Great meal - lovely setting. Staff very attentive (without being overly so), and the food was awesome from the appetisers through each of the 3 courses. We could see the food being prepared - kitchen staff clearly take pride in their work. Imaginative menu - seriously there was nothing not to like. We will be back! Diolch yn fawr!

We had several fantastic dinners here recently while staying at the hotel - two at the restaurant proper and one casual bite in the lounge. The Chef and his team have developed a creative, interesting menu with significant attention to detail. We mentioned we had hoped lamb to be on the menu - a word was passed to the Chef and the next night he had procured local lamb for us as a special! We couldn’t have been happier. Service was attentive and the sommelier was very informative. One slight miss was a pigeon starter (the pigeon was extremely tough), but otherwise top notch!

We had a super short break at Penmaenuchaf. Our room was warm and cosy with great views of the gardens and with a large en suite bathroom. The food at dinner was excellent with a great choice on the menu and beautifully cooked and presented.. Service was very good. Friendly but efficient. Our little dog was made very welcome and joined us next day in the dog friendly breakfast room where we enjoyed a freshly cooked and very good breakfast. We will stay longer next time. Highly recommended.

The quality of the ingredients, presentation and flavour of the food was outstanding. It’s clear the chef’s are very skilled. The canapés were a treat, fresh and full of flavour. We both had the cod to start, beautifully cooked with a great sauce, lovely! I had the sea bass my wife the lamb. Great dishes and fantastic accompaniments. The attention to detail? I had a few cherry tomatoes on my plate, there for colour I thought? No, skinned and packed with flavour, beautiful. I’m a bugger for using salt and pepper, no need food was seasoned perfectly. £69 for 3 courses, yes! you pay up-to £20 for fish chips in any old pub these days. You are paying for top quality food you will struggle to find, cooked by trained and talented chef’s. The last time we had a meal that good? Monica Galletti 2 years ago!

We had a great Sunday lunch at Penmaenuchaf on 16th July. We were travelling from South Wales to the North West (great driving roads) and this was a perfect pit-stop. We had eaten Tom Hine's food before when he worked with Michael Caines at both Gidleigh Park and Lympstone Manor and had delicious meals each time. I'm delighted to say that those high standards have been maintained at Penmaenuchaf. My wife had turbot followed by beef and then a raspberry tart while I started with slow cooked egg and burnt leeks followed by pork and then a chocolate and hazelnut dessert. The food and drinks were all great. We enjoyed a pre-lunch drink in the lounge - big old leather sofas in a wood-clad former billiard room - and were presented with a couple of really tasty amuse bouche each. The bread rolls and butter were clearly home made and way more tasty than anything you could buy in a supermarket. And the butter was soft enough to spread which is generally a good sign - why do some restaurants only take the butter out of the fridge as they serve it to you - hard and unspreadable? The turbot was a small but super fresh portion of the fillet in a delicious, light creamy chive 'soup'. Both the beef and pork were full of flavour but I'd say the beef just edged it for me - very soft and with a punchy red wine jus. It also came with super, proper roast potatoes which you can rarely get in restaurants - most of the time they've sat steaming under hot lamps too long and lose their crispy outer texture; these had that great contrast with the fluffy inner. My wife had a glass of brouilly while I had a white rioja with the pork. Both were spot on. Service was attentive but unobtrusive. The setting is quiet and peaceful, situated in the orangery restaurant, with views out at the gardens and the hills beyond. We were surprised to find Tom had pitched up at this quiet, picturesque hotel just outside Dolgellau; the goal must be to make Penmaenuchaf a destination restaurant as he and Michael did with Gidleigh Park. We wish him and his team all the best in doing this. Next time we make the trip we will definitely be returning to the restaurant.

