Lovely spot, very friendly staff, perfect real ales (2 choices on the ramp), good sized car park. We enquired about eating there - it was booked and we asked at 5pm, so a advance notice is needed). Apparently it’s a well known gastro-pub, frequented by the Islington set and some Yuppies did come in as we were leaving. They force out locals wherever they go. So long as the pub remains trendy, it will remain open. Long term, it’s doomed for redevelopment as there seemed no locals were using it. Pity.

Not sure what went wrong but kitchen service was dreadful…waited an hour for our main course whilst three other tables that arrived after us all got served their food ahead of us. The food when it arrived wasn’t hot and had little flavour, but there was no point complaining as it was so late. Really disappointing given its reputation but there are plenty of better pubs in this part of Norfolk.

We had booked for six of us for dinner to celebrate a special birthday. Welcome was lovely but disappointed when shown to our table that it was clearly a table for four with six chairs. I actually couldn't get my left leg under the table and had to sit with the table leg between my knees. No other table was available however so we put it aside and decided to enjoy the meal anyway. All fine with the starter and main course, the service was good and the food delicious, just had we had hoped. Problems then began however. We only got a second round of drinks by calling a waitress over and then had to remind her when they didn't turn up.All this time the plates were still waiting to be cleared from the table and when they eventually were we received a dessert menu. We all chose what we wanted, plus tea and coffee and waited to order. Half an hour on we had not seen our waitress again, or any other, and decided to call it a night as we had now been at the restaurant over three hours and still not been asked for our dessert order or been able to place a third drinks order. It took five minutes or so to find someone to be able to pay and I explained our disappointment. He said "sorry about that" followed by "would you like to leave a tip" to which I unsurprisingly said no.So in summary, great food, although can't comment on the desserts, but very poor service and comfort.

Honestly one of the best meals that we have ever had - we couldn’t fault it! The food was absolutely delicious. We started off with sharing the mussels and scotch egg, which were great. We actually went to the Duck for their special SFC flatbread, which really didn’t disappoint with its crispy, juicy chicken. Then we finished on the brownie and treacle tart, with the treacle tart being potentially one of the best desserts ever, all gooey and oozy in the middle. The staff were very helpful and didn’t pressure us. The atmosphere was nice, the prices were reasonable and we will definitely be returning!

I last visited in 2012 and walked out after we were virtually ignored by the staff and stuck in the corner in a dingy small room. But wow it has changed since ! We were back in the small room but it was bright and fresh with lovely sea pictures on the wall. Buzzy atmosphere and at 5.30 on a Sunday , really busy.Every single one of the staff was friendly ,chatty and very helpful . Whilst most got stuck into large Sunday roasts we opted for pollock which was fresh and perfectly cooked . Fine vegetables to accompany plus a really interesting and tasty bowl of cabbage. Costs are a bit on the high side but well worth it for the quality of food and staff. It won't be another nine year since our last visit ! Look forward to going back asap.

After the last turbulent year I was so looking forward to eating out and especially here with the Instagram hype. Unfortunately I was very disappointed. The place lacked atmosphere and though you can’t choose who sits near you it was off putting to hear all night someone’s first world problems of their swimming pool dilemmas and how they had to replace their 25 year old ‘Miele’ dishwasher. That aside the waitress told us about the special and provided a wine list. My husband ordered the mussels followed by steak and I ordered scallop followed by the cod special. The mussels had many closed and he was provided a teaspoon for the sauce which by our reckoning he would still be there now. We had to ask for a suitable spoon which was brought promptly. The scallop was tasty but more of a taster than a starter. Bearing in mind the kind of money (over £30 a bottle) we was spending the wine was just dumped on the table and not opened to breathe or anything. Not the tastiest wine either. The cod was lovely as I would expect at price charged. My husbands steak was minimal. Not particularly tasty and to be honest looked like a lost sole of the plate. Perhaps a little colour on the plate would have helped. Not even a garnish. The service was ok at best. Different waitresses all night so never sure who was looking after you. Their are many better places to eat and we eat mussels the following evening up the road at a fraction of the cost with none that hadn’t opened. With the bill coming in at £140 I felt disappointed to be in a soulless glorified pub. As Public Enemy told us ‘Don’t believe the hype’

