A family favourite dining venue for literally decades, it’s a cast iron classic for a laid back leisurely lunch. Quite an expansive menu covering all the classics you’d expect of a decent hotel and pub. Lovely personal service and a warm and cosy bar with a real wood fire. Not a fan of the slightly more formal dining room and there is no step free access but it’s nice, reliable and doesn’t get crazy busy or noisy.

My husband and I booked the chestnuts private dining room for our wedding dinner. We were in correspondence with Susie a few weeks prior to confirm details and she was absolutely fantastic and put us so at ease while also offering some great insights/ideas we hadn't even thought of! The food was delightful and everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves. I am vegetarian and there were plenty of options to choose from, the goats cheese salad was a real treat! We dropped in decorations the night before and Susie and the team kindly set the room up for us perfectly for our arrival. The staff were polite and attentive while also giving us space to enjoy our evening of celebrations. We cannot recommend the Chestnuts enough for a special occasion, you made our wedding day so wonderful - thank you!

Went here for dinner last night after it being recommended locally It was outstanding Had food in the bar which had a lovely open fire and despite being full wasn't really noisy, just a nice relaxing atmosphere I had pate to start which was beautiful My sons had fish and chips and burger, hadn't realised the burger was home made to be fair which didn't go down well for a fussy 7 year old but he had enough I couldn't manage a desert but they had some and my son has been saving about his meal since Wish I had found it earlier in the week, outstanding! Staff all lovely and quick service despite being busy

Never disappoints! It's kind of like my local! Most celebrations are here. This time was my daughter's birthday 🎂 Grant and his staff are always very friendly and helpful. No being rushed. Food is always delicious. Warm and very inviting. Superb time

These are strange and difficult times, more so for anyone running a business such as The Chestnuts and yet we were met at the door and welcomed back as old friends . Due to lockdown it's been 11 months since our last family visit and we've missed it so much. Everyone at The Chestnuts takes such good care of us and of course makes sure that all the necessary social distancing and safeguarding is followed to the letter. It's very comforting. Being lunch-time we had a small meal of one course but what we had was prepared beautifully and served piping hot. It was so good to be back. I hope we can return again soon for more family celebrations (Covid permitting). I can't recommend this place highly enough. Thank you Chestnuts!!

Grant and his staff simply could not have done more to make the place Covid safe and to maintain their fantastically high standards of service and food. This hotel/restaurant has been a favourite for many years with very good reason. The ambience and food are great. Menu selection is extensive. Well set up for social distancing. Staff are very friendly and efficient.

A lovely space with typical pub menu lots of choice. Really friendly staff and a great experience overall. We were there at 6 ish and lots of people in beer garden so we ate inside but all really well socially distanced. Chap on the door is very friendly

Happened upon The Chestnuts by chance when on a day trip to Ayr, glad I did! Lovely meal, friendly efficient staff and felt very safe with the Covid-19 procedure in place. Added bonus of last day of Eat Out to Help Out discount!

I stopped there to have some relaxing time in their garden. I had a cup of coffee and a cake. The waitress was very smart and hardworking. Cake was very fresh. Tea was lovely.

Had a lovely meal here. We were a party of 5 and had the conservatory all to ourselves. We all had 3 courses and not one complaint about any of the food which not only tasted good but was also well presented. Staff very friendly, helpful and all Covid compliant. We have recently come out of shielding and felt very safe.

Return vist just as good as the first the food and service is always fantastic and we all felt really safe definitely recommend and will definitely be back

Wife is a Coeliac. Offered inside or outside.. We had a great outside table for 5. Staff were very knowledgeable and helpful. Food was delicious. Drinks were a bit pricey. But overall a good dinning experience

I am gluten free being coeliac and this was no problem whatsoever.Starter was chicken liver pate with gf oatcakes- delicious Main was the salmon on a bed of creamy mash with seasonal veg- equally deliciousThe staff were very knowledgeable and very courteous. We stumbled upon the hotel on our way home from a day at the coast. The manager met us at the door and escorted us to the beer garden. Initially we were only there for a drink, but we’re made so welcome decided to order dinner. It certainly didn’t disappoint either, the food was great and was the perfect end to a perfect day. The staff are just fantastic and a real asset to the business. Thanks again for great food and service.

I went here Saturday and Sunday night for post lockdown real ales. The first pints ive had since March so was always going to be good. The place has a one way system to get around and all staff are wearing the saftey gear with multiple sanatisers around the area. Decided to sit outside both nights. Half of the area is uncovered with other half covered. Table service is in effect s well.

