Visited 2 nights in a row, when staying at the nearby campsite. The service was good and the food came quickly. The beef rib the first night was a real highlight. The beer that I had, Lord Marples bitter was bang on. The beer selection was good, some pale, some amber and some bitter, varied percentages. Prices were fair for the quality and location. Charged a different price for my pint than what was on the printed menu & board. However, this was amended when I pointed out to the staff. Likely just a glitch in the system. Well worth a visit, the beer garden is very well done too.

Visited on a busy Saturday night and was worried that everything might be a bit slow. On the contrary service was excellent. Full credit in particular to the guy running the bar. He was really on the ball. He also served up some well kept local ales. The food was really tasty. I thoroughly enjoyed the Cullen Skink, which was a new dish for me. Enjoyed our night so much that we immediately booked up to return later in the week.

When we arrived, they were extremely busy, but managed to fit us in for an hour and a hour slot. The food came out very quickly and managed to fit in a starter, main and dessert in the time we were given. The food was super tasty and would recommend the pate for starter. For main we had the venison and cherizo burger.... Go for it... You won't regret it! Staff were friendly and made us feel important even though the restaurant was busy.

We visited the Packhorse Inn whilst staying at a nearby cottage for a long weekend with family and what a great find it was. It is a really lovely village pub with a great atmosphere and the staff were very friendly and attentive. The food was exceptional and a good choice for everyone including delicious, tender steak, seafood bisque, rabbit pie, venison and chorizo burger and belly pork for mains. The starters were delicious too and everything very reasonably priced for top quality food. Would definitely recommend this pub if you are visiting in the area.

After a few disappointing pub meals in this area, all with pretty similar menus and pretty similar pricing, this one really blew us away. The staff were excellent, the service was exquisite, as were the surroundings, but the food… was truly glorious. Perfect in every way. And for no extra cash. we went here on our last night in Derbyshire, and we all went home with a little song in our hearts for this place. I couldn’t recommend it highly enough. We’re already planning next years trip, and it will mainly revolve around eating here. I want to try everything on the menu.

We had a lovely meal here on a recent weekend away. The pub was recommended so we booked in advance and are so glad we did. We asked to sit outside when we booked and the friendly manager had arranged it all. We had a lovely waitress, good service and great food. This would have been a 5 star review but there was one large negative which was the use of patio heaters. Not only are they massive polluters but they were also burning our heads. Given the current climate crisis we cannot afford to heat the outdoors. In other countries people eat outside in all weather e.g. the Swedish in the cold and snow. We are English and so we are used to dressing for all weather with layers and people can always bring blankets or provide them. Please read this article about the risk to the planet of overheating and get rid of the patio heaters - what-on-earth-outdoor-patio-heating-1.5763692

We visited the Packhorse on 19th June having booked after reading the good TripAdvisor reviews. The pub is very traditional and we were fortunate to have a lovely window seat. The service was attentive and friendly. We enjoyed all of the main meals we ordered - homity pie, sea bream and pork belly. Portions were very generous. A great place for good, homemade food. The beer selection is also fantastic with a great selection of Thornbridge ales, one of the attraction factors for us. The only thing that let it down was the temperature. The door to the garden terrace and the front door were both open. Unfortunately the weather was rather cold and the chill coming through the pub was very uncomfortable. We would have liked to stay for pudding but we were so cold we decided to go home. Overall great food, beer and service but comfort was not good.

