22/02/2017: I was a little sceptical of the whole concept of Aizle - "we have no choice of menu or ingredients" , but I now completely understand, and this is a concept that many restaurants should pursue. The results are extraordinarily good. My guest eats fish, but no meat. Not a problem! Her amuse bouche had mushroom, with truffled egg yolk and umami, whilst mine had confit chicken. My main course had two types of Orkney beef, whilst hers had Orkney scallops. The menu is varied, and usually with an outstandingly different ingredient. The bread was homemade sourdough, but with onion salt, which was nothing short of brilliant.Everything was perfectly cooked, but not every dish was absolutely memorable. I would urge them to concentrate on more memorable flavour rather than presentation. For instance, two minutes after a beautifully cooked pumpkin agnolotti, I could not remember the flavours. Plus, there is too much foam - very 2000s.However, I am being very picky only because Aizle is so good, and close to perfection. The wine list is very well chosen, with quite rare makers that you will not find elsewhere. The service is delightful, charming and very well informed, with a genuine interest in food. The ambience is simple, but attractive. In summary, this is an exceptional place that I expect to go very far. It has the potential to become something of a star. Our last Michelin starred restaurant experience was a three star restaurant in Napa Valley. Aizle beats them hands down.Go before it is impossible to get a reservation, and before the prices double or treble.

The Kitchin

Leith, Edinburgh, City of, >100£
24/02/2017: My husband and I went for a lunch with paired wine. The ambience and great staff are certainly a credit to the establishment. The meal itself had a few things that did not meet our expectations but the taste was truely delicious. I had the beef bavette as a main which I know is not a top cut and can be tougher than other cuts but it was definitely chewier than expected. My husband had the hake which he felt was slightly over cooked and a little dry. The hake came with a sauce but he felt that the quantity was too small for the size of portion and amount of celeriac puree. The fresh bread loaf was fairly large and presented in a very nice tartan container--we did not finish it. It was served with only one portion of the handmade butter which if we had wanted to eat it all would not really have been sufficient. The wine pairings were very much enjoyed and we have been to several of the countries and areas that many of them were from so that added to our enjoyment. Some of our points may seem trivial to some but expectations were very high of this restaurant and not all were met and to not mention them would mean that our view would not be considered. It most certainly will not prevent us from returning again.
21/02/2017: Had a delightful birthday lunch here today with my husband. A true taste of the best of Scotland. I was on a mission to try "Spoots" (Razor Clams) and was not disappointed when I had them for my starter. From the moment we arrived, to the moment we left, the food was first class, the service was faultless....every member of staff doing their utmost to make our visit a memorable experience. What made it even more special, were the little, personal touches....a signed Birthday card to me, from Tom Kitchin on our table, and when we were too full to order dessert, a plate saying "Happy Birthday" written in chocolate, with a small chocolate mousse ......candle and all, served up with our coffees. So thoughtful and much appreciated. Thank you to all the supremely talented staff....both in the kitchen and out, and to Tom for creating such an absolute gem of a place! Only slight niggle......the ambient's a wee bit overpowering, especially in the bar area, and if it had a Scottish lilt to it, it would be much more suited the the wonderful surroundings.

Locanda De Gusti

Sighthill / Gorgie, Edinburgh, City of, 20-30£
22/02/2017: We visited here yesterday evening. What an amazing find! The food, atmosphere and service were all superb. The menu was fabulous- if you're looking for an authentic Italian experience (Naples) then this is the place to be. The ingredients are perfection. When we come back to Edinburgh we'll be visiting again - It'll be top of our list.

Number One at The Balmoral

City Centre, Edinburgh, City of, 60-100£
24/02/2017: What an amazing dining experience! The perfect mixture of attentive, but not intrusive, service and the most delicious meal I have ever had.We chose the taster 4 course menu with the the matched wines. Glen, the sommelier, was fantastic and clearly loves what he does and I came away with a list of potential wines to buy.Our waiter; Anton, was super efficient and his knowledge on cheese and what would compliment it allowed a perfect end to a wonderful meal. All in all, one of the best dining experiences of my life - ambience, service, quality of food were all exceptional.
19/02/2017: Our entire experience here was fantastic, I couldn't recommend it more highly. The service was faultless and the staff are friendly and welcoming. It didn't have an air of stuffyness that you can get in some fine dining restaurants. The sommelier was very helpful too.The food absolutely delicious and so filling - we had the 7 course taster menu which gave a perfect selection of the menu. It's not cheap as you'd expect for a restaurant like this, but so worth the money! An absolute must if you're looking for great food.

