Russell's Restaurant in Highland

We didn’t have a booking but the restaurant fitted us in which we really appreciated. We were not disappointed the food was exceptional and so was the service. The menu is small, but perfect. We all ordered a different main course and none of us were disappointed. I have a starter again, beautiful and the rest of the party a dessert again fantastic. The complimentary soup was a nice touch too. It was the first evening of our stay and it could not have been any better. A really great restaurant. Thank you.

We have been eating at The Smiddy for many years and are never disappointed, this week was no exception. We were made welcome and were very well looked after by Robert, as always, and Marie, and our meals were sublime, congratulations to Glen and his team! It was all so good - the tasty carrot and ginger ‘amuse bouchée’; delicious starters of asparagus with poached egg, and goat’s cheese and beetroot terrine, with homemade bread; our perfect fillet steaks; and to die for pineapple and ginger puddings with lashings of caramel sauce and fab ice cream. The little melt in the mouth cheese and nut shortbreads which came with our drinks in the comfortable sitting room before our meal were delicious too! As always, a sublime dinner - thanks so much, and looking forward to next time!

Stunning! From ambience and welcome right at start Russell’s kept on being great. Wee touches like the small cup of pea, broccolli and Parmesan soup as an appetiser alongside fabulous service. Starter of risotto with goats cheese amazing and just right balance, not too much/too heavy. We had venison and steak for main both of which cooked perfectly. Good wine selection-took photo of the red wine in hope I can find it again.

We stayed at the Spean Lodge the same night and this place was recommended to us by the owners of the Spean Lodge. How lucky were we to take up there suggestion. Its not often i get BLOWN AWAY by food as FOOD/COOKING as food/cooking is my passion but the Scallop starter is quite literally one of the most greatest meals I've have ever eaten. The Steak i had for mains while it was cooked to perfection was not so good the taste just wasn't there for me, Chips etc were excellent. Wine list and service were also magnificent. Dont know what it is about this area but they certainly know how to pick they're wine. Starter- 10/10, Mains- 7/10, Wine- 10/10, Service 10/10. On a wee footnote my Wife had the Lamb for mains and that was superb so 9.5/10 for that. Highly Recommended

We were desperate to find somewhere to eat and were very kindly fitted in at 6 p.m. They were extremely short-staffed due to a local Covid outbreak and not wanting to use their usual staff for fear of infecting customers, but you wouldn't have known from the standard of welcome and food we received. The proprietor could not have been more helpful and even printed out my ferry tickets for me after I mentioned I'd left mine at home and was worried we would be refused entry to the ferry next day. Certainly service well above and beyond. And that's before I even mention the food, which was consistently excellent and overall extremely good value for what we paid.

My partner and I was spending a walking holiday in the highlands and if there was one restaurant I would say is a must it would be this one. The decor is lovely and inviting, the staff friendly, courteous and very considerate. The food was amazing, it was so thoughtfully put together with the flavours, they just worked so well. My partner started with the chicken liver pate, she said the presentation and taste far exceeded her expectations. I started with the scollops, they were fresh, cooked perfectly and the sauce they came with was nothing short of taste sensation. We both opted for the venison main and I’m glad we did, the meat was cooked to perfection (medium rear), the veggies had been sautéed in flavours and the presentation was Michelin star quality. We finished this meal off with a chocolate torte, although I was full from the first two courses I couldn’t stop eating this amazing food. With the great location, service and food it was the full package. This restaurant on its own is a good reason to visit Scotland, it made the eight hour drive worth it. Very COVID friendly restaurant.

Despite staffing pressure, our host found us a table and gave us a warm welcome - service was excellent as they don't take more customers than they can serve well. The pre-dinner cocktail in the lounge was lovely, the amuse-bouche and everything was tasty and well presented. Many thanks to our friendly and attentive host and skilled chef!

