Simply exquisite. One of the best taster menus we have ever had with surprise, delight and attention to detail. This delightful food is then paired with a service next to none, what a fab front of house team and sommelier who had so much passion for the wines she was presenting. How this is not a Michelin is bewildering

A return visit to No. 1 Restaurant within the Balmoral Hotel and yet another delightful experience. Emma and her team work so hard to ensure that guests have only the best service. Keith makes all guests feel so special upon arrival and is so attentive through the evening. Mathew Sherry and his team create the most amazing and imaginative food using such wonderful ingredients - each dish so complex but easy on the palate. ‘Oohs’ and ‘Aahs’ flow with each mouthful!! Every member of the Team should have a personal mention but Alex looked after our table last night and was super. An incredibly fine Dining experience so suggest you sample it for yourselves!

Such a comfortable, relaxing restaurant and the staff are friendly. Every year we celebrate my birthday and Emma, the manager, and her team, always make it special. It’s so nice not to have to specify dietary requirements as they keep a note of this. The food is amazing. We had the Tasting Menu with the Prestige wines. We are Edinburgh residents and try not to spoil ourselves too often here. I’d highly recommend you spoil yourselves. Enjoy

Number One continues to provide some of the most exciting and delicious food available anywhere. The welcome we receive from the staff here makes the experience extra special. Emma and Keith oversee the evening with warmth, humour and quiet confidence keen to ensure the experience matches people's expectations and is paced just right for each table. We appreciated the options available for the cheese board now and felt the trolley with the sweeties to finish properly highlighted these little treasures. I now look forward to seeing what flavour the fruit pastel is going to be each visit! The meal was terrific and we loved every mouthful, the scallop, sweetbread and duck were just amazing. The kitchen team here are so talented and consistent. Lastly we met a new Italian sommelier who really sparkled all evening! What a great addition to this team. Number One was a pleasure of a Tasting menu experience, from perfected dishes down to personal service and a comfortable ambiance. Our favorite dishes were the Scallop, Duck breast, The sweetbread, and the Honey comb dessert was fantastic. By far one of the best dining experiences in Edinburgh.

This is our second visit. The restaurant is excellent in all respects and indeed out performs many others with a Michelin star. The chef and the supporting staff deserve this recognition,

The food was amazing and the one who deserves a great shoutout is the Italian wine sommelier who made seriously excellent recommendations of the wine with the courses. The flavors were made extraordinary because of the wine. Definitely worthy of the Michelin Star or 4AA Rosettes as they call it :)

There last night, 18th November and for the life of me cannot remember the team's names probably due to the wine but the team were fantastic. Attentive, polite and they also humoured me and my awful patter after a bevvie. Genuinely a fantastic evening. You should be really proud of the people working there!!❤️

Gourmet restaurant in the hotel. Impeccable service. The tasting menu is really delicious, there is the possibility of food/wine pairing, otherwise a nice wine list and the sommelier gives good advice. The restaurant is below the hotel which is not the most welcoming at first because you have the impression of going down to the basement. The bar at the entrance is classic, the glass wine cellar is very beautiful, then the large and comfortable restaurant room. It was a great experience.

There are complimentary appetizers that burst with delight in your mouth. The bread was warm and the butter was a great compliment. The main course was the Shetland Salmon. We savored every bite! Next came the dessert. I chose the toffee soufflé and my husband chose the Blacketyside cherry pistachio one. Scrumptious beyond words. We ended with complimentary mini desserts! Delectable!! Popped in here yesterday as was told cocktails were fantastic, 38 quid for 2 kay caipirinhas and was pretty much 2 glasses of ice... The staff were absolutely lovely, concierge an absolute gentleman. The lager was decent but cocktails, let down 👎

The Balmoral Hotel is a truly beautiful building and its restaurant upholds the standards of the hotel.

No 1 has not lost its edge for being a place for graceful dining, with its well spaced out tables and super courteous staff. Eating at the weekend there is a fixed tasting-style menu and this was excellent in its variety, presentation and taste. The usual additional extra delicacies are still provided pre- and post- meal. The wine list is extensive and well managed. We had an enjoyable time for a special occasion. It remains a favourite for me in Edinburgh.

My wife and I came on holiday from Utah to Edinburgh and stayed at the Hilton Carlton. Being lovers of fine dining we decided to try Number One at the Balmoral Hotel. It was a unique, unparalleled sensory experience. Mrs Emma treated us like true princes. The tasting menu was superb and the recommended wines excellent. Five-star service.

The food was beautifully presented and tasted great. The place is beautifully decorated and exudes solidity. The service was of the highest level from A to Z and leaves nothing to be desired. We enjoyed a wonderful evening at Number One, which was only possible thanks to the brilliant team. Many thanks again.

The food was exceptional - creative and exceptionally delicious. The staff was attentive and kind. Dinner here was one of my finest dining experiences ever. They had surprise courses in addition to what was on the menu that just made you feel like you were valued as a diner.

