The Cobbles - Freehouse & Dining

Kelso and District, Scottish Borders, >100£
19/03/2017: A group of us, over twenty had a very pleasant lunch. Good food and nice atmosphere and catered for a reasonably large party with all being served within a few minutes.
16/03/2017: Me and the other half paid a visit while on a day out in Kelso. Chose this establishment after reviews on Trip Advisor, looked good from the outside and was a Best Bar None Gold Award winner. Went in and found the staff friendly welcoming and helpful. The establishment itself was airy, fresh and welcoming. Ordered the Angus burger and pulled pork. We were advised how long it would take to cook the burger and asked if this was ok. 20 minutes wasn't long and we'll worth the short wait. Food was presentable and tasted absolutely delicious. Would recommended this place to anyone and will be visiting again if and when in the area.

Casa Mia

Mid and Upper Nithsdale, Dumfries & Galloway
19/03/2017: We visited as a family of 26 for a surprise birthday lunch. Most of the guests had been before and thoroughly enjoyed their meal. However, on this occasion some were left feeling a little unsatisfied with the meal. The starters went down a treat all except the bruschetta that was for a more unique taste I'd imagine. The mains were of a large portion which was fantastic and they came out pretty quick after the starters dishes had been taken away. Can't fault the mains atall. There wasn't much choice when it came to puddings. Sadly there was what looked like a pubic hair in one of the cheesecakes. This was disgusting and enough to put anyone off their food let's be honest. The waitress did apologise but at this point a replacement pudding just wasn't going to go down very well. The beer that was in the deal was a tequila beer and all the drinks were kept coming. Sadly a couple of the bottles were out of date only by a month however this should not be being served to customers it's just unacceptable. All in all it was a successful meal minus the hair and out of date beer! Sadly, Not too sure we would rush back as it seems to have lost a little bit of their usual touch.
19/03/2017: Fantastic food and drink at reasonable prices. Set menu had plenty of choices. Seemed to be clean plates all around at the table we were at - there were 4 altogether. Will be back - possibly consider as a choice for group meal.

The Clansman Restaurant

Wigtown West, Dumfries & Galloway
05/03/2017: Been here several times and the food and service have always been top notch. They have a very good choice on the menu and everything is fresh and lovely.
03/03/2017: We were recommended to eat here by the owners of our B&B, and it didn't disappoint. Great food, happy to do two starters instead of starter/main for my wife who has a small appetite. Friendly and efficient service, decent beer and wine, surprisingly busy on a Wednesday night in early March, so booking is advisable.

The Selkirk Arms Bar, Bistro and Restaurant

Dee, Dumfries & Galloway, 30-45£
13/03/2017: Had a lovely dinner here. Starter of scallops with a side order of sweet potato chips was delicious. The helpings are very generous. Service was also excellent
08/03/2017: A family early Christmas lunch and we all enjoyed our meal, as always, good food and great service, always very comfortable and a nice festive feel to the hotel.

Annandale North, Dumfries & Galloway
18/03/2017: Called in for lunch on our way home having been there last year for dinner. We both had the ploughman's with ham which was delicious and very reasonably priced. Had a nose at the new gin bar they have opened and it looks fabulous. Can't recommend this place enough, food setting and service are first class
17/03/2017: Just returned from our 4th/5th visit to this wonderful restaurant. Without question enjoyed one of the finest dinners I've had the pleasure of eating (and I include the so-called world's greatest in London, Paris, NY etc. etc.). Who would have thought it would take a trip to Moffat Scotland to find the 8th wonder of the world! Service was first class also.

The Rialto

East Berwickshire, Scottish Borders
18/03/2017: Visited here whilst in a day trip out with my Mrs. Never been to Eyemouth and wanted to see what everyone was going on about. When I first saw the Rialto I was impressed with the bay window seating, the people there were lounging and looked very relaxed. We decided to give it a try. As we sat down the owners came over for a chat, a very friendly couple who made us very welcome indeed. My wife and I ordered a tuna melt pannini and coffee, probably the best panini i have ever had absolutely delucious, the coffee brilliant too. Wee gem, give it a try. On leaving the owner advised us of a local harbour,Burnmouth which he said looked like something from Moby Dick.We visited that too !
16/03/2017: Passing through Eyemouth on the way home and happened to call in here. Lovely atmosphere and fantastic owners, they were constantly helping out their elderly clientele and checking everyone was happy. The special coffee brewed on a Chemex and the chocolate and raspberry torte were delicious!

Allanton Inn

East Berwickshire, Scottish Borders
14/03/2017: This is a lovely place to have a meal or just a drink ,we had lunch and couldn't fault it at all ,the staff was very helpful and pleasant , by the time we left all but one table was taken which says how good it is ,would definitely recommend,
20/02/2017: I always enjoy a meal here while visiting in the area and am never disappointed.Locally sourced food is a big attraction for us and the menu is never predictable or boring but instead varied and interestingAs usual we were not disappointed .My vegetarian sweet potato beetroot frittata with puy lentils etc and my son's roasted rabbit dish with chive mash and winter roasted vegetables were excellent. The Inn is very attractive externally and internally with many interesting local things to look at.Looking forward to my next visit already!

