Tomatitos Tapas Bar in Powys

This is a local hub for food in Hay. Incredible tapas dishes, you can just keep ordering and sample the whole menu if you wish. The Sangria is delicious and the atmosphere is great. You can’t book so I recommend getting there for opening 4/5pm or for the second sitting at around 7:30/8pm. If there are no tables free then sit at the bar and watch the hustle and bustle… The perfect setting for food & drink with friends and there’s a reason it’s always so busy!! Cannot recommend enough

Just rolled out of this wonderful..friendly bar, Having had the most beautiful tapas plates, full of wonderful flavours and plenty of choices. We have a coeliac, vegetarian and two hungry men to feed. Highly recommended. This place has a fabulous atmosphere and we would definitely return. Thank you for the food recommendations of the lovely lady waiting on the tables (nurse by day) and the rest of the staff that were very friendly. No wonder this Bar is the hub of the town 👌 oh did I mention the deserts? You must go and try them for yourselves... 😛 d e l I c I o u s !

Ate here this evening with my partner and parents. The food, drinks, atmosphere and service were all top notch! The prices were also great! A special mention to the lady that served us (didn’t catch her name but she is a medical professional by day), she was SO lovely and welcoming! Loved her! We can’t wait to return and would encourage everyone else to visit this gem!

Fabulous. Service and food spot on - great selection of small plates with lots of veggie options. Friendly vibe. The aubergine chips with honey were fabulous . (As was everything! Pork meat balls, patatas bravas, chickpeas with spinach, roast Mediterranean veg with goats cheese..). Perfect.

Another wonderful visit to Tomatitos. Always such lovely staff, a great atmosphere and wonderful food. So much choice for coeliacs and vegetarians. Can't recommend it enough!

We had heard good things. Came with friends from hay who assured us it would be great, sadly it was very poor. Service was poor and uninterested, food was dire. No seasoning or flavour but our friends were regulars so we didn’t complain. A shame as we had high hopes.

Poor service and okay food. Seemed more preoccupied with serving drinks to the students. Went on a Friday night and service started off great but we were soon forgotten about / overlooked while a flow of students went to the bar. Had to chase someone to place an order - they overlooked our table. Food was okay but no side plates and one of the dishes was wrong. The incorrect dish was actually really nice so didn't complain. Service was generally poor and had to ask twice for the bill. All in all it was an okay bit a bit disappointing.

We were meeting up in Hay as it’s half way between families so we wanted to have food before heading back home we were going to book somewhere so I reviewed trip advisor this came up 3rd and was a walking only so I thought perfect as love a tapas. All I can say is it is what the reviews say on the tin.. No t only that the welcome you get is so friendly everyone working there were so attentive and patient with us … would definitely recommend you will not be disappointed…

Always a great welcome and the food has gone up a gear this year. And a good choice of wine too . We always have a night here when we visit the Hay

We love this place! Great food, lovely atmosphere, friendly staff, very good value - what’s not to like? Tomatillos is a real asset to Hay.

We haven't eaten at the tapas bar in quite some time, we had heard there was a new chef and were eager to try it out. The dishes have changed abit but we did feel that the one menu was getting abit stale, hence the lack of visits on our part. We were absolutely delighted with the new menu and we made some amazing choices, it was nice to see a good selection of desserts. The new chef seems to know what he is doing and obviously knows how things should be presented (we did feel the old menu was thrown on the plate abit, sorry). All in all a first class experience!

I have been eating and drinking at Tomatitos for many years; invariably, the reception has been good and the food has been great. I last ate there with friends about 4 months ago on a busy night and ,for once, I was disappointed with the food as the service was slow and erratic and the food was luke warm. I then went back after the new chef arrived a few weeks ago and, on both occasions, the food was excellent...well prepared, garnished, timely and very tasty. Its nice to see that most of the regular menu has been retained, but also to see new, innovative dishes on offer.I will continue to eat and drink at Tomatitos.

I am honestly baffled by all the good reviews on here! Staff were friendly but food was pretty awful. Maybe we were just really unfortunate or maybe we have high standards but we thought our meal was really quite bad. Some dishes reasonably nice (slaw and spinach parcels), some sort of ok (watery, tasteless squash gratin, tasteless stuffed pepper) and some truly terrible (2 tiny morsels of floppy-skinned chicken that tasted boiled, bulked out with fried potatoes swimming in water). They took the chicken off the bill. But worst of all was a crème Catalan (crime brûlée) that was totally split and grainy - really unpleasant and just wrong. But by that time we couldn’t be bothered to raise another issue so just paid and left. Really don’t know how a place can serve food this bad and seemingly still be very popular. Hay needs better!

Dogs in the restaurant. One was at a neighbouring table and actually came sniffing at my elbow while I was eating. Not service dogs. Who has dogs at the tables of a restaurant?! That's not hygienic.

Probably the best place to eat in Hay, great food. Lots of vegan options or can be made vegan, they swapped the honey for maple syrup on one of the dishes so we didn't miss out.

Great atmosphere and super friendly. Delicious food and they managed to navigate our requests to make some of the dishes vegan with good humour. Our dog was warmly welcomed. We had the suggested wine which was gorgeous too. Only gripe was the kitchen was closed by 8.30 when we wanted to order dessert. Would have been great if they’d given us a 10 minute warning! Would definitely return.