We used to come here every month for lunch but because of lockdown, It’s been 5 months since we’ve been here and we’ve missed it so much. It was lovely to sit in the restaurant for lunch today. Tables were placed at a good distance from one another and all the staff were very professional. Food was exceptionally good. My husband had the Cullen Skink and I had the special soup - sweet potato and ginger, bother we’re lovely, hot and served with a piece of fresh bread. For the mains, my husband had the fajitas and I had the salmon, again both dishes were excellent. Although the restaurant was quite busy we didn’t have long to wait at all. Unfortunately neither of us could manage a sweet.Thanks to everyone. Hope to be back again soon.

Sat outside as weather was good, inside wasn’t very busy and there was a few empty tables outside. We arrived about 3pm so not a busy time.Outside area was lovely and plenty of staff. However, they didn’t attend to us often. After our starter and main, we had to wait quite a while for a dessert menu, then a long time after that for the plate to be taken and we asked for the bill. This was despite shouting excuse me to a few different staff members on a few occasions. After we received the bill, and waiting about 20mins for a waitress to come back with the card machine, We then had to go and find someone ourselves to be able to pay and leave. The menu is large and looked good, but food was average. Nothing to complain about but nothing special and not great service. Had better experiences in ayr.

Three adults, three happy customers. So many things on the menu we will definitely be back to try more.

Every time we go they deliver a flawless meal for us, just the right portion, good service and at a good price too. Can not fault this place. Very tasty and casual

I have been getting meals delivered every week for the last 3 weeks. Tonight I had the Thai fish cakes then the peppercorn chicken. All I can say is exceptional. The food is first class and is pipping hot. The first week was a treat but now value for money we get a delivery ever week. Keep up the good work Guys. Cant recommend this service enough.

What can I say? Amazing food and amazing staff! Went for a bite of dinner to get away from chat of the news of the day/week/month. Enjoyed delicious food served by the most courteous and professional staff who checked everything was to our liking. Dessert was so yummy I wanted to ask for the recipe . Overall such a lovely experience and I will certainly be going back for further visits! Some people are never happy with their lot and like to complain... not me! Praise where praise is due! Well done Chestnut's staff! I will be recommending you far and wide .

I always worry when I see a dish swimming in gravy ( what are they trying to hide ?). Here, it is festering stale potatoes . What an utter disappointment and your chef ( aherrmmm, I use that word very loosely, should hang their head in shame). Question for you Chef()How long does it take to boil fresh potatoes? 20 mins if that is beyond your capability , I suggest you hang up your apron! Do not eat here unless you have no taste buds at all. We where also accosted by some aggressive dyed haired old bint telling us the food was lovely . Did you taste my stale meal? , No you silly busy body, so mind your own business! Do not waste your time nor money .

It was 6 pm on a Friday evening. The tables in the restaurant were all taken. The bar area was full too as I was led to a table there with the assurance that it was the same menu. Despite it being very busy I was attended to promptly and efficiently. Food was tasty too. Could not help myself and had three courses. Chicken and avocado salad, stone bream for mains and followed up with almond ice cream and melon slices. All washed down with sparkling water. Cost under £30. Immensely good value. The mystery why the restaurant was so heaving at that hour in the evening was an early bird offer from 4.30 to 6 pm on weekdays for discounted prices. There was a sign advertising this on the board at the entrance! An attractive offer that the citizens of Ayr took advantage of.

We popped into the Chestnuts for weekday lunch. Lovely surroundings, warm welcome and attentive service. My husband had the Cullen Skink which was a meal in itself! Very tasty. Wd both had burgers, mine the non meat variety with added goats cheese, again very tasty and very filling. Far too full to try the dessert menu which also looked delicious. Would definitely recommend and return.

Veg, chicken and prawn tempura was astounding - hot, crisp and plentiful. Chicken curry was fab. Service was a joy - Catriona brought books for my granddaughter and chatted with her so nicely. Such a warm welcome for very small children makes this a very special place. The staff were very friendly and gave us a relaxed, enjoyable lunch - no small feat with an active toddler!

Came here for a birthday dinner tonight, 10.1.20 a party of 15 including children. The lady who was serving us was top notch, couldn’t fault her in the slightest. She made sure everyone was ok at all times and catered to everyone’s needs. The food was amazing! 3 courses for £23 was brilliant, the quality of food and excellent service topped it off. Nice wee cosy hotel/restaurant. I would definitely recommend this place. :)

I had gone to the Chestnuts Hotel in Ayr for a meal with a group of about 20 people.We had arrived at 1pm and as the waitress was taking the drinks orders I explained to her that I needed to leave at 2pm, and would I be able to order my starter and main course before the rest of the group. She said that was not a problem and took my order.While the rest of the group were ordering their drinks, my first course arrived, which was well cooked and delicious.As the first courses were being delivered to the group, my main course arrived which was again well cooked and very enjoyable. Due to this exemplary service I was able to leave at 1:50 after a very enjoyable meal.I found the whole experience excellent and would not hesitate in coming back.Very well done to the staff, both serving and preparing the meal and being able to cope with my request.If I could, I would give them 10 stars :-)

Loads to choose from on the menu - vegetarian, gluten free and vegan options available. Tasty dishes all round and fabulously lush desserts. Lovely staff and great relaxed atmosphere...we’ll be back to sample some more.