Restaurant At House O'Hill Hotel

Mid Galloway, Dumfries & Galloway
26/02/2017: Met with my brother to visit Bruce's Stone and to dribble whisky over our late Daddy, God Bless him.On arrival, very warm welcome and immediately fell in love with a limited edition print by a local artist....hence the fortune but actually very reasonable at £80 for a great print of some "Belted Galloways" now on our wall in Oxfordshire and looks great.Menu looked great but we're not there for food, wine was nice though!!See you next time and thanksXxxx
10/02/2017: Very solicitous. Honest on booking that the main restaurant was being refurbished and so offered the "snug" which had 4 tables and a fire: most welcome with the freezing weather. The menu was interesting with plenty to chose from. The highlight was decidedly the braised ox cheeks in sticky sauce. Will definitely go again and be first on my list when visiting the area.

Coltman's Delicatessen & Kitchen

Tweeddale West, Scottish Borders
17/03/2017: Finally managed to take my husband for a wonderful meal in Coltman's! The food was out of this world! The lamb was cooked to perfection! The cocktails also were a highlight! Staff were fantastic and attentiveHighly recommend
17/03/2017: While in Peebles for a birthday we selected Coltman's for a quiet birthday dinner that would accommodate our different diets (one person being vegan). Since the dining room is reached through the front cafe, it doesn't present itself a place of fine dining. But it is. Just don't expect too much in the way of atmosphere or even cosiness (it was February and the room felt chilly, but less chilly than the upstairs bar which bordered on cold.) The food was good, the wine choices utterly acceptable. So "recommended" but go for the food, not the atmosphere.

Dee, Dumfries & Galloway, <20£
13/03/2017: Never seen such a lovely range of different fish. All so fresh and tasty. Polar bites is so handy just next to the harbour square, exceptionally clean friendly and if you want to eat in it also has a licence so you can book in and take your own bottle of fizz.
10/03/2017: Visited quite by chance on a day out to Kirkcudbright and what a find it was. Apart from the traditional offerings for a fish and chip shop they had some fantastic surprises such as monkfish pan fried in rosemary butter and sweet potato chips. Everything cooked to order and so fresh. Staff friendly and efficient and the restaurant was modern and bright. Good one!

The Smithy

Cavens Arms

Nith, Dumfries & Galloway
17/03/2017: As long as you are not looking for a cosy little pub this will do you fine. This is a typical, large(ish) modern bar with all the attendant qualities. It has all the benefits of a Wetherspoons type bar while retaining an individual character. It's not the sort of pub I'd use as a local, but perfectly fine for a pint.
16/03/2017: Friendly staff. Nice atmosphere. Good service. Very tasty food. Overall decent value topped off by good beer

Lochar, Dumfries & Galloway
14/03/2017: Always have lovely meal here. Staff are very friendly.Have been for meals with friends, work colleagues and for special occasions . Same excellent service every time
13/03/2017: Another great night of good quality Italian food. I've been going to Brunos regularly over 45 years & never been disappointed. There is always a warm welcome from the waiters who either take you straight to your table, or if you prefer, into the bar for a drink while you peruse the menu. Never are you rushed - the staff are there to serve you until late.

Your Sweet Home

Nith, Dumfries & Galloway
08/03/2017: My husband and I stopped in here for a morning coffee. What a little gem this is....start with friendly greeting by Mirka, follow with excellent coffee and very, very lovely Polish cake(with chocolate icing) and that's pure happiness. Thank you, Mirka. We smiled all the way home.
23/02/2017: We visited "Your Sweet Home" yesterday after purchasing a tumble dryer in a nearby shop. The tearoom was so comfortable with nice basket chairs at a lot of the tables. We had been given a voucher for a coffee which would be very welcome. I asked for a decaf coffee which was not problem and my husband had tea. We decided not to have cake. The lady owner was completely charming and in conversation I spoke about the excellent service we had buying our tumble dryer and we realised that it was her daughter who had served us there. She was pleased that her daughter had been so helpful. She showed us two books of photos of absolutely beautiful and intricately decorated cakes she had made - cakes for all occasions. Later she came over with a piece of cake for each of us - from her. It was so delicious and there was quite an array of lovely cakes on view. We said we must pay for the cake and the tea and gave the coffee voucher but she would not hear of it and would not take payment. We went home talking about it all the way and felt we would certainly return for a lunch snack in the future. The menu was so modestly priced - especially things like Toasties. She gave us a card and we noted that she opened from Tuesday until Saturday from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. We would certainly recommend this venue.

Community Hub

Annandale East and Eskdale, Dumfries & Galloway
26/02/2017: Our family holiday has started in disastrous fashion. We were seemingly stranded with a flat tyre, without a spare and no phone reception. Fortunately, we had made it to Eskdalemuir with the help of some foam in the tyre. I noticed that there was a community hub when I looked at a sign on the bus stop. Sandie in the hub allowed us to use the telephone and we were eventually able to make contact with a garage that could come out and replace the tyre. It was a huge relief as we didn't know where to turn. Sandie was so friendly and I learned a lot about the hub and have a real sense of the way that it offers a crucial service to the surrounding community. We would love to return to the hub soon when the cafe is open but the children certainly appreciated the warm fire and shelter, as well as the tea that was available. Thank you so much!
07/10/2016: After a wonderful journey to the Hub at Eskdalemuir with stunning scenery and sunshine, we were met with a friendly face at reception before entering the csfe where we found a mixed reception. No greeting, no indication of whether it was counter or table service. Too late for a meal, coffee and cske was ordered. The latte was one of the best I have ever had and the cake delicious, however, it was help yourself to cake from a plastic serving dispenser with tongs, I would rather have been served my cake and from a chilled cabinet. The building is superb but lacked a little atmosphere and it would be nice if the staff engaged in light conversation as I imagine most visitors will have made a special effort to travel to this venue.
