Busy but we did get a table. It's not their fault that they are busy on a Saturday afternoon. Excellent friendly service. Very nice atmosphere. The owner supplied a hot water for someone sitting outside. NOW THAT IS SERVICE.

Great little cafe, very popular with cyclists. The food is good (vegetarian) and the coffee is excellent. The cafe is always busy but people move on fairly quickly. The waffles are a highlight. Also the fully loaded porridge!

The cafe is very small so there isn’t much chance of getting a seat inside therefore you need to sit at the tables outside. These tables are often full with extra people at each and are in the middle of a busy pavement. This makes it very difficult for people passing with prams or other dogs. They often have to go right round almost onto the road and in some cases onto the road. As it is on the corner people come round it with their dog not knowing there is a dog right around the corner. This pavement was extended by the council for safety reasons as the junction there was very difficult to get out of due to oncoming traffic and it was difficult to see what was coming hence the pavement extension. Now the cafe have made use of this “safety extension” by using it as their own personal outdoor seating area which has now made a dangerous junction even worse. It is impossible to see what traffic is coming down Peebles Road due to hoards of people outside the cafe making the councils work pointless. It is a pavement not a space for No 1’s personal outdoor seating area.

Lovely cafe, perfect for coffee before cycling to Edinburgh (day 4 of Sustrans Coast and Castles route). We had a cheese and blueberry scone, both lovely. The wraps we took away were foil wrapped and still warm in Middleton, where we stopped for lunch. Very generous ingredients, bean wrap and falafel wrap. Enjoyed immensely. Thank you

This is a must stop on your travels, whether you're a local or a visitor - all are welcome. From the minute you step in, you're greeted with a warm hello from the kitchen. The atmosphere is cosy, especially when the fire is lit. You can feel the excitement of the riders getting ready for their big ride, the dog walkers who know everyone, or the friends catching up for coffee. The food is absolutely amazing, best raspberry scone I've ever had with lashings of butter and jam. Thanks to Craig and Anna and the rest of the amazing staff. Special thank you to the Birthday candle, song and yummy scone. Kind regards. Lynette (Sydney Australia)

Popped in here on a Thursday afternoon & the place was very busy, with what appeared to be large groups of peoples. The Cafe is set up well for large groups with 2 huge tables, although not much room for couples. We did however manage to get a seat when somebody else vacated a window table. I ordered & paid at the counter & the drinks came fairly quickly. Turned out one of the items I had ordered was no longer available & we chose an alternative. The sandwich (ham & brie) I ordered was yummy & the price was acceptable. It did however seem a bit manic in the Cafe & at one point the waitress was sweeping up around us (not great when eating) & then left the pile of dust/crumbs in front of the door! I think it would be a great place to go with a crowd & the selection of food on offer is good. However, not ideal for couples looking for a relaxing lunch.

Stoped in Innerleithen for lunch and from a very long distance could see crowds of people around this little cafe. It appeared there is not a coincidence that No 1 Peebles Road Cafe brings so much attention, especially amongst cyclists. Food and coffee are outstanding. Service is very nice and helpful, and timing was not issue for me as had not been in a hurry. However, these who want food to come quickly to their tables might moan about timing. No 1 Surprise sandwich is an absolute winner for me, but I reckon everyone would find something to eat regardless dietary requirements. I would definitely be back up there.

As a mtb'er I've heard allsorts of positive reviews from others on this place. We came in the low season and it was closed, so we decided to pay a visit next time round. I was quite disappointed really. We were to be fair acknowledged quickly upon arrival and given the menus. The drinks arrived promptly and my flat white was one of the best I've had. We ordered food but there was no mention of a long wait. There seemed to be enough staff to cope with the amount of Customers but maybe our substandard experience was due to lack of organization and not being switched on. I'd finished my coffee and after half an hour of being there, started to wonder where the food was. There were no other customers that appeared to be ordering food, just drinks. It was almost 40 mins when the food arrived.. for some poached eggs, tomatoes, avocado, spinach and mushrooms I would not expect for it to take this long. The lady did apologize for our wait however it would have been nice to be told at the start that there was going to be a wait so our expectations would have been set, and we would have been absolutely fine with this. I wouldnt reccommend coming here if you want a quick bite to eat. The food was nice enough, if a little pricey.. it was just breakfast we had so not a huge amount of skill involved in cooking. There was some slight confusion over the bill at the end with a higher price being issued by the lady who served us the food.. which seemed a little bit lax. I noticed whilst paying the cakes in the cupboard were not covered and a fly was crawling over the scones. Overall impression, not great.. service needs a definite fine tuning.. but obviously a popular stop by to mtb'ers.

