Wallys Kaffeehaus in Cardiff

Just popped into this interesting Viennese-type café above the iconic Wally’s delicatessen in Royal arcade, Cardiff. Very friendly young girls serving and making a delicious selection of salads, salami and sausage dishes and sandwiches, and all sorts of other mouthwatering delicacies. I was particularly pleased with the availability of gluten-free bread, crackers, and even some sausages, for those who are coeliac or gluten sensitive, like me. This is definitely my new good find, and can’t understand why I haven’t tried it before, as I have shopped in their wonderful famous delicatessen below many, many times. And they have a top hygiene rating from the council health inspectors.

What a lovely hidden gem! We were looking for somewhere for coffee and cake that wasn’t a bar. Not easy in Cardiff. Walking through the arcade we found this hidden gem . The plum cake and the apple cake were very nice indeed. The coffee was excellent and the tea came in its own pot, along with 2 glasses of water that we thought was a lovely thoughtful touch. Usually you have to ask. Only downside is queuing for the loo but a small price to pay for such a delicious tea break! Would thoroughly recommend. One thing to note it’s upstairs and the loo is downstairs not sure about disabled access as we didn’t need it so you may need to check if you do.

Only thing I didn’t like about this wonderful place was the fact they didn’t use use Welsh butter - joy of joy they are now using Shir Gar butter the king of king spreads . Excellent food & drinks here & ten times better experience than the chains .

Found this little shop last year when we came to visit Cardiff, but unfortunately there restaurant was closed due to Covid. But this year it was open so we went upstairs to the small restaurant. We both had a hot chocolate which was very good, hubby even had a mince pie unfortunately this wasn’t German, as they don’t eat mince pies but the rest of there cake’s etc were indeed based on German food. The actual shop has lots of different types of food that are generally from Germany Austria and Belgium, and even further afield.

What a lovely little cafe! Very friendly & professional staff both in the cafe and in the deli. Lots to choose from on the menu and certainly lots to choose/buy downstairs in the shop. Definitely a place to revisit when we’re next in Cardiff.

A day trip to Cardiff found us fancying a fairly light lunch. We were simply wandering and found this place. What an amazing find. To begin with, the staff were incredibly friendly. We were planning on something quite simple each but my partner saw the sharing platters. We opted for the meat and cheese platter and were presented with a sizeable collection of assorted cold meats and cheeses, with olives and onions pickled in balsamic vinegar. Plenty of bread and crackers too. Everything was just delicious and we left, having ended up buying may of the ingredients in the deli itself downstairs. A truly brilliant surprise, finding an Austrian kaffehaus in Cardiff, but what an awesome place it is.

Great food, lots of choice, freshly prepared. Wonderful to be able to try something different. Staff were lovely and very helpful.

I don't get to Cardiff often, but this is my s first stop after getting off the train at Cardiff Central. A good alternative in decor, menu and atmosphere from the plethora of coffee shops around. Good to have a more varied coffee menu and great for a light lunch as well, am enjoying filling up my loyalty card.

The coffee is very nice and better than most. The shop upstairs is small and is clean and has nice laminate flooring but it can be difficult to get a seat on a Saturday and you may have to wait.

Really nice artisan place to go and absolutely unique with quality produce used. Amazing that you could purchase the foods from the coffee shop in the shop below to take a little piece of it away with you. The staff were friendly and very tentative and could not do enough for us when we were there. The coffee was amazing quick to be brought to the table. The food was amazing and delicious with a wide selection to meet everyone's need. It was fresh and tasty and plenty of it and didnt leave you feeling like you could eat another one but enough that you didnt feel overly full. Would highly recommend for anyone to try and would definitely visit again without a second thought.

Nothing average about the quality here or the service; both excellent & prices are good as well. The coffee is excellent & so nice having proper table service. I am saying 'average' only because of the chairs - since I started going here I have found them uncomfortable, I don't know if this was intended to stop students sitting there all day, doing their homework but it lets the otherwise wonderful place down.

Located above the excellent and famous Wallys deli is the coffee house. Seeking to remind patrons of the coffee houses in Austria. Hence a great selection of cakes and lovely snacks all freshly prepared for you. If you like your coffee Italian style then you'll need to be sure to ask for an extra shot. A real favourite of mine either before or after shopping in the wonderful deli.

Good variety of vegetarian options here. The platters are always great and the variety of coffees are fab.

Good German sandwich on rye. Tasty and healthy. Pricey for a couple of thin slices of chicken. Good service.