Unfortunately we found ourselves surrounded by birthday celebrations - apparently several parties had booked tables individually, and then joined up in animated fashion.This somewhat spoiled our enjoyment of the occasion and the food in what we had anticipated would be a refined atmosphere! Added to this, the charming waiting staff made several mistakes, and a drinks order was forgotten. Overall, not as good as the experience we enjoyed a couple of years ago.

The food is very good. The service is excellent and atmosphere is comfortable. But there is little choice but mainly set dinner only.

Everything was absolutely amazing from the start to the end. The staff -perfect. Nice, friendly, informative. It is in the details, folks. Blown away by the tasting menu…all the love and craftmanship going right into our mouths. My friends third time here and my first. Will definitely come back next year in Edinburgh. Old school and the atmosphere was a bit stuffy. The food was pleasant but not exceptional. We had the 7 course menu at GBP115. Two of the courses were effectively a vegetable amuse bouche, so very small. The Aberdeen Angus sirloin consisted of 3 matchstick sized pieces of beef so small it was almost an insult. The service wasn’t bad but certainly not Michelin worthy, no consistency in who was serving us, we even had to ask twice to get our wine. Can’t recommend ..

We dined on the tasting menu with the prestige wine flight. Loved it. The canapés were a delight. Scallop tartare was an eye opener. Fabulous service.

Not what u expect for the price

So good to be back at the Balmoral’s number one after the recent disruptions and to try the new 3 course set menu for those of us who prefer this to tasting menus. There’s 2 options for each course. The langoustine risotto and strawberry dessert were excellent but the beef main course just lacked in taste the complexity and inventiveness of the other 2 dishes. For setting and attention to detail Number One cannot be beaten. And they do gluten free without fuss. A slight niggle was that whilst coffee was included on the menu, it was an extra on the night.

Wonderful evening . Food fabulous - beautifully presented - delicious 7 course tasting menu . all dietary requirements accommodated, even pre printed menus including these - lovely touch. Michelin quality restaurant without the star. Easily a one star restaurant. Having been to multiple Michelin starred restaurants, one realizes the ratings are inconsistent and I use them only as a general guide. Price was reasonable for the quality and service. Tasting menu was great across the board. We didn't get the wine pairings but the couple next to us did, and the pours looked generous. Instead, we ordered a bottle of St. Emilion Grand Cru which was reasonable priced and were not disappointed.

All 7 courses of our tasting menu were exceptional. The prestige wines that accompanied each dish were very good. The still white wines were served very chilled. Too cold in my view. I would have preferred 12C to 14C range to open up the aroma and flavour. As a digestive I selected the grappa. The bottle had been refrigerated. This should be served at room temperature. The staff were all very polite and explained every dish and wine perfectly. Well done.

Was in Edinburgh for weekend, usually go to Martin Wisharts - thought I'd try the balmoral for a change as I had always wanted to go. The restaurant itself in terms of decor, ambience I thought was just right - service was good throughout, but there was a period at the end of the meal, when I think the restaurant was busier that I felt they had forgotten about taking the plates away. Otherwise made to feel very welcome and service was attentive. On to the tasting menu, didn't go for wine pairing - overall, food felt well cooked, but in my opinion the dishes just felt average. No show stoppers for me sadly except for the tortellini- which was very good, superb earthy sauce to go with it. First up was the squid dish, had similar else where and could have done with a wee drop of chilled sauce, gazpacho. The roe deer dish was too meat heavy, one dimensional - could have done with a wee potato/ fondant to break it up, before that, the scallop dish felt a touch over cooked, was a wee bit chewy, but did smell fantastic. Desserts - milk and honey, was ok ... bit bland. Rhubarb dish, similar ... there was a wee rhubarb tart to finish on the side - looked very pretty buy the tartan casing wasn't delicate enough, too thick in my opinion. Everything just felt a bit safe, would encourage the kitchen to push away from the traditional menu. I would love to see the place get its michelin back. All the best and good luck.

No doubt the tasting menu deserved a 5-star review. Simply covering a lot of culinary skills and phenomenal visual presentation in one meal. The only area I would suggest the restaurant improving was their tea storage conditions. I ordered a pot of tea at the end of the meal, but the tea leaves seemed not to have stored in air-tight container for a while and lost all their fragrance already. The restaurant did not charge for the tea as the server noticed I was not satisfied with it. Nonetheless, the meal by itself was meticulously executed. It only needed a bit more attention to other details to support the very talented kitchen team.

Fine dining at its best! Every dish is thoughtfully crafted, balanced, and divine. My husband and I dined here recently and were treated to an incredible 7-course meal. Scott and Keith took great care of us while we were here and we enjoyed chatting with the executive chef at the end of the meal, too. The Number 1 is situated downstairs in The Balmoral Hotel. I have had dinner here on five separate occasions and I can confidently say it never fails to impress. My daughter and I booked Number One for my wife's 50th birthday as a surprise. We expected great things from the venue due it's high standing in Edinburgh. I have to say it exceeded every expectation in every way possible. The very cool but classy entrance starts the journey where you are greeted by super efficient but very friendly, accomodating staff. The very well informed waiting staff were all on point and also showed a very welcome sense of humour throughout the evening.