The outdoor seating area is perfect for people-watching, too. I was a bit surpised on one occasion that there was no decaf available (for those of us who love coffee but can't risk taking in caffeine after a certain time). Really good (strong) coffee, and we also had good tea and banana bread. They made my mocha with oat milk, no problem -so there are vegan drinks, though I didn't ask about food. The savoury food looked delicious and substantial. Friendly and very nicely laid out place. Will most certainly go there again, and am happy to have found it... I visited No.1 Peebles Road during the first week of June. Me and my partner ordered coffee and lunch, I will first say that the coffee was lovely and it was very pleasant to sit outside at the cafe on a sunny day. However, things just started to go downhill after finishing our coffee. Initially we ordered one bagel and one sweet potato, I was informed about 5 mins later that they no longer had sweet potatos. (note, no apology) I decided instead to opt for a salmon and cream cheese bagel. We had our coffees and waited for our food, and waited...and waited. In fact we waited over 40 minutes for 2 bagels, not one member of staff came over to inform us that there was a delay, or to let us know how long we might have to wait. After enquiring about 30 minutes into our wait we were told our bagels were being plated, it did however take another 10 minutes to arrive. Once our food was served the waitress did not apologise for the long wait, which really did annoy me. The bagel was fine and what I would expect from a café, I just didn't understand how it could possibly take 40mins to prepare, even during a busy spell, especially since there seemed to be around 4-5 members of staff and about 12 covers while we were there. The main reason I am writing this review though is because of the sign in the toilet. On the inside of the toilet is a notice which states you will have to wait 40 minutes during busy spells for your food, and rather rudely asks "are you in a rush?" and gives a yes or no options, no leading to "..the wait will be 30-40mins" While I completely understand how stressful it can be to work in busy atmospheres (believe meI have been there), I just don't think this is the right approach. Why not speak to your customers and interact with them, as I found that the sign in your toilet comes off as a bit of an excuse and way to justify the long wait without having to confront people. Perhaps if one member of staff had approached us to say sorry for the wait or had let us know about 15 mins into our wait that there was going to be bit of a delay then I would not be writing this review, but here I am. Anyway, there isn't much else around so I am sure they do very well, but personally I just think the wait for food and lack of customer service really lets down what could have been a great experience. Also I don't often leave negative/average feedback and I like to be constructive, I just hope if I visit again things might be better.

I've visited No.1 for coffee and food many times. The coffee is unparalleled.Food is prepared with love, generously proportioned and there are plenty of nutritious options. My favourites are the breakfast mess and the sweet baked potatoes. All dishes are available gluten free. Friends with other dietary requirements have been readily accommodated - spontaneously created dishes on more than one occasion!Everyone is greeted with a warm welcome and regulars aren't shy to have a yarn.I'll be back :-)

I certainly appreciate that 'food is prepared fresh and to order' and am ok with waiting half an hour or so - no problem. However, an elderly gentleman who joined us at our table was treated shabbily. Agreed he was slightly deaf and therefore spoke a little louder but he did not deserve the response he received from a large fellow who was involved in the food preparation. After 40 minutes or so the customer politely enquired to the waitress how long would his soup be. At some distance and in a loud and aggressive voice the man behind the counter shouted loudly across the room that 'food preparation was fresh etc.....' . He then followed up this tirade by walking across the room and sitting down aggressively next to the elderly chap and continued his irrational and loud speech. I interrupted him to say that the elderly chap who was clearly humiliated and embarrassed had shown nothing but good manners. A while later his (lukewarm soup) was placed somewhat firmly next to him - without a word except thank you from the customer. I did not know this man at all but I do recognise good manners. For the first time in a long dining out lifetime I did not leave a tip and I will certainly not want to go there again.

Stopped here after a ride at Innerleithen mainly because it was the first café we came across and what a pleasant stop it was. Super friendly staff, huge portions and extremely tasty food. I had a ham, brie and chutney toastie and it was bloody lovely. People around me were raving about the milkshakes too. Will definitely stop again next time I'm in the area.

Needed some food after a ride at Innerleithen. Excellent friendly service, good coffee, and one of the best sandwiches I've ever had (Haloumi and chorizo). Everyone else in our group raved about whatever they had as well.

Stopped off for a light lunch whilst visiting a National Trust property nearby. Great cafe atmosphere, nice mixture of customers, very good coffee and excellent selection of sandwiches and light meals. It was very busy as you wood expect from a popular property. Service was polite, prompt and food quality was very good, fresh ingredients and you could tell put together with quality in mind. The place was a bit chaotic mainly due to being so busy but a different set up of the inside tables would afford more space, more seats, means more business? Outside seating was also available, once again a few more seats wouldn't go a miss. All in we will certainly return and recommend to others if they are in the area.

I've stopped here twice on rides from Portobello, once on a group ride with Portovelo and again yesterday on a solo ride. Friendly, helpful staff, good food and coffee, and very helpful local route advice yesterday which helped me stay clear of busy traffic. Highly recommended!

Went here after a morning at Glentress. Friendly, easy atmosphere. Coffee was great but the salad (puy lentil and halloumi, etc.) I ordered was, honestly, the tastiest I've ever had - so much so I had to buy the ingredients on the way home and replicate it for my tea last night! The rest of the family enjoyed their lunch, too: soup, bagel, sandwich, etc. My son had a piece of spectacular looking rocky road cake which had actual Rolos on it - "yum". We'll definitely be back.

We arrived at the cafe after having cycled on the Capital Trail via the Three Maidens and the Southern Upland Way. On the tops we experienced a snow storm. The warm cafe was very welcoming - in fact it was packed with road cyclists - many of them had taken off their outer wear and were wrapped in blankets provded by the cafe. The staff were also handing out hot water bottles for the coldest cyclists to hug!

What a little gem this is, the food was so gorgeous, the staff were so accommodating, friendly and helpful even offering hot water bottles and blankets if we wanted to sit outside. There are games to play whilst you wait for your freshly prepared food, prepared in front of your eyes in the main room.Lovely relaxed friendly cafe, next time we are in Scotland we will be back...shame you are not open at night!
