An excellent visit, shown a lovely warm welcome by a young lady who was knowledgeable and enthusiastic. Offered tastings of the various, excellent products. This is a wonderful place for top quality smoked salmon and other smoked product. Incredible that Mr Marr does it all himself, fishing/catching and then curing/smoking. We had experienced Marrbury smoked salmon at the fabulous Gleneagles Hotel so when in the local area, a stop-off was a must. Delighted we did!

Staying in Kirkcudbright and stopped here whilst on a drive out! Mostly self service (no hot food) hubby had a sandwich and I had a ploughman’s platter (from the fridge) - very fresh and tasty. Hot drinks from a machine - very easy to use! The lady behind the counter was lovely, very polite and chatty. If your in the area you should drop in!

Just called in for a coffee stop and sandwiches - it’s a funny old place. Looked nice from the outside but sadly lacking in customer service. My husband asked if he could use the toilet and get a tea and the lady looked at him like he’d landed from Mars. He was told he’d have to scan in, which he duly did. The lady then checked with him if he’d scanned the QR code, which he confirmed he had, she then asked her colleague “did you see him”?! There was only one kids sandwich meal left and when my husband enquired if there was another - the lady abruptly said she’d made 8 that morning and they’d run out of bed so she wasn’t making any more - this was 11:45am! Other customers were walking away disappointed too. Had to make your own tea and coffee and clear up after yourself. Lots of wasps in the garden. No friendly greeting but my dog did get a biscuit and the sandwiches were nice! Shame…..not the friendliest arrival in to Scotland.

We came across this intriguing little coffee shop and gallery while touring in Galloway. Hannah gave us a warm welcome and helped us choose from the selection of handmade cakes. They were yummy and the coffee was good! She also told us all about the original artworks displayed in the gallery. Fascinating. We then noticed the smoked cheeses and fish and were treated to a free tasting. Wow. They were all delicious so we bought several different smoked cheeses and two kinds of smoked salmon. My favourite was the hot smoked salmon. Hannah packed them with freezer packs for us at no charge. We noticed lots of locals just dropping in as they passed to pick up some lunch which is a sure sign that this little shop is consistently good and not just for tourists. We shall be back next time we are in the area.

Visited the shop while staying at Creetown. The lady behind the counter was very very helpful and expertly guided us through the various products available. We settled on a couple of varieties of smoked salmon and some soups. These she kindly packaged and stored for us to be collected a few days later. Apart from the excellent and courteous service the tastiness of the products purchased was top notch.

We visited whilst staying locally and was really glad we did! The lady who served us was friendly and helpful and the cheese is amazing! so good we went back for more the next day so we could take some home! Got coffee and hot chocolate and sat outside with our dog and even she got offered a biscuit! To top this the owner offered to drop off any orders we wanted as he "went past us" on route to Gleneagles on a regular basis so wouldn't charge delivery!! Great place, we will visit again!

We stopped here after a good walk at MossYard beach to get a snack (after reading on here how good the sarnies are!) and the reviews are absolutely spot on. Husband and I both agree - best sandwiches we’ve ever had. (Smokey chicken Mayo and Smokey cheese). I actually struggled to finish the second half, which my husband happily obliged lol. It’s a little place, but perfectly positioned. The lady in there was lovely and friendly :) - and the artwork stunning. Will definitely be back. (To those commenting on the price of food - yes they’re more than what you pay in Tesco but flippin’ eck no comparison in the quality!)

We love places like this, and as a country Scotland doesn't have enough of these retail venues. The Lady who looked after us was full of enthusiasm and genuine in her comments. And yes, their famous smoked salmon is extremely good. The texture (hate this 'mouth feel' chat) is devine. As an added extra there is a lovely ruin to look at and their covid measures are up there too.

Visited twice, once in glorious sun and the other in torrential rain. Sandwiches were really yummy, the smoked chicken and sweetcorn mayo was amazing. The tasters were good and we came away with plenty to take home plus some lovely and unique art too. Coffee is the only let down (from a machine) and sad not to have chance to try an ice cream but the rocky road was good. If you're in the area stop by and try it, if it's sunny the courtyard is a wee sun trap too ...the lady serving was lovely, friendly and helpful

My wife, and I have waxed lyrical for years about the best smoked salmon in Scotland we have tasted being served at Gleneagles Hotel in Auchterarder. Whilst in Southern Dumfries & Galloway on holiday we were delighted to find out that this is supplied by Marrbury. We decided to visit, and were not disappointed. We were greeted by a friendly, and very knowledgable staff member who offered us tasting samples of their delicious produce which included a variety of smoked fish, and cheeses. Smoked meats and a variety of chutneys etc were also on sale. The produce sold here simply represents the best of Scottish produce. As well as buying some of their fabulous smoked salmon we noted that they also do mail order.Whilst at the shop we decided to have a coffee , and sandwich from the bistro. We sat outside as we had our spaniel ( water bowls provided ) but there is inside seating. The hot smoked salmon sandwich with tarragon mayo was fantastic. The cost of the coffee and sandwiches was spot on for the quality provided. I have no hesitation in recommending Marrbury, and it’s fantastic produce.

