The dinner and breakfast at the Wheatsheaf were excellent and we would definitely eat here again The service was also first class The room did not come up to the same standard we were put in a room with an accessible bathroom which was essentially a wet room We feel that on booking the staff should have pointed this out to us as it spoilt our stay Everything got soaked and there was very little space to put anything and the floor was still wet in the morning from the night before I was concerned about slipping and had to use towels to make it safe Avoid room 8 unless you want a wet room with an unprotected shower The bed was creaky and uncomfortable and the duvet did not have a cover on but a flat sheet I hate this either use a duvet or sheets and blankets It concerned me as clearly the duvet isn’t washed every guest and a sheet moves unless tucked in so this in my opinion was unhygienic There were no tissues in the room to remove make upI had to use toilet tissue and the shortbread biscuits mentioned on the website were nowhere to be seen Such a shame the rooms are not up to the sameStandard as food and drinkOffer

Our room was beautifully clean and fresh and smelt clean as you walked in. Bright and stylish with a nice ensuite and good facilities. Generous amounts of white fluffy towels.Food and wine were gorgeous, fresh langoustine, steak and creme brulee were all fabulous as were the wine and service. Little touches like iced water already being on the table when we sat down were fab! Breakfast also lovely and hot/freshly cooked ro order. We will definitely stay again!

Recently brought some family members for lunch and were not disappointed. My step father, who has a small appetite and is put off by large portions, asked for a small fish and chips and that is what he got. It's so nice when people listen to these requests. Subsequently he managed to eat it all as he was overwhelmed by it. Thank you so much for doing that. Everybody else loved their meals too...... turkey on the 30th December is still OK with me, but that's it for turkey until December now.

We were staying at Duns castle and they generally do not serve dinner there, unless you made previous catering arrangements, so the owners suggested this lovely little restaurant. It is right on the border of England and Scotland. I had the mussels and they were very good, the rest of the company had select dinners that were not out of this world but average. It is a really cute little place and really the only place in Swinton, so being it is out in the country, we did not have great expectations but it was good

We had seen written reviews of the wheatsheaf inn and also told in person that this was an excellent eatery. We were a group of four and three of our meals were what I would call a couple of mouthfuls!!!!!!I had the tiniest bit of salmon on a bed of basmati rice ( couple of spoonfuls) with three tiny tomatoes on top. Tasteless My friend had the duck which was about 3 small mouthfuls and what looked like a spoonful of fancy potato no veg.My husband the chicken with one florette of cauliflower and 4 new potatoes and a small amount of sauce. Chicken was very dry and found it hard to eat.The only person who got a decent meal was our other friend who had the sirloin steak!!!!We were going to have dessert and coffees but because of the main course decided against it.So disappointed!!!!!!!!!

The staff at this small pub-hotel near the Scottish / English border are charming, and the place is welcoming (including to dogs). The evening menu is fairly limited but suggests some ambition, particularly with a starter that combines scallops, black pudding and samphire. Sadly, the expectation was greater than the execution: the black pudding was delicious but the samphire was cooked to the point of losing taste and the scallops were bathed in too much oil. Some of the mains were not available the evening we passed through, so I went for a simple sirloin steak sandwich. I did not expect great things and could even imagine how a little fat might add to its succulence, but the proportion of that to meat was just too high. This, though, is judging a place on only one outing, and what was clear was that it was a cosy venue with a wide array of drinks and helpful owners to guide you through what was on offer. So, there is a lot to like, as long as you do not expect top-notch cuisine.

Been to the wheatsheaf four times and thought it was fantastic the first three times so was looking forward to Sunday lunch in pleasant surroundings. What a letdown from the slightly off tasting cod to a side dish of undercooked curly kale.Has anyone ever had kale as a veg trust me don't try it.On paying the bill was asked if I had enjoyed it I replied no but that it was maybe just not my cup of tea and was told well you should of had the beef.Thought we were just unlucky but spoke to an acquaintance today and asked what they thought about the quality and content of the meal they had there last week. They like ourselves had championed the wheatsheaf as the place to eat in the Borders and all I can say is they like ourselves won't be back there. We might after a fairly long time return to see if the food has improved back to its previous high standard of cuisine but if it has not significantly improved we will vote with our feet

The complimentary bread was warm, and came with soft butter!! We took the 3 course set menu. We both had the fish cakes for starters...a little more salmon would have improved the flavour. My wife and I had a midweek lunch here to celebrate my birthday, and found it very good indeed. We have been coming here since the 1980s, when it was owned and run by Alan & Julie Reid and was absolutely superb - sadly, when they left it went horrendously downhill in terms of the quality both of the food and of the service, and we stopped using it! However, since the present proprietors took it on we have found the standard consistently high, both for small intimate occasions and for big parties, and in our estimation it is not far off the standard achieved by the Reids. Definitely recommended.