A great pub with excellent pub food. The atmosphere in the bar is cosy with a lovely fire burning in the grate and great beer and selection of wines. It is always busy so at weekends best to call ahead and book a table.

Lunch dinner or snacks I have been going for years and have never had a bad meal the staff are lovely as well very attentive without being in your face well done guys hope to be going for more years

My first visit to the Chestnuts and can’t recommend it enough.

Food was beautifully presented and delicious. Great menu. Staff were friendly and attentive. There is a great atmosphere in this hotel. We stayed 2 nights and had 2 delicious breakfasts. Rooms were spacious, clean and very comfortable. Great location near beach. Plenty parking. Couldn't fault this establishment.

Our quilting group had an early Christmas dinner here and right from the start the service was first class. Food was excellent with a varied menu, surroundings were warm and comfortable with a relaxed atmosphere. This was my first visit and will definitely return.

The chestnuts is local to me and my neighbours and much appreciated the early evening deals are great the food is terrific and the staff so helpful get down there early

We had a dinner here at the weekend and from the greeting at the door to the payment of the bill everything was first class. Pleasant staff and good atmosphere and the food was excellent. We were entertaining visitors who were most impressed and we will definitely visit again.

I had never been here before so it was a lovely surprise. The restaurant was very busy, always a good sign. Most people had taken advantage of the early bird specials, but we arrived too late. The restaurant is lovely and the staff pleasant and attentive. The food generally was very good. Next time however I wouldn’t have the olive oil, balsamic and bread to start. The balsamic was too thick more like a syrup and the wrong type of bread served. Also no plates to mix and dip. The other courses made up for this small shortfall.

I visited recently with my partner after finding somewhere to eat on Trip advisor. The restaurant is nice and cosy and we were seated straight away. I had the macaroni cheese and partner had the fajitas, both were lovely. I also like you get a free bowl of chips for the table so always the bonus. Service was quick and polite. The food was reasonably priced and would definitely recommend a visit if looking for good food in the area.

Strongly recpmmend eating here. The food is 1st class always and the staff are very attentive.

I was one of four who stayed a mixture of three and four nights whilst on a golf tour. We found it the ideal place. We dined here on night one and the food was so good that we ended up dining here for oiur entire stay. The breakfasts too were very nice indeed. The real stars of this place though were the staff who looked after us royally all week and showed a keen eye on customer service which was all delivered with good humour. This is a busy hotel during the day too but we always managed to park our cars in the car park upon returning. The hotel is in a quiet location and we managed to sleep very well. We had individual rooms. We travelled 400 miles to play golf in Scotland and to be honest are ulikely to do so again. If we did however we would have no hesitation staying at the Chestnuts again.

Lovely place, nice welcome. Planned the Early Bird but as my friend likes to have lobster once a year and has had none this year, when we espied lobster on menu - two please! Beautifully presented, with five huge prawns on skewers on the side, lobster meat taken out of shell and then placed into empty shell. What a boon not to crack claws. Delicious indeed.

We stopped here for lunch after visiting the Burns centre and had a very enjoyable Sunday roast. My wife enjoyed the lamb and I greatly enjoyed the roast lion of pork.

7 of us had the evening saver deal. Excellent food served by helpful, pleasant staff. Highly recommended.

Ate here with a group of friends, admittedly on a busy Friday evening. The atmosphere is ok, the tables are crammed in and through the entire evening by chair was bashed repeatedly by waitresses attending to other tables - I wasn’t sitting far out and I’m not that large. There was plenty space against the wall on the other side should the table be moved to prevent this.

Just been for a family meal and cannot recommend this place highly enough. Food and service were superb and staff are very friendly. Great menu and prices very reasonable.

This is really the best place to eat in Ayr! Great menu,great food,big portions,reasonably priced. My vegetable tempura was scalding hot and amazingly crisp right to the last bite! Nice bit of salad and chips - all perfect! Fish n chips, scampi n chips, fish cakes - also fabulous! Service excellent. Cannot fault anything! Five gold stars!