You won’t find better tapas bars, even not in Spain - reeeally well crafted variety of classic, modern and also vegetarian tapas. Staff was lovely! Besides that, the tapas prices are really reasonable, especially if we compare them to the familiar prices for tapas in Germany

Really great atmosphere, the staff were friendly, and very helpful The food was delicious, it arrived quickly and was full of flavour. There was a wide variety of dishes to chose from, both vegetarian and meat, and all very reasonably priced. The portion sizes were good too. I would say the photos of the food don’t do this place justice, it was very tasty

The 2 of us ate here on our first night in Hay, and were so impressed returned the following evening for a second bite. It’s apparently been there for 11 years, the staff are really friendly, and the clientele eclectic. Service excellent. The tapas are remarkably genuine, and a welcome change from the standard pub food all around. We had 5 sharing dishes with bread and the bill was an astonishingly reasonable £49!

Great little find for us overnighting in Hay. The place had a really lovely vibe, service was quick, efficient and really friendly and the food was delicious and very reasonably priced. What’s not to love!

A great local Spanish tapas restaurant with some twists. The tortilla was great. Calamari and fried fish good. Local beer was fab.

An all around amazing place to eat. Superb staff and atmosphere in generel I felt very comfortable eating there with my family. The food was a 5 star for me aswell I had the pork meatballs, calamari, and sweet chilli chicken wings which were all delicious. 10/10 would definetely reccomend going here, and I would go again!!!

Wahnsinnig nettes Personal, wir mussten kurz warten (man kann nicht reservieren) aber das war es absolut wert. Während ein Tisch vorbereitet wurde, konnten wir im Garten bereits das erste Bier genießen. Das Essen war sehr gut, wir hatten zu zweit insgesamt 6 Gerichte und es hatte noch jeweils eine Nachspeise Platz :)

Wonderful food staff and ambiance.

Had a 8 dishes to make a delicious dinner. Very popular so busy even on a Wed evening. Calamari was a little disappointing but overall excellent tasty dishes, especially the patatas bravas dish. Good service, by the young hopeful Politics and History student. He worked hard all evening. Good atmosphere, dog friendly but shame on the person who let their dog bark in the lower part of the restaurant, Let’s down the dog owner side.

No bookings taken so be prepared to wait with a drink in the patio area out back. On a Sunday evening in August at 6.30pm we waited 30 mins for table for 2. Menu isn't huge ( maybe 15 odd dishes to choose from) but very good. Written up on a backboard as changes regularly. Everything we ordered was delicious. I suggest 3/4 tapas per person depending on your appetite. We ordered too much! Service is also good and drinks reasonably priced.

Excellent night out. Sat outside in the pretty garden area as it was a pleasant evening. Nice mix of locals and visitors. Staff were cheerful and helpful despite being extraordinarily busy. Can't wait to go back. So we did go back again. Many times. Staff are super friendly, food is super good and the atmosphere is super great. Couldn't recommend enough. And our dog, Dottie, loved it too...

This was our second visit giving them the benefit of the doubt after a disappointing meal a few months ago. Our meat dishes, one pork one beef, both came in watery sauces and tasted identically bland. The salads were really cold and the coleslaw had a strange artificial taste. Even the patatas bravas sauce was bland. The one pleasant dish was an aubergine tagine. I would have mentioned all this when I paid the bill but they didn’t ask how the meal was. We often visit Hay but sadly we won’t be going back to Tomatitos.

While the service was attentive and friendly, the food was poor and didn’t taste fresh. I didn’t complain at the time because I didn’t want to embarrass my guest, but I was disappointed.

Great visit with superb tapas and really good beer to wash it down! Six plates between two was just right, highlights the lemon chicken tagine and delish beetroot, Mint and feta. Patatas Bravas spot on too, Lucky 7 beer was great and service friendly and quick. Loved it.

Awesome place to eat and drink. We stayed nearly four hours, sipping gin and tonic, drinking local Lucky 7 Beer (which is just amazing by the way) and we had some great tapas throughout the afternoon and evening. Met a great couple from Canada, chatted for hours! Great food, great service, and sensible money too! And happily accept cash, mustn't forget that one! Highly recommend this place! We'll be back!

Very pleasant tapas restaurant with a cozy vibe, bar, and nice beer garden out back where we waited for a table to free up for dinner. Menu had a good selection of meat and veg options, all very tasty, and everything was made fresh. The wait staff and kitchen were happily able to accommodate a food allergy. Honestly the current review photos of the food and atmosphere don't do it justice- we almost went somewhere else, but were very glad we didn't!

Great if you like potatoes. The fish tapas was ok, the rest, well below par. Great if you are a local and like poor quality food.

Excellent food and drink and fair pricing. Service good considering the staff were new. Would have given it five stars but they kept running out of menu options. I look forward to my next visit there when I hope to give it five stars. Update June 2023. I've since visited on more than a dozen times and it's been five stars all the way.

Fantastic food. So many GF options, I was so happy as I had so much choice. The calamari was great. All the dishes were lovely. There is no set menu as the dishes change so often so there is a specials board for what is available that day- some people took photos on their phone for ease of reading at their table. The food came quickly and service was great - just really busy.

We burst a tyre on our way to Tomatitos and had to hitchhike there! When we told the bar staff about our ordeal they immediately tried to help, spending much of the night asking around their colleagues and friends in and outside the bar to try and help us in every which way. All this whilst serving us absolutely delicious and well priced tapas. The best tapas bar I've been to in a very long time, felt like one in Spain both in terms of the warm welcome and the food. Hope to return and enjoy this cool little place fully hen I'm not in crisis mode!

Tomatitos is a friendly place with efficient service. We were a large group ordering a lot of tapas and it was all very tasty. There is something on the menu for everyone and a wine to match. We recommend both the red and white riojas....
