Los Moros in York

I was a little dubious about North African cuisine (purely my own ignorance) when my wife suggested this place. However my misgivings were misplaced. Really excellent quality food which was reasonably priced. Best meal we've had in a long time. Humus and flat breads were great. The octopus was so tender. The cassoulet nicely spiced and full of flavour. The young waitress appeared to be inexperienced but she was very pleasant and provided good service. Very happy when we left and will definitely be going back.

Food was great, chicken tagine was fantastic. Service was terrible. I had to chase food and drinks many times and it is sad to say that considering that food was really good. Disappointing.

Terrific food at very reasonable prices for all budgets without any compromise on the quality. I'd happily eat the same meal for a week before I'd look to change, it's that good😁

Wow the food here was amazing, I was expecting good but not that good, each dish we shared was just stunning, that stunning I can't pick a favourite. The chef and his staff were also brill when we came in and left, that defo added to our enjoyment of the night!

Booked here on a Friday evening and were warmly greeted at the door. The service was alright but when we asked about how much food to order for two of us to share the waitress didn't seem to have an answer. The food was quite good but was incredibly expensive for what you get. For example, we ordered the lamb "large plate" which cost £26 but consisted of 2 pieces of lamb, a mushroom, 2 sprigs of tenderstem broccoli and a couple of tiny blobs of puree. We also ordered the ox cheek large plate which was slightly better value but again the portion was not worth the price. The best part of the meal was definitely the houmous which was really smooth and tasty. A decent meal but would not return.

I had a wrap in the Shambles food market, genuinely one of the best foods I've eaten in any trip I've ever had. Delicious

Lovely place for a light lunch or great dinner. The food is fantastic and good for sharing; the servers are really friendly and the atmosphere is lovely. The outside space at the back is amazing in the summer. I will always be coming back to los moros !

My brother in law has been bringing us here for an on the hoof lunch whilst shopping for all our weekend requirements for many years and the wraps (meaty for me and veggie for the majority of our group) never fail to deliver. The food court seating is often full but the benches at the Minster are near by. Yet to try there new venue but it's on the list for next year's trip North

Really very good. Fried chicken is unbelievably tender, as is the ox cheek to the point it falls apart. Cassoulet is warning and lightly spiced. Chocolate mousse is quite rich and very flavorful. Thoroughly recommend.

cracking little gem of a place, had really excellent selection of small plates, the pil pil prawns were excellent, the Eastern fried chicken was like the classiest fried chicken I've ever eaten. the feta and spinach boureks were the crispiest little morsels. we also had the ox cheek with cumin and gouda mash which was frankly gobsmacking. topped off with a lovely bottle of red it was lovely, immaculate service and a really relaxed atmosphere. cannot recommend highly enough. also incredibly reasonably priced

We happened to pass Los Moros when browsing York’s fab streets - what a find! The restaurant looked so cosy & inviting, and the menu was small but with a good variety of great sounding dishes. So, we decided to wait the two hours (in the rain) until it opened to eat there… no small task after walking many miles around York all-day! We were so glad we did… The food was definitely the star of the show - AMAZING! It was so fresh and utterly delicious. Great flavours and clearly cooked with love! I went for a selection of the small plates, my wife and daughter both went for the Chicken tagine. The deserts were next-level. I had the Coffee & Chocolate Mousse (10/10), my wife had the Peach Melba Cigars - I’m guessing it also scored highly as she wouldn’t share it! Los Moros perfectly succeeds at combining all the ingredients necessary to make dining out a treat - it genuinely relaxing, enjoyable and memorable. Such a shame we live 4-hours away! But we all agreed we’d gladly head back one day… hopefully, sooner rather than later.

The food was amazing, the Ox cheek melted in the mouth and the Hake and Dahl was sublimely flavoured. The eastern fried chicken was the BEST fried chicken I have ever had. We shared a portion of the chocolate mouse with cardamom Meringue between two- which was perfect. It was just over £100 for starters, mains and drinks for three people and two puddings- amazing value! The service was fabulous, and the decor was spot on. Cannot recommend enough!