From the outside there's nothing not to like, straight off the A75, near the estuary, smokehouse, art gallery and castle ruins, however..A sign on the door talks about becoming ECO with self service and composting cups, being a bit of an eco-warrier I was sold, however..being charged £2.75 for using a machine to serve yourself tea into a paper (compostable) cup is a bit much, choice of cow's milk or no milk, so much for being eco (Scotland is the home of oats!).What is wrong with the traditional and much more eco practice of using a mug then washing it up?Add to that some overpriced artwork and nick-nacks, left me feeling like I'd had my pocket picked in London, I hope this is not a trend for this area!

Owners are obviously following their instinct , and trying to be different, and must be commended for doing so, visited back in June, on way back from Mull of Galloway, just wasnt for me , rare I would leave half a sandwich, but just to smokey/salty tasting , I thought it was expensive , I have read through some reviews, and I guess its one of those you do really like, or really do not like , sometimes its just nice to find a decent cafe , but full credit for trying to be different , it was very clean, one nice chap sitting in the garden reading, another couple came for a more traditional cafe stop , looked at menu and left ,

So you are looking for somewhere for a cup of tea on the A75 having come off the ferry at Cairnryan and you find the Marrbury Smokehouse Cafe on your right looking very inviting. Don't bother! The price for a cup of tea is £2.75 which in the right surroundings with good service you might say is OK. But wait a minute ... This is self service. Yes! We were handed two tea bags, shown the fridge where the milk was kept, and told to use the paper cups at the machine which dispensed hot water (as well as latte capuccino americano or whatever at the press if a button). You get the idea. A nice piece of brownie? Well it should be and it was for £2.50 but served in a paper bag - no plate. Somewhere to sit? Just two regular and rather uncomfortable small chairs at a table reserved "strictly" for OAPs and handicapped. All the rest were bar stool height. In short, uncomfortable, overpriced, lacking in ambience and with no service whatsoever.

So I had a Smoked Salmon and Lime dressing sandwich. Actually it was pretty good and the coffee from the machine was good too, so I was pleasantly surprised. After lunch I explored the castle ruins at the same site, which I enjoyed - so all in all it was a good break stop. Your server was very nice - professional, friendly and helpful. We loved that menu showed off lots of the smokehouse’s finest! If we had a car fridge we definitely would have bought some goodies!

Marrbury Smokehouse is een kleine eetgelegenheid bij Carsluith, langs de weg naar Dumfries. Er is een kleine kasteelruine, die niet spectaculair is.

Passed this place many a time but made a decision today to stop - I was not disappointed. Lovely hot choc and tray bake served by a team of lovely staff. Will definitely call past next time again. Good to stretch the legs climbing up the castle steps with panoramic views to the Solway Firth. First class all round.

Went here for lunch and had the haggis supper. It was delicious. A few items on the menu were not available that day but what we had didn’t disappoint. Will definitely go back next time we visit the area.

Small restaurant with big taste! We had lunch one day and snack another, and they didn't disappoint. The smoked fish is amazing... you can really taste the smoke. We had the fish bun which was loaded with salmon and trout... so much fish that we couldn't eat the bun! Had to buy some fish to take with us! Excellent friendly service as well. Only complaint is that restaurant was very hot.

Coffee is freshly brewed and served in large mugs. Cakes and scones looked delicious. We bought some smoked salmon which just melted in your mouth. We looked around the castle which is on the same site and belongs to Historic Scotland (no entrance fee). It was good to pop in here, staff were friendly and helpful.

My second review of this establishment, for which I do not apologise. Having discovered it it in 2013 & being mightily pleased then, I have made a point of revisiting whenever I'm able on the 3 or 4 times a year I'm passing by.I have to say that on every occasion I've both looked forward to it & have never been disappointed - far from it. The food, service & ambiance are wonderful, the staff equally so - friendly, accommodating, personable - & all the time without being overly intrusive. Just a periodic check that all is OK - & it always is!Last Wednesday's brioche fish bun was sublime, as was yesterday's smoked Stilton burger (ok, I needed a comfort hit after 3 days rough camping!)I repeat, you've got this just right, & I genuinely wish you every success for many years to come.Oh, & for the cynical out there, I have no connection whatsoever with this business, other than as a very happy punter ;-)