My wife & I live in the village, so have lunched/dined at The Wheatsheaf on countless occasions over the past 11 years or so.On the spur of the moment, we decided to head along for lunch on Thursday 22 December, for the first time since the new owner (Michael) & his team took over.We received a genuinely warm welcome from Ann, who took our drinks order and selection from the menu, before serving our meal, with a genuinely friendly/polite/fun manner, which made the whole experience very enjoyable. My wife chose the traditional Christmas main course of roast turkey and all the trimmings, which was very nicely presented and delicious.I started with king prawn linguini, which was absolutely superb, one of the best starters I've tasted in a long time! Perfectly cooked prawns (cut so as to spiral) and pasta, in a stunningly light & tasty tomato sauce (it'll be my main course on our next visit). I followed it with an 8oz "Gilmour" fillet steak (cooked rare/very rare) which was to die for, as it was cooked to perfection. The menu was essentially the same as it has been for a while now, but the quality & presentation of the dishes has taken a step up.There were eight other diners, all of whom provided Michael & Ann with similar feedback to ours.Congratulations to Michael & his team!We will most definitely be back (soon) and would highly recommend others, if they haven't already done so, to lunch/dine at The Wheatsheaf. My idea of Heaven . . . . I had the salmon which was cooked to perfection.Gluten free bread is available, very good Gluten free choices. We will be going back, the staff was great and very attentive and friendly. She also helped us back out.

We went for our evening meal. The service was excellent, as was the food. It was a little pricey, but it wasn't your average meal, so I guess you get what you pay for. The restaurant came recommended to us and I would endorse that recommendation to others.

I ate there with my family the night before a wedding (we also stayed there, accommodation was nice too). Unlike the rest of my family, I am a vegan and had called in advance to ask whether they could cater for vegan options. They were kind enough to ask which foods I didn't like. On the night we ate there, they had prepared a full vegan menu with three courses, two options for each! This was astoundingly good service as often there is no option at all. The choices were lovely, so much so that my husband had the vegan starter I did not choose, and my Mum had the vegan main course I did not choose. The food was really delicious too, and apparently the meat options went down very well. They also catered kindly for my two year old nephew, making sure his food was cool enough before it was brought to the table (otherwise he won't eat it at all....). They put us in a separate smaller room away from the other diners which was great because we didn't have to worry about 2yo high jinx which we find hilarious annoying other people. Altogether a great service, and lovely, lovely food.

The Wheatsheaf at Swinton is always a safe bet, the evening meals are lovely and erring towards fine dining but without any pretence and using the best of seasonal produce sourced locally. The bedrooms are clean and modern, a great place to stay.

We were looking for a beer on the rural road from Berwick to Kelso. Hardly any stopping places on the whole route, but this looked attractive. We were warmly welcomed and seated in the lounge. As we were a bit hungry to we asked about snacks, and were offered anything from the huge lunch menu which we could have without leaving our comfortable chairs. We opted for the big cheese board which went very well with our beers. Wonderful service and the bill reasonable. We shall try to stay at the hotel when we are next in the area.

We've visited here for lunch on the second day of our 500 mile charity bike ride - from Edinburgh to London for Missing People - each year for the past five years. They always go the extra mile to help. We always have a nice room reserved for us inside where riders can relax. Food is perfect for the riders and there's plenty of space outside for our bikes. We have never been disappointed. It's a great place and suits us well. Can't fault it and we'll be back next year for sure. Thanks from Ride2Raise and Missing People.

Terry and I popped into the Wheatsheaf for Sunday lunch and were definitely not disappointed. The Wheatsheaf is a typical country pub that seems to be favoured by the locals (always a good sign). We opted for the steak and ale pie, one of the traditional dishes n the menu and were pleasantly surprised when it arrived. Not your usual deconstructed pub offering, but a traditional steak pie in a stoneware dish. The portions were big, the pie tasted delicious. Real home made steak pie. Congratulations to the chef !!Service was very friendly and attentive and it was great value for money. What else could you ask for.

I had stayed and eaten at the restaurant several years ago,and i always remembered the food was excellent and you had to book well in advance, and it was a very popular place with lots of locals, on a recent visit which i admit was mid week, the only diners appeared to be residents, but the food was just as excellent in flavour, the service is excellent and the place itself is very nice to eat in. I had Sea Bream, it was presented lovely and tasted very nice, but where was the rest of my £17.50. Sea Bream. as i only got one fillet, and there not very large on a Sea Bream, and Whole Sea Bream are not that expensive. Nouvelle Cuisine was a 1960s fad, so if it is returning, perhaps 1960s prices should be appropriate. This is the Borders where value for money has a large influence, but also the ability to pay for a reasonable amount of food, of a good quality, at the right price is not an unreasonable request, restaurants don't buy half a Sea Bream, so why only serve half if not to only save on costs, increase there margins and decrease there customers, its a false economy.

From the moment we arrived to the moment we left we received impeccable service! We stayed for 1 night last week, arriving late afternoon on a crisp winters day. After being told upon checking in that there would be a roaring fire going shortly we had a stretch of the legs around the beautiful green opposite to the return hastily to enjoy drinks by the fire. The evening meal was delicious as was the wonderful breakfast the next morning. Many of the foods were locally sourced and/or homemade. From tasty shortbread, jams, chutneys, bread and granola, well prepared drinks, cozy rooms with wonderful views, wonderful service;!this truly was an idyllic stay in the Scottish Borders.

