A fabulous restaurant with a great extensive emnut including fish of the day. Great service atte give but not invasive. All of this is a beautiful, old building that creates a wonderful dining experience with ambience

A beautiful dining experience with traditional, top-quality service. We enjoyed our anniversary meal here last night. We always celebrate with food. it's how I've been brought up. I've been spoiled over the years with fabulous dining experiences, and this is up there. We were warmly greeted upon entry, shown to our table in the small, oak seemed dining room. The table and chairs were not cramped to the next tables, which was welcomed. £60 pp for 3 courses was excellent value. The scallops were cooked to perfection, followed by the fish of the day; halibut. Omg I couldn't eat it all, probably due to me eating their homemade mini loaves and butter. Sorry, but I couldn't resist. Hubby had the chicken pate, followed by guinea fowl and pheasant, all cooked to perfection again. The side vegetables were tempura vegetables, green beans, toasted celeriac. Wonderful accompaniments. We asked for a break before desserts as we wanted to enjoy 3 courses which is very unlike us, but the locally sourced champagne helped lubricate the lemon curd and meringue for me, and ginger sponge and root cream for hubby. We walked the short distance home stuffed and happy planning to re visit again soon. Thank you for making our celebration memorable. Great lunch menu, loads of choice of mouth watering dishes, speciality of the restaurant is fish and deservedly so. The décor, building and layout with just a few tables, along with the first class service and the staggered time of dining all added to the relaxed atmosphere. The dishes are well thought out and well sized. For the quality of the food, preparation and service this is excellent value. Will definitely be returning.

Small restaurant which had some great dishes on the menu plus a range of fish/sea food specials. Olives and a little canape were served plus freshly prepared mini bread rolls with yummy butter plain & salted.. My wife & I picked a bottle of their house champagne and consumed this with ease...very good French blended small producer variety at a decent price. The star of the show was wild sea bass on a fricassee of shrimp & mussels with a bouilabaise liquor. Good quality products and preparation. AS "old folks" we have eaten in many restaurants across the UK & Europe however this was truly very good. Service by the staff and the Maitre D John was excellent

Fantastic …….I’ll give them five stars because I can’t give them Ten. Warm friendly at the same time professional staff….every time. Not my first visit and each time I’ve been it’s been the same experience. Quality well prepared food and at a very sensible price ……not really sure how they do it but an A1 experience.

This is a high quality restaurant with attentive staff. It is suitable for a special celebration of quiet dinner. There is a fixed price menu for around £60 with plenty, or even too much, choice. Canapes came first followed by amazing bread rolls with 2 types of butter - delicious. The lobster starter, with supplement, was sublime but I found the scallops rather ordinary and lacking taste. Fillet steak was tender and served with interesting vegetables although I felt the need to include mouthwatering braised steak on the plate a bit of overkill detracting from the main course. The strawberry dessert was served in a large quantity with the crumble base being a little too thick for comfort. However the fresh strawberries drowning in sauce that surrounded that base were unusual and very tasty. None of our party of 4 managed to finish the desserts. The bill came to around £90 each (including service) and this could be reduced by avoiding cocktails and choosing a cheaper wine. The only criticism here is that this restaurant tries too hard and less may be more. You will certainly have a great meal here.

We had a pleasant lunch. The food is good though, to my mind, a little old-fashioned with lots of different things on the plate. The squab pigeon 'special'started was delicious. Service is polite, but a little inconsistent; we had to ask 3 times for the wine we'd ordered for the mains. Otherwise, a good time had by all.

Excellent meal all 3 courses covering 6 different dishes were highly enjoyable and well prepared. Normally in reviews I itemise the dishes one by one but as the menu is about to change little point in doing so. However assuming the new menu is equally as good then it is a must for an evening out. Compact restaurant with good atmosphere , must book, service good ,efficient and cheerful , no rush to complete your meal . Parking outside if lucky or car park up the lane by the side of the restaurant. Will definitely return.

We booked the Venture for my husband’s birthday. We had not been there since it had been refurbished. They have done the refurbishment very well. The decor suits the place. The menu, as ever, was fabulous. We were spoilt for choice. A beautiful fish hors douevres, was followed by a very generous helping of turbot and asparagus with Parma ham In a delicious creamy sauce. A light pudding of meringue followed. Then coffee with home made petit fours. Considerate and knowledgeable staff added to the experience. This is a real jewel in the crown of a restaurant. Everything was faultless. Chef Toby’s cooking is superb and the range of dishes is impressive. Definitely a restaurant that can be confidently recommended.

This was our second visit but certainly won’t be our last. Not cheap but worth every penny. They just get everything right and we loved the new decor. Lovely staff, imaginative and extensive menu cooked to perfection. And an intimate cosy atmosphere. I couldn’t fault anything - even the homemade bread was amazing! Already trying to justify a reason to go back soon… so lucky to have this place within a 5 minute drive.