We have visited The Packhorse on every visit to the Peak District for the last 8 years and have always raved about it to family and friends. First meal there this time on the 12th was as amazing and delicious as always with the added delight of enjoying the new outside space. The staff were fantastic and we left feeling delighted that this special little place had survived the lockdown and come back better than ever. What a shame that we had such a disappointing experience only a week later on the 18th. With a couple of family members in tow, who were about to have their first experience of The Packhorse, we left feeling deflated and embarrassed as the food served up was nothing to the culinary delights experienced the previous week. Whoever was working that night in the kitchen clearly has no idea about consistency as we were short changed on the starters - three sardines with a healthy serving of salsa one week, two with virtually no salsa the next. Burnt toast to accompany the haddock rilette and don’t get me started on the awful presentation for the venison and chorizo burger, which my husband had been salivating over the week before. The brioche bun had been replaced with something out of the local supermarket and the chips had been thrown all over the plate. When we commented to the waitresses all we got as a response was that each chef puts their own twist on the dishes. Can we suggest that the chef who was working on the 18th takes their lead from the one who was working on the 12th? Such a shame as we want to come back, but maybe not this year sadly.

The walk. This circular 7 mile (2hrs 45mins) walk from the pub packs an enormous amount of variety into a fairly short distance. From the pub walk up to Monsal Head and then follow the Wye Valley. Enter Great Shacklow Wood and onto the beautiful village of Ashford in the Water. Then follow the footpaths along a typical section of the limestone plateau and farmlard back to Monsal Head. Expect to see Buzzards, Barn Owls, Curlews, Blackcaps and Dippers along the way.The Pub. To comply with the latest Covid Restrictions the landlord has built a covered pergola on the back terrace complete with a coal fire and log burner recreating the atmosphere of pub outside. It's just the best dog friendly authentic pub, serving great beer and proper, well cooked, good value, unprentious grub. I had the pork belly washed down with two pints of Jaipur and the wife had Chicken Supreme and a chilled Sauvignon blanc followed by sticky toffee pudding and cheese board. I have been visiting the packhorse with my family for over 5 years and have never ever been disappointed. Food is always incredible, as is the atmosphere and service. I booked today to visit for my birthday, and due to COVID regulations seating can only be outside. I arrived and was considerably concerned by how busy it was, perhaps that was my fault for booking on a Saturday evening, but I suppose I expected that they would be operating at a reduced capacity in order to enforce social distancing but this was sadly not the case. The pub was extremely busy and my family were greeted with a huff from the waitress (understandably I would not be pleased to work in a packed pub in the current climate). Tables were extremely close, not at all like the Facebook post of the outside area, and the seating area is like an annexe, not in fact outside, and therefore no ventilation. Additionally it seems that customers wearing face masks when not seated was not being enforced at all. Did not feel like a safe environment at all, and forced me to leave without even ordering, birthday ruined. Such a shame as in the autumn their COVID precautions were spot on. I hope next time I visit is different.

I had a taste though and it was tasty and tender. Always have a different selection of good, well kept beer, with at least 2 or 3 from Thornbridge, which are always nice. I was told the table was taken even though the guests had not arrived by the time we left.We only stayed to eat and then left to have a hot drink and mince pie in a warm welcoming cafe in Bakewell. More customer service training neede. A shame as the food was fine. Go the extra mile ..come on Packhorse, not as good as I remember

We were glad we booked, even on a Monday night in January all tables were reserved but we were lucky to get an early table. Best lamb hotpot I have had anywhere, the seasoning was perfect and whole dish was light and tasty. Halloumi fries great and not too salty. Also tried some of husband's KFP - lovely - and the chips I tried were excellent too. Bakewell pud with custard (and cream!) was delicious. Really lovely welcome from the guy behind the bar and great service from him, checking if all was okay. We drove quite a way from where we were staying and it was worth the journey. Would definitely recommend.

Stopped here for a late lunch and despite it being very busy we were seated quickly. The menu is amazing with a great mix of dishes. Fed up of turkey I plumped for baked cod linguine with a crayfish sauce. Absolutely delicious. Perfectly seasoned. The place itself is quaint and very country. There is a lovely atmosphere. Well worth a visit but might be an idea to phone ahead. I think we just got lucky.

I went here for a late pre-Christmas lunch with 3 good friends and had a memorable experience. The food choices were extensive for such a small place. We all cleared our plates of the mains and the dessert of Bakewell pudding and custard was just delicious.

