The Selkirk Arms Bar, Bistro and Restaurant in Dumfries & Galloway

A very simple fine fare for a modest lunch- very friendly staff and decent menu. Service was prompt and well stocked bar.

Super Friday night getaway.We attended the very informative wine tasting which finished just in time for our dinner booked at 7.30pm. Steak & fish & chips were spot on as was the clootie pudding. We had been allocated room 19 which was small but well appointed. To be honest we didn’t spend much time in the room as we were out the door after our nicely cooked breakfast for bike ride to Castle Douglas. We returned in time to have a really good afternoon tea with a nice selection of cakes and fresh cut sandwiches and many cups of tea as we’re a bit dry after the bike ride. We payed the bill a departed for home feeling full up and relaxed. We will be back.

This hotel was delight. Very friendly and helpful staff. Hotel warm and welcoming despite cold and rain outdide. Our room was besutiful, lovely comfortsble bed, good bathroom with bath and shower. Nice touch was the nespresso machine and pods. Approved of the jack points on sockets for usb and tech leads. Fruit and biscuits as well. Dinner perfect from award winning young chef, we shared scallops snd risotto starter I had roast tandoori cauliflower very tasty and just well spiced. My husband said the pigs cheeks were delicious. A shared pannacotta rounded off a great meal. Excellent nights sleep was followed by a hearty Scottish Breakfast. We didn't need any more food until the evening. I can't recommend this lovely hotel too highly.

Lovely hotel and restaurant in Kircudbright. Good room and really good restaurant with bar and friendly staff. Had 2 pork bellies and starters of Haggis croquettes. Excellent food. Would recommend this hotel and the town as there are quite a few restaurants and bars. Free parking at the back of the hotel was a bonus.

We had the warmest of welcomes from several staff on a cold day. We were seated next to a coal fire and enjoyed a classic menu of tasty cock-leekie soup followed by a generous plateful of haggis, neeps and tatties. The beer was excellent too.

Food was delicious and service was second to none. Surroundings great… will definitely return!!

We stayed here for the Stargazing Weekend in November 2023. The hotel is lovely and food is excellent. The staff are friendly and helpful, and the rooms clean and comfortable. The weather was against us so we didn't see any stars - alas - but we had two informative sessions with expert Steve, a visit to the planetarium and a thoroughly enjoyable stay. The hotel is centrally located in Kirkcudbright which is lovely to visit for scenery and independent shops.

We stayed for one night, and enjoyed the most exceptional evening meal. Top quality food - locally sourced and presented wonderfully, and a great wine menu alongside. We stayed overnight and have to say the breakfast was equally brilliant. What a find!... will definitely be coming back (again...and again.) Thank you to the whole team whose attention to detail and customer service added the cherry to the cake.

Here for a few days visiting Kirkcudbright. What a super place! The rooms are very good, spotlessly clean and well appointed. The main reception rooms, dedicated to Robert Burns are really well done with lots of books and memorabilia. The staff are extremely pleasant - all of them - but would single out Eileen who was welcoming, very helpful and a constant throughout our stay. The South African chef has to be acknowledged as the food is excellent; we could not fault a thing. Would highly recommend.

Booked for Sunday lunch. Made to feel very welcome and seated quickly with very nice local drinks. The food was excellent and the service. Spent nearly 3 hours over our meal savouring every bit. ( unheard of really for us but it was that good) We will be back my wife just suggested that we should call in on our way south. After reading reviews we booked well ahead of our holiday and looked forward to a meal with high expectations. We however left feeling deflated and for 1 person hungry. This was a meal of two dishes. The Korean Chicken Burger was succulent and full of flavour with crispy chips as a side. The Risotto however contained more peas than grains of rice, certainly not worthy of the £14 price tag! Thankfully we complained and requested for the meal to be removed from the bill, which they gratefully done as well as a glass of red. Moral of the story, if you are hesitant to complain, like we are as our nature, then don't.

A high quality of food served by attentive staff in pleasant surroundings despite the Covid restrictions in place. Probably my favourite dinner spot in Kirkcudbright along with the Castle Street Bistro.