This was the third of our 'four restaurants in four nights' trip of North Norfolk, and it's one we've visited in the past. We were immediately given a warm welcome, which always sets the scene well. There are two noted starters here, one of which is their Fruit Pig 53 Black Pudding with Fried Duck Egg. This is truly splendid: the only problem is that you want a second one after finishing the first. The Cromer Crab Bisque was also fantastic. For the mains, we both had the fish of the day, which was Roasted Cod, Bacon, Fennel, Parsley Sauce & Peas. This really was a spectacular dish. For dessert, the Triple Chocolate Brownie was huge - we managed one between us.The wine list was varied, with something for all tastes and pockets. The staff are attentive and helpful. When we're next in the area, we will certainly book again.

I had the chicken thighs to start which were so good I wished I’d ordered them for my main (the presentation of them was a bit odd though just plonked on a plate with nothing else, but they tasted so good it didn’t really matter!) My husband and I both had the beef main. It’s pricey but very delicious. We came with our 2 children aged 5&8 and the kids options were great. A restaurant that offers good food for kids instead of frozen rubbish is always a winner in my eyes. They loved it, although the humus isn’t traditionally tasting and was a bit too strong and lemony for them. Staff were great and very friendly. We had a few days break nearby and had seen The Duck Inn listed in the property's nearby restaurants. Finding it was fully booked we enquired anyway and found they had a last-minute cancellation for two in the Garden Room. The menu and service were superb. Hard to choose just which dishes to try, but we settled on the scotch egg and mackerel fillet for starters and they were perfect - the tastes of the sauces blending really well together with the main ingredient. The main courses of lamb and asparagus pasta were exquisite. Again the tastes complementing each other so well that we wanted the meal to last and last - so we ordered dessert! The cornflake jam tart sounded interesting and was just right. I thought Lincolnshire Poacher was worth a try - served on malt loaf with honey drizzled over it was just perfect. Again the taste sensations matched perfectly. There was a good range of wines and some guest ales on tap besides the regular brews. The staff were all really welcoming and the service was extremely good. Courses were brought promptly to the table and cleared when you were ready. There was always someone available to ask for anything needed and yet they managed to appear unhurried while always being there just when you needed them. One thing that really impressed was that we ordered dessert and coffee together, and the coffee was brought after the dessert just when we were ready to drink it (there are so many places that bring the coffee first, so it is cold when you want to drink it). It is the small touches like this that made the meal so memorable. We would love to give this more than an "excellent" rating, and if we ever find ourselves heading back to this area we will make sure to book well in advance so as not to miss out.

I’d been looking forward to visiting The Duck as the highlight to a gastronomic week in Norfolk. The web site mentioned “Award Winning” quite a lot and I was impressed with the menu. Sadly, the meal we had was best described as ‘good in parts’. What struck me most about the food was that so much if it seemed to have been prepared in advance. This is understandable in a busy kitchen, but the result was that nothing really felt like it had been freshly cooked for the table. A steak ordered medium rare was rare to blue, all the more surprising as it had been sliced before serving so this could have been rectified but wasn’t. Quite a few other details were just not pleasant. Potatoes in a sour tomato sauce do not qualify as ‘Patatas Bravas’. The signature fried chicken was very good, but it was served tepid and, again, had clearly not been freshly cooked. Side orders were forgotten or served incorrectly, with orders of chips covered in the unpleasant Patatas Bravas sauce and, as a result, inedible. These missing or incorrect items were still charged for on the bill. My distinct feeling was that this was a venue that was resting in its laurels and the kitchen was being run for the convenience of the chef rather than for the gastronomic pleasure of the diners. A hugely disappointing meal. The one highlight was the professional and cheerful service from the young lady who looked after us most attentively. That dragged this review from a terrible 2 to a mediocre 3. If only the cooking staff had cared as much about what they were producing.

