The Mermaid Cafe Bar & Restaurant in Swansea

After a late afternoon dog walk we popped in for dinner, great decision. Excellent hospitality and food superb 👌 And as for the Gower Gold, sublime pint, or two!!🍺🍺

Last time we visited The Mermaid we all enjoyed a lovely lunch time meal, but today we were all disappointed. We being four Ladies that Lunch. I had a fishcake for starters - one fishcake which seemed to be mainly just potato or at least no obvious fish taste or sight. It came with one halved cherry tomato, some rocket with balsamic glaze and some tartare sauce. My friend did say the soup was nice. One person had the Lunch Sharing Nachos which cost £8. This mainly consisted of nachos with some melted cheese and three small side dishes of salsa, guacamole and a white dip. Not very impressive for the price. She paid £4.25 extra for some grilled chicken stripes. The beef bourguignon was quite tasty but the carrot and pea veg looked a bit tired. Coffees were good but we were somewhat shocked that a glass of Soda and lime was £2.30 and a glass of Lemonade and lime a whopping £3.80 ! Staff very pleasant, venue lovely and clean but I'm afraid we won't be returning in a hurry.

Lovely restaurant, good food. The staff were very friendly and welcomed our dog too. Will definitely recommend.

Excellent service. Food was also good quality and generous portions. They went the extra mile to make provision for varied dietary requirements. Friendly and welcome, including an extra special welcome for our dog. Will return.

Family meal today for my 70th birthday,23 of us. Wonderful service and everybody seemed to enjoy. It was busy but the staff seemed to cope well and always smiling.A mumbles treasure. Thank you.

Had An amazing night for my daughters graduation the staff were very attentive and friendly couldn't do enough for us and the food as usual was fantastic would recommend this restaurant to all our friends and family thank you for a lovely night

Had Christmas lunch with friends today. Staff lovely and attentive. Really disappointed with the roast potatoes. Obviously not fresh but warmed up. At nearly £40 per head this isn't good enough.

Was expecting something special for the higher prices but carvery very basic. No turkey so had the pork which was nicely cooked once you cut all the fat off. Shocked that they pour the gravy for you, why? Was asked 3 times if we wanted dessert... Yup answer is still NO. Too many staff came to the table, too many times. Nearby parking £4.50 for 2 hours.

not the prettiest place but very wholesome on the inside with friendly staff and a wide menu - a whole vegan section of the menu!! good vegan burger and some interesting options. dog friendly and gluten-free friendly too !!

Great food, nice place and reasonable price

Had a great time with my wife and 2.9 year old for dinner at 6:15. The waiters were approachable and accommodating. Great menu. We had the carbonara and seafood linguine. Cooked excellently. Decent kids menu. Colours and crayons to keep the lad entertained 🙃

Sat outside on a sunny day. Was happy as do vegan options. Would have given 5 but no vegan milk for coffee. Please buy some

Visited twice while on holiday in The Mumbles...very impressed with the service, staff & atmosphere. The food was piping hot & very generous portions. Prices are really reasonable & staff are friendly & efficient, it was quite busy but we were served fairly quickly. Had to rush off the second time due to parking (prices are very high close by) I would recommend it to anyone visiting the area. 5* service.

We visited twice on our trip to Mumbles over the Bank Holiday weekend. Both nights we had a lovely dinner. The food was amazing! The fish was gorgeous and they had the best garlic bread ever! The service was very good and extremely friendly. The place is extremely dog friendly! Will definitely be back next time we are in the area.

We found the Mermaid by complete chance, it was FULL of people smiling and enjoying high quality meals. It was Sunday and people were queuing for a Sunday roast. I had seafood and it was excellent. If you happen to be in the area, HERE is where you want to eat!

Good quality freshly made sourdough sausage bap but had to ask for brown sauce and teapot was served with small espresso coffee cup rather than a decent size cup or mug 🙈

The staff are so friendly and so caring. The food was excellent. They also gave our dog so much attention which she loved, would highly highly recommend ! Thank you for a great experience :-)

Quite probably the best carvery I've ever had.

