We had heard a lot about Norse, good and less so and my view is that it depends on what you want/were expecting. The restaurant is simple and laid back, the food unusual and, for me, spectacular. Portions were fine, probably have a slice or 2 of the lovely bread if you are hungry but the quality and flavour of the dishes were amazing. Relatively inexpensive for the quality of the food@ c£40per head including wine. I loved it. Give it a try, it is certainly different (for Harrogate).

Wanting to visit this place for a while and so pleased we finally did. Stunning plates of food, great combinations of textures, novel flavours, playful plating and excellent service too. The place, has, it! It really does. Lovely ambience, attentive but not intrusive staff, cool decor and very tasteful table laying (you know what I mean). Not to mention a moss wall! Who doesn’t like that. We definitely be back, as should all the foodies of Yorkshire and beyond. And we’ll be bringing friends too. By far one of the best vegetarian meals I’ve ever eaten, and not simply the same as the main course (but no meat). A triumph. Harrogate’s version of Skosh, is the only thing I can compare it to. You must eat here! Good price too, £50 each for 4 courses and drinks and sides and extras.

My partner and I have been wondering about trying Norse, after reading some good reviews and some good word-of-mouth recommendations, so we have just been for the Early Bird menu as a birthday treat and to try the place out. What a terrific dinner we had. Not cheap, but not break-the-bank prices either. I had a mackerel starter with beetroot, pickled mussels on a dill mayo, with a whey wafer thing with a horseradish cream and it was terrific. The main was chicken, cooked beautifully with a bon-bon from the leg meat, accompanied by squash puree, turnip done like a sort-of fondant, and some other stuff that I can't remember, but was fab. Dessert was awesome. Crispy chocolate mousse, with dulce de leche cream, smoked applewood ice cream etc. Despite the high-brow feel to the food, the overall ambience is pretty laid back and unpretentious and the service very good. Can't wait to sample the Tasting Menu sometime.

We have always been big fans of Norse and have enjoyed many meals in the old restaurant. Our last visit to the new establishment was, however, disappointing. I had the pigeon which melted in the mouth followed by the cod dish which I’d read other reviews about and it exceeded my expectations as was cooked to perfection with a crispy topping and the crab side dish complimented it perfectly. My dessert was a rice pudding with frangipane and brandy snap with cherries and just writing about it makes me want to eat it again and again... I’ve always wanted to try the tasting menu at Norse and my friends bought me a voucher for my 60th birthday in October. I decided to wait until January, as a treat for a cold winter night (which it was!). My mother (whose appetite is smaller than mine) had food from the a la carte menu and the staff coordinated service well. We’ve both eaten there before but this was outstanding! As it was a “birthday meal” we had a complimentary drink when we arrived which was a good start. The food was excellent as ever - it got better as the courses went on and the trout, cod/crab and beef dishes from the tasting menu were so good I’ll have to return for more. My mother asked for sorbet as a dessert and although it wasn’t on the menu, they provided a strawberry sorbet which she really loved. All in all an excellent evening!

There is clear attention to detail when it came to glassware and plates, all which worked perfectly. The food itself was brilliant. We are quite foodies and had dined at a few restaurants in between and were nervous that it wouldn't be as good as we'd remembered but it was even better. It's great to see they now offer smaller plates as well as the tasting menu. Highlight on each visit has been the grains with the bread - don't know how they do it but they make such a simple dish taste amazing. The staff are friendly, knowledgable but not intrusive. Easy booking online, chose an early sitting for the special menu option. Nice note, they give you a time they would like the table back !Nicely located, relaxed informal setting and perfect feel when we walked in. Service suitably laid back, no hassle. Download the menu and be intrigued with the choice, lots to look at. Garlic Velouté was a taste bomb, crusty sourdough mopped up the last of it. I went for the Belly Pork, our Doris went for the Cod. Both were stunning, just enough and really interesting combinations of texture and flavour. Managed a shared dessert of apple - again, a superb blend of taste, texture and temperature. Coffee finished, just missing a little sweet morsel, you know, a biscotti or madeleine. Never mind eh !Full menu had a few extra choices, will try later on another visit.

