Brilliant food as always, always try to go if in Torquay. Good idea to book in advance, the owner is always fun and the two waitstaff are lovely - always recommend! Also I highly recommend tr Goulash

You will never find a better service, be it restaurant dining or takeaway(as what I had recently) than the Old Vienna. My wife and I have gone here every year for birthdays and this year (after having children) we opted for the takeaway option. Everything is always perfect. Always.

I can’t recommend this place enough! Owner/chef produces the most amazing food, waiting stuff was absolutely brilliant. We had surprise birthday party of 11 people and everyone was very pleased with food and atmosphere. Owner is very friendly and accommodating, nothing was too much for him, he let me bring birthday decorations before the birthday, all our requests were met with a smile! If you looking for special place with great food Old Vienna is THE PLACE!!!❤️

We were so pleased to see that Werner was providing a delivery/takeaway service at The Old Vienna and we definitely weren’t disappointed. With a good range of choice on the menu to choose from, the food was cooked to perfection and no item was overlooked. Speedy delivery from the owner himself, you can’t get better service than that!! Excellent food, excellent service, we couldn’t fault a thing. Would highly recommend. Also worth a visit to The Old Vienna Restaurant when it reopens after it’s Winter break in 2024.

This is without doubt not only the best restaurant in Torquay, it is one of the best in the uk. The food is stunning, the service friendly and wonderful, the atmosphere amazing, and Werner, the owner, funny fun and the perfect host, as well as an amazing chef. We visit every year from Hampshire and it gets better every time

I have to say that when i read about the yodelling chef I was intrigued, the reviews speak for themselves, and I am in complete agreement. When I booked the table ( which is essential as they are only open Friday to Sunday) I had some very friendly emails from Werner so I knew it would be entertaining. We arrived a little early but we were welcomed in and sat down while the restaurant was prepared, all very friendly indeed when they were busy. Once the main man arrived he was as expected, very friendly, chatty and wanted to make you feel special from the start. The menu is full of lovely choices, not overwhelming, just right ! We found all of our courses delicious, perfectly cooked, beautifully seasoned and delightful to taste, all mixed in with a few yodels from the kitchen on times. The most wonderful aspect of dining her besides the food is that there is no rush to get you fed and out, the courses are served with you as a diner in mind, time to savour every mouthful and allow you to enjoy before the next course is served, just as it should be. It’s not cheap, but neither is it astronomically expensive, you get what you pay for, experience, culinary skills and outstanding food. Perfection on a plate. Werner is a great host, with time for his customers, even saying good bye to everyone with a departing schnapps, amazing.

Another fabulous meal, can't fault anything about this restaurant, perfectly cooked food, super friendly staff, always fun to hear the yodelling from the boss, a must if you are in Torquay.

The homemade bread and starter of ravioli were excellent so the meal got off to a good start. Sadly the main course for me of sea bass was a bit over cooked and very salty. The venison was a bit overcooked and the cauliflower puree was tasteless but the almond potato croquette was very good. I gather the Goulash was underwhelming. My husband and I enjoyed the vegetables though. We shared the pancake dessert and a bit disappointed and wished we had chosen an alternative. Reasonably priced and lovely staff who were friendly, polite and clearly working hard.

It's taken us 6 years since moving to Torquay to visit this restaurant. Often, in conversation, recommended by numerous locals. Plenty of gongs and highly rated. A lovely and welcoming team full of enthusiasm. My favourite was the warm complimentary bread rolls. Delicious starter. Average main. Veg a little overcooked. Can't see 5 stars but on balance 4. We avoided a very average and overpriced Aotearoa sav.🇬🇧🇳🇿

Lovely evening with excellent, traditional food - reminded me of my youth with German (Jewish) parents. Delicious asparagus soup, schnitzel followed by apple streudel. Lovely owner/chef who chatted with everyone and even yodelled! Great atmosphere.

Adorable family run restaurant! Lovely people and gorgeous food. The apricot dumpling is to die for. Highly recommend if you like good food in a homely atmosphere.

I love German and Austrian food so this was a real sehr lecker treat. Asparagus soup and wiener schnitzel! The chef owner came out and spoke to all the customers. Nice staff and highly recommend.