Back for the first time since the big C and the rebuild and it has lost none of its excellence and gained some finner points of decore. Ever had a meal so could you were lost for words? You will here, absolutely stunning, with great service in a gorgeous piece of history. Just faultless.

Called in and was extremely lucky to have the last table. (advisable to book) This restaurant is beautifully laid out and the Staff were extremely professional, courteous and helpful. The food was second to none and would say the poached salmon starter probably the best I've ever had. A real gem. A truly scrumptious experience.

This is the first time I have eaten here after the refurbishment. It was nice to see that it is still the quaint, beamed restaurant I love. Everything was spot on, as always. The food is superb. My monkfish was perfect. The staff are pleasant and efficient. The only small comment is the lack of table cloths now. I thought the place mats looked a bit cheap. A table cloth somehow gives it a bit more class. A minor criticism, and one that will certainly not stop me from going back.

I have been to this restaurant many times before but the level of service and professionalism during this uncertain and tedious times meant I had to share my fantastic experience. You are told an exact time to arrive to avoid passing other customers with a check in and hand sanitiser on entry. All the staff are wearing face coverings which makes you feel safe. Despite the restrictions due to legislation the Venture In do not fail to meet the fine dining criteria. 5* for the food quality and 5* for the service. Rare to find somewhere taking the pandemic seriously but not letting their standards slip.

There was nothing to fault and they had covered the COVID 19 restrictions superbly well.The tables were well spaced and all staff were wearing face coverings and hand sanitisers were available on all tables.Meanwhile, the food was superb. The menu was priced at £45 per head for 3 courses which also included a tidbit with olives, a bread tray and coffee with petite fours.I chose the battered mackerel as a starter and was not disappointed. This was followed by the best fillet steak I have eaten for a long time and melted in mouth! A desert of chocolate brownie and pistachio ice cream was excellent. My wife's 3 courses were equally excellent and all in all could not be faulted.Book now and you will not be disappointed.

Well what can I say, we (family of four) ordered the Venture Ins takeaway pizza for the first time tonight. We all have different tastes and couldn't make our mind up from the six gourmet pizzas on offer so we agreed to sample four of the most appealing. we shared the pizzas and we all agree they are the best tasting pizzas we have ever eaten. now we want to go back next Tuesday to try the two we missed. not the cheapest 9" pizza but certainly the best and the best ingredients don't come cheap!

We began visiting the Venture In some years ago. Initially we went for Birthdays but it was not long before we decided to add Non-birthday meals. The experience was so good!Four of us visited on Thursday 13th August for my cousin's birthday lunch. I returned with my brother and sister-in-law for her birthday on the Saturday. They had never been before but love good food and go to various lovely restaurants in London where they live. They thought the Venture In was fabulous and could not stop talking about it! If you knew my brother, you would know that he is normally quite taciturn. He thoroughly enjoyed the food and as an historian, was fascinated by the building. The Venture In never fails to delight. Toby's menus are always interesting, the ingredients of the best quality and the food delicious. John, Alison and the rest of the staff are always friendly and attentive. It is certainly the best place locally to go for a special meal. We are so pleased to be able to return for meals and look forward to going again, next month.

This restaurant has never failed to please and it was so nice to be able to visit again. It has been adapted post lockdown and the bar area now has two tables. Tables were well spaced and we felt very safe with all safety precautions taken. Everything was exceptional as usual, service with a smile and wonderful food. We will be back!!

we booked our retirement table at The Venture, second service after opening after lockdown, we hadn't been out for 2 years to dine anywhere ,and WOW what a treat, from my first mouthful of a beautiful quail dish to my pork main was simply a joy to my very particular tastebuds ,it was superb....the staff under strange circumstances were brilliant ,as too was John, who's welcome and attentive personal care was first class, a massive thankyou to you all this is the way to come back after shutdown...With a Bang

Thankyou for an exceptional meal! Light, bright, flavoursome and imaginative cooking served in style even in these difficult times. To start we had the Quail and the Pigs Brawn + the seafood hors d'oeuvres to share on the side as we where both hungry! Then fillet of beef “rare” and Iberian pork duo.Plus the “tasting of lemon” for dessert. Washed down with a bottle of Chablis and Barolo!!Great meal, great service! Can’t wait to come back again! Well, hugely disappointed with the attitude of the management. Booked to have lunch here some weeks ago, having previously attempting to book (but it was the full). Hoped to enjoy a relaxing lunch today.Sadly yesterday for medical reasons I felt it wise, for the benefit of other diners and members of staff to phone and cancel. I asked if my booking could be transferred to another date (we had a £50.00 voucher). The person I spoke with seemed to understand my situation, was very polite, but said he would need to seek the managers confirmation and the manager would phone today to confirm.I did get a call back, but with real disappointment apparently the manager was not prepared to change the conditions attached to the voucher and he would not exercise any discretion. So, despite being a responsible citizen it seems that we miss out...... all I was asking was the voucher timescale to be extended. Really disappointed with the managers attitude, he didn’t even have the curtesy to personally phone me. Shame !