Booked Afternoon Tea recently, our first time proved to be one of our best decisions. Upon entry we were greeted by Robert and throughout given the VIP personal touch, he is undeniably at the top of his game, everything was clearly freshly baked and delicious, those items uneaten at the venue were boxed for later and devoured at our leisure. 5 stars for 'value for money' Should the opportunity arise in the future we would definitely return.

We stayed one night at Smiddy House and ate in their Russell’s Restaurant. We are so glad that we did as the food, service, wine choice were simply excellent. Really accomplished cooking from a delightful menu covering every taste. Their primitivo wine was divine. Very reasonably priced and the restaurant is deserving of their 2 AA rosette

We were staying locally, and Russell's was recommended by our hosts. There was clearly some nervousness, because it was so soon after lifting of Covid restrictions, but the proprietors had prepared well, and we enjoyed a lovely evening – in spite of a pompous prat in a kilt, who tried to insinuate that we were invading his personal space by being in Scotland. Turned out he was an English surgeon from Inverness, 80 miles away! The food was great, too.

Russell's was highly recommended and our delicious dinner, served so capably under difficult conditions, did not disappoint. Robert has created a perfect combination of country house style and imaginative cuisine - most welcome at the end of a long day.

We had a meal in Russell’s last night and it was fabulous. Staff very friendly and welcoming even though we were late !!! Food was outstanding, we had scallops, mussels, veal and beef short ribs and it was delicious. I thoroughly recommend the Portuguese white wine as it was lovely. A real fine dining treat after many a pub lunch on our travels. Will definitely be returning.

Outstanding service from start to finish at Russell’s. Front of house staff were polite and attentive. Once they were informed that a member of our group had wheat and dairy allergies they made sure that the kitchen were aware and came back to tell us what dishes were suitable and what ones could be amended to suit. The chef even made up a dessert that could be eaten! You had 100% confidence that the team knew exactly what they were doing and that food would be safe to eat. Would highly recommend to anyone looking for food near Fort William and especially for people suffering with allergies and intolerances.

We had the Valentine’s Day set menu. Scallops starter for me was perfection on a plate. Melt in the mouth. My husbands venison starter was also cooked to perfection. My sole with crab stuffing was exactly as I like fish cooked. The other main of beef en croute was amazing. We had a little wait for the mains but this was remedied by drinks on the house. We were in no hurry so it gave us time to work up our appetite for them. Although the portions don’t look big when they arrive, together they fill you up and with no space for desert, my husband declined but I had a rhubarb and ginger custard tart which was delicious. We had a lovely evening where the food, ambience and service was second to none. Thank you to chef and front of house.

We had reservations for an early dinner and were seated with other guests in a receiving room where we were served drinks. After a quiet chat, we were moved into the dining room (probably the parlour in olden days) for a fantastic meal. The setting was quite elegant but informal at the same time. Find dining at a casual pace. Excellent experience!

What a find, fantastic food and excellent host with great anecdotes! Great value for highest quality cuisine and good wine selection.

Meestal is reserveren in deze zaak nodig, zelfs als het restaurant niet vol zit staat er buiten een bord dat "full" en kan je niet meer binnen. De zaak is leuk ingericht en heel gezellig maar bevind zich in een duurdere klasse. Via het onthaal neem je plaats in de lounge om rustig het menu te bekijken en ondertussen een aperitief te bestellen en te nuttigen. Na de bestelling (2 gangen of 3 gangen naar keuze) blijf je in de lounge zitten tot het 1ste gerecht klaar is en wordt je opgehaald om naar je tafel gebracht te worden. De keuze is dus uiteraard beperkt tot een aantal verschillende gerechten in voor- en hoofdgerecht en dessert. Zowel voor- als hoofdgerecht waren heel lekker en prima klaar gemaakt, mooi gepresenteerd ook. Zij hebben ook een heel uitgebreide wijnkaart. Het is dus meer een Europees soort restaurant maar met Schotse gerechten. Goed voor zijn prijs.

