very good. Main menu is reasonably priced, with desserts being slightly expensive. Service was quite slow and communication between staff was a real issue. We were asked a couple of times if we wanted desserts and drinks, etc, which we had already ordered. Overall, a good experience had all round, and looking forward to returning. Update 01/03/2024: I arrived as a party of 6 for lunch, and was seated straight away. Service was quick and efficient, and food was as lovely as ever. Therefore, I have revised my review to be 5 stars, rather than the 4 stars overall given previously (and the 3 stars service)!

The staff were lovely and helpful explaining dishes for us. We really enjoyed our meal there and will definitely be dining at Kafeneon again!

It felt more Greek than some tavernas I've visited in Greece!! The food was lovely and fresh, and the service was excellent. I would highly recommend booking as by 1230 it was absolutely rammed.

Excellent place for a meal with the family. We had halloumi and Greek nachos for starters, Greek gyros, souvlaki and beef stifado, all were well presented and tasted amazing. Recommend the walnut cake for dessert. Attentive staff and friendly atmosphere. Food was amazing. Will definitely recommend

Great food and service is standard on every visit, so much better than the chain Greek restaurants. Try the Meze platters, you get bit of everything and a lot! Holidayed in Greece for many years and this is authentic Greek Food.

Had a lovely Saturday evening. It’s so popular I would encourage to reserve a table in advance. Great shared veggie and meat mezze. Will be back next time in the city.

Lovely spot in town that I would recommend going to! The service was superb and the chicken souvlaki was wonderful. The only improvement needed is with the fries that were not edible but otherwise 5/5!

Had a cracking meal here last night. The manager who served us was very friendly, continually smiling, and welcomed us warmly. We had the halloumi and the Greek sausage stew for starters. The Moussaka and a chicken Gyros (without tzatziki) for mains. Glass of wine and a bottle of beer came to £40.35. Food was hot, fresh tasting, and the salad crisp. Will definitely consider returning next time we're in Newcastle.

Welcoming by staff upon arrival, we didn't book and chose dishes from the set day menu. Nice food and portion size. Will visit again in the future.

I appreciated the fast and friendly service and they offer a decent selection for vegetarians. While the atmosphere was pleasant and intimate, it didn't particularly stand out. My starter was nice. However, I found my main a little bland in flavor and slightly heavy. The pricing, at £24 for 2 courses and a coffee, felt fair although perhaps leaning towards the expensive side. Overall, it was OK but nothing stood out to me that would make me want to go back.

I've been coming here for years and as always, the food was delicious, the staff went above and beyond, and we had a great evening.

First time visitors who have to say this place is great. Food is excellent, staff are all better than needed and the prices (excluding beer) are perfect. We will return! Update in Jan 2024: We have returned many times now and have realised that booking a table is optimal. The place is so busy that booking is the only way. This is the best Greek food in Newcastle for sure.

This is a great little restaurant. Starters and mains feel home made age and with good quality ingredients. Gyros are great. The sauces also deserve praise as do dips and flat breads. The cocktails vary. Worth asking first what glass it comes in. The bramble (gin cocktail)comes in a small glass and thus tastes very alcoholic. But I've had really nice cocktails previously. Nice service and welcoming. Highly recommended.

WOW visited on 20/1/2024 lunch. From when we walked in it felt so welcoming. The staff were amazing so attentive, the food amazing. Lovely and clean. We eat out a lot and this is truly a peice of Greek paradise...Thank you so much we will be back.

One of my favourite places in Newcastle. The staff are always lovely, food generous and tasty, and the restaurant always has a lovely & relaxed atmosphere.

A bit disappointed… as a greek person I was expecting better food. Cons: the food was below average. We ordered the pork souvlaki main and requested it without a salad. The souvlaki was very salty (seasoning failed) and of average quality. The fries were re-fried and super oily, some burned, really not edible (see photo). We didn’t touch them. After we finished our meal we mentioned to the waitress that the fries were not fit for consumption. She apologised and checked in the kitchen. She came back with a £2 discount on our bill which is a bit ridiculous. We also ordered Lamb Kleftiko. The meat was good but the potatoes were literally swimming in oil (see photo). This came with a “Greek salad”, which wasn’t greek at all! Mostly iceberg with no dressing and a thin slice of tomato (Greek salads main ingredient is tomato and does not contain lettuce or iceberg). Tzatziki and olives were delicious! Pros: the waitress was polite. The atmosphere was nice.