Downstairs in Wally’s emporium is a treasure trove of European food - it is really special just before Xmas. Upstairs is the Kaffeehaus. I love this place - the atmosphere is relaxed, gentle classical music in the background, no shouting between staff, a place where you can still have a conversation or browse a newspaper. No WiFi yet although you can log in to the White Stuff WiFi for a free hour.

Sabía de Wallys porque visito Cardiff todos los años y lo encontré por accidente cuando entré en el Deli y me di cuenta de que el Kaffeehaus estaba arriba. La comida está recién preparada y el personal es amable y eficiente. También los precios son muy razonables, creo. Tengo muchas ganas de ir allí de nuevo la próxima vez que visite Cardiff.

Fui con mi madre a desayunar y me sorprendió gratamente lo agradable que era el personal. Nos hicieron sentir increíblemente bienvenidos. Perfecto para aquellos que sufren de ansiedad ya que su hospitalidad realmente hace que uno se sienta seguro y contento.

Siempre tratamos de comer en Wally's cuando estamos en Cardiff. El menú no es muy amplio, pero todo tiene un auténtico estilo continental (¡sin sorpresas!). Y olvídate de todas las grandes cadenas: no puedes batir el café de Wally, y el té tampoco es malo.

El tema alemán es evidente, lo que me gusta cuando visitamos Alemania bastante. Buenos sándwiches, especialidades de salchichas y sopa, y un buen café. Fantástico para el almuerzo, pero parece que puede estar muy ocupado! !

Found this place by chance, great menu, great coffee and tea, friendly staff and topped off by being above one of the best Deli's I've ever been in.

Just the place in the city centre for a quick light lunch (the deli downstairs sells all sorts of delicious goodies to take home, some of which are served upstairs) or just a coffee. We have been there a couple of times now and always enjoyed the tasty platters, sausages, open sandwiches and last time a blue cheese rarebit! Cosy, always busy (a good sign), with efficient friendly staff, Wallys is a little piece of Austrian heaven.

Fantastic lunch here, I had the Innsbruck sandwich and tipsy hot chocolate. Both were delicious and substantial. The sandwich particularly was great. I'll definitely be back!

Mi esposa y yo hemos almorzado en Wallys varias veces anteriormente, sin embargo, esta es nuestra primera revisión (no sé por qué). Al llegar, nos dieron una cálida bienvenida y pedimos que esperáramos un momento mientras nos limpiaban una mesa (estaba llena y las cenas y algunos se estaban yendo). Los menús se dieron cuando nos mostraron nuestra mesa, nuestros pedidos se tomaron con prontitud sin apresurarnos, los dos teníamos la carne de res salada, esto se presentó con una pequeña cantidad de lechuga y ensalada de papas, la presentación fue excelente, y lo suficiente como para una luz almuerzo. Gran válvula, excelente servicio, y volveremos de nuevo.

Un gran lugar para el almuerzo en Cardiff. Té descafeinado disponible y excelente para sin gluten (uno de nosotros es celíaco). Dos de nosotros tuvimos un desayuno continental y el otro tenía el Salzburgo. No te olvides de visitar la tienda de delicatessen en la planta baja. Volveremos.

I visited this “Famous” coffee house in Cardiff and left a little disappointed!

Had a terrific coffee and a bite to eat here before heading back to London on the train. Great upstairs dining for a sit down coffee and warm bread. Friendly service. Downstairs, deli and specialty foods store was a wonder to browse in!

Such a unique place to eat and stock up on foodstuff and drinks to take home. The upstairs coffee house is a joy. Delicious lunches and happy smiling staff. When we return to visit Cardiff again. We will be back.

Really enjoyed our wonderful open sandwiches at a very reasonable price. I had the german ham, cheese, pear and pickle on rye and my sister in law had the beef patties in a pretzel bun with sauerkraut and various accompaniments. Really tasty and authentically German. The coffee choices were brilliant too and the service prompt and friendly. Popped downstairs to the deli then to buy some German sausages and pickles. Brilliant place and a real asset to Cardiff. Go here and support an independent.

Super deli with a coffee house upstairs. Serving delicious coffee with a variety of pastries. Re-charged the batteries for shopping and walking to the boat race village.

This charming cafe is above the famous Wallys delicatessan and offers Viennese style food which is high quality with superb service. Steep stairs, but well worth it!

Went here for lunch , having ben several times before. Never disappointed. Soup of the day always flavoursome and today tried the sausage platter, just delicious.

I’ve been in the delicatessen many times but was recommended to try the cafe by my son. Whilst briefly in Cardiff I popped in for lunch. Had the sausage platter and a very nice coffee. A really good and varied menu and great service from the team there. As the famous Austrian once said, “I’ll be back/Ich komme gleich!”