Half empty but incredibly slow service. Expensive and when they say small plates they mean it. The food was good and well cooked. Maybe you're paying a lot for the touristy location, but this place felt very overpriced.

The starters were ok but the octopus was a huge disappointment. It was gritty (or sandy) as if it had not been washed properly. It was also cold. When I told the staff they were uninterested. Honestly, that made my experience even worse.

We were out for my son's 19th Birthday. I'd called to book ahead the week before and had asked if there was something special they could do for my son's birthday. The reply was a bit vague but mentioned something about providing a dessert. We turned up and as we walked through the door someone shouted "Hi" but it wasn't the two girls at the reception area and we had no idea who had.We had no greeting from reception and so we stood for a while waiting to be addressed. We were then asked if we had a booking. No welcome at all and all very mechanical. One girl literally walked to a table and pointed at it and then at some tatty piece of paper on the table which turned out to be a special dish. I nearly walked out there and then! Shocking customer service. No one said anything to us until I asked for some water. We then got some drinks and we ordered. I asked about one of the dishes and the waitress couldn't describe what it was. She described what the shape was.Clearly she knew nothing about the menu. Staff did not seem happy at all. No one smiling or engaging with us. It felt flat. The food was nice however but it is expensive. The fact that it was a birthday had been totally forgotten about. We spent alot on food and drinks and did not leave a tip due to poor service. We decided not to have a dessert and went elsewhere for this. Such a shame as we had been looking forward to it.The food is cooked with care but unfortunately the staff let this place down. This is probably down to lack of experience and training. We will not be returning for that reason.

You can enjoy creative and delicious Moroccan food in the heart of York City. Los Moros is a small restaurant offering a great selection of Levantine dishes with a modern touch. Don't miss the baked hake, chicken tagline or the grilled octopus. And not to mention the colorful desert of fingers with pomegranate, peach reduction and cream foam. Prices are reasonable for the quality you get.

Cosy restaurant with exquisite dishes. Every dish was perfectly cooked and prepared with love, from the hummus and flatbreads through to the Eastern fried chicken and shakshuka. The beef tanjia, in particular, was succulent and bursting with flavour. The gentle warming spice and subtlety of the shakshuka was another highlight of the meal. Service was friendly and personable. Highly recommended!

The best dinner we've had in York, and there has been stiff competition! Lovely space out in the courtyard with heating and blankets (not that we needed them). We had basically all of the sharing plates and they were all delicious. We'll be back soon!

The atmosphere was lovely with spacious tables. We ordered hummus, fried cauliflower as starters and beef cheek tanjia and baked hake for mains. Most dishes were a bit overpriced for their portions and also the hummus and beef were seasoned with too much salt. However overall the food was nice and I especially recommend the hake:)

We shared everything and cleared all the plates;-) The special casserole with duck confit and beans was delish. Merguez so tasty, shakshuka yummy, Eastern fried chicken, borek, everything was done well. Friendly service. We will be back!!

OK but not good value for money, service OK and vegan options limited. But vegan wine was marked as vegan and staff were knowledgeable about limited options available. I won't go again.

Had a number of small plates for lunch. All were tasty flavorful and interesting. A great view and great service made this a lovely lunch. Highly recommend the muscles and the chicken small plate.

Wow !! What a fantastic place this is....we absolutely loved everything, olives and smoked almonds to nibble on.... Sardines, Eastern fried chicken and Merguez sausages for starters...Ox cheek, grilled Octopus and Lamb main courses and Peach Melba cigars and Rose cheesecake for dessert. The food here is stunning, I wish I lived in York, then I would visit weekly !! My only negative comment would be that some staff upstairs were rather slow with everything, but the food I cannot fault!

