Food fabulous 👌 Service not so good 😒

Lovely! Went for our annual Birthday taster menu and it was great as always. Got to try a few things we'd never had before. A few items were quite salty which was such a shame but the puddings as always were th best part!

This is a great place - our third visit on a day out on the X17 from Sheffield (first trip was to celebrate first use of a bus pass). The food is excellent for us all - especially for the vegetarian in our party who isn’t offered ‘vegetarian option’ but has a separate menu and choice. The food is beautifully presented and we love the little canapés and amuse-bouches and bread all of which are little extras. Can’t wait for our next visit.

We’ve just had the most wonderful lunch here. We had the tasting menu but I strongly suspect the main menu is just as delicious. We are on holiday in nearby Elton so have booked in for next week as well before leaving. Service was first class and the restaurant had a great atmosphere.

Fri 22nd March visited for the 5-course tasting lunch paired with wines and what an excellent lunch it was!! Service and staff were brilliant but the food (presentation and taste) was incredible! My husband and I booked an annual leave day, travelled by train to Matlock and cant wait to go back! Thank you Stones for delicious food, in a beautiful setting, served by wonderful staff! We will be booking again soon

Having visited regularly for Mother’s Day a number of years ago, we had not managed to visit for a number of years but having lost Mum in March 2022 we decided to make the effort to return. We were thrilled to find that nothing had changed. Kevin’s food is exceptional, the atmosphere relaxed and the service is excellent. While I am usually not someone to try new things I have no qualms about trying anything that Kevin cooks and have not found anything, so far, that I have not enjoyed. Highly recommended for a romantic meal for two or a special family occasion. Kevin and Jade are awesome and never fail to provide an excellent experience.

Full disclosure we are regular diners at Stones but we had a new waitress tonight and she was excellent. The food was up to the usual high standard especially the pigs cheek starter and beef main which were outstanding. Thanks for another fab evening x

Amazing experience. Food and service 10/10 🤗 The ‘ surprise’ extras made the occasion special . Yes more expensive than average but a special place. Obviously highly thought of as fully booked for months ( Saturday eves )

My husband and I went to stones to celebrate our 45th wedding anniversary . The service was superb and the the food was outstanding,would definitely recommend.

Beautiful restaurant, lovely staff and incredible food. We went for the eight course tasting menu and they allowed us to share the wine flight between my wife and myself rather than having to pay for one each. They brought out four different canapés for us to try before we even looked at the food menu which we very much enjoyed. Every wine and dish is explained in detail by the waitress and I cannot stress enough how refined and balance everything was. We ordered cocktails afterwards and they came with three homemade chocolate truffles each which were such a lovely touch to finish off. To concluded - very expensive compared to your average restaurant but you get what you pay for. 10/10 will definitely return & definitely recommend.

The food is fabulous at Stones, that is without a shadow of a doubt. we have been a few times and always been exceptional. The SERVICE however is not! No bread deliveres, forgotten about and had to ask after about 20 minutes. Ignored for most of the meal, staff looked like they couldn't wait to go home. People came in who they knew, so they were served first and chatted to whilst we are still eaiting for bread and drinks. Husband said her would never return. Food is divine, service is shocking. I suggest people read the other poor reviews and you can see a trend about the service.

Absolutely fabulous meal as always! The canapés and celeriac cream Amuse Bouche were delicious, as was the whole meal. Such a lovely afternoon treat!

The food here was excellent and at a reasonable price. We had 3 course menu rather than the taster menu. Can highly recommend. The amuse bouche was a really nice touch.

What a great little restaurant. Following a recommendation we tried Stones at the end of a day out & we weren't disappointed. Friendly, polite, attentive & professional service in a lovely, cosy setting. The food was of amazing quality at a very reasonable price. Without doubt we'll be back!

Came for my wife's birthday on a surprise trip to the peak district. We knew we were going for the 8 course taster. But after canapés, a small bowl of soup and bread had come out before we saw a menu we worried we had made a mistake with 8 courses to go that we wouldn't be able to go the distance. But we persevered. All courses were delicious. The scallop and monkfish dishes being our favorites. Also the horseradish and chive butter with the bread was a big hit. While being full and happy I didn't need a wheelbarrow to transport us back to the car so portion sizes were just right. Staff were great and we had a wonderful time. Only regret was that I didn't lick the lemon posset bowl, but my wife advised me against it as we still had other guests sat next to us.

Food was very tasty, perhaps too salty but that's personal choice.Excellent canapés. Staff were lovely, very professional and everything happened smoothly.

A simply outstanding meal. We went for the a la carte dinner and from the canapés right through to the end of the meal every mouthful brought a new sensation. If going out is an occasional treat for you, make sure you treat yourself to Stone's. This is now firmly in my top 3 best restaurants I have ever visited - and that's a very long list!

This was our first visit to Stones and we loved it. We had the tasting menu (one veggie, one ‘normal’) and they were both delicious as were the little extras. Our server was very friendly and attentive. We had to dash off, but this was no problem and the staff kindly sent us home with some chocolates. Highly recommend!

Another superb meal! Took my mum for the first time as a treat for Mother’s Day, she said it was the best meal she’d ever had!

Lovely lunch at Stones. Food and service perfect. It is not difficult to see why it is not easy to obtain a booking at this restaurant. You have to book a few weeks ahead and be flexible with your dates times etc. But it is worth the wait in my opinion.