Penmaenuchaf has long provided a comfortable relaxed retreat where food and wines meet high expectations. New owners, the Wales based Seren group of prestige hotels arrived in June 2022 and are undertaking a well thought out upgrading of the entire hotel. Fortunately for diners a newly fitted kitchen and new head chef Thomas Hine bring in a confident delivery of fine dining that matches the highest levels across the UK. We relaxed in the large lounge to enjoy a pre meal drinks and ordered our starter, both choosing trout and main courses of cod and Welsh lamb whilst gazing over the arrival of spring in the terraced garden. A duo of delicious canapés, diced smoked salmon tartlet with herring roe and warm cheesy puff with finely grated Parmesan were served on a shiny slate. We were led to our table up a short theatrical curved stair to the dining conservatory that was well illuminated by the intertwined ‘gothic’ arched windows. The starter was a delight to the palate and to the eye. The trout was slightly smoked and poached for a short time and was served in a herb butter. The homemade rolls were perfectly baked and singly light and airy. My lamb was served pink and was so tender, the slice of lamb breast was slowly cooked to tenderness and finished with a scorched crust. The accompanying polenta with lamb jus was exquisite. My wife’s cod was delicately cooked and the fleshy flakes just tumbled into the accompanying sauce. Each component was just right and well assembled. The wine list is comprehensive and well selected, our wines by the glass, Provence rose, NZ Sauvignon blanc and Rioja Reserva were each from esteemed producers. Capucino and Earl Grey was served in the lounge with a pair of in house truffles and salted fudge. Lunch at Penmaenuchaf is a lovely experience and the present price delivers the finest value in the area.

We took advantage of the black Friday offer. It was something like £33pp for 3 courses whereas it would normally be £56. This was excellent value and it's a great idea putting offers on to attract local people. Everything was delicious and a taste explosion. Unfussy food cooked to a really high standard. It's always a treat having the little extras. We enjoyed canapés in the lounge in front of the fire. Home made bread came before the starters and we paid a little extra for coffee and petit fours. The only constructive criticism I can give is we both felt that our fish main meals (i'm sure it was hake) needed some form of carbohydrate to make it a more complete meal. It came with greens. Both the fish and veg were superb but the addition of a carbohydrate would have made it more balanced and satisfying. I hope this will be included the next time I return. This is the only reason I'm not giving 5 stars. Service was very good and the hotel itself is beautiful. Can't wait to return. I haven't had such an enjoyable meal in quite some time.

We visited in February 2020 to celebrate a special event for my sister. My 2 sisters had visited last year and really enjoyed their stay so we decided the 4 of us visit. Our visit was for 2 nights and dinner was included the first night. The hotel itself is lovely, very clean and comfy in beautiful surroundings. We arrived and rang the bell, staff offered to help bring your luggage into the hotel and thats about it. There was no offer to take bags to your rooms despite there being 2 floors. There is a manager called Mark who was abrupt to the point of rudeness. I told him the heating did not kick in until 7.30am in the morning, he said that could not be right and I assured him it was as it was the cold that woke me up, it was only after a member of staff interjected that there had been a power cut earlier in the week and that may have caused the issue did he take note. There was no apology expressed at all. Our TVs did not work during our stay at all.One of our rooms, nothing in terms of teas, coffees was replaced, my room did have some tea replaced. My impression is that if you want anything, you have to ask, the hotel is not forthcoming to provide anything. Our dinner on the first night was ok, the portion sizes are tiny and luckily we brought snacks for the evening. The hotel is quite remote and you have you go up a windy narrow path to the hotel. There is no lighting outside at night time, it was pitch black and as a result we decided to have a meal in the hotel the second night despite the cost being £30 each for 2 small courses. We asked one of the ladies called Di what was on the menu, she said "how do I know, Ive just walked in", she made no effort to find out. She was probably the most miserable of the staff there. She really should not be in the hospitality industry given her unhelpful demeanour. We all decided to have soup and the bread rolls were brought out. They were rock hard, we sent them back. They came back as burnt and then finally frozen in the middle. I had asked for fish and when it arrived it was raw and bloody in the middle. Rather than cause a fuss in front of the other diners, I went into the kitchen to show the chef - what a rude patronising individual he was, he said I didn't know what I was talking about, the bread rolls are meant to be crunchy, the fish suffers distress and its usual to see blood!!! what claptrap!!! As he was talking his voice got louder, I then left the kitchen and we did not eat our meal and returned to our rooms. To be fair Lorraine, the owner, called to apologise and offer sandwiches which we declined as we had no appetite left. Our stay cost £750 for 4 for 2 nights so not cheap so it made us chuckle in amazement when we were presented with a bill for £16 for 3 tonic waters, an orange juice and a grapefruit juice!! All in all, despite the beautiful surroundings, we left massively disappointed.