Staying elsewhere in Spean Bridge this restaurant was recommended to us - and rightly so. Our host, Robert, made us very welcome and though we were not staying at the hotel gave us some excellent advice on places to see in the area. Dinner was superb. The Cullen skink was smooth and creamy but with small pieces of fish that just melted in the mouth. My main course was halibut served with a crab risotto and tender broccoli - superb combination of flavors, and fish which was so fresh and delicious. Dessert was chocolate with a raspberry couli. Honestly, we could not fault our experience in any way and would come back time and time again were we living in the area. Our congratulations to Robert, to the chef and to the staff. A great experience.

Very competent cooking, with delicious food. Not a cheap option, but well worth it. Serving staff were friendly and attentive. Interesting wine list. Only very minor criticism would be that the overall atmosphere of the place is quite formal - a bit like going back 20 years or so. You need to book - as far in advance as you are able to do so, to stand a chance of a decent table time - we could only get in at 6.30 on a Saturday night, having booked more than a week before. Ironically the place never seemed to get full, despite being told that it was fully booked - possibly kitchen capacity issues? It is currently up for sale, so hopefully any new owners can hang onto the chef.

Well prepared and tasty ingredients and great service by Robert and the rest of the friendly staff. The reservation was easy to make. The restaurent is cozy and the menu is creative and generous. Worth coming to.

Car c'est sans conteste , la meilleure adresse que nous ayons testée en 2 semaines d'un petit tour d'ecosse . Le menu à 40£ avec dessert est certes un peu plus cher qu'ailleurs, mais tout est parfaitement maîtrisé . Tous les produits sont frais, locaux et cuisinés sur place . Décoration raffinée , service attentionné et pas obséquieux. Vins bien choisis . 2 très belles soirées !

Our B&B; host recommended Russell's (located at Smiddy House, also a guest house), just near the bridge in Spean Bridge, Highlands (a half hour drive from Fort William), and he made us a reservation. We're so glad he did. For one thing, all the reservations were booked for a Friday night (and I'm sure they are booked solid all summer). The service was outstanding. The decor, elegant. The food, out of this world! It's at the higher end, price wise, and well worth every pound sterling. We didn't feel that the owners or staff were "snooty" and in fact we felt free to be ourselves, which means we oohed and ahhed quite a bit over our tasty meals. (Not quite as bad as Bill Murray's portrayal of Bob in "What about Bob?" but we could have been that over the top. This will go down as THE best meal we've had on our entire Scottish adventure. We highly recommend it and we highly recommend booking a reservation a couple of weeks in advance. 6 stars out of 5 in our opinion.

Having been touring the coast of Scotland we stopped here en route home, what an amazing hotel! The room was beautifully decorated and sooooooo clean :)

This restaurant is part of the Smiddy House. If you're looking for informal it's not for you. Robert our host was very professional and welcoming and he loves his Laura Ashley ! We had starters of Cullen Skink and Carrot and Corriander soup followed by Steak and chips (chips weren't up to much) and a salmon dish which was perfect. Dessert was to die for and beautifully presented, Chocolate and raspberries with crunchy layers . All staff were fabulous I have to say. Not cheap but good food. 3 courses £40.00 pp. Total bill was just over £100.00 for 2

We are so pleased that we happened upon this little gem of a restaurant. Such was our positive experience, we felt compelled to post our review right away having only just returned from our visit this evening. We were told by our Air BnB host to ring ahead and were glad to be accommodated at relatively short notice. When we arrived we were welcomed by the friendly front of house staff who guided us to the lounge area where we had a drink and decided on our food choices. We felt instantly relaxed in the cosy surroundings and were impressed by the staff who were down to earth, professional and struck the perfect balance between being attentive vs giving time and space for us to consider the menu at our own pace. The menu was varied and offered the chance to experience local seasonal produce at its finest. The food was absolutelty delicious and left us yearning for a second visit. I had the veal which was perfectly cooked and accompanied by unexpected but perfect flavours. My partner had the John Dory which he says was divine. In addition to the delicious food, our experience was made by the extra “little touches” - the plump fresh raspberries in the raspberry gin, the candlelight, the homemade tomato and basil rolls, the complimentary “wee taste of the kitchen” dish between the starter and the main and perhaps most importantly, the sense of time and relaxation and the feeling that we were not being rushed. We would definitely recommend to anyone visiting the area and look forward to returning again someday soon. Thank you!!!