The restaurant is fairly small. So booking is a must. We felt right at home as soon as we walked in, as the wait staff were so friendly and helpful. The food is made to order, but trust me, it's worth the wait. You will enjoy every single mouthful. The whole dining experience at this restaurant is truly amazing. You will even get a visit from Werner, as he likes to meet his customers. As long as you can cope with his Austrian sense of humour. Only joking Werner! To summarize: If you want to have a lovely relaxing dining experience and amazing food. I can't recommend this place enough. If you're in a hurry and think that foods just food. This probably isn't the best place for you to go. It's not the cheapest place to dine out. But, the whole experience, is something that you will remember for a long time. Well, until you go again. Old Vienna is justly ranked as about the best restaurant in Torquay. My wife and I had an excellent dinner and would definitely return when we are next in the area. The experience started with warm and crusty home-made bread. My wife chose the scallops while I hade the schnitzel, both really nicely presented and delicious. Possibly the best schnitzel I have had. This was accompanied with a bottle of Austrian wine that complimented the food. We then both chose the stuffed pancake for desert, again delicious. I chose an eiswein to go with this, very nice. This was followed by a schnapps each and a coffee for my wife and a mint tea for me. The service was excellent throughout, and the proprietor Werner very pleasant. All in all a very nice meal, for just under £55 each. The next day we met up with friends who chose a local Beefeater. I costed up what they charged for their nearest equivalent to our meal at Old Vienna and there was hardly £5 difference - give me Old Vienna any time!

Absolutely amazing experience from start to finish, friendly front of house who doubled as a waitress couldn’t do enough for you to make your experience as good as it could possibly be. Food was out of this world wouldn’t hesitate to go back again if me and my fiancee came back to Torquay. Also chef/ owner loved to interact with the customers which shows great humility. Overall a wonderful experience.

A very highly rated place and for good reason judging by our visit. We were fortunate to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary here. If it hadn't had fell on a midweek day then I feel we wouldn't have got in. It's an unpretentious dining room and the atmosphere was very relaxed. The menu is a bit limited and any fussy eater like me may want to phone ahead to check what's on offer. We had fillet steaks and they were excellent, together with a nice selection of vegetables. Note these are included in the price and they can do a bit of "mix and match" across the menu. The desserts were simply sublime. Despite its popularity and reputation we thought the prices are very competitive even compared to lesser establishments. It's a small bar but we were happy. The service from our friendly and attentive waitress was exemplary.

This is a hidden gem, a little out of town but so worth it. We arrived as a group of 18 to celebrate a 75th & a 50th birthday, we could not have been made more welcome by Werner, Julie & Sue. The food was delicious the atmosphere & ambience was stunning and the service was excellent! Highly recommend to all, all 18 of us loved it!

We went to The Old Vienna last night for a birthday celebration and had a wonderful time. The food was absolutely delicious and Werner and his staff couldn’t have been more efficient and friendly. We will definitely be going back and recommending it to our friends.

Small establishment, pre-booking is best. We were lucky enough to get a slot without booking on a Thursday evening, but it was a close call! Excellent food and service. All food, including the bread, is made in house. An enjoyable experience.

As everyone says, fantastic food, warmest greeting and treatment from staff who'd obviously love being there. Book well in advance! This is the kind of establishment where they do one sitting per table per night. 22 covers, so 22 meals served per night. Many dishes are Austrian, then Austrian chef is also the owner and wonderfully charismatic. The food is not shy in flavours. Even the snapse at the end is home made. We'll be returning.

A small intimate restaurant, with an excellent menu that delivered all the way. The staff were a cut above the average, as was the service they gave. A definite gem on the Riviera.

This was the highlight of our visit.My partner is Austrian and he wanted to show off his favourite foods, wine and how well he can speak German! This place did not disappoint. From the gorgeous wine, lovely staff and insanely good food to the yodelling, decor and complimentary schnapps - the evening was perfect. Werner is the perfect gentleman and the night we went was almost single handedly running the kitchen aswell as showing his face in the restaurant and making all his guests feel welcome. Excellent, professional front of house staff who were attentive but not over bearing. The food was amazing, the chef bringing complementary schnapps and having a chat about the food at the end really added a friendly touch. The wine we had was lovely too!