My partner booked a table for my birthday dinner "treat". We had very high expectations after reading reviews online. We chose to order off the Market Menu which offers a small selection of starters, mains and puddings. The lounge area is very pleasant but the conservatory where you eat lacks atmosphere.I had a crab starter which was served cold - very very cold - too cold.We both selected the 6oz Sirloin steak main course served with celeriac, red cabbage, shallots and jus.The presentation was not ideal but most surprisingly the steak was served sliced and was not either tasty or of particularly good texture. We both sent our dishes back and mentioned my issue with the cold starter as well. We refused another dish as the moment had been lost. The hostess apologised and said there would be no charge!!When the bill arrived I expected to be charged for our wine but also on the bill was the bottle of still water we had asked for at £5.10 and 2 starters.Very poor experience and one that we won't repeat. We were the youngest by at least a decade and had to whisper over breakfast because talking felt rude. We were asked what time we would take breakfast, if we would be back late and if we would have dinner at the restaurant. I felt like I was at school with a curfew. Didn’t like having to set a time for breakfast, surely a window is enough. The hotel restaurant is WAY overpriced. We recommend going to the torrent walk hotel 3km down the road. Hotel is beautiful inside and out. Staff are welcoming and attentive. The first question you are asked is whether you are having dinner. I suppose most people say yes at this point. Very disappointed with the menu choice. Set menu for £30pp or slightly more choice at £50pp. This hotel sells its food as "fine dining" and charges extortionate prices for the experience. My 1st course was tiny slithers of scallop which would fit in a teaspoon along with yellow coloured drizzle.... It actually looked like the pattern on the plate. 2nd course was a tiny piece of lamb and 1cooked beetroot with drizzle. 3rd course was 3 crackers and 2 slithers of cheese. It didn't taste like anything special and I could whip the whole thing up £4. Another couple eating at the same time complained and asked where the vegetables were. Waiting staff got very embarrassed and replied "I will ask chef if he can do you some". She came back out with a teacups worth of shredded cabbage to share. Every guest during my stay was over 65 and obviously being taken advantage of. Word of advice to the hotel.... Start catering to younger customers as they are your future. You have a beautiful hotel in gorgeous surroundings, change the blankets and bedspreads to duvets, re-vamp your menus and give good food for good value... People will eat there more than 1 night and will return or recommend to others. My only criticism with the bedroom was the showers head was fixed too low. My husband is 6' tall and couldn't stand under it. With the tea tray was 1 biscuit each. A sign started if I wanted another one I would have to go down to reception and ask. How embarrassing for customers. Has the penny pinching got so bad that they couldn't just put sealed packets of 3 biscuits?

We have just stayed at this beautiful hotel in fabulous surroundings with our dog and would definitely recommend it , it is in a lovely place and the rooms are clean and beds are comfortable but wouldn't recommend it if you have a dog! We were told when we booked It, there were rules for taking a dog but we felt like we were treated like servants, which was very degrading! We had to use the fire exit to get to our room and the only place we could sit with him in the hotel was at the entrance which was cold and uncomfortable! Apart from having breakfast we didn't eat at the hotel, nor did we have a drink there. We can't comment on the food as we didn't eat there, we were given a menu but nothing appealed to us as we don't like Guinea Fowl, Sea Bass or Salmon! There was a choice of 2 menus which both had similar choices on them. The previous reviews all state that the hotel is for older people and I would agree. We were looking forward to a lovely few days away with our dog and was disappointed as we felt we were not good to stay at this hotel.

The bar is well stocked with anything you might want, the wine list is extensive, and the restaurant is truly a gourmet experience!