We love go to the venture Inn highdays holidays and special days! Excellant food served by fantastic people , Started with drinks by roaring cosy fire and the dinning room has a lovely cosy feel . We were there for my birthday special day calls for the Venture Inn.The fish dish was superb and treacle tart must have with sorbet . The menu has something for everyone.

Food and service were wonderful. The food tasted amazing, it was beautifully presented and served by the most courteous and knowledgable waiter. All the staff were wonderfully friendly ... welcoming service with smile.The choice of food was excellent - good vegetarian options too. Good sized portions. We paid £46 for 2 courses and for a fine dining experience this was excellent value. The house Merlot was also very good indeed.Highly recommended

Excellent food and service. First time back here for 10 years or so, and definitely worth a revisit. Not cheap at £36 each, but the food is very good and its worth it. Would definitely recommend.

After hearing great reports of the Venture In we booked for five of us to try the delights of this wonderful place. We were not disappointed and have recommended it to anyone who would listen.We will be returning soon.

After being very sceptical before our visit, wondering why no menus were available to view, no confirmed prices, wondering if you would get value for money, tiny portions, being ripped off, how very pleasantly surprised was I!!!!!! What can I say that hasn't already been said, from the minute we walked through the door we were treated like royalty!! The food was amazing from start to finish, and once you had finished you could stay, enjoy the company you were with and not ushered out of the door. Absolutely amazing, been a very long time since we had the quality of food like that at any other establishment. My one and only criticism, no pink/flavoured gins, otherwise perfect!

The Venture is our local restaurant, which means that we dont have to travel far to enjoy a first class meal on evey occasion. We have known this establishment for many years and can truthfully say that the food and service has always been of the highest quality in a very welcoming and friendly environment..May they continue with this class of food and service for many more years so that we can continue to enjoy the splendid hospitality and sevice from all the staff.

I visited here on Friday 20th December... had lunch with a work friend. Restaurant was very busy with a couple of large groups, obviously having their annual Christmas lunch. Food was excellent, as was the service. Staff all very professional, but also friendly. Paid £77 for two of us, for three courses including a couple of glasses of wine and water. Not cheap, but by no means expensive for the quality product on offer. Highly recommended.

We like to come here for special occasions. The food is excellent the service great. We quite enjoy the relaxed atmosphere by the fire prior to the meal. How they manage to pack so much flavour onto a plate astounds me. I enjoy cooking at home myself , but this is another level. I was stuffed when we left. We had a 3 course lunch and it was fantastic. This restaurant is aimed at people who enjoy good food served in a relaxed atmosphere

Been here before but very disappointed with recent visit. My wife and I had a very disappointing starter. Far too oily and fishy. My main corse was excellent but my wife's main course was very disappointing. Small portions and poor quality. My sweet was excellent but my wife's was not. We were not very impressed. We spent well over £100 ( without any wine on the table ) We will not be going there again. There are many other restaurants that offer a good set menu for less than £45 per head. We strongly suggest you try one

This wonderful quaint restaurant cleverly conceals it’s secret of the most delicious food ! The menu boasts a variety of appetising dishes that proves choosing most difficult ... not to mention the ‘specials of the day’

We go to an amazing hotel in Cumbria where the food is heaven on a plate and I've always said they were the beacon for other restaurants. Couldn't find anywhere else like it. Well we did !!!!! The Venture In!!!! Beautiful food, dainty amounts elegantly presented giving the mouth and exciting run for your money. And that is just the food! The staff were friendly, knowledgeable and the service was quick while the surroundings are comfortable and not ostentatious. The chef has been there a long time and ( like in Cumbria) still has that wonderful passion for food AND IT SHOWS !!

Having tried several times to book a table here we were surprised by the simplicity of the interior as we expected something much grander,however once seated and handed menus we were delighted to find the food offered more than compensated.

My wife and I visited the Venture in September to selebrate my birthday. We have been a number of times before and have never been disappointed and this visit was no exception. The food is truely exquisit, the depth of flavour that Toby manages to get into his sources has to be tasted to be believed. The whole experience is wonderful.

All the superlative adjectives for this unique and wonderful restaurant have already been used many times so suffice it to say that yet again Toby Fletcher (head chef and owner for over 20 years), maitre d' John and the team did us proud when we went for lunch yesterday. Never ever fails to give perfection, many thanks to you all.