If you’re in Torquay, you don’t want to miss this delicious food, excellent service and cozy atmosphere. We’re so glad we booked a table in advance, because the restaurant was full. what an amazing place, we came to torquay for our anniversary and booked this place from reviews and it did not disappoint, firstly greeted by these amazing sisters who made us feel like we were home, we didn't need to ask for anything it was with us straight away, the most amazing bread we have ever tasted in unlimited supply if wanted, beautiful selection of wines and the food WOW!!! we have never eaten such high standard food from start to finish it was superb!!The beautiful ladies at the front who remember every detail of every customer to make them feel special or just valued was rare to see, the chef werner giving us a complimentary glass of sparkly for our anniversary and joining us after our meal to chat, such a lovely talented man, we have had the best experience at a restaurant ever, highly recommend and will definitely be travelling to visit again!THANK YOU.

We were had been looking forward to our dinner as we had booked one of the top restaurants in Torquay… Old Vienna. An Austrian restaurant. Many years ago we used to go to an Austrian restaurant between Poole and Bournemouth and loved the food. So the chance of dinner here could not be missed.The restaurant is small, looking like a beautifully decorated private house from the outside. The owner and chef, Werner, has a huge reputation for cooking delicious food. Even our taxi driver raved about his cooking.Once inside we were warmly greeted and offered a choice of three tables for two. We chose one by the window. There was about a total of twenty seats in the restaurant and these were soon filled up.The menu was very interesting and once again we forgo starters hoping for a pudding.Drinks were ordered… a pint of wheat beer for me and as usual a tonic for Jean. Some interesting bread was brought but was no to Jean’s taste so I dived in. It was made from sun dried tomatoes but also caraway seeds had been added. I love the taste of caraway as my Nana used to make caraway seed cake for me and my Papa. The menu was interesting and I could quite easily have chosen any one of five dishes. But to me the one that shone through was the “roasted rump of lamb”! Those that know me will say “No surprises there then”! This was served with sweet potato crisps, sweet potato fondant, smoked aubergine purée and a rosemary and garlic jus.Jean decided on the more traditional Classic Wiener Schnitzel with a cranberry sauce. We also received a large dish of mixed vegetables. Sauté potatoes, red cabbage, courgette, carrot and another vegetable that I think was either turnip or kohlrabi.Jean’s Schnitzel was huge. The veal was “butter” tender and the coating crisp… but, as usual it was far too big for her and she had to ask for a “doggie bag”. The local crows were well fed the next morning, there are plenty of them around in a park on the way in to town.On my plate were two thick, pink slices of the lamb. An excellent portion. The lamb was moist and tender and delicious. The plate was a picture. To the side of the lamb were three rosettes of the aubergine purée, a small, roasted sweet potato and a small pile of the sweet potato crisps. Heaven on a plate. There was/is only one problem with this meal… we live too far away to repeat it as often as I would like.Although fairly “stuffed” we felt we had room for a desert. For Jean it was the homemade apfelstrudel whilst for me the apricot dumplings. Both were lovely and rounded off an excellent meal. As you would expect the staff were superb.As a last little treat, Werner, the owner came to the table with a nice glass of Austrian schnapps for me.All-in-all a wonderful meal in lovely comfortable surroundings.

We booked online because we suspected it might be very busy, although it's a little away from the front. It was indeed fully booked and it soon became clear why - this is a restaurant which is well worth seeking out. The food is superb - great quality ingredients, sublimely cooked with some fantastic little twists. The smoked duck breast starter was accompanied by an avocado and mango salad - oh golly! The duck was moist and, although perhaps a little too chilled, very tasty. The mango in the salad zinged around my taste buds and everyone at my table was envious when I allowed them a [tiny] sample: when I get food of this standard on my plate, I'm not a sharer! The sea bass main course demonstrated the confidence of a really fine cook - not afraid to turn up the heat to get the skin crispy but skilled enough to ensure the fillets were still moist. Puddings were similarly top notch and there was a comprehensive selection of reasonably priced wines. Service was efficient and friendly and I will certainly be calling in again if I am in the area.