Purslane Restaurant

Inverleith, Edinburgh, City of
25/02/2017: Had a wonderful meal. My husband had been before and wanted me to experience the delicious food. I wasn't disappointed. Had the haddock starter, which had so many tastes and flavours as well as a fun presentation. The waiter was superb and very knowledgeable about the food and wines. Hubby had the scallops and loved them - though he did wish he had my haddock. I had cod and hubby had lamb for our main. Once again, the flavours were unbelievable, every mouthful delivered a different combination of tastes. We finished with the cheeseboard between us and left satisfied with a belly full of good food and hope of returning again very soon.
22/02/2017: We enjoyed the 7 course tasting menu with wine pairings. Every course was outstanding and cooked to perfection. The scallops ,sea bream and Guinea fowl were particularly delicious. Alessandro was front of house and delivered an excellent device. He explained the wine pairings beautifully and worked extremely hard. A lovely unstuffy atmosphere. Truly an evening to cherish.

25/02/2017: We came here based on a recommendation of a local. It was already on my list because of the reviews here. We were not disappointed. We were served by Jess and she was great. She helped us pick out our cocktails and she was spot on. I had the Rose Garden and it was delicious! Amazing flavors. For dinner we had the Mac Attack and the Royale with Cheese. It was amazing. We went back again before we left and had the pair of platters. And another cocktail. Sent my parents and they loved it! Need to go back!
20/02/2017: Went with two of the lads who know good grub.Fantastic eggs, soda bread and haggis.Few nice recommendations on the craft beers too.Lovely little find and will return!

Terrace Restaurant

Livingston South, West Lothian
21/02/2017: This is a student run establishment attached to the College and serves top quality food at incredibly low prices. The menu was varied and each course was presented beautifully, served very professional and tasted delicious. The desserts were outstanding: my apple tart with ice cream was to die for!I highly recommend you book early as it can be fully booked for weeks in advance.
16/02/2017: On 27th January 17 I thought I was going with three freinds from work for a meal at The Terrace restaurant. When we arrived were ushered along the corridor to a room full of my freinds from work. It was laid out beautifully with tealights and lovely flowers. Audrey who had organised the use of this private room was very welcoming and all of the students were very polite and freindly. They were very well organised. The meal was absolutely delicious, well presented and plenty of choice. We had a fantastic night and were delighted with everything. I would recommend it to others and hope to go back in the near future. Top marks for everything.

North Berwick Coastal, East Lothian
22/02/2017: It was our friends birthday and so we two couples had lunch at Osteria on a Friday. The place was busy as usual but as always the front of house staff were brilliant. They are genuinely first class. We all ordered three courses from the lunch time menu and each of us thoroughly enjoyed what we had. Like the staff, the food is first class. We have been coming here for about eight years and it never disappoints.
16/02/2017: We took my mother-in-law and my 9 year old daughter for a special meal out on Saturday and had our first adventure to Osteria. We had a brilliant night - the staff were so welcoming; Angelo and Stefano were charming and lived up to the local hype! We had Prosecco, calamari, an amazing aubergine starter, fish of the day, spaghetti, Chianti, laughter and homemade ice cream - a winning recipe for a wonderful family meal.