Arranged to meet a lady relative for lunch in York. As always start with a rummage on Tripadvisor then book somewhere hoping that others had enjoyed as they said. Also noted that a certain Jay Rayner had recently enjoyed Los Moria, obviously a good place, eh? Indeed so, a team who understand what they do in the kitchen and front of house. Butterflied sardines, braised ox cheek, chicken tagine all with a hint of Africa but not overpowering. Desserts of raspberry cheesecake and chocolate mousse, titles that do not give the credit this food deserved. It was outstanding and a shout out to Grace our waitress, nothing was any trouble, indeed I sensed that all the team were equally as competent and confident. Best place in York, indeed, Mr Rayner loved it, he is never wrong!!

Very nice food but the portion sizes are meagre considering how expensive it is. I don't think 2 pieces of lamb, three florets of tenderstem brocoli and half a mushroom constitutes a "large dish".

Probably my favourite restaurant in York with delicious food and great service. The menu changes often which is great and the people are very friendly. I can’t recommend this place enough!!

A lovely hidden gem in the busy city of York! V pretty & modern interior and friendly service. The food were delicious & well presented!

This evening we had one of our very best meals here - shared cauliflower and hummus (the cauliflower was unlike anything I have had- fried and topped with pomegranate molasses. Absolutely delicious!!) My partner had ox cheeks which came with a really tasty cheesy mash, and I had the aubergine topped with spicy chickpeas. Then we shared the rose and raspberry cheesecake and left very full and happy!! Such a great place- not our first visit and certainly not our last.

Cute place, menu is small but in a good sense that it helps you to choose easier. Recommend the aubergine boat! A bit disappointed on the drinks options though… Desserts are ok, the rose cheesecake is pretty.

I've eaten many times from the Los Moros market stall and the restaurant too in years gone by. Always good but the lunch today was absolutely superb and the menu surprised me. I had stuffed quail and my companion the beef cheeks (see photo). Will be returning again soon. Oh and the espresso was excellent also.

Worked as chef,the owner had not cheffing back ground,dectator no respect for his staff,always looking for staff cause no one can cope with his attitude.

We were visiting York and picked Los Moros as the menu was different from the usual. The Los Moros menu is small, but with enough options to satisfy most. We were seated downstairs although I think there is much more capacity upstairs and in a covered garden area. Our food was good although I do think my starter of king prawns, 3 for £10.50 a bit on the high side. As mains my wife had the hake which she really enjoyed and I had the ox cheeks which was really tasty and tender. None of the dishes came with much in the way of vegetables. Service was professional and the atmosphere in the small downstairs area good.

Bit disappointed after many good visits in the past. The North African vibe seems to have been reduced with the introduction of Haxby bakery sourdough bread and things like mussels on toast. The range of dips has been reduced to hummous, the falafel has gone and the menu now seems to have lost its identity a bit. The food we had was nice, but slightly lacking in flavour and spices and the choice was much more limited that before. I’ve nothing against Haxby sourdough but didn’t expect it instead of flatbread in a North African establishment. Hopefully it will find its identify again and I look forward (as a local) to returning when it does.

What a find! The food was superb, the ambience excellent and the staff very pleasant. We had the best prawns we've ever eaten anywhere. All the dishes were really delicious and excellent value.

They have a pop-up store in Shambles market and this place is a really good option if you are looking out for wraps. We tried Rose Harissa Chicken Wrap which was delectable and a lovely choice for a happy tummy.

Lovely meal out in York. Pretty location and attractive decor inside. The atmosphere is intimate and warm and the service was attentive and friendly. The food was delicious, we definitely over ordered but still finished everything and enjoyed every bite!

I came here with my boyfriend for valentines dinner, and we couldn't have asked for a better experience. The restaurant was cosy and the staff and guests were all extremely welcoming. The drinks were lovely and the food looked and tasted brilliant. I would definitely recommend Los Moros to anyone looking for a romantic meal in York, as well as food in general. We will certainly be coming back!