Booked a table for 14 for 2PM Sunday. Turned up, table not ready. When it was ready, it was a table for 8 & a table for 6 - many family members had travelled some miles to be together, so two seperate tables was incredibly disappointing. Apparently, a large group had overstayed on the table we were to be given, which suggests that perhaps the place doesn't allow sufficient time between bookings? The place was very full, so service was a little slow, which is understandable. Starters turned up at different times, with a couple not turning up at all. Main courses were varied, from poor to mediocre to good, with anybody ordering a roast dinner discovering their food was cold - not lukewarm, but so cold as to be uneatable. Food arrived at different times, with all the roast dinners, 4 or 5 meals, having to be returned & microwaved to make them warm enough to be eatable, so you can imagine how they tasted. Some people had finished their meals by the time others meals arrived. After that, we obviously decided not to stay for pudding or coffee. To their credit, after some prompting, the roast dinners were taken off the bill, but I'd have much rather paid for hot dinners! All in all, a terrible time was had by all. I've visited previously without any issues, but it seems they struggle when at capacity, which is a shame. Perhaps visiting at a less busy time would be better? I'll update my review if I visit again, so if it's a one-off I'll adjust accordingly.

A breakfast menu with everything you would want. Perfect portions, Illy coffee, and great service. From the dog: Leaving the best till last. Wish we found this place earlier as they have a Dog Menu!!! I had a bowl of sausages but there was chicken, salmon and steak on the menu too. Yummy.

Staff were helpful, we were a little let down by the food. The food didn't match the price we paid.

Lovely outside, £32 for 3 drinks. And mermaid platter, its a starter for 2 . To be honest we didn't want to eat anything after this.

Booked a table for 7.30, got there on time, ordered our meal at 7.40, and still no starter at 8.20, so complained and left at 8.20, plus other people arrived after use and all enjoying there meal. 🤨😔

Food was great smelt and tasted amazing, atmosphere was nice and chilled. Good place for a couple of family to go, dogs welcome too but it's a smart place with a good professional kitchen

I attended yesterday for a carvery after seeing very good reviews on Google. I have no issues with the staff who served us, as they were very friendly, however the food was extremely disappointing. I am unsure as to wether my experience on this particular occasion was an off day on the restaurants behalf or not. Unfortunately the carvery was completely ruined with the taste of the gravy and I can only describe it as resembling vinegar, as it had the most disgusting sharp lingering after taste that made the meal inedible. I also felt there was limited veg options with the carvery, however I am not sure if this was due to it being a busy period inside the restaurant or not. Overall, I am very disappointed with the experience and feel I have wasted my money on this occasion as I wasted the meal. I hope management do take this feedback onboard, as I can see in the reviews they have not been receptive to complaints from customers previously.

Lovely friendly staff great food, great service

We turned up without a reservation. Expecting it to be full as other places were. They found us a table very quickly and we sat and looked at the menu for very fussy people, some with allergies and with religious impacts on food.... We all found something to order. Food arrived hot and quickly and really tasted good. Staff were pleasant, polite and engaging with all concerned. Nobody hovered around us to turn us around quickly so they could get new customers in. Really friendly environment. First time that we have been in this restaurant definitely will be coming again.

Tried to walk in on mother's day recently but they were fully booked, 2 weeks later I can see why. Everything was simply amazing. Everything from the food, to staff, service, atmosphere and seating. For the price you're paying, the food is well worth it. Had a 7oz Fillet steak with mash, and peppercorn sauce. Steak was cooked to a beautiful medium rare, soft and juicy as a fillet should be. And the staff were the best, very accomodating and very friendly and considerate. They deserve every tip they get. Honestly I was thinking of a reason to not give this place 5 stars but you can't.

We had a Sunday carvery. It was great food, brilliantly organised - so no queues. The service level was outstanding with staff giving us a really warm welcome. This was the best service we've had as a large family over the last few years. Thank you to all at The Mermaid.

Popped in for lunch today while in Mumbles and was so glad we did. I think The Mermaid might have the friendliest staff I've ever met - they were all so smiley and helpful. We loved that they welcomed dogs indoors and outdoors and even treated our pup to free dog biscuits. The food was delicious and we were impressed they had their own craft ale and lager too. If we're ever back this way we'll definitely pay another visit. Thank you for a lovely lunch!

Really nice atmosphere quick service but I have to say we had a meal there on Saturday and my chicken was hard and over cooked and the jacket potatoe was cremated and a strange smell on the garnish. I never complain about my food but I have to say this was a great disappointment since this was my first meal out since lockdown.

Meal excellent, service very good,had a meal in gardens opposite very nice ,6 people spent over £150 basically spoilt by the manager remonstrating me for clicking my fingers at a waitress ,we had watched the waitress for 15 min trying to get a drink when she looked I raised a finger politely to attract her attention have never clicked my fingers at anyone. This spoilt the whole evening for all of us. My son pointed out to the manager that this was something I would never consider doing. Sad reflection that my actions could be construed as impolite having worked in a bar myself I would never be disparaging of any staff. This could have been a brilliant evening out with family but completely spoilt.As you can see from the owners reply he needs a lesson in public relations ,most of his comments are rubbish but to vitriolic attack on a customer is sad. Seems to be if you criticise his restaurant he goes totally over the top. See previous bad reviews.