We had an itison overnight dealhere, last night, which included dinner, breakfast and a bottle of prosecco.I had seen the hotel and thought it looked lovely, plus, as were wanting somewhere to stay so we could meet up with friends who stay in Berwick From the minute we arrived we absolutely loved everything! We were warmly welcomed and shown to a lovely room, which was in the annex of the hotel, but that wasn't a problem. We sat in the cosy lounge with a pre dinner drink, beside a lovely roaring fire. Then we had dinner and this was absolutely superb! Top quality food, cooked to perfection, served by a very efficient and friendly young waiter. Next day,the breakfast lived up to the standard set the night before. Altogether, it was a really lovely stay and we will certainly be back!

This was the sixth time we'd visited The Wheatsheaf and everything was just as good as on our previous visits. We'd taken advantage of one of their great offers and booked dinner, bed and breakfast in one of their executive rooms. The room was a good size with a very comfy bed and every amenity needed for an overnight stay but the main reason we were there was for the food and we certainly weren't disappointed. I had King scallops perfectly cooked and served with beautiful little crisp cauliflower beignets, and little dots of cauliflower purée and port wine reduction, along with very finely chopped raw cauliflower. The combination of flavours worked brilliantly and I could have eaten a whole plateful of those little beignets. My main course was one of the best dishes I've ever eaten and I don't say that lightly. I had venison served with potato dauphinois, creamed cabbage, beetroot purée and a dark chocolate sauce. The venison was soft, rich and unbelievably tender, the different textures and flavours of the vegetables complimented it perfectly but the star was the sauce which was deep, rich and ever so slightly bitter which cut the richness of the venison to achieve the ideal balance. This chef is top class! My husband's pea and ham soup was rich and smooth and packed with flavour while his sirloin steak was cooked exactly as requested, rare with a deep charred crust. The Wheatsheaf has a really good wine list and you're able to buy lovely wine by the glass so it's possible to match decent wine to each course without breaking the bank. The staff are friendly, helpful and nothing is too much trouble for them, we were warmly greeted and shown to our room and the waiting staff couldn't be faulted either in the bar, at dinner or at breakfast. I can't imagine a better experience than a short break at the Wheatsheaf!

I had to drive had to drive over 40 miles at last minute to collect my boyfriend from his work on a Friday night. The only way that my boyfriend could persuade me to do that was to promise to take me to a restaurant for dinner. Suffice to say, he was in his scruffy overalls! We walked in to the Wheatsheaf and the first thing you see is a big welcoming open fire, that particular night, there was also two dogs that belonged to guest, that were sitting in lounge chairs. Very homely. We were seated in the main restaurant which is the conservatory - with the other guests - which surprised me, considering the way we were dressed. I had expected to be seated in a corner. The menu has a good and varied selection which caters for all. The menu offered a large selection of game and fish. The presentation of the food was very classy. The food itself was to a high standard, the chef is very imaginative and talented. My only minor gripe, was that they are very begrudging with the bread for the soup and the oat cakes on the cheese platter. Both courses were amazing though! An expensive night out....2 x 3 courses and NO Alcohol or coffee's @ just over £80!!However, I did enjoy the meal. We were made to feel valued and the surroundings were relaxing. Thank you to the staff.

Decent menu choice though we were disappointed that there was no crab.A particularly good scallop starter. Super mains. Possibly the best fillet steak ever. Venison was a little overdone for "rare". Good "by the glass" wine choice. Much more extensive than is the norm. Service was o.k. though a little impersonal and rushed

Another Sunday, another Sunday lunch, this time in the pretty Borders village of Swinton where The Wheatsheaf overlooks the village green. But this is no tourist trap, so you have to be looking for a meal to pick it out. The building is quite anonymous from the outside, and pleasantly Scottish within, with a comfortable bar and sitting area, and a delightful small dining room. Instead of a specific Sunday lunch we were offered the whole menu to choose from, which includes a single-choice lunch at £12 before moving through the bar/grill and main menus, the latter of which is significantly more expensive. But with plenty to choose from we selected starters of blue cheese souffle, and scallops served with deep-fried battered cauliflower, unusual and delicious. Our mains were gammon and fish & chips from the bar menu, and an expensive turbot from the main menu. I can only say that all of us thoroughly enjoyed our food - hot plates too! But when it came to the deserts we were bowled over by the presentation. You would expect sorbet, tarte tatin, banana split, and apple crumble to be boring fare straight from a supermarket - not a bit! The inventive presentation and gorgeous taste made a fitting end to a wonderful meal. There is no arguing that some elements of the Wheatsheaf's menu are expensive, but we felt that what we chose was thoroughly worth the cost. It is several years since we last ate at The Wheatsheaf and we always got an excellent meal. Nice to see that some things stay the same.

My main course was actually outstanding, a few of us went for the calves liver and I have to say it was the best I have ever had, cooked to perfection (pink), followed by an amazing dessert. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed their meals. Many thanks to Chris, Jan and the team, for another excellent evening and already looking forward to our trips back to Scotland in 2016