Can't fault this establishment and the Castle is a bonus. Salmon pate was out of this world. Gorgeous Fish and Chips. Very welcoming and helpful staff. Lovely atmosphere. Nothing was too much trouble. A fabulous end to our Scottish holiday. Will definitely be ordering some mail order food. Just one very small disappointment, that we could not take away any of the Salmon pate. But we will be back xx

Passed this place lots of times over the years & never had the chance to visit before. Really excited to finally arrive, see the castle & take in the stunning views! Such a shame that the cafe didn't live up to expectations. All little things & it was just afternoon tea but they all add up & not sure you could get it so wrong! coffee was from a filter machine - ok but it was too strong & tasted stewed, they said it had only just been brewed, so I asked for a tea to exchange. They said they could make me an Americano from their machine (which I couldn't see anywhere but gave them the benefit of doubt) I'm convinced it came back watered down filter & in a dirty cup! Undrinkable. Tea for 3 = one small teapot with 1 teabag - we complained again... 'honest mistake' Scones were dry & lacking in sugar. Ice cream from the Lake District? come on - it's less than 4 miles from the cream of Galloway! Really disappointed & wont be going back for refreshments again . It's such a good idea, the castle is fab & it should be packed out this time of year. They just need to up their game!

This is a smallish diner, in the grounds of an ancient castle, also selling smoked food, predominantly fish though also poultry and various of their own sauces. The food was top quality, and the service from all members of staff was exceptional. It's in a good location right on the A75, and easy to access from the main road.

As stated, this was our second visit. It is a very nice environment but, on both occasions, I have been underwhelmed. Firstly, by the special fish and chips (salmon too salty) and today the cod. The quality of the cod was poor. It was overpriced and small.Clearly, other reviewers are happy judging by the comments. For my family and I, we won't be visiting again the next time we're in the area.

On our way to Cairnryan ferry port we stopped for a quick lunch. However, it turned out to be not very quick because it was busy and the kitchen was under pressure. We waited nearly 30 minutes for a simple meal. Staff were helpful and friendly, apologising for the delay. Great place, great food but they could improve by expanding the kitchen capacity and consequently the number of customers they could cope with.

Lovely little family run smokehouse. They offer a very interesting menu for lunch. We had thai smoked salmon panini with sweet chilli chutney (lovely but perhaps a few too many flavours going on) and smoked salmon pate with oatcakes. Sharing these two between us however worked well. The lady waiting on tables was very pleasant. There were lots of interesting smokehouse products..meat fish cheese etc to buy and take away and its obvious the owners take huge pride in their products and processes. The shop, kitchen area seem quite crowded and could be a little better organised...think space is an issue. Before leaving we explored carluith castle which wss quite small but well preserved..a fabulous view out to sea.I would be happy to return..and buy some produce to take away next time

Lovely location with inside and outside seating areas. Menu is limited to some extent. The salmon fish supper is very tasty and worth the price. Prices of seafood to take away and cook yourself are high when compared to the smokehouse just along the road a couple of miles. Well worth a visit though particularly if you are staying at the nearby excellent Auchenlarie Holiday Park.

This cafe serves a great range of cakes but their uniqueness lies in the range of smoked products. Absolutely delicious!! These can also be purchased. The staff are exceptionally friendly and have a good knowledge of the " smoking" process. There is indoor and outdoor seating and these are impeccabley clean and tidy. Would definately return

Stopped in on the way back from Portpatrick and were delighted at the wide range of fish and game on offer. Both of us opted for the crab salad (which we'd been unable to have elsewhere) and weren't disappointed. The crab was delicious and the salad was good too.We stay in Dumfries and are now trying to plan trips to the west of the region just so we can go here for a meal and work our way through the menu.

Restaurant review: have heard good things about the Galloway Arms so decided to take my family for dinner on a Sunday afternoon. Whilst I enjoyed my choice of venison, my husband found his steak over cooked tasteless and inedible. We complained and sent the plate back. The courteous and polite waiting staff initially offered another choice which my husband declined having lost his appetite. To our surprise the steak remained on our bill when it came. I challenged this, explaining we were unhappy with the meal and therefore unhappy to pay. The waitress told us she would tell the chef but swiftly returned to say the chef had tasted the steak and decided there was 'nothing wrong with it' and refused to waive the cost. I then offered to pay half the cost which again was refused with the message that the chef was 'unwilling to budge' adamant that there was no fault to the steak aside from (clearly) my husbands palate. I didn't push the point as I did not want to cause a scene in front of my children but I was disgusted by the manner in which our complaint was handled. Considering we were the only table in the restaurant it is surprising that the chef did not attempt to discuss this with us in person. The message 'the customer is always right' clearly does not resonate with the chef of this establishment and we will not be back. A shame for the lovely waiting staff who appeared quite embarrassed by the whole situation.