Food mainly lovely from the choices we selected. The menu was limited but thats sometimes a good thing. It often allows for expertise on the menu. The food was fresh and cooked to order. I wouldn't personally take children there, well not ones that have a pallet limited to fast foods. On the whole very tasty with reservation on the chicken tagine. The chicken was tender and tasty but the rest if it I believed gave me the impression it was cooked separately and the potatoes were hard and white in the centre. The king prawns were tasty To end on a positive note. I would visit again. The staff were lovely and the atmosphere was exceptional, made even better by the company of good friends.

We loved everything about the food, the service was good. The wine is a little more expensive. The only issue on a freezing evening was going outside to use the bathroom!

Amazing! Reviewing before we leave. Meal for 2. Ended up with 7 small plates and 2 large worth every penny! Highly recommend!!!! Highlight for my immie was courgette. Me? Between The Hake, hummus, courgette of prawns lol. Flat breads were awesome too.

I’ve been eating here for 4-5 years now and it’s my favourite independent place to eat in York. The flavour of the food is great with such unique dishes. On my last two visits the lamb shank has drastically changed. It’s now just three chewy pieces of lamb with a smear of mash, the mash was typically amazing and a great, albeit, still small portion but now it’s just a drizzle. The whipped feta has been removed from the menu so we opted for the lamb sausages and king prawns - we received three of each. I ordered the quail which, expectedly, was small. However, it just sat on a purée with no carbs of any kind. Both of us left feeling extremely hungry after a starter and main each. I’m not sure whether it’s the cost of living or changes in supplier but the quantity has become such an issue I can’t justify the cost of going back now. It’s a real shame. 2 alcoholic drinks added to the above foods and the bill was £80. I shouldn’t be leaving a restaurant feeling like I haven’t eaten at that price.

Second time we have visited York and second time we have been to Los Moros. Excellent, genuine food done to a great standard. Staff are incredibly friendly and helpful. Really hope we get to come for a third time. Thank you so much.

Really excellent food, highly recommend it! It's not huge so you should always try should book (which is quite difficult because there's no online booking and they're too busy to answer the phone!).

I enjoyed it but very slow service and plates did not come at the same time...

I had Baked hake here. It was super delicious. The combination of the simple taste of hake and deep, flavorful mashed beans was terrific. I didn't expect it. Perfect. Will try small plates next time.

Brilliant food. Very professional staff and exceptional service. The food is seasoned and cooked to perfection, nothing could be faulted. Portion sizes are perfect, leaving space for dessert which are beautiful. The atmosphere carefully curated, loved the attention to detail. Seriously the best restaurant I’ve been to in the UK. DO NOT MISS AN OPPORTUNITY TO EAT HERE!!

I’ve previously eaten at Los Moros’ street food stand in the market which is excellent, I love their Merguez sausage wraps. My experience with their street food was what led us to their main restaurant and we were not disappointed. The atmosphere of the restaurant is lively, and the decor is very on brand with beautiful tiles adorning the walls and floors. All of us had starters and mains - between us we had hummus, sardine balls, za’atar chicken, feta parcels, tagine, shakshuka, ox cheek, and hake… so a fair selection of the menu; not a morsel was left, everything was delicious and very high quality! Their Pale Ale is also very good if you’re into your craft beers. Pricing is fair IMHO, the majority of starters cost less than £10, with mains ranging between £14 and £25. The staff are all very friendly and helpful too. We will definitely be coming back for more, I can’t recommend Los Moros enough!

Talk about some really incredible flavors!! We enjoyed a really nice meal accompanied by fantastic service by Tegan! Three of us ordered: We started with hummus, fried chicken and king prawn starters. The fried chicken was off the wall bonkers crazy good! Super moist chicken with bold flavors! The hummus had za’tar seasoning, spicy seasoning and a third spice! All with olive oil in the center. And the king prawns were in a garlic oil! Absolutely delish starters! We then had chicken Tagine and the Eggplant bowl! The eggplant had a nice kick to the chickpea mixture and a wonderful cooling yogurt drizzle! The chicken was exceptionally moist and served with large potatoes and olives! We most definitely had enough food for three! Possibly too much- we left stuffed! But we LOVED it!!!