The food is sublime with subtle nuances of taste that always continue to surprise, titillate, and amaze. The staff are courteous, charming and friendly and their attentive service is perfectly timed. I’m struggling to find the words to impress upon any prospective clients, how simply amazing this establishment is. We’ve dined at the restaurants of Tommy Banks, Raymond Blanc, Simon Rogan and Gordon Ramsay, and in our opinion Stones would certainly rate higher than some of these chefs. Amazing food, amazing staff, beautiful restaurant, small, intimate and delightful, and incredible value for money.

A wonderful restaurant where the food and drinks are of very high quality. Obviously that comes at a price but in my opinion worth every penny. Staff are attentive and friendly but in no way intrusive. Get in quick this has to get a Michelin star very soon. I don't understand why it hasn't already.

We enjoyed every minute of the experience from the warm welcome on arrival, through the delights of each culinary treat from the delicious canapés and amuse bouche as additional treats, the outstanding dishes served through each course to the petit fours. The local ingredients are skilfully crafted into superb dishes. The service was excellent too, well paced and attentive. We are so looking forward to our next treat already and wholeheartedly recommend Stones, a delight not to be missed.

Was expecting a lovely evening and a A ‘LA CARTE special experience Well from start to finish , Matlock is an amazing place , arrived at Stones really excited, walked into entrance to find a small waiting area then taken through to a table literally round the side to what we thought would be the restaurant area , only to see what looked like someone’s back room in a normal house, couldn’t believe how small the dining area was , in fact I wouldn’t even class it as a dining area . we immediately felt uncomfortable, but gave it a try . Unfortunately for us the food was not at all what we would considered, an A ‘LA CARTE menu , sorry to say but the food was disappointing, taste less to a point of wounding how Stone’s (can be classed as an A ‘LA CARTE restaurant) . can’t actually understand how they get away with charging what they do for the tasteless food that they serve . its not by any means about the money it self at all , but unfortunately will not be recommended this place or the food at all .

Third time at Stones and this lovely little restaurant has become my favourite local place to eat, especially for a special occasion. Beautifully cooked and presented food, interesting menus, lovely staff, great decor,ambiance and not outrageously expensive. What’s not to love?

We love going to Stones, the food is always on point and service is top draw. The restaurant is quiet and great for romantic meals. It is somewhere we will back to again.

We were delighted to get in at short notice and had a lovely evening. We were very tempted by the eight course taster menu but went for the à la carte starters and mains instead and it was the perfect amount of food along with the delicious canapés and amuse bouche. The staff were lovely and friendly and exactly the right amount of attentive. The stone steps down to the door are steep so if people struggle with their mobility it is worth making sure you can manage them before you commit

Nothing else to say but excellent. Our first time there was a Christmas gift and a great one it turned out to be. Very relaxed very friendly the staff were smiley. The food was very tasty and service was great. Overall it's a place to go for an occasion but saying that we would definitely go again.

We had the remarkable 5 course tasting menu today which, we all agreed, was as good as it gets. In addition there were really tasty amuse-bouche before the meal and in between some courses, and the whole meal was finished off with homemade chocolates. The staff were really pleasant, the decor was really pleasant, and the seating was comfortable. Each course was a masterpiece of taste and texture. Each course wasn't huge, but the meal as a whole was perfectly balanced and left everyone completely satisfied. On top of that it was superb value for money. In addition, in the warmer months, there is attractive outside seating with lovely views. A little gem - just sorry it isn't nearer to where we live, as it would be on the calendar regularly if it was.

Decided to bring my beau here for a birthday lunch, I took the day off work (Wednesday) so it was a treat all round. We had a lovely friendly welcome & were seated in the main dining room. A bit gutted we weren’t in the conservatory with the views of the Derwent river but something I shall try & request next time perhaps. We chose to have the 5 course tasting lunch, which was very good. We shared the wine pairing as were both driving much later that day. I loved all of the courses, the bread was yummy but I couldn’t eat it all as didn’t want to ruin my appetite. I was a bit dubious about the potato veloute & then really enjoyed it. Following dessert a food & be weave assistant brought out a lovely birthday plate with some truffles & ‘happy birthday’ written in chocolate, Very thoughtful. Overall the food, drinks & service were amazing!

We have been to Stones a number of times and each time it is simply amazing. The food is delicious with bold and well thought out combinations. The service and ambiance is excellent, throughly enjoyable.

So pleased to find this perfect restaurant. We had the 5 course taster menu. What an amazing taste experience. Small, handcrafted dishes, perfect. A delight on the tongue. Also amuse bouche inbetween courses. Incredible value. The service was second to none. Treated like royalty. Each dish explained by the lovely waitresses. We will be back.

Absolutely tremendous meal. Wonderful EVERYTHING! Probably the best meal I've had in living memory, and incredible value for the quality of the overall eating experience. A restaurant that you must go to at least once in your life - but I guarantee it will become a regular watering hole if you DO try it!

It has been a number of years since we visited Stones but, as we expected, the whole experience was as exceptional as ever. This is the one place we try new things which we would never try anywhere else. Kevin’s food is exceptional. Excellent food, excellent service and a very relaxed and friendly at atmosphere.