Good food and seating and polite staff

situated in the village of mumbles overlooking swansea bay, the mermaid does give value for money with the carvery a must but be sure to book early as this is a popular restaurant. There is also open air dining with bench tables & seating which was & still is popular during the corona virus .Due to the popular village atmosphere parking can be difficult but be patient it is worth it .

Visited at lunchtime and had a lovely shared platter and pudding washed down with a couple of pints of the Mermaid lager. All delicious and the friendly and extremely helpful staff completed the experience. Highly recommended.

Well, where do I start?This place is absolutely amazing!!! I arrived with my Family to a fabulous Elf welcoming us in. On arrival we felt safe and our well-being cared For. Face masks, hands sanitisers and social distanced tables (shame this even needs to be a thing but thank you for all the safety measures in place) Breakfast was outstanding as always!Staff friendly and accommodating And The new addition Santa’s Grotto and snow on arrival was a massive Hit and made our Christmas. It’s a must book. Wishing all the staff a very Merry Christmas and a happy and healthy New Year.

2nd time of visiting the Mermaid,So we knew what we was expecting, very easy to book a table & polite lady took us to our table and we knew exactly what we wanted so it was very quick..I had a mixed grill & my partner had goats cheese tarts (I think that’s correct) so it arrived quickly! ( we were hungry by then (approx 3pm) as you can imagine!Only winge from myself with the food was the little burger in a bun ( I think it was still alive )Not good would of though well done would of been all of the meat. My partners was nice no complaints.To the worst part ever, both myself and my partner have been ridiculous ill (constantly throughout the day ( had food poising before and it’s exactly like that ) only place we have been it was within an hour of leaving so I can only imagine ...Other serious note, where we was sat there was a table across from us and within the restaurant not 2m apart that is also worrying I’m glad we was tucked away in the corner! Overall I’d keep away due to very bad stomach.Would happily speak to management & could resolve this & would not like others to be poorly ill during these unforgiving times.

Today we had a fantastic experience in the Mermaid. My fiancé, our 2 kids and I went to have breakfast with Santa. Due to the Covid situation I was a little bit concerned about taking the kids to such an event but I had no need to worry. They were so super organised, clean and safe that my worries were cast aside as soon as I passed the door. The breakfast was excellent and my other half is hard to please, he loved it and was priced well. The grotto was outside and arranged to allow for a save distance but it really didn’t take away from the experience. Da iawn to the Mermaid. Thank you for having us. Merry Christmas to all the wonderful staff.

Really liked the ambiance. Unfortunately I wasn't that impressed with the food sadly. I would try it again because of the environment. The waitresses need to cheer up a bit though I appreciate Covid is stressful for everyone but the people coming out are coming to spend money to escape it for a couple of hours 😊

On arrival staff were very welcoming and we felt comfortable with the Virus protocol.Food was excellent and so was the service..The atmosphere was very pleasant even though the restaurant was not very busy..All staff who served us were very helpful and pleasant without being over the top .Slight disappointment was that all windows were open because of the Virus and the temperature was not quite as we would have liked. However we understand why this was necessary.

My husband and I had Sunday lunch on 18 oct,the service was excellent, felt really safe concerning covid.we have had Sunday lunch in a good few restaurants but this was the best by far,full of flavour boiling hot and plenty of it excellent job thank you all. Thank god we've got places like this still open we can enjoy.

On arrival the young waiter gave our 9 week old puppy a biscuit. This is a first. The staff were all amazing. Nothing too much trouble.Food was 1st class... Atmosphere brilliant. Toilets spotless. Cannot say a bad word and I am very critical and very ocd fussy. Special thanks to female waitress who looked after us in the garden and Simon who was professionally attentive, can't wait to return.

We enjoyed a delicious afternoon meal at the Mermaid this week, and the staff were very friendly and attentive. We decided to sit outside on the newly covered decking which was amazing! Although it did start raining ☔️☔️☔️ we were kept cosy and dry and and able to relax and carry on with our visit. went last friday for a further visit to this lovely restaurant never disappointed with the food and service - was quite taken aback that there werent more customers there as usual i think people dont realise that the bars and restaurants are open until 10pm - hopefully they will read this and come back - otherwise we will end up in the mumbles area with bars and restaurants closed permanently !

I went for the tempura prawns and the hake from that day's specials and it was delicious. The staff were friendly and attentive and I really enjoyed the music selection that was playing. Totally worth braving the torrential rain for!