We've been visiting The Packhorse for many years and it has never disappointed. Either when calling in with muddy boots for beer and chips or Sunday lunch with relatives. Somehow it manages to retain its character as a traditional pub, but serves tapas and a good variety of hearty food. You may have to book to be sure of a table but if they can fit you in they will. Or if they can't they'll tell you. Fabulous place and may it long continue !

This is my first TripAdvisor review in about 6 or 7 years, but felt I had to add to the glowing reports this pub receives because it really is fantastic. My girlfriend and I stayed nearby in an Airbnb and the Packhorse was recommended and we were both so glad it was.

Stumbled across this pub on a quiet Monday an hour before closing and the staff couldn't have been nicer. The pub itself is absolutely gorgeous, very nostalgic and felt like stepping into a different time period. The food menu was extensive and delicious. Would recommend to anyone.

Recently visited Chatsworth for a few days and our airb&b; host suggested the Packhorse. What a great suggestion. The meal was lovely, great choice, beautifully cooked and presented but the atmosphere was fantastic. It was quiz night and the entire pub was included and involved. One of the best evenings for many years. I will definitely return. Thoroughly recommended.

The owner of this pub has obviously got a target audience in mind and it's not your average walker who just wants a pint. Nowhere to sit inside as all the tables are reserved. When spotting a vacant table we asked a member of staff if we could sit there until the diners arrived. He asked if we were wanting food, we said no, just a drink. Oh it's reserved came the reply. We got the impression if we'd been wanting food then the table would have magically unreserved. This was 2.15 and the pub closes at 3.00. I get the impression all the tables remain reserved on the off chance late arrivals want food.

We last visited the Packhorse Inn in 2014, I am happy to say that it is still a great pub with wonderful food. We booked a table for lunch on Sunday, it's great to see a full menu available on a Sunday, not just a carvery option. The selection at the bar is wide with both great ales and wines.

Visited here on 6th November as my partner had booked a nearby apartment as a birthday surprise. This pub had been recommended to us by friends who had previously visited, and it didn’t disappoint! On arrival at the pub, it was all lit up and looked very welcoming and cosy, which continued inside. They had a number of fires going which was a lovely touch.

Ate here for the second time this afternoon and was equally as impressed as the first time. The pub was cozy and welcoming on a cold damp day with a roaring fire and welcoming friendly staff. The Thornbridge beer was first class and the food great. Between a group of four we had Cullen Skink, Mutton, Pheasant, Oxtail Stew, Smoked Haddock followed by Sticky Toffee Pudding and Creme Brûlée. All round this is a great pub but booking is absolutely essential, we heard at least one couple turned away and this was at 5pm.

CAN'T RECOMMEND ENOUGH. My wife and I had dinner at the Packhorse earlier this week and LOVED IT! It's a small pub and it is a good job we had booked a table, but the food was amazing, as was the atmosphere and the easy mix of locals and tourists. I had a lamb shoulder dish which was amazing, along with a local ale. The guy serving was great fun too. intend to go again next I'm in the Peaks.

Called in today for lunch - we (2 of us)sat down at a table and were told we couldn't sit there as there may be a larger party arriving at sometime (or not) so we were asked to move to the back room and sit at a tiny cramped table in the corner in the dark room - when we left there were 2 seperate couples sitting at the table we had chosen so we would have been fine. The Black sheep beer was sour unlike the excellent beer we have had here in the past and the beef sandwich was chewy and stringy so was difficult to eat - so all in all not a great experience and I am local and have loved this pub in the past - should have gone to Hassop station for lunch - will think twice before coming back in a while

We First Visited The Packhorse whilst staying in the village 6 years ago and have returned annually since the Management and staff are first class as is the food we generally eat there at least twice on our stay and have to say we have not had anything approaching an average meal !! The presentation and quality of the ingredients are both of a very high standard from such a little pub , it’s a real gem so would highly recommend it but make sure you book in advance at weekends