After a hard week at work fine dining was required. We chose the tasting menu and my husband had the wine flight. I was attempting dry January. The food was inspiring and each course had a wow factor. My particular favourites were the comfit duck with miso mushroom and pine nuts, mackerel and tartar kohlrabi linseed and nasturtium buttermilk, cod cauliflower with crab fritters, Sourdough bread and toasted grains and artichoke puree. I am a coeliac so always feel left out but not at Norse the adaptations meant I didn't miss out. My husband enjoyed an introduction to some beautiful Portuguese wines. The Sommelier provided lots of interesting information on each wine which was particularly useful for wines from areas we were unfamiliar. The service was excellent despite a very busy service. We had been recommended to visit here and were a party of 5 including a 2 year old in a High chair. The decor and furnishings were comfortable and Scandinavian themed without being cold or looking like they had just come from Ikea. The service was informed and friendly and the menu interesting. It was composed of a series of small almost "taster" like dishes that allowed you to have a sharing selection for the party. The food itself was presented in artfully attractive dishes and combined flavours that were tasty and different. Overall a pleasant dining experience but left us feeling still a little peckish at the end. Norse is lovely. Do go there before they are all kidnapped and tethered to a hob in Shoreditch or somewhere. Its atmosphere is relaxed and the staff really care about your enjoyment. The food elevates it to greatness though. I always read the one star reviews for kicks, and pretentious is a word that's used. No. Pretentious implies an affectation; a merry tootling of one's trumpet when you can't hold a note. But here they've (mostly) achieved concertos on a plate because the balance, complementation and technical excellence absolutely matches the ambition. It's not pretentious at all - it is brave and imaginative. The intensity of the flavours is very impressive. As I said, do go. You won't regret it. If you do, there's a chicken in a basket takeaway opposite the conference centre. They have ketchup and everything.

We stayed in Harrogate at the beginning of the year for 3 nights to see in 2017. Looking online for recommended places to eat during our stay we came across Norse but it was unfortunately closed. So when we had the opportunity to go back to Harrogate with work we immediately went online and booked a table.Disappointed we were not!On first impressions the restaurant felt cosy and intimate, the decor is simple yet a little quirky Scandinavian without the Ikea; it had a good atmosphere for both couples and small groups. The staff were extremely friendly and knowledgeable, explaining the menu and suggesting a good wine in line with my tastes. Now the food was incredible! We were recommended to order 3 dishes each, a bit like tapas but the dishes come out as separate courses. We opted for 6 different dishes and shared them to maximise the taste, so in effect had 3 small main courses. There was enough food in those 3 dishes each, so we were not left hungry, although we couldn't leave without sampling a dessert or two! Each dish had a delicate taste to it and my personal favourites were the Whitby Crab, and the Woodpigeon.Onto the price, which I thought was reasonable for 8 dishes in total plus a couple of alcoholic drinks each, £60-£70.I would recommend Norse for anyone looking for a different kind of dining experience, one that allows you to be dressed up or a little more casual, offers a quieter relaxed atmosphere without being stuffy, and serves excellent food. Given the opportunity, I would definitely eat here again.

The food was fantastic however two things happened which over shadowed the food.Firstly, When we received the menus we were told to choose 3 dishes, we couldn't decide which ones so we asked if we could order 4 and the reaction of the waiter made us feel greedy so we only ordered 3. Secondly, one of my dishes was a crab salad, I found two massive pieces of shell one of which I bit down on, I left these on my plate and told the waiter, he did apologise but when the more senior waiter came over to ask how our meal was I had to tell them again about the crab shell. I left feeling like they didn't care that my meal had been ruined by crab shell and I was still hungry!

I loved this restaurant, My wife and I pent our anniversary here and it made it special. The service was relaxed but attentive, the set up is quirky but really well put together. However the real star of the evening (with the exception of my wife) was the food. Everything was cooked superbly, some of it was unusual but it was all prepared beautifully. I would go back in a heart beat.Well done.

I have been here before and you will see my glowing review ("faultless"). I just went for a second time. The food was still fantastic and mostly the service was good. However, we were told after we ordered the apple wibe apperitif that they had run out. The waitress handled it well, quickly suggesting an alternative. Then my friend who was designated driver ordered a bottle of sparkling water and was told they had run out!!! In all my life I have never known a restaurant run out of bottled water. I suggested to the manager that he sends a member of staff out to Tesco to buy some. To be fair he did and and we got the water, but they weren't exactly nice about it and didn't seem to appreciate that if you are a restaurant charging £50 - £100 for a meal then running out of bottled water is a bit lame.

Absolutely wonderful dinner. Everything was very creative and delicious. I was happy to see plenty of both vegetarian and meat options, not the usual situation at restaurants. (And the meat plates had plenty of good veggies). Our waiter was helpful and knowledgeable. I'm looking forward to coming back!

Excellent dinner there on Tuesday 17/10. I'm atavistically drawn to chefs & restaurants that do things I can't do at home. They didn't serve anything I can do at home, either better or close to as well.I chose as the very good waiter suggested - two small starters & one main. The first starter was confit duck egg etc, paired superbly with a Patagonian Chardonnay. The second was even better - wood pigeon with confit parsnip, braised sunflower seeds etc. The German Pinot Noir went beautifully with this, though turned out to be pricey. The lamb main (loin & smoked shoulder) was terrific. Had a Chilean Pais with that, again a good match. The waiter knew his wines & though I didn't follow all of his recommendations I felt in safe hands with a list (thankfully) featuring many new to me wines. Why not 5 stars? Usual answer. The problem with TripAdvisor reviews is people giving 4 & 5 stars to their local curry house or similar.I'll only give 5 stars to truly outstanding restaurants that are worth goi g out of your way for.Was there anything wrong with Norse? It was a tad quiet on a Tuesday night. You'd expect that. Do I recommend it? Unreservedly. Would I go again? In a heartbeat.