We visited Russell’s on Friday 5th July and had another excellent stay. As usual the owners were both on hand and the ambience and quality of food was up to the usual high standards. I was a little surprised to read a review saying that the owners weren’t there as it is my understanding that they are always there. Were the guests at another restaurant?

We looked so much forward to our visit here, not least after reading all the glowing reviews. Firstly, we were meet by two women, one of them almost barking at us, then, as they discovered we had booked a table, brought us to the lounge. The rest of the time, they run around, not in control and also sharing their experiences between themselves, but in full view of the customers. Secondly, the food was ok, nothing more. The compositions did not work, the mains were overdone, both my cod and my husbands' duck. We decided this must have been one of those days. Something our landlord confirmed upon hearing about it. He said it did not sound like the place it usually is. So my advice is that you check if the owners are there for the time you book.

The food was amazing and couldnt fault the service. Robert is the perfect host. Very cosy setting would definately recommend eating here. We visited with my partner's aunt and uncle who regularly eat here. I can see why. The glasses for the gin were out of this world!

We ate here while staying at the Smiddy House. Our starters were all very good, but the Cullen skink was our favorite. My venison was delicious and perfectly cooked, but sliced too thick so as to be tough. My wife’s lamb was not particularly good. All the fish dishes (monkfish, scallops, salmon) were all very good. We liked our Pavlova dessert the best. Service was very good, although a little stretched at the end due to other diner's demands.

We had an excellent three-course dinner. Though it is a short menu, there was a good vegetarian option. The starters and especially the puddings are wonderful.

We found this lovely restaurant by accident when overnighting in Spean Bridge. Fabulous food, great service and wonderful ambience. The Halibut dish was to die for. Would highly recommend.

This is a very relaxed and feel good space to enjoy your evening. The lounge is a good place to start, an aperitif and look over the menu. The head writer or owner was very keen to please and help you. Our scallop starters were excellent and very tasty. The mains were mixed my wife’s was ok, but my lamb was over cooked and dry, a big disappointment. We still rated them a 4, because overall the service and effort put in to your experience was to be applauded. I think the chef believes he is a Michelin star candidate, some way to go yet I’m afraid.

We ate at Russell’s while staying overnight on a visit to the area. The food was well presented and was excellent quality provided by Greg in the Kitchen. You can go to some very high priced places to eat food as good as this. All served up by Robert who is a great host. Overall a great experience and we would love to return. Very reasonably priced wine and drinks.

We had a lovely afternoon tea at Russell’s Bistro. Very responsible price for the quality of food. Owner made us feel very welcome and said we held the record for the longest afternoon tea he’s ever had! Prosecco is the nicest I’ve ever tasted. Would highly recommend to anyone wishing a very relaxing day out!

it is always a real joy and treat to dine at Russells at The Smiddy House. Robert is an excellent host and Glen a very talented chef.The menu always has a good choice to suit all tastes and the vegetarian menus is superb. Our starters of Cullen Skink soup and asparagus with crispy poached egg were truly delicious.We also tried both vegetarian dishes and they were really tasty especially the fennel. The steaks were also beautifully cooked to perfection. The chosen dessert of rhubarb meringue roulade with sorbet was sublime. Russells has a lovely relaxed atmosphere and great waiting staff in Helen and Ellie.Strongly recommended. Bon apetit.

Initially seated for drinks while waiting for a table - they take your order and have food on way by the time you get seated in this small establishment at Smiddy House. But so worth it - every food selection was locally sourced and outstandingly fresh. Seafood choices were awesome - service was attentive - friendly and helpful. Loved everything about this experience - be sure to check it out if ever up in this area!