Called in to Wallys Deli and decided to stop in the cafe. What a delight. Staff were very helpful and friendly. Good choice of food. Well worth a visit.

I really liked Wallys, the kaffeehaus is upstairs from the deli and opens slightly later at 9.30. But there’s a great range of items to look round while you wait.

This place is tucked away above a beautiful deli up a flight of stairs. The menu is styled loosely German cafe culture although the decor does not really follow through on this. However this is definitely a place not to be missed in Cardiff.

We go here for a treat whenever we visit Cardiff. The menu is different and the quality of the food is superb. The coffee is the best in Cardiff and the service is wonderful. I can’t recommend it highly enough.

Enjoyed breakfast here on two consecutive days as we loved it so much. Great choice of breakfasts - I had granola with yogurt and fresh berries, yummy. Porridge the next day was indulgent and a very generous portion. Good coffee and fresh juices.

Wally's gelato (not ice-cream! Nicer and apparently less fattening!) is an experience worth devoting time - lots of time -...

I don't go to ton much but when I do I either start my visit of with a cuppa and cake or finish, at Wallsend Kaffe. The vienne served style establishment is steeped with history and a rich customer care for your visit either in Deli or coffee shop. The music, papers, service and environment are great.

Great place to stop off at during a shopping trip to get a light lunch. Would recommend getting a sharing platter

This is a real gem of a place & was brought here for lunch by friends on Sunday. It is a spacious cafe upstairs above Wally's Deli. They have an extensive breakfast and lunch menu all with an Austrian and German influence. The open sandwiches are amazing - heaving with cold cuts and come with a side of potato salad. I had a frankfurter and frikadellen in a pretzel roll (I asked if they could substitute the frankfurter with kasewurst and that was no problem) - this came with sauerkraut and German mustard and was lovely. There is an extensive drinks menu and the coffee is great - treat yourself to a Mozart (double espresso - whipped cream and brandy)! The service is attentive and quick and the atmosphere is just right of a light lunch with friends! Will be back!

Just happened upon Wallys as I walked down a narrow side street (I think its called an arcade) and decided to go in for a browse, There would be no point for me to try and summarise the range of top quality food products in stock - its simply endless and I quickly formed the impression that this establishment is one of the best of its type that I have ever seen.

Met my wife here for lunch. We were seated and ordered our lunch in prompt time. I had The Tyrol open sandwich as i really like it. Nice flat white coffee and pasteries after. We use this place tome and time again, i have nver had any problems at all as the staff all know what they are doing and get the job done. No rush very relaxed atmosphere.

My husband and I enjoyed a light lunch, he had herring salad and I had halloumi. The salads were presented attractively and were delicious.The staff were helpful and happy, so great to see smiling staff.There's an interesting varied menu which is reasonably priced.This is a great popular gem in the city centre.

With a city centre stuffed with chain restaurant's and coffee houses it is always so nice to find a local venue with some history. Service was very good with polite and attentive staff and the refreshments excellent, this is not a stuffy and chincy coffee shop but an honest well presented and nice place to eat and chill out with friends and family

Wallys Kaffeehaus is a great place in Cardiff to luncheon or grab afternoon tea and cake. They do a great selection of fruit juices, including an amazing cherry juice.

Up stairs from an excellent shop of continental eating treats, the friendly cafe serves a whole long menu full of Austrian treats, all served by smiling local staff. A great place for meeting friends or colleagues.

This kaffeehaus is a hidden gem, situated above Wally's delicatessen, which over the years has become a Cardiff institution. My husband and I shared an aufschnitt, which contained various cheese and accompaniments specially selected from the deli. I'm keen to come back and try the Viennese afternoon tea.

Great alternative to a greasy spoon! Lovely food, served in a comfortable environment. I had the Salt Beef Bagel, and it was gorgeous. Highly recommended!

This is a great choice for coffee and a cake treat or lunch. It's also an opportunity to walk through the fabulous delicatessen! I defy anyone to walk out without buying something delicious!

I have been to Wally's Delicatessen countless times and only recently decided to go upstairs and check what their little Viennese Cafe had to offer. They have a good looking menu selection for lunch but I had coffee and cake in my two visits. Who can resist their cakes?Their coffee selection is great (Einspänner is a perfect choice) and the cakes are delicious (most of them, traditional German and Austrian). The service is perfect, efficient and really friendly. The only downsides for me are the atmosphere and decor, a bit dull and gloomy.Overall, a perfect place to stop by and avoid the coffee chain pest that has invaded the city.