We had a lovely, cosy table in the window. The food was quick considering me ordered the meze and was absolutely delicious! The staff were so welcoming and friendly. We were constantly checked up on during our time here. We will definitely be returning!

Works xmas function organised by a colleague, we we shown upstairs to our own private room, super friendly staff, fast and efficient. Food was absolutely delicious, I had the halloumi fries and the big fat Greek gyros which was stunning. Well looked after, an excellent experience. Will be coming back here more often!

I don't know what you've done to your Gyros, but pulled pork, all mashed up is definitely not Gyros. Shame because it used to be gorgeous.

Called here with my friend before going to the theatre and it was fantastic. We had the sharing meze starter, I highly recommend. Hummus and tzatziki were lovely, halloumi and pitta to die for! Stuffed vine leaves unbelievable. Everything perfect. Choosing from the menu was the hardest part as there are so many tasty options! We both opted for chicken gyros and it was a huge portion and delicious. All very authentic Greek dishes. The service was great! Atmosphere lovely. We had cocktails which were perfect too. Booked to come here for lunch with family on a day trip to Newcastle. We had no expectations before we arrived but the food and service were excellent and totally exceeded my expectations! On arrival we were greeted by friendly and welcoming staff and taken straight to our table. We were all surprised by how busy the restaurant was and how big it was over 3 floors (or even more!!). The restaurant is light and airy and well presented. Our orders were taken quickly and starters arrived in no time at all. Everyone said how tasty they were and looked forward to our mains which did not disappoint. I had the lamb kofta pitta which came with some of best chips I’ve tasted! Everyone was so happy with their food and the quality of the food was excellent. Staff were available when we needed anything and were always really pleasant. When we were waiting to leave 2 walk in diners arrived and were greeted warmly even though they looked concerned they had no reservation. I am sure they would have received the same great food and service we did! I can’t wait to go back again!

I was in Newcastle for work recently and needed to go for dinner. After walking g around a bit I went into the restaurant as it was busy and I thought that's a good sign. The staff were all very friendly, but unfortunately I found the food bland and not very authentic. I have visited different areas in Greece many times, so I have a reference point. I had a starter (tzaziki & hoummus) and main (gemista) from the pre-theatre menu, which was a reasonable price. The portion size was good, but overall very bland. The tzaziki had barely any garlic in but herbs instead which it didn't need, and houmous very dry. The gemista was swimming in a tomato sauce and served with some salad bits, that was missing olive oil. So overall disappointing I'm afraid.

Having been meaning to visit for a long time, we finally took the plunge and so glad we did! Nice relaxed atmosphere with really friendly and attentive staff. Food was delicious, we had a big fat Greek gyros and a chicken souvalaki, with some of the best halloumi fries I’ve ever had on the side which came with an amazing sweet chilli dip. Washed down with you a bottle of Mythos I felt like I was back in Greece for an hour - until we walked outside into the rain! Will definitely be a repeat visitor going forward when we need the taste of Greece!

We had a fantastic time at this restaurant. The staff were really friendly and the food was excellent. The service was very efficient but we didn’t feel rushed and there was a lovely atmosphere with a broad mix of young and old. The prices are very reasonable giving great value for money as well. We arrived here starving mid city walk having never visited Newcastle before (at 56 years old)! After being seated upstairs on a very nice window table we ordered the food. From start to finish the whole experience was very enjoyable. Food delicious with very good portions and the service/staff very friendly and low key. We really enjoyed the meal and experience here and will definitely be back.

We rang to book for an “on the day” evening reservation. It was suggested we book on line but, as we were out and about, this wasn’t an option. Apparently there were only a few slots available so it was suggested that we just call in as there would probably be plenty of opportunity for “ walk ins”. We wouldn’t have been passing without a firm reservation so we were a bit reluctant! Anyway, we did go off route and fortunately we were seated immediately. The servers were lovely, friendly and helpful. We both started with grilled halloumi, which was really tasty. One of us then had the souvlaki but the chips were cold. They were changed without fuss. The moussaka was a fairly generous portion but rather bland. We chose a glass of house wine each @ £6.50 for a medium glass, which tasted ok. We’d chosen the 2 course special @ £14.95 which was good value but, overall, an average experience.

Came here with a relative to grab a quick lunch that wouldn’t be too expensive. We sat outside and were greeted by a friendly staff member straight away and given menus. The food was served very quickly and was absolutely lovely, with very good portions considering one dish was from a discounted lunch menu. I would 100% recommend if you’re wanting some amazing Greek food.