Unfortunately they were fully booked so I tried to book ahead of our hols this year and was told on phoning that there were no vacancies all week - until a cancellation gave us a reprieve. So glad! My wife commented that she has never eaten every mouthful of every course at any restaurant meal before. That all changed tonight! The Ox Liver was amazing, as was my mackerel starter. Several times we observed that we had “never tasted [eg cabbage] like that before!” My wife said exactly that about her Scotch Egg starter and having sampled her dish I have to agree!Undoubtedly a lovely meal in a very pleasant pub with potential for a lovely evening stroll after in the pretty village.

As always, world class cuisine, extremely well kept beer, extremely friendly service and grace under every pressure. We have missed this so much and appreciate the considerable efforts always made to give us a lovely occasion. This is a pub restaurant which lives up to its reputation and more. Thank you!

A totally ad hoc lunch visit on a Friday afternoon and so pleased we decided to stop. Luckily dry enough for outdoor dining and also luckily no booking required. Interesting garden pop up lunch menu, we both enjoyed the flatbreads (lamb and falafel and accompaniments ). and the frangipane tart. An excellent wine menu too. Service with a smile from both waitresses. We will be returning when we come back to Norfolk in September.

Ate here last year, had the scampi which was mediocre at best, more irritating was we were sat next to a door that did not close properly so constantly having to get up and shut the door so we didn’t freeze. Thought with lockdown about to ease we would give them the benefit of the doubt and give it another try. However, when trying to book for 6 + our 6 month old daughter (which are exempt for under 5’s) we were told that they would not accept our booking because of our daughter. Blessing in disguise, won’t be giving this restaurant another chance!

We went for a Saturday lunch and has a super experience. Modern cookery with flare - something to temp everyone. I had the Christmas dinner special wth a Crimbo kebab but hubby had a delicious fish with coconut fragrance, which was insanely good. Impressed with the decor, restaurant, toilets, menu, service - no wonder that are winning awards. Recommended.

We have visited The Duck Inn twice in December. Both times we were welcomed with friendly staff and safe measures in place. The food was delicious. Nice portion sizes and cooked and presented to perfection. The desserts on offer are all indulgent and a perfect way to end the meal. Even the coffee hit the spot. The Inn was decorated tastefully for Christmas and we treated ourselves to mulled wine to start on our last visit, which tasted just like Christmas in a glass.Would highly recommend to anyone visiting North Norfolk.

Read a lot about The Duck so popped over for lunch. Lovely renovated pub with great staff. The menu looked a little off-balance though. What was the chef trying to achieve? Gastro pub or village pub with chicken in a basket? Its not a gastro pub. It could be, but the lunch menu is straight out of a 1990's establishment. The only exciting part of the menu were the flatbreads - unique to Norfolk perhaps, but really very good. Flavours and quality were 10/10. It was our impression that the menu would have a twist - a USP. So a scotch egg would turn into something deconstructed. No. The scampi was simply deep fried frozen blobs straight out of the wholesalers plastic bag. The peas were good as too was the tartare sauce. But it was a boring menu. Perhaps the locals are 'boring' people? I think not. There are enough well travelled people in the region crying out for exciting cuisine. Advice - vegetarian starter followed by one of the flatbreads as a main course. Wine list was great, excellent Provence rose, but why, why why do you have to offer 125ml. 150ml, 175ml, 250ml and a bottle of the same plonk? You aren't a Weatherspoons!

My husband and I had dinner at The Duck Inn last night - everything was perfect and we were very impressed. The menu had interesting dishes on offer, the wine list was very good (with lots of options for glasses of wine, instead of just cheap house wine which you are normally offered when opting for a glass of wine), the food was really tasty & well presented and the staff were friendly & professional. We will definitely be back - thank you! Our new favourite restaurant in the Norfolk countryside.