Was taking in the sights and sounds of Cardiff when we stumbled across this place! Feeling peckish, we could have opted for a coffee and toast and any of the highstreet chain stores, but we chose here! Wallys is a delicatessen with a small dining area upstairs. We went up and it was very busy so obviously quite popular. Fortunately, we were seated straight away. The menu has a good choice with a German feel. Lots of sausages, meats and cheeses. I opted for a platter and Mrs B an open sandwich. For was delivered in good time, with a good portion size. very tasty and very reasonably priced. If you're in town, try it - it's a welcome change

It's a really pleasant experience to visit this coffee house. It has a very varied menu. A superb service from all the staff. Lovely atmosphere and also the fabulous delitcatessen downstairs that also sells the items purchased in the cafe and is an aladdins cave of wonderful eats,treats, cheeses and meat to name just a few items on sale. A bonus card is also available for purchases made . An alround wonderful experience . Not to vemissed on a visit to Cardiff.

I was in town for training and popped out for lunch, checking my Wriggle App which has local deals. I chose the £6.95 two course lunch and £1.95 latte deals at the Kaffeehouse. Lunch was fantastic, waiting staff were really friendly. I didn't feel awkward sitting and eating alone. I had the Olives & breads to start and the Nut Roast open Flatbread sandwich for main with a gingerbread latte that was gorgeous. I have eaten at Wally's before but only the toasted panettone which was also great and inspired many in my Christmas breakfasts last year. Highly recommend

Visiting again. Australian beer for me with salt beef open sandwich. Smoked salmon open sandwich and prosecco for Lady Gaga. All as fine as ever and we bumped into friends

I had a smoked salmon crostini served with rocket leaves and avocado. It was nice but I had to ask for lemon and black pepper and no dressing on the leaves. I also had a glass of prosecco. Staff were pleasant but I think tired as it was after 3pm and they prob relished the idea of going home after a busy day.

Went for lunch. The place and food are unexpectedly brilliant. The service was brilliant. There is a great choice of food, really really tasty, definitely going back.

Wanted to try somewhere different and have always loved Wally's Deli. So, decided to try their café. We arrived at just before 1pm on Friday and it was very busy. We perched on their bar stools until a table became available. After about 10 minutes we were sat in comfort, albeit in front of the café entrance which is a bit draughty. Both of us chose soup of the day which was beef goulash, with a brie roll. Delicious, although my soup had little beef in it. Think my hubby had my share! Had excellent coffees, which are automatically served with water on the side. Excellent friendly service.

Enjoyed coffee, mocha and cakes after buying some items in the deli downstairs. Excellent food and service in a great arcade setting.

We called in for coffee and cake. I had a grosser brauner (double espresso with a dash of hot milk) and hubby had a mocha. We shared a piece of apricot and yogurt cake, which was light and delicately flavoured. The coffee was superb, just how it should be. The mocha was really good too, in other cafes they can be over sweet and sickly, but Wally's mocha is just right. Well worth a visit.

I always enjoy a trip to wallys excellent deli and I love the viennese -style cafe upstairs. It is usually busy but worth a wait. The cheese and meat platters are amazing and huge and I also love the wide variety of open sandwiches on a range of breads. Good choice of drinks too. I rarely have space for cake which I regret deeply as it always looks wonderful.

Good place for a coffee and snack, much better than the chain coffee shops. Only let down for me by the slow service. It shouldn't take that long to get tea made and a bottle of beer to the table.Overall worthwhile. And the deli downstairs is full of unusual surprise food choices to buy and take away.

Called here for a late morning coffee and a snack before going to an international rugby match at the Stadium. What a great place with a wide range of different teas and coffees as well as a whole variety of snacks e.g. Croissants, cakes and sandwiches and more substantial plates for a mail meal. The service is efficient and very friendly. The cafe is above an Aladin's cave of a shop with so many delightful food items that must be seen to be believed. What a gem.

Stopped by for lunch while in Cardiff shopping. Wonderful food and really friendly and helpful staff. Excellent value for money. A real treat! And a fabulous shop downstairs too!

A great place to escape busy Cardiff streets. It is upstairs in one of the many arcades - go through the deli.Midafternoon, and the place was relatively quiet, but service was quick, with hot coffee & sweet cakes just the ticket to slow down and people watch the arcade below. Would definitely come here again.

Had another brilliant lunch here it is a lovley atmosphere. I also had a double expresso with frothy milk just awsome. After paying i went and bought some of the coffee beans that they use in cafe.