Not cheap but you get what you pay for. Lovely small plates, the chicken being perhaps the stand out from what we ordered. Bonus points for offering the entire list of (still) wines by the glass.

Cozy place with North African influence, tasty food with lots of great spices. Totally recommend the chicken with potatoes from the mains, the aubergine flatbreads from the starters and the haddock croquettes. For dessert, we took the chocolate-coffee mouse - it was fantastic!

Referring to the street food unit in the Shambles Market - absolutely delicious food! It was Tuesday lunch time and we managed to find seats easily, although we could have eaten and walked as it was well packaged. Will definitely visit again

The food was absolutely top quality stuff. The lamb was worth the little extra wait time, and they give you just the right amount of food to satisfy without feeling bloated. They were able to seat us without a reservation, the staff were friendly and informative, we never felt ignored nor pestered. The toilets were a little bit of a journey from our upstairs table, but they were clean and had nice hand wash available so cannot complain too much.

Been here a few times. Amazing food!! Always get ZFC chicken as a starter and beef tanjia as a main.

Chilled atmosphere. Turned up high and with a Labrador at 9pm on a Friday. Place was packed, but they accommodated us and we had a fantastic evening. A gem!

Lovely staff, fast service and delicious food, we had 6 small plates shared between 2 of us and this was perfect. Found the resturant as it was advertised for York resturant week, glad we found this place!

Really well made, delicious dishes, friendly efficient service and a great location. Tip: Ask to sit in the courtyard, so cosy in the cold weather.

Very good menu choices at reasonable prices. We shared dishes. We especially enjoyed the ox cheeks dish and the haddock croquettes starter but everything we ordered was very good. Try the Los Moros american pale ale, really enjoyed this. Staff are very friendly and helpful. There are additional tables upstairs.

Let me start by saying the food was absolutely delish. If I was just reviewing the food this would be a 4* rating. Unfortunately the service let this restaurant down considerably. Today we went to Los Moros for what we hoped would be a romantic meal for our 9th anniversary. We don't have wads of cash so this was a special treat for us. What let Los Moros down was that their control of other guests. The table next to us was incredibly loud. When we were directed to the table close to them we were fine with that because they'd obviously finished their meal some time ago and were due to leave imminently. Except they didn't leave for our ENTIRE MEAL. They stayed for over an hour drinking tap water and screaming/talking purposely loudly, overpowering the small room so much so that I coudln't even hear myself think. I found myself wolfing down my food just so that I could escape them. To me, a good level of service would have been to recognise how negatively this table was effecting the other retaurant guests and politely tell them that the restaurant needed the table for other guests. Instead they kept feeding them free tap water and letting them ruin the experience for everyone else. I'm not blaming the obnoxious, loud, entitled guests at the other table. I blame the service for not managing this situation.

We arrived at 6pm without a reservation but were lucky to get an outside table in their delightful patio. We had starters, main corse and dessert. All were delicious but the cheesecake was outstanding - from the presentation to the taste, just mouthwatering! We had hummus, nuts and salad as shared starters and then the caselet and slow cook ox for mains as stated previously, all were delicious. My husband chose the almond pudding as his dessert (probably because he didn't want to share with me and I don't like almond cake) but I was in dessert heaven with the cheesecake! We had a lovely waiter. A pitcher of water was given as soon as we arrived. Another review mentioned the frequent changes of napkins - this happened with us but as we we eating with our fingers during the starter we we were grateful for fresh serviettes. However, I would agree about the plates being taken when others were still eating. Having waitress experience I was always instructed not to do this. But in general the service was great.

Average and expensive. Haddock croquettes good as was the side salad. Olives over priced for about 5 olives Chicken supreme over priced and tasted of not a lot. Boring. Desserts were okay. Drinks expensive

Turned up at 12:30pm on a Saturday from Nottingham to come here but it was closed for no obvious reason. Google says open, the sign on the door says it should be open, there’s a sign on the door saying closed in aug for annual leave but no reason for it to be closed now in July. Very disappointed