Visited with friends for an evening meal. My meal was excellent . Scotch egg starter is a must . I had the market fish which was hake with mussels with a delicious sauce, we did find the menu a little limited but sometimes that makes choosing easier . My husband had the pork belly and was a little disappointed as it was a bit too fatty , this was mentioned and a free dessert was offered which was a fair gesture. Now on to their mustard. Every time I visit Norfolk I stock up on a few jars, it is a fantastic addition to sauces, I use it for my cauliflower cheese and also when I make a fish pie, it is an essential ingredient in my kitchen .

Reading the reviews here and in the press it looks like our experience was unusual but our food was not particularly good and we had a half hour wait between the starter and the main course. The 3 Brancaster oysters to start were lovely: large, creamy and with no shell fragments inside. The smoked salmon less good: the muffin it sat on was tough and chewy. The hake with mussels was excellent: perfectly cooked very fresh fish.Roast beef and Yorkshire pudding was a real disappointment. Good beef from the ubiquitous Arthur Howell but the roast potatoes and Yorkshires themselves were dried up and tasted as if they had sat around in the oven for a while. Very good cabbage and broccoli though. The biggest let down was the service: a half an hour wait for the main courses.I asked what the problem was in the kitchen and was told they were short of staff because of Covid, which seemed implausible.

Booked Duck Inn on back of very favourable review by Giles Coren. Whilst food was good the service was shocking. Everything took an eternity to be done and staff would avoid eye contact so always had to be beckoned. It was like we didn’t exist. It took 20 minutes to take our order and went downhill from there. Trying to pay the bill took nearly half an hour.Staff are young and inexperienced in my opinion and left us really deflated. We tried a number of local places and this was the biggest let down. Hero, Crown Inn & Socius were outstanding for service and food. Staff at Duck Inn should visit these establishments to see how it’s done!

I am shocked to read the previous couple of reviews. The one that mention burgers and trays has clearly selected the wrong venue in their review! The Duck doesn’t do burgers and certainly doesn’t do trays! The other bad review that is negative about the service just doesn’t relate to the restaurant I’ve been to many times. We don’t live locally and so are only able to go a few times a year and yet many of the staff are the same. They usually remember us despite the infrequency of our visits. The food is exemplary but part of the reason we love it here is because of the atmosphere and that is created by the wonderful team!

Booked up a lunch visit the day before by email, this was confirmed within 4 hours. Great high quality gastropub offering excellent cooking and standout local produce. A small niggle over one of the vegetables being more than al dente was quickly replaced and the freshness of all the courses was obvious to see. Special mention to the Chocolate, peanut and jam cheesecake sandwich, unusual and so tasty, not at all cloying or over sweet. Staff worked hard to deliver efficient table service. The bill was good value for the quality of the cooking and menu.

It has been a year or more since I last visited The Duck Inn and I am happy to report that the excellence is continued, albeit with the Covid restrictions. There is an extensive menu to suit all tastes. There were three of us and, whilst two had mussels for a starter (simply outstanding), the third had the crab, which was also very good. All three of us had the fish dish of the day, hake, served with mashed potato, chorizo and a green vegetable; again, excellent. For dessert one had the sticky toffee pudding whilst another experimented with the “malt loaf, butter pat, local honey and Wissington cheese”. It was exactly as described and a bit filling with an interesting selection of flavours!Washed down with Ghost Ship and Albariño white, followed by Americans coffee this was a very satisfying and excellent lunch.Service was very good, although the desserts were a bit delayed. The Covid precautions were exemplary.

Friends recommended this gastro-pub for Sunday lunch. Unfortunately we could only get the 4pm sitting, which was a shame as one or two options were missing. We sat outside but it was starting to cool. Nevertheless we both had the special (pollock and mussels in a fish broth) which was excellent (with a side of new pots for substance!!). The brownie was shared for dessert and was very good indeed. Service was attentive and friendly. We'd recommend it, but it was not the best meal we had on our short break in North Norfolk. And it is not cheap.