Absolutely amazing food. We had the 10-course tasting menu with wines chosen to go with 5 of the courses. Consequently we tasted things we had never tasted before and probably would never have thought of ordering. The food was meticulously prepared and served, and completely different from most restaurants we’ve been to.All in all, a collection of tastes we’ve never experienced before.

It really is excellent so please try it....The food is tapas style I.e. small plates and they recommend 3 per person which is about right. I was slightly nervous of the Scandinavian influence as I’m not a great fish eater, but it’s influenced from there and there are lots of non fish choices. As a new comer to Harrogate I am surprised how much there is in good fish choices when it’s about as far from the sea as you can get. Each dish was certainly fine dining standards and each had interesting and unusual ingredients that gave it a lift and made each course interesting and fun. Wines are good too, and I love a restaurant that has more dessert wine choices than desserts. I wouldn’t recommend particular dishes as everything we had was delicious and the fun is to experiment.

Quirky and delightful. Beautiful stylish decor, intrigiung and exciting dishes. Love the concept of small plates allowing you to enjoy different interesting dishes. The squash dish was spectacular. The wines and aperitifs again were so good. We will definitely be going back with friends. A real find, definitely one to watch for a future Michelin star!

It is my first visit since their move to Swan Road and it is a far more befitting venue for the food than their previous shared premises. Tommy Banks has some serious competition as the food was simply stunning; precision cooking with every morsel full being of carefully balanced flavour, I just loved it! The wine was superb too and they didn’t rob you blind on prices. Michelin star standard, and I cannot wait to go back.

If you love food and appreciate imaginative cooking then you will be well rewarded by a meal at Norse. Unusually the menu is "mezé" style: there are a small number of larger dishes and a larger number of smaller plates, which can be ordered as starters and mains or, as most people seem to be doing, all together so that they can be appreciated by the whole table. The quality of cooking and presentation is excellent and remained so throughout the meal. Portions are not hugely generous but you need to take time to appreciate the care with which the food has been arranged on the plate and the delicious combination of flavours and textures. This is a restaurant where less is definitely more. Horray for deserts that have been made with as much care and thought as other courses, so save some space! A full range wine list is also full of well thought out options, with plenty of less frequently seen labels. Service is smart, knowledgeable and unobtrusive. Unfortunately a strange green wall, which appears to display a badly mown lawn has been retained from the previous occupants; I hope that as the restaurant settles down and succeeds, as it deserves to, the owners can invest in something more in keeping. Decor, as you might expect from the restaurant title is Scandinavian functional. Dress to suit the quality of the cooking!

Booked Norse for our anniversary and although have experienced the fantastic tasting menu before on a couple of occasions this visit even surpassed them. Such a warm and calm relaxed environment with excellent service by knowledgeable staff. Our highlights were the smoked eel and beetroot, the crab dish, stone bass and lamb. When reading the menu it gives no hint of the taste sensations of each beautifully presented dish. The chocolate dessert to finish was sublime and a perfect dish to end on and we left feeling pleasantly full and can't wait for our next visit.

We visited Norse for the first time for my birthday one Saturday lunch time and booked a table for two adults, a small child and a one year old. We arrived promptly at 12 o’clock and were led to a lovely table right in the window in the main restaurant area. The highchair was already there which was great and the lady brought over some menus and a wine list. After a few minutes someone else appeared with a glass of fizz for the birthday boy which was a nice touch. There was a choice of four starters and three mains, and in the spirit of adventure we ordered the lot so we could share and try a bit everything. I enquired about some wine and was told the particular Riesling I’d chosen was fairly unusual and an acquired taste. The lady brought over a sample for me to taste before we committed to a whole bottle, and as it happened the wine was lovely. We were given some bread and butter while we waited for our food, which was homemade and delicious. Our starters arrived and were soon demolished. We didn’t have to wait long for our mains to arrive and all the food was beautifully presented and the flavours exceptional. Although we were only two adults with two small children, the three mains we ordered didn’t seem to go very far so we ordered one of each more. We didn’t mind as the food was so nice and fairly reasonably priced. Round two arrived quickly and again it was enjoyed by all. We ordered one of each of the desserts on offer just so we try all the interesting flavour combinations and they didn’t disappoint either. We all really enjoyed our meal at Norse and will return. The staff, ambience and food are all very good and it is worthy of its great reviews on here.