One of the best restaurants we've been to with my partner, without a doubt. The food, atmosphere, hospitality of staff was absolutely fantastic! Werner (the owner I believe) even found the time to come out and talk to the guests at every table.. we had a lovely evening at your restaurant, thank you! This place is exceptional. We go every year when we visit the area and it never disappoints. Friendly attentive staff, good varied menu and excellent food. The restaurant is small but it feels cosy and has an old fashioned charm. We all ordered different food and it was all amazing. We then had a long chat with Werner after the meal and he was charming and funny. Can’t wait to come back next year

This place is great. I've been to many German / Austrian / Swiss places and the food is always subpar. Everything we had was excellent. The schnitzel was unbelievably good. They even had gluten-free schnitzel options. That's a rarity. The environment is also great. They had an accordion player that made the evening extra special. I have never seen anyone that enjoyed playing music as much as he did. We have been coming to Myrtle Beach for 35 years and have never stopped here before. My fault, my error. I will always make this a stop when we are here. Well run, lots of fun, and very enjoyable.

Eating in a decent restaurant in Torquay at the moment can be tricky as it’s so busy so we were chuffed to book a Tuesday evening space.Expectations were high based on the reviews and we were not disappointed - the restaurant is quite small but doesn’t feel crowded at all. The service was excellent, the food delicious and as nice as we’ve had from anywhere - and the wine list was spot on.We loved our three course meal, and will definitely come back next time we are in Torquay - oh and no children are allowed so we had to leave them with a babysitter, which was also perfect :)

Visited in group of 6 friends for a special birthday. Glass of sparkling wine for the birthday girl when we got there was a nice touch. Friendly, helpful staff. It’s been several years since I visited and as a vegetarian I was slightly uncertain what choice there would be for me as my memory was of very meat based food. However, I had a lovely main course of stuffed pepper- much nicer than I was expecting and there was a second vegetarian choice on the menu. All people in our party really enjoyed all their food.

We went here on a recent short stay in Torquay; it was our wedding anniversary and this restaurant seemed to fit the bill. We were quite right! It feels quite old fashioned, which was all the better, and the greeting and service were very friendly and personal. In fact when the meal was finished we had a good chat with the two ladies (sisters) who make up the backbone of the front of house (did not take their advice as to what to do and not do the next day - and lived to regret it!) as well as Werner, the chef/proprietor, and it 's great to feel they all have time for you.The restaurant is quite small, but there is no feeling of being crammed in; we felt there was plenty of room to stretch out if we needed to. The ambience is from an earlier, less chaotic era, and this is what gives it its charm.The food was excellent, and although you wouldn't say it was cheap, the fact that the staple and the vegetables are included with the cost of the main course means it is not as expensive as it looks.When we return to Torquay we will certainly eat here again.

Booked this restaurant after our first choice was cancelled due to covid. For a birthday meal. My main meal was presented to me on a chipped plate, spoke to the waitress about my plate, she said the chef was short of plates.!!! I found this was unacceptable service, felt I had to ask her for my plate to be changed.!!

A brilliant restaurant with fantastic menu. We had the Scallops, Lobster Ravioli for starters, Duck breast, Beef Fillet for mains, apricot dumpling and pancake filled cherries for desserts. The staff were very friendly and the owner made time to talk to every table. A great fine dining experience.

From start to finish the staff were friendly, attentive and made you feel like you were the only people they were serving, even time for conversation to find out the reasons you have visited.Gave us a complimentary prosecco for our anniversary.The food was sublime- the starters where mouth watering, the mains where out of this world the lamb was the most tender thing ever.I never have a pudding but after the first 2 courses were to die for, I had no choice but to have one- which did not disappoint.And a free snapps too finish the evening.

It was our lucky night, as my partner contacted Werner to see if a table was available and there had been a cancellation. 19.00hrs meant we couldn't watch England beat Germany at the football but as all the pubs were fully booked this didn't matter.We walked the 4 miles from Paignton to work up an appetite and we were rewarded with a fabulous meal. The schnitzel was shear perfection. The service was excellent and the bill didn't break the bank. Werner himself came out of the kitchen for a yodel and to chat with all the patrons (about 20 fills the place). A complimentary schnapps rounded off the evening.

This is a gem of a restaurant. Very homely and welcoming. Excellent food beautifully presented in an authentic Austrian tradition. The best we have had in the area.

This is a wonderful little restaurant where you get a taste of Austrian food elevated with modern twists. Regional beer is also available. The hosts are welcoming and enthusiastic. It’s hard to think how anything could possibly have been any better.