Not seen at its best as we had two days of rain. However it is clear that the hotel is beautifully situated on Mawddach Estuary with extensive mature gardens and woodland. It is a country house hotel and it requires little imagination to see what an imposing family home it once was.Our room was comfortable with an impressive view of the garden. There are many quiet areas for guests to enjoy.Service is good. Staff were very professional and friendly. Will be returning.

The building and grounds are stunning. The entrance hall was truly welcoming with a roaring fire, beautifully decorated Christmas tree and subtle Christmassy fragrance. We paused for a moment to absorb the atmosphere. Delightful! We went to a small desk and rang the bell for attention and Faye appeared. A really bubbly helpful member of staff who gave us a guided tour and directed us to our room. The building was very beautifully decorated with great taste and style. The standard of decor was superb. Each reception room was stunning and decorated for Christmas. The first evening included a glass of bubbly and a 3 course evening meal. It was all very good. The staff were very helpful and were willing to go the 'extra mile', nothing was too much trouble. My husband was celebrating his birthday and the owners offered us a glass of bubbly on our second night stay. There were family photos around which made it feel more like being invited to a welcoming family home rather than the usual 'hotel'. We have stayed several times at Langar Hall in Nottinghamshire, the home of the late Imogen Skirving. Penmaenuchaf Hall had a similar ambiance. The bedroom and ensuite facilities were very comfortable with stunning views across the formal garden. The grounds were amazing with running streams, fabulous woodland, sweeping lawns, orchard complete with bee hives. Glorious!xx

During a short break here, the breakfast buffet had tinned grapefruit. A dinner entree one night consisted largely of curried rice. Minute veggie portions. One night was delicious food but for the prices, one expects consistency. Sagging mattress in our room. No duvets. No hand or bath soap or hospitality shampoo or conditioner, only soap and shampoo topped up daily in dispensers which one hopes they disinfect for new guests. Went to Tesco and bought our own toiletries. Family photos everywhere made one feel awkward. The hot breakfast isn't until 8.30 am on Sundays. We were checking out and had a long drive but were told and we could pay for it if wanted it earlier.

This was our first stop in Wales and given what we paid are expectations were high especially as this hotel has reportedly won awards. The only plus for us was the gardens which are beautiful but small. We found as we entered the hotel the hall very dark and unwelcoming with no one to greet us. After searching around we finally found someone who showed us to our room. We had what they claimed to be is a superior room. It appeared to be furnished from relatives hand me downs, especially with an extremely oversized glass coffee table which was totally inconsistent with the other furnishings. The liquid soaps in the ensuite were very dubious as to what they actually were and they borne no resemblance to the label on the bottles. The biscuits were very old and stale. We had to pay a 10 pound corkage to drink our own wine at dinner. They use canned fruit at breakfast. And we had to ask for a electric heater as the central heating was turned off and the room was cold. Throughout the hotel there are (inappropriate) framed family photos. This hotel is at least twice as expensive as it should be for what they are giving you. Plus their penny pinching ways are abhorrent at this value and level of accommodation. They may have been an award winning hotel 10-15 years ago but not in our opinion now!!!

The setting is lovely as you arrive but it all stops there !We arrived at 6.50 pm for a 7 pm booking . It was 7.50 when we shown to our table . There were only about 5 other couples dining . There was an abundance of waiters waiting around but there must have been problems in the kitchen as we waited ages and ages for the food to come .The wait detracted from the enjoyment of the food .In the end we did not bother with desert or coffee as we were so irritated at waiting so long for everything .The food was ok but nothing special for the price charged. We had another meal out elsewhere near Dolgellau and it was superb service and we had 3 courses and coffee and it was cheaper and the whole e perceive was 100% more enjoyable. This place caters for old couples ( as we are ) but it drove us mad . It was very irritating when they started laying the breakfast for the next day too - how rude !