Wow, what a find! The tasting menu was outstanding. We booked just a day in advance advising of a nut allergy. All was spot on the following evening and the wine pairing was superb! Favourite dishes included the stonebass, eel doughnut & crab. Relaxed atmosphere added to the enjoyment of the evening. If we didn't live so far away I'd definitely be coming back for more. Amazing value for money too!

New location from last year, and now ambience matches food. Delightful to see a small plate style of menu that lets you more or less create your own tasting menu. Each dish (we shared 8, including deserts, plus a mini-starter each) was interesting & delicious. Nice wine list and good by-the-glass options. Service excellent and the right mix of professional & friendly. It is "small plate" so portions reflect that, but pricing is set fairly and the whole point is that you can taste more of the wonderful dishes without filling up too quickly.Michelin star quality at a fair price - long may Norse hold true to that offering!

We visited for a weekend birthday lunch for my partners birthday. I chose this restaurant based on its 2 AA rosette rating and good reviews and I'm so glad I did. Myself and my partner were blown away with the flavours. The food is beautifully presented and the atmosphere in the restaurant is really relaxed and friendly. The wine list is a little bit restrictive and wasn't quite to our taste, but they seem to know what they are doing and the recommended paired wine worked well with our meal. The value of the set lunch is phenomenal and I'd agree with other reviews..my bet is this place is one to watch for higher culinary awards. We will definitely be returning to Harrogate to sample more and have our eye on the evening tasting menu.

I have now been to Norse three times, each better than the last. The experience of going blends what is familiar with an imaginative, Scandi-style pizzazz. Everything is done with flair and composure. It deserves every success that will surely come its way. As you enter the muted wooden door, you’re greeted with a piece of living art: one of two moss walls which adorn the warm and understated interior. Immediately you’re told ‘focus on our food’. Rightly so. The staff are all as courteous, knowledgeable and accommodating as you’d hope. They all clearly like working there, and are interested in the food and drink they are serving. Why wouldn’t they be? It’s interesting and worthwhile. I also like the check-shirt dress code. It’s stylish and smart, but you don’t get the feeling anyone will tell you off for having your elbows on the dark-wood tables!Like the moss wall, the menu is a living thing, on which all of the items are exquisite. I had the Vegetarian taster menu- 9 refined dishes, all of which stood by themselves, but when eaten in succession complemented each other. None of it feels excessive. Norse is clearly not interested in being ‘show-offy’ about the immense care, fine-tuning and process they put into every dish. This would frazzle the brain! Not to say they aren’t proud of what they present, but they are more interested in challenging your perceptions of how ingredients can be cooked. Perhaps the best testament for this is the menu, which simply states the main ingredients that make up a dish, e.g. Hasselback Potato, Onion, Truffle; Cauliflower, Barbecued leek, Nut Milk, Ramson Capers or, for dessert, Greengage Plum, Woodruff Caramel, Rasperry. I should also draw note to the delicious bread we had served, coming with a caramalised yeast butter and a delicious grain mix. The result is a really special and memorable fine-dining experience, which merits more than one trip. Worth going out of your way for.

This was our first trip here, but certainly won't be our last! The restaurant is very stylish and the intimate ambiance was just right. The menu is concise, but still has plenty of choice for most tastes. The food was really excellent modern European style food. The "Nordic" influence reflects the way the food is served, where the meal is made up of a series of small plates. We ordered three each, with some cheese afterwards, which was more than adequate. The highlights for me were the smoked mussels which came with the squid dish and the smoked lamb shoulder wrapped in a leaf which came with the excellent Nidderdale lamb disk. Looking at the sample menus online, I think they also do the smoked lamb as a "snack". Give it a try - it really was excellent . My wife ate mainly vegetarian dishes and was equally pleased. We will be tempted to try the excellent value tasting menu next time. The wine list is very interesting, so we'll probably also have the wine flight!

I would start by saying to take the advice of the welcoming staff with how to 'absorb' the menu and drinks. I don't want to recommend a particular dish as they are all so interesting and will certainly please different palates- just try what you fancy you won't be disappointed!Every single element to each dish compliments the different foods on the plate, we were blown away by the flavours in as little as a mushroom! The portions are not huge, but they are not designed this way, its an experience of flavours to take your time with. The atmosphere was relaxed and peaceful, the greenery is a lovely touch. I wouldn't recommend for a large group, purely because the food is so interesting and amazing, your poor friends won't be able to keep your attention! The staff were great recommending drinks to pair with the dishes we chose and they were just lovely people. We live a few hours away so unfortunately this wasn't local for us but we look forward to returning in the near future and will hopefully see that Michelin Star they deserve!