We were so looking forward to visiting The Old Vienna booking it months ago and wow it didn’t disappoint. The service from start to finish was 5* The food was so tasty and beautifully presented. Their knowledge of gluten free is excellent with lots of choice. We had a complementary glass of schnapps served by Werner himself who is so funny and gave everyone one of his famous yodels. Just the best experience as an end to our visit to Torquay. We will be back. Thankyou all at The Old Vienna.

If you are looking for mid to top range dining, you must come here.Food and service are excellent. Very interesting wine list. Werner, the owner, came yodelling into the dining room to say hello. He seems quite a character. It is a relatively small restaurant ( I’d guess at 26 covers) so book well ahead of time to avoid disappointment.

Old Vienna is in a residential area near the centre of Torquay. I'll admit that we chose it partly because it's one of only a very few decent restaurants in the town that are open on a Sunday. We had a goo friendly booking experience, in which the owner asked if it was a special occasion for example. The outside of the restaurant is not so promising but inside it's really nice. The food is a mixture of Austrian specialities and British/European dishes. In a way the best of both worlds for us: we were able to have some dishes that reminded us of skiing and walking holidays in Austria; but at the same time, and in contrast to almost everywhere in Austria, the chef really knows how to cook seafood, including a really good scallop starter. The kitchen seemed to be struggling a little to keep up (long wait fr main course), but service was good (they didn't neglect us during the wait). The apfelstrudel was not quite what I expected but everything else very good. It's really a 4.5 so I have been generous, because it certainly exceeded expectations.

Had a wonderful evening, service from the two sisters was fantastic.. both were brilliant at their jobs & super to chat with .Werner too was really friendly, funny & loved hearing him yodel. The Food is delicious. My Lamb Tagine was so tasty .. all our party enjoyed everything too. Such a great place. Can't wait to come back when we visit Devon again.

Well reviewed and easy to see why, I booked the restaurant months ago knowing we were coming down to Torquay on holiday. I’m glad we had or we wouldn’t have gotten near it due to its popularity.Food was exceptional and staff first class, the owners a real character and helped make the night.

Where to even begin with this place.. We came from Birmingham on a break for the Mrs birthday and wasn't able to book in anywhere on the Saturday due to it being busy but the owner here called me up and reserved us a table at 8pm! Upon arrival we were greeted by very kind waitresses and the rest was history! Words cannot describe how nice and flavoursome the food is here it should be 10 star not 5 star and from start to finish we were treated like royalty.. pricing was also very cheap compared to other high end restaurants we always give credit where its due and this place didn't fall short of a 5 star experience. If we ever come down south again this place will be our go to spot! Thank you again it was a perfect night!

Werner is an amazing host as are the two ladies who look after you the minute you walk through the door. This is one of the best eating out experiences we have ever had, exceptional food with amazing service.Thank you Werner and your team, we will be travelling back to Torquay to visit your wonderful establishment again.

We had an incredible time at this lovely charming restaurant. The meal was exquisite and very authentic! We celebrated an anniversary dinner there and we felt like we were back in Austria. Everything was amazing and the staff very attentive. Thank you Werner for a fantastic dining experience!

So pleased managed to get a table as there was an on the day cancellation. Good choice on the menu, great freshly prepared food, good service. Acknowledged my sisters bday with a glass of prosecco and all offered complimentary schnapps at the end of the meal served by the owner. Highly recommend

What a hidden gem - look it up and book for a good quality meal. Brilliant host and excellent service - despite being 45 mins late, due to timing error (mine) - nothing was said and we were welcomed in The food was top quality.

We enjoyed yet another wonderful meal yesterday at this great local restaurant. The food is of such a high quality prepared by proprietor Werner. Additionally the lovely waitresses Julie and her sister Karen are such fun, efficient and great to be with. We came with my partners 90 year old mother who had such a good. Many thanks to everybody. We shall be back many times.

My boyfriend and I booked a meal here as part of our holiday in Torquay. After visiting lots of restaurants in the area this was one of our favourites! The restaurant is cosy, the service is friendly and the food is delicious. Our meal even ended with a free shot each. This is a lovely place and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.

I booked for my husbands birthday and this was an amazing choice. Loved the food and excellent service.