We have visited this pub before. This time we had to eat outside in a covered but cool annexe in the garden. The Covid precautions were evident, but not overpowering. The staff were helpful but the service was a little slow at times, however they did apologise. The food was of a high standard for a pub and was enjoyable but not outstanding. We both had the bisque which we found to have a very unusual (strange) taste. Not unpleasant, but neither of us would order it again here. My steak was excellent and the patatas bravas, aioli and chimichuri made an unusual accompaniment. My wife had the scampi which was very flavoursome and enjoyable. On balance we will be happy to dine here again when visiting Norfolk, but would prefer to be able to dine indoors.

My husband had the fried chicken wtg oyster mayo- not the most intricate dish but the flavour was amazing, as was the crab bisque with remoulade and the most amazing beignetre. Hubby had the Pork belly which was extremely tasty, whilst I had the Halibut and Mussel dish with Dashi broth. It was one of the tastiest fish dishes I have ever had and the fish was cooked beautifully. Top notch. The rice pudding and plums had an amazing flavour and drinks were well priced and great quality. We had very high expectation of this gastropub and were extremely disappointedThe trio of crab in a bisque was unfortunately look warm considering it was cold windy night and we ate indoors. The only fish dish was pollock. It is the poorer version of cod,It was bland and slightly dry.I asked the waitress why they were serving pollock and she informed me that they had a backlog of obviously frozen pollock accumulated during lockdown, It is not a local fish and as a discovered most fresh fish comes from east Suffolk coast or Whitby area Norfolk more known for shellfish. It did not help that the samphire was very string and that is no excuse as it is obtained locally in abundanceTo cap it off I had a raspberry sorbet which was zero artisanal - very sweet and little semblance of raspberry flavour - I had a feeling it was not preservative freeI appreciate that these are difficult times but other restaurants we visited White Horse in Brancaster Straithe and Wiveton Bell had upped their game We decided to cancel our second night there

We were looking forward to our meal here today having read/heard good things. I had the fried chicken to start. - 2 beige pieces on a plate with a dollop of mayonand a wedge of lemon. That was it. Chicken was crispy but didn’t have a huge amount of flavour, I would honestly rather have had KFC, better taste, better colour and half the price. We then had the £30 fillet of beef which was competently cooked but came with a teaspoon sized piece of blade and 3 pieces of broccoli (the cheap kind, not interestingly sprouting). Just really expensive for what it was. The mud cake and chocolate custard was basically school dinner. We had been to the Anish Kapoor exhibition at Houghton Hall nearby which was very good so not a wasted journey but we won’t be back to The Duck.

Been a few times before and always been quite good but this was really average. The lunch menu was really limited (Ham, egg & chips, scampi and chips, curry or a tuna nicoise - or a £30 fillet of beef). We had the scampi and the ham egg and chips and it was just very average pub food. The Stanhoe Fried Chicken for starter wasn't crispy. I had a pint of Ghost Ship that I couldn't drink, maybe the last of the barrel. Service was OK but overall not good enough to sustain the reputation, better luck next time. I'll wind Giles Coren up when I see him. Not sure if we just had an off day or he did. Suggest the dinner menu is much better than the lunch menu.

Struggling to think of anything bad to say about our visit to the Duck Inn. We went for our wedding anniversary end of July. The staff were very friendly and attentive and they accommodated our youngest son's extensive allergies with a custom meal. The food was exceptional. We had the pork belly with the black pudding as well as delicious sides. Kids ordered the sorbet for pudding and it was a massive portion and incredibly delicious - especially the lemon sorbet. It's not cheap, but it was worth every penny to eat high quality, delicious, wonderful food, with excellent staff, in a nice environment, and there was little to none of the covid nonsense seen at other eateries. Everything is done well and sensibly e.g. one-way systems when busy and limiting amount of ppl in the loos at one time. Could not fault them on anything. Could not recommend highly enough.

We had a dreadful experience at this restaurant. Despite booking a table, we were seated at a cramped spot at 7:30, and the neighboring table had to be rearranged for us to fit thank god there was only two of us! By 8:35, we still hadn't received our starters, and table beside had been waiting equally as long for main course prompting us to leave. The service was abysmal, Completely ruined what was supposed to be a pleasant birthday meal.