We walked into the Smirhy and Russels due to the road being closed to Invermoriston. The atmosphere was lovely and welcoming; the owners amazingly friendly and helpful.The food was a complete highlight and was wonderful. We would highly recommend this restaurant

This is our 4th visit to Russell’s and definitely not our last! From the moment you open the door, you are greeted (usually by Robert) in a warm and welcoming manner. You are then seated in the lounge where your drinks are served and you can make your choice of food in a relaxed and casual way. Your are the shown to your table, sit down and enjoy what I promise will be a fine dining experience, whatever you choose.

Our daughter and son-in-law took us here who have been here many times. We were very impressed, décor is beautiful, food amazing yet it still manages to keep a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. we would not hesitate to come back here. The only negative thing is that Russell's is 500 miles from where I live.

Everything was fantastic. In particular the Cullen Skink was the best soup we have ever had. Other starters were equally good. The PE teacher said his steak was good meat. The octogenarian thought the venison was fantastic. Hope to come back again.

Russell's is an attractive and somewhat formal restaurant. Our host, Robert, is anything but formal. He is witty, charming, occasionally outrageous, and very entertaining. But he is very good as host, and made sure we had an enjoyable evening. The food at Russell's is traditional, beef, venison, duck, halibut, well-prepared and served. Very good wine list.

Been there for few breakfasts and dinner as we stay at SMiddy House. Food is amazing cooked to order, really nice fish, and few more Scotish dishes worth trying. Nice atmosphere it cuold be a bit noise when is crowded over a weekend but understandable. Drinks are nice but it was too much alcohol in them.

Found this restaurant well reviewed on TA, booked ahead and were not disappointed. This restaurant harkens back to the service you got in restaurants 20 years ago: friendly, classy and incredibly special. The food was beautifully presented and of a high quality showcasing local produce. It was a wonderful dining experience in a small Scottish town.

Restaurant has many awards. Food there is terrific and service is excellent. So good to find a reliable and friendly first class restaurant instead of all shabby tourist ones. All our meals were excellent. Maybe a trifle dear but hey, you pay for what you get

We luckily happened to stop in early for reservations after another place was not yet open. We were fortunate as the food and service was first rate — the best we’ve had during two weeks of traveling in Scotland. Nearly all dishes were excellent and well presented.

Had a fabulous meal and experience at the restaurant last night, as a treat from my work colleagues for my 60th birthday this year. My wife and I visited on our train and walking trip in Scotland. It may be an unfair comparison but Russell’s, while very good, lacked the flair and special exquisiteness of local produce dishes from some of our other restaurants. A very good but not great eating experience

Spean Bridge is a tiny village, but it has an outstanding restaurant. Russell's tables are spread around several rooms, which makes for an intimate experience. The table settings are elegant, and the food and service are excellent.

We ate dinner and breakfast here as part of our stay at the outstanding Smiddy House. Every aspect of the meals was perfect- fresh food beautifully presented by a caring and considerate host. Absolute perfection!

We have been visiting this restaurant for many years on our holidays in Scotland. It was initially recommended by the owners of the Guest House in which we were staying. It is warm and welcoming to start with by Robert - front of house- and all of the staff. The food is amazing .and whatever dish you choose is always cooked superbly and there is always a lovely menu choice. The greatest thing about this restaurant is that it is always consistent so that you can safely recommend it to anyone. We miss the restaurant enormously when we return home to Yorkshire. Roll on next year!

To be honest we didn't expect a fine dining in that tiny little village but this restaurant was really very very good.

We have visited Here for the past 5 yrs when we stay at Spean Bridge area, normally minimum twice a year, sometimes three times depending on our holidays

Had dinner there last night. Our host, Robert, was a delight. Very attentive and great sense of humor. Even if the food had not been great, the experience would have been. The restaurant itself is very nice. You start in a sitting room where you have a drink and order dinner. You then proceed to the dining room. It was spacious and quite. The food was excellent. I had an appetizer with avocado ice cream - very tasty. It is about a 10 mile and 15 minute drive from Ft. William.