Restaurant Martin Wishart

20/02/2017: This restaurant has just jumped to 1st place in our favourite places to eat while in Edinburgh, not really sure where to start. Leith is a great up and coming area with nice cocktail bars, fish restaurants and a couple of Michelin star restaurants, not bad!We opted for Restaurant Martin Wishart and we were not disappointed! The hardest choice was choosing which Tasting Menu to go for, the Vegetarian sounded amazing, although neither of us are vegetarian we gave this careful consideration, however opted for the Tasting MenuTASTING MENU, SIX COURSESAMUSE BOUCHEROSE VEAL TARTARE Foie gras, potato & wild mushroom, hazelnuts SHETLAND SQUIDPuy lentils, Lomo de Bellota and rouilleWARM SMOKED SALMONParsnip, verjus and smoked butterGLAZED ONGLET OF BLACK ANGUS BEEFComté and bone marrow crust, braised short rib & French beans Lyonnais, Bordelaise sauceDULCEY CHOCOLATE CREMEUXPraline, passion fruit sorbet, dehydrated chocolate mousse, clementine juiceLEMON CREMEUXYuzu crème fraîche, lime sorbet, honeycomb, lemongrassWe chose a cheese course in place of dessert as we couldn't quite manage both! Six Course Tasting Menu with Wine Flight £120, well worth every penny! We cannot wait to return to try the Vegetarian Tasting MenuStaff as previously mentioned are extremely knowledgeable and friendly, nothing is too much trouble for them
19/02/2017: This is how fine dining should be could not fault anything. As soon as we were approaching the restaurant somebody was at the door to open it & welcome us coats off & taken straight to our table to be met by more staff who settled us in at our table.Whilst looking over the menus we both had a gin & tonic with a French gin which was great & we really liked it. By the next day we had forgotten the name of the gin but no worries a quick email to the restaurant who relied with all the details. Have been to lots of restaurants that have tasting menus but this was the first that had three different ones, Meat/Fish, Fish Only & a Vegetarian, & you can have a mixture of the menus at your table which if you have the wine flight makes it interesting for the sommelier. Wife choose the Meat/Fish & I had the Fish one.All the food was well presented, perfectly cooked & tasted fantastic each individual flavour combing very well to make the complete dish perfect. The wine pairings matched each course perfectly with subtle changes to the taste of the food exactly what you want. Course were well spaced out taking just over three hours for the 8 courses as we had the cheese board between us.Service was excellent the whole evening very attentive but not in your face. I had picked up my wine glass as I thought I had seen a pattern in it & was looking at it at different angles under the light only to be told by my wife to put it down as the waiters & waitresses were all gathering around as they thought there was a problem with it. But this goes to show that they are attentive & take pride in their work. This goes down as one of our best dining experiences & highly recommend it to every one. We are of to try Martin Wish art on Loch Lomond soon as it is only 5 miles from where we live.

City Centre, Edinburgh, City of
25/02/2017: Went here for a quick drink and tasting platter before a show. Great value. Had a bottle of Prosecco and a large cheese and meat sharing platter for £40. Very friendly staff and cosy location.
25/02/2017: We were taken to Pickles by friends. Not sure what to expect, it was great experience, lovely nibbles nice wine with an interesting menu. I will certainly be back as I have only sampled a little of what it has to offer.

23/02/2017: Brilliant brunch at this cafe, not very healthy if you ask me but certainly delicious and we'll proced. There is parking and thankfully they accept reservations.
18/02/2017: Once you read through enormous menu, the eating is pure joy. Brunch was great, nothing to add. Sweet fries is a must try.

Yeni Meze Bar

City Centre, Edinburgh, City of, 20-30£
25/02/2017: We visited last night and would definitely recommend Yeni Meze! The food was incredible- we got one of the banquets for £20.50 each and we were absolutely full, and very satisfied. The aubergine dishes were our personal favourites! Ambience was lovely and staff were very friendly and attentive.Would definitely go back!
25/02/2017: Booked an early table after reading the other reviews. Within an hour the place was full. Really tasty meme which tasted as good as when we were in Turkey - amazing prawns. Main courses were tasty but not as spicy as we thought they may be. However we still enjoyed the food & the Turkish delight to finish with. Staff attentive & a nice atmosphere. Glad we gave it a try.

Dubh Prais

City Centre, Edinburgh, City of
24/02/2017: Dubh Prais does good quality Scottish cooking with good quality Scottish produce. There is nothing especially original about the dishes so I wouldn't dine at Dubh Prais expecting anything too cutting edge . However I would dine there if reliable, tasty Scottish dining is what is is desired. Dining area is small and intimate which makes for a cosy and comfortable ambience.

Three Birds

Meadows / Morningside, Edinburgh, City of
23/02/2017: We revisited our favourite restaurant in the centre of Edinburgh and were not disappointed. Even on a Thursday evening the small space was relatively busy but service was as always excellent... Menu choice is more than adequate for all pallets and the quality of food is excellent. We ordered a 3 Birds sharing platter for 2 after our starters and were not disappointed when it arrived as iit was the "mother load" of platters! Absolutely great dining for a good price. Tried the birds, loved it - and also tried their sister restaurants at the apiary which was also very good, can't wait to try the newest addition to the birds and the bees (educated flea). If you are out in town then this is definately worth a visit.
21/02/2017: Very nice environment. Waiters and waitresses were extremely kind to us. Service was great. Our starters were very tasty. The main dishes were fine but not super special. The curry was so so.