We stayed here for 2 nights to celebrate my wife's birthday. The lady who took my telephone was very pleasant and went out of her way to fit us in on the required days and the hotel was lovely in superb surroundings,up graded bedroom was again lovely and clean and of a very good size. Our experience of the stay was disappointing in that we both felt that we were intruding in someone's family home and were tolerated rather than welcomed to the extent that it was uncomfortable having to press the reception buzzer to hand in or ask for room key.We did not dine on the evenings we were there but breakfast service was something of a farce and while the quality of the food was excellent it would have been nice to get the chance to eat it hot as by the time I had received the sauce I had asked for 3 times it was virtually uneatable. Its a shame that such a nice place was let down by a couple of things that could so easily have been avoided.

Visited this hotel for a second time and was not disappointed. It is in the beautiful setting of mid wales with loads of attractive place to visit, wand fantastic gardens to walk in. The actual buildings are also fabulous, beautifully appointed with lovely places to sit and read or think or just sit. The rooms are very nice, very comfortable and well equipped with everything you might need.Top of the attractions of this place is the service - the staff are very attentive and extremely helpful - sometimes almost to the point where you could feel a bit awkward, but not quite! The evening meals are great. The chef is obviously very skilled and the meals are tasty, well presented and there is a good choice each evening, and there was a lovely cream tea on arrival! If I have any criticism it is the breakfast provision for vegetarians - having informed the hotel in advance that we were 2 vegetarians and would appreciate a veggie breakfast we would have liked some note to have been taken of this. The cooked breakfast we were given was simply the full English without the meat - quite disappointing really, especially in the light of my previous comments about the wonderful chef/chefs. Even the hors d'oeuvres presented before the evening meal contained meat on the first evening of our stay - despite our advance notice. This hotel is next to perfect, but please just give a bit more attention to the dietary requirements of your guests, particularly when they have been submitted in advance. We will be back, we love the hotel and just find this one aspect of the hotel a bit disappointing. Please do try this place, you'll have a wonderful experience of great service, lovely meals and wonderful surroundings.

Again, the staff were very attentive to the point of taking the napkin out of its ring and placing it on our laps for us.The meal was excellent and yes it was a little pricey but for the quality, presentation and the surroundings it was worth every penny. We finished the evening sitting by a log fire having a glass of wine or two!I have no hesitation in recommending this hotel and would certainly stay again in the future

My wife and I were cordially invited with four good friends to attend for Sunday lunch recently. The weather was atrocious and the nearby Mawddach river (crossed by a wonderful wooden toll bridge) was running fast and high. The hall was approached by a long drive with the river running below. The hall itself is a wonderful Victorian mansion standing in 21acres of woodland and landscaped gardens, which in its heyday was the head of an estate covering thousands of acres including lakes, an Inn and the wooden toll bridge. On arrival, we were greeted courteously and shown into a welcoming side lounge with views over the garden unfortunately obscured by the weather. Drinks were ordered and soon forthcoming and our table beckoned after 20 minutes or so. We were shown into a delightful conservatory with tables adorned with a plethora of white lilies. The food itself was delightful and well presented. I must mention two firsts for me: forced meat stuffing wrapped in Savoy cabbage leaves pretending to be sausages to adorn lovely roast loin of pork and crisp crackling: and plum tart with a long mild aftertaste of black pepper. Delicious! Coffee and petit fours were served in the main lounge not out of place in Downton Abbey. The cost of all this; £21.95 each excluding coffee and drinks. If in the area at some time, don't sail past, sail in. Pleasure awaits.