Had an overnight in area and were recommended one of the best place's to eat. It was absolutely fabulous. The food was delicious with a very relaxed atmosphere. The staff were very attentive with a polite and caring manner. Its a restaurant that we would go back to in the future. Robert who is the part owner is very hands on making sure the customer is happy and comfortable. And the other owner who is the chef deserves recognition for his delicious food. All round it was a great experience and we will return in the future. You must book if you are in the area.

Should have been the last dinner - as a highlight- before leaving Scotland and made an enquiry on the official website...til today ( about a week later) ...no response .

Visited with my wife on Friday evening after managing to get a table last minute. We had a lovely meal which was cooked to order, beautifully presented and tasted delicious. The owner Robert was very welcoming and the staff very efficient and attentive. We were fortunate to attend once again on Saturday with a wedding party and again the service was exemplary and food wonderful. The restaurant was the perfect location for a small and intimate celebration and Robert and his staff helped make the occasion special and memorable.

Such a delicious meal and very well catered for for our coeliac son. Attention to detail was spot on. Delicious food, lovely location. Thanks to all the staff for a lovely evening!

Everything about my meal tonight convinced me it was the best place I'd been to, in Scotland, so far. From the beautiful dry martini to the dessert, and the servers and proprietors. But at the end of the night, the owners (I think?) of the restaurant and some visitors from the Netherlands were deep in conversation that was so loud, it was impossible to pay attention to anything else. It took them ages to realize we were still there, or to get us our bill. It's a shame that a fabulous meal and experience was reduced to a feeling that not being from the Netherlands or somewhere as interesting impacted our service.

The welcome at Russells is very friendly indeed. All the staff were very good. We had a wine & a beer in the lounge area where we ordered from the menu. We were then seated in a small room off the lounge which was very hot. Scotland is not used to very warm weather so of course there is no air con.

Would recommend this restaurant to anyone visiting the area.

We visited while on holiday on the Caledonian Canal. From initial reservations through to the evening itself all staff members were friendly, pleasant and helpful. We arrived and were shown into the lounge for a drink and time to choose our meal. Our starters were delicious - a trio of fish / scallops all beautifully cooked. Our main courses were all lovely and desserts were sublime. And we found the meal was very good value. We were not disappointed and would highly recommend.

Dank der Reservation durch unseren Gastgeber bekamen wir an diesem Abend noch einen Tisch im Restaurant, was wir keineswegs bereut haben. Das Restaurant verteilt sich auf zwei Räume sowie einen Loungebereich, in dem man vorweg einen Drink zu suchen nehmen und die Speisekarte studieren kann. Die Auswahl ist sehr schön, sprengt beim Fisch allerdings den weitestgehend üblichen Rahmen nicht. Aber die Zubereitung ist sehr lecker und schön angerichtet. Die Preise sind im oberen Bereich, aber bei der Qualität und der Professionalität im Service durchaus angebracht.

This rare gem was recommended to me, and I was not disappointed. The staff were exemplary in their service and the food was sublime in its flavours and subtly combined ingredients. As a solo diner I was made very welcome and my need for gluten free dining easily catered for.

This restaurant was recommended to us and it was a real treat. Thank you to Robert and his staff for an amazing meal and wonderful service.

Pour clôturer notre séjour en Ecosse, nous avons décidé de passer la dernière soirée au Russel's. Quelle magnifique adresse. Cadre 'cosy', accueil sympathique, carte privilégiant les produits locaux (dont les poissons). Préparations parfaites et présentation originale. Habitués de l'Ecosse, il s'agit là du genre de restaurant que l'on ne rencontre pas souvent dans les petits villages ! A recommander sans hésitation mais attention : il est essentiel de réserver !