Such a beautiful deli with a wide variety of food.Very friendly and welcoming with a lovely atmosphere. Seated promptly and given enough time to choose from the vast menu of delights.I had an open sandwich with chicken,chorizo,rocket and olives.My partner had a Frankfurter with a frikidelen. We also had a cheese and meat platter to share which was so scrummy.The coffees are the nicest we've had in South Wales so creamy and rich. My partner also indulged in a pecan pie which was delicious.Amazing friendly service with excellent food,and also came away with a bag full of goodies from the shop below.Will definitely be visiting again soon to sample more yummy treats

Stopped for a quick coffee and couldn't resist the apple strudel. Lovely coffee, pleasant atmosphere and great friendly service. Delicatessen downstairs is fantastic too, never seen a better stocked deli anywhere.

Another delightful, delicious delicatessen inspired light lunch, we had the croissant specials, mine with brie, rocket and onion chutney, my wife the turkey and avacado. They were both superb and as usual the staff were welcoming and attentive. Superb.

Often very busy, we managed to get 2 seats (high ones), the staff are very friendly and the coffee was excellent. First time to get a seat (it was Saturday afternoon) and lots of people tucking into open style sandwiches, good veggie choices too. We needed a sweet fix so I had the sachertorte and my husband had a huge gluten free chocolate cake. Bit pricey but not something you have everyday (I'd be 25 stone!). Well worth for a treat.

Having just arrived in cardiff and starting bto explore the arcades we came upon this wonderful deli with a fantastic tea and coffee shop. We enjoyed the cake of the day and a fantastic pot of tea - not to be missed

Had a really good lunch here. An open sandwich with double expresso frothy milk coffee. The staff ate all really helpful and friendly we shall definatley use this again.

A (very) small café upstairs in a deli. The food has a German/Austrian influence and great for light lunches. The breakfast menu also looked lovely. Many different types of coffee and tea were also available. The café is very small and you have to wait to be seated so sometimes the queue stretch down the stairs but the wait isn't normally that long as the service is very quick. Thoroughly recommend the mix sausage platter!. They also offer a 10% discount for students.

In need of a short break we passed Wally's wonderful delicatessen and were drawn in by the amazing range of foods on sale, from fresh meats and cheeses, to fresh ice cream and chocolates. In addition upstairs is a coffee house (Kaffeehaus) offering a wide range of teas and coffees with a German influence. The fresh coffee was delicious, though the decaffeinated alternative is a little disappointing. Service is excellent and it's well worth a visit.

Met up with some friends for a late lunch - the sandwiches all looked amazing, but I had the special "tapas plate" with chorizo, anchovies, cheese, olives etc. This was extremely nice, and I had a large pot of camomile tea to go with it all.A relaxed meal with some really interesting and different meal choices.

Whilst shopping in Cardiff my husband and I popped in for lunch. What an unexpected treat! Superb, wholesome, tasty food served by very friendly staff. Certainly worth a visit.

We went here on a Sunday for lunch, had an amazing coffee (Grozzer Brauner, a double espresso with a dash of milk). Then we both had a frankenfurter, which was amazing, was very large and delicious, with curry ketchup and mustard in a pretzel roll.We then had another coffee, because they were so good.Absolutely recommend for lunch, it's cheaper than subway or McDonald's if you just have the frankenfurter!

While in Cardiff, I discovered the many many arcades (covered venues) around the city. They come in handy if you take into consideration it rained almost too oftenly during my visit.Wallys is an old deli with a coffehouse on top. You can enjoy your senses with the many products they have in the ground floor and then enjoy a cup of coffee or tea in the floor above.I had an assorted platter of sausages, ham and cheese. The selection was good, but the bread (which they're proud of) was average. In my humble opinion a better bread could enhance the experience.The service was also ok, they seemed to be very kind with local old people. But perhaps since I was young I wasn't within their target market.

We popped into Wally's Kaffehaus for tea anc cake. it was the first time we had been there. I had Chai tea and a slice of the wonderful Rustic Lemon and Ginger cake. we sat in seats overlooking the arcade below. (Although not part of Wally's, you can see from the stairway window that there's some sort of courtyard outside that has bushes and gravestones. It's most intriguing.)

I visit Wally's Kaffeehaus regularly for a quiet lunch either with my husband or on my own. Dining alone isn't an issue here, very relaxed and staff make you feel very welcome and not rushed. Variety of savoury food from the Deli is delicious and very authentic. Cakes are nice but not amazing, but that could just be because my expectations are very high. This is a lovely spot to sit near the window and watch people in the arcade below. I would also highly recommend the deli too, the pistachio mortadella is very close to the best mortadella I've ever had in the Italian Alps.