Met friends for lunch after long spell in hospital. Now in wheelchair so access important. Need to know your coming as entrance through bar area. Staff extremely helpful. Good choice of food and 1/2 portions available on some items. Food is excellent and not expensive. Will definitely be back in near future

Great beer garden sat in the garden with my daughter and husband and it was lovely to sit and relax and enjoy a drink.There was a lovely family atmosphere and although we didn't eat the food looked amazing.

Have eaten here plenty times in the past, latest visit merited a review to indicate that service and quality of food is consistently very good, my wife and I sat outside in the lovely garden area and had 2 salads for lunch which were plentiful and tasty, staff are very friendly and polite, service also very good and food reasonably priced. We will return once again as close to our home, would recommend a visit for lunch or dinner ....

From the breakfast to the evening dinner we can highly recommend the resteraunt and the food. The staff are very friendly and really helpful. The atmosphere is very good and the same food is served both in the bar area and the resteraunt. We were staying in the hotel and the locals seemed to be regulars which is a good sign.

2nd time here for lunch was even better than the first time I had the chicken curry witch was fantastic really tastey the staff were great as always you can see why your always busy with the fantastic food and service combination would definitely recommend the chestnuts for occasion

Stopped by for a quick lunch last week and was very impressed by the level of service and the quality of the food. The Cullen Skink was beautiful and the Cajun Chicken Crepes were lovely. Will be back.

We go here fairly regularly and have never been disappointed. Always a buzz in the bar, great ambiance and delicious food. Staff couldn’t do enough for you. Thank you Grant and crew.

Stopped here on our way back to Belfast on the Ferry as had a few hours to pass. After a lovely walk on the beach we had Lunch here it is a lovely Old house with lots of atmosphere. The staff were lovely I wished I got the name of the girl that served us she was also serving behind the bar. She took the time to ask us where we were from and we had a general chat about the place. Food was lovely and the bar where we ate had a lovely ambience. If I was going over to Scotland again I would like to stay here on my way or coming home and explore Ayr and would definitely stay there.

Goats Cheese, Pesto & Balsamic Bruschetta proved to be a great option to kick start the meal while enjoying a sunny evening in the chilled out surroundings of the Chestnut's beer garden. For main course I broke with my standard protocol of greed, gluttony, force-feeding and displayed a modicum of restraint by just ordering half a haddock and chips. I reverted to type by ordering a tasty Chocolate Brownie to finish with.

5 of us called in for a booked lunch. The prices were reasonable and the service good. The food was tasty, served piping hot and timed to arrive all together. There was ample parking. It was a little lacking in ambience but the food and service was so good that this was not a major concern.

A must visit restaurant inAyr that is well managed, serves great food, professional staff and exceptionally customer centred. Especially good for very fresh fish dishes and soup.

Sunday lunchtime presented us with a dilemma of cooking Sunday lunch or eating out after a long walk on the beach. Eating out and we for once decided to try The Chestnuts Hotel and restaurant Nit having booked we had to eat in the bar as the restaurant was busy. The bar was very relaxed and had a really good vibe. The Sunday lunch menu was excellent for us resulting in two lamb roasts and fish for our daughter. All the meals were excellent of good proportions. Washed down with a pint of Ruddles real ale topped it all off nicely. Great venue food and staff.

Visited the other night for a spot of dinner... Very much enjoy the surroundings of the Chestnuts and it’s hearty feel.

Came here to have Easter lunch with the family and expectations were well below what I had here before in a number of occasions. The food was nice, but I left feeling hungry and so was the rest of the party. I always bragged about here, but after this I feel it is time to look elsewhere

Firstly, great service - the best. Attentive staff but just right not overbearing. Secondly, the food. Excellent all round we had six different meals and each was tasty, well cooked, and came from a huge menu. Kids meal was great - home made not from a packet. Will go back. Fairly priced and just a few metres from the beach. Ayr beach is clean and sandy and generally the weather is better than the rest of Scotland. Beautiful area.

My family and I visit the Chestnuts most Friday nights and absolutely love it! The staff are so friendly and always accommodating. They are great with my 1 year old niece and 3 year old nephew.

Another successful visit. Lovely bar area with coal fireplace. Good friendly service in old style bar atmosphere. Large dining room available too. Garden when the temperature rises!

We've been here a few times over the past year. Back for belated Mother's Day lunch today. The food was excellent as always and the staff are extremely friendly and welcoming. Service time can't be faulted, starters arrived in about five minutes. I would definitely recommend The Chestnuts and we will be back.

Had dinner here yesterday, wasn’t disappointed in any way . The staff are efficient and friendly, as for the food, excellent. I had the chicken fajitas, sizzling and delicious, followed that with mango posset and coconut ice cream, amazingly good. My son thoroughly enjoyed his meal too and loved the sticky toffee pudding.