My one regret was not arriving early so that I had time to walk around the beautiful gardens. The grand hotel is positioned high overlooking the enchanting Mawddach Estuary, near Dolgellau (10 mins from Fairbourne, 20 mins from Barmouth). Inside, we ordered a gin and tonic and perused menus in a grand but cosy drawing room in front of a fire. There was a very reasonable set menu, but we ordered a la carte, which was not very expensive compared to London and the South East of England. We were very impressed with the food. It was tasty and luxurious (one of the best jus I've tasted), but not as stingy on portions as some michelin establishments we have patronised. The menu was quite gamey, which suited our tastes, but some people may consider that the choices were limited. We ate in the light and airy conservatory, which provided a nice contrast to the drawing room. We had Duo of Duck to start (delicious - although I did need to request another slice of toasted brioche for the rillette), followed by a complimentary lobster veloute, then roast venison, with sufficient and tasty potatoes and vegetables and a velvety rich and sticky jus. For pudding, I found the chocolate tart a little too rich and (unlike me) could not finish it (although my husband did not have the same trouble), the mint sorbet it was served with was unusual and rather good (perhaps slightly sweet?). We took our coffee/tea and petit fours in the drawing room and were very reluctant to leave (and also had some trouble finding someone to ask for and then pay for the bill). Overall, I would really recommend this restaurant (and it looks like a lovely place to stay too). The food is very good, the service satisfactory, the ambiance warm, quiet and grand, and the setting beautiful. Well worth a visit.

We visited this hotel for a Sunday lunch ( Easter Sunday). We had visited on one previous occasion. Whilst the location and position of the hotel and the general ambiance cannot be faulted, the standard of the food served and the service provided leave much to be desired. The menu is limited - only 4 choices of starter, main course and dessert. The menu appears to be the same each time one visits with what appears to be little or no variation. One would expect a much greater choice and more variation for an establishment of this standing. The food was poorly cooked ( We had to return one of our meat dishes) roast beef as it was vastly undercooked. No apology was offered, and a message was relayed back to us by the management that we should have asked for it to have been more fully cooked! The other meat dishes were inadequately cooked although we did not return them. The vegetables also were bland and little variety provided. Very small portions of roast lamb with meagre vegetables. The desserts were distinctly average. The bread and butter pudding served with a mingy small teaspoonful of ice cream was ok but no more. My wife's dessert was still frozen and she had difficulty breaking it up to eat it!One got the feeling that this restaurant is focussed on maximising revenue with little interest in providing a good dining experience. The fine touches in sitting in the lounge beforehand and the 'personal service' when being led to the table and having serviettes put on your lap masquerade the real interest in the customer that seemed to cease after this point. We shall not be visiting this restaurant again as it represents poor value for money and a better meal could be had elsewhere at half the cost

Dont be fooled. A lovely hotel with an excellent chef but our recent travelzoo experience left a nasty taste in our mouths. afternoon tea is NOT afternoon tea but Welsh cream tea ie ONE scone and jam each, not even clotted cream but whipped cream instead. We booked for 4 but only 3 persons stayed and the management were intransigent about offering some compensation for the 4th meal/ afternoon tea etc. We were not expecting a refund but some compensation ie bottle of wine would have been a nice gesture. The set menu had NO choice - the choice if you did not like the courses was to upgrade by £25 per person to the a la carte menu. This is the first hotel of this rating that i have stayed in that does not offer a choice on table d'hote. These faults spoilt the stay for us all and we will not return.

We stumbled on this restaurant purely by chance but ended up having a lovely evening. Canapes and drinks are served in a beautiful lounge while you browse the menu. You are then escorted into the dining room which overlooks the gardens where 2 waitresses stand by your chairs and seat you. The food was beautiful and served delightfully by the professional but friendly staff. Afterwards we enjoyed tea and brandy back in the lounge chatting to other guests. What a lovely evening. My only negative comment is that the menu is set price (£42.50 I think)but then lots of the choices have a supplement. It would be better to charge say £49.50 and do away with that bit, it just made it look a bit tacky.

From the moment of walking through the doors of this hotel and admiring the gardens, until reluctantly leaving after our meal , the visit (not our first) was an experience that is hard to find in any other restaurant in this area. Pre dinner drinks , served in a most beautiful period lounge by the real log fire, were accompanied by canapes (do try the parmesan crisps), the menu's were varied and mouthwatering, and the service exemplary . The restaurant is beautifully decorated but all was eclipsed by the standard of the food, all cooked freshly on the premises. Followed by coffee again served in the lounge, made us wish we were staying overnight. The extensive wine list offers a range to suit all palates, and is complimented by an excellent range of liqueurs. Other , perhaps more well known restaurants in North wales, could learn so much from this wonderful hotel.