We dined here with friends last Tuesday night and were very impressed. Great welcome and the food and service were fantastic. Our friends who live locally will be back, as will we when we are next in the area.

We met our friend, who was staying here, for dinner and have to say it was excellent! Whilst the venue was pleasant but nothing special the food was truly delicious and great value.We did not stay here but we’re told by our friend that the room was fine - clean and functional but not of particular note. But she confirmed the food was all excellent the previous night also.

We enjoyed a really good lunch today at the Selkirk Arms. The cooking is amazingly good, with inventive menu items new to us. I had a beautifully cooked haddock, chips and mushy peas. I don’t think fish and chips gets any better than this. She had the salmon fillet, a generous piece of fish with very interesting accompaniments, and again, cooked to perfection. The desserts were equally impressive. I elected for the Ecclefechen tart, a superior sort of mince pie, served with vanilla cream, very rich and very moreish. She had their wonderful Alaska Bombe, a circular construction of sorbet and strawberry parfait, topped with meringue and coulis. Just delicious, and our top pick from the choices we made today.This is a great place to eat!

Finally back to the Selkirk and we were not disappointed! It has been almost a year since our last visit of which I am eternally ashamed as The Selkirk Arms is 15 minutes away from us. Anyway glad to say the welcome, the atmosphere, the service and the food as good as ever. Felt perfectly safe with the Covid guidlines, even if the pair of us went out the wrong door......So thank you again for a lovely meal and we will be back sooner than you think!

Good welcome, and we sat out in the garden for a very nice lunch. Good menu with a good choice of food and wine. Very good service Steady stream of people coming in for lunch, which is always a good sign. Prices were reasonable as well. Appreciated the nice selection of low alcohol beers too.

Dithered over where to book for our final night, cottage owner had suggested Castle Bistro or Auld Alliance as they weren’t as pricey as here but when I looked online they were on par price wise. selection looked better here so booked it. We weren’t disappointed, food delicious, not over faced with heaps of microwaved side dishes etc, staff friendly and covid restrictions adhered to - i hope they can get back to normal soon. Anyway - 1 bottle of house french red, a small white wine, 1 pint, 1 crab arancini, 1 terrine, 2 venison, 1 lamb, 1 pie, 1 Alaska bombe, 1 mixed ice cream, 1 choc delice and 1 affogato = £126 (without tip). Good value, good service and delicious food .

We had been out for a long walk and called in on the off chance we could get a table for lunch, luckily there was one available. Staff very helpful, the restaurant area was very nicely laid out, plenty of room between tables. Great care being taken regards sanitising etc.Menu had plenty to offer and quite varied for lunchtime, the service was very good indeed, efficient without being rushed. The food was well presented and tasty, didn't break the bank either. Certainly happily call in again if in the area.

We only wished we were staying in the area longer as we would have returned without hesitation.

A meal at the Selkirk is not to be missed if you are in the area. Whether it's fish or meat, it is always delicious, superbly cooked and good portions.The owner kindly gave my wife and I a bottle of Prosecco as we were on our honeymoon. Wonerful!

We visited for lunch on Friday, just turned up didn't book. We were happily greeted and soon shown to a table.The menu was great with a good selection for vegetarians. Our food arrived quickly and was absolutely gorgeous. We couldn't finish all that we ordered. I had the veggie platter which was huge but fabulous, my partner had the pie with mash he loved it.We will definitely return when next in the area.

Had dinner here the last Sat of the Covid Level 3 restrictions, so no wine with meal but enjoyed none the less. Cosy, place with good Covid precautions. The service was pleasant and efficient. Nice menu with decent vegetarian options. Food was piping hot and very tasty. Generous portions too. We didn’t have room for desert, which is a shame as they looked delicious. Lovely beer garden too and easy parking.

We dined here on the 4th may and the service was so lovely! The food was amazing, especially the venison but what really made it was the people who worked there. They were more than accommodating after we had finished our food and asked to sit outside for a drink even though it had been raining all day, they sorted the seats and brought us some plastic covers to sit on so we didn’t get wet.Definitely would recommend if you’re in the area.
