Pysgoty

Aberystwyth Rheidol, Ceredigion, <20£
20/02/2017: Two of us ate at this restaurant on a Saturday lunch time. The food was very good, freshly prepared but for a restaurant which advertises GLUTEN FREE options choices were limited which was a pity considering an advanced booking had been made telling them one of us required gluten free, a training issue perhaps?Generally I would suggest the food we ate was very good, but We weren't wowed
19/02/2017: We ate at Pysgoty on a Friday lunchtime, having found it very near the car parking on the Promenade. Yes, it's small, only four two-person tables plus seats at the Bar but it's well worth the visit and I really think the smallness gave the restaurant something extra. The food is excellent, well presented and the ingredients very local and very fresh. The menu even tells you the number of the boat which caught your lobster or fish! I had the Sailor's Scotch Egg (mashed potato, very light with a curry mayo) and my husband had the fish soup. Both were excellent. Then I had crab risotto and he had the lobster. For dessert we had a Chocolate Mousse and the Welsh cheese board. Even the biscuits were local! As one of us was driving we just stuck to a glass of white wine each. The venue is very stylish: one of you gets the sea view but the one on the banquette still sees it in the long mirror behind the Bar. You are by necessity near the kitchen which makes the whole eating experience very immediate. There is no room for a loo here but don't worry, the public one I was directed to is just 20 yards away and perfectly clean and tidy. Don't let that put you off: the food is worth it. They also have a fish shop in the town where we later bought dressed crab, samphire and mixed smoked fish.

The Checkers

Montgomery, Powys
25/02/2017: I'm actually quite sorry to write this as we have been to this restaurant a couple of times and had a lovely experience. The food and tasting menu is wonderful, well cooked and well balanced. So what changed for us to now only give 3 stars? Basically the service. Whilst the staff are friendly, the idea that everyone comes down to canapés at the same time and then gets seated at the same time, makes it feel more like school dinner time than a Michelin star restaurant experience. Why is it done this way? It can't be for the benefit of the customer who n our case were left feeling we were actually dining as part of a 5 table group of diners - each time waiting for the others to finish before the next course arrived. Too many times we were left with empty plates and empty glasses (with only the water jug as our friend!!). The wine flight was nothing special I'm afraid. Also when wines and dishes came, there was no real love or passion for what was being presented (we can read a menu but sometimes that little 'extra' detail/ explanation makes for a more special experience). It just felt like the heart had gone out of this restaurant which does appear to go against the grain of other reviewers but this is how we felt and I wonder if others will feel the same? We noticed that there were now an increased number of tables so I wonder if this is the reason that there is ONLY a tasting menu on offer and lots of people/ tables are served at the same time - is it easier for chef (rather than the Customer?). I'm afraid unless this set up changes, as much as the food is delicious, we will not be returning.
20/02/2017: We had been looking forward to going to the Checkers for sometime and the visit did not disappoint. The menu was just beautiful so many lovely tastes with loads of fresh homemade bread. Service was relaxed and friendly- thank you.If you are considering going... you must, despite the high price it is definitely worth it!

Creme Pen Cei

New Quay, Ceredigion, <20£
01/02/2017: It's our tradition, every time we come to New Quay we have to get an ice cream and watch the dolphins on their pier. There are so many flavours you can't even pick! There is one with honeycomb in which is so delicious! The views of New Quay are perfect to look at whilst eating some yummy ice cream!
20/10/2016: This was, flat out, the best ice cream I've ever had in my life. Do not ask question, do not think about your diet, do not ask if you've had enough - go in there, try something new and simply experience ice cream at its best.

Agnelli's espresso bar and deli

Aberystwyth Canol/Central, Ceredigion
25/02/2017: After a busy couple of hours shopping in Aber, arrived at Agnelli's reaĺly looking forward to food & drink....2.30pm we thought was a safe time to avoid the lunchtime rush. Wrong, still v busy, however with 2 in-laws & 2 small kids in tow, we didnt expect to be completely ignored for 30 minutes (Hi,we're really busy at mo, we'll get to you as soon as we can - would have worked a treat)! After 20mins wait a couple came in for coffee & were acknowledged & served straightaway, this didnt help our frame of mind!!!! Another 10mins later we were served, no apologises whatsoever for our wait!Fair play - coffee best of the week, brushetta superb, olive & bread dip ok, tiramisu outstanding! Owner & 2 staff more than friendly by the time we left, sadly didnt quite make up for such a poor start!
21/02/2017: Visited with family during a rainy day in Aber.Great simple Italian food served by friendly staff.Would recommend to anyone looking for authentic food served by a real Italian family. Coffee was also fan.

The Old Barn Tea Room

Talybont-on-Usk, Powys
13/02/2017: After a day of hiking in the surrounding we stumbled across this lovely Tea Room just in time for a much needed hot chocolate. The friendly staff, and lovely owner, allowed us to use their landline to call for out lift home (as our phone signal was nonexistent) and even stayed open so we didn't have to wait in the cold! A hidden gem in the Welsh countryside - I strongly recommend a detour to The Old Barn Tea Room for anyone traveling in the area!
11/02/2017: Used to frequent the tea rooms often solely for the much talked about scones, but have not been for a couple of years. Not quite sure what has happened?!?It was a miserable cold day but I was looking forward to a warm welcome from Julie (I think) and a nice warm cuppa. Took a seat and waited patiently for the waitress/cook/service lady who was smoking outside. Unfortunately, the lady seemed to forget basic hygiene and failed to wash her hands-yuck, but if that wasn't bad enough she came to take our order smelling of a stale ashtray . I wasn't completely comfortable with eating at this point after what I'd witnessed but really wanted the scones. I wish I hadn't bothered, they were dry, lacking any flavour, and very hard. When I complained I was given a filthy look off the woman with a sour face and made to feel like I WAS THE ONE OUT OF ORDER!!!! Decided to just leave it there and pay up and leave it as it wasn't really worth the hassle but I left wondering what has happened since my last visit for it to change so drastically. If I do decide to go again I'm hoping for a significant improvement in hygiene and customer service and hope this was a one off.

Fantastic food, friendly service and nothing was too much trouble. Everyone commented that it was the best they had ever had, from the American pancakes to the Welsh rarebit and everything in between. Thanks and look forward to going again at Easter.
22/02/2017: stopped for tea and scones several times and even breakfast. Delightful staff, great tea selections and fresh baked goods ... perfect after day hikes on the canal path or just to duck out of a chill rain to warm up

The Castle Inn

Llangors, Powys
19/02/2017: After a walk around Llangorse Lake, we stopped at the Castle Inn for dinner. The food was excellent and the service was brilliant (and quick despite it being really busy). The pub itself is very clean and has a really nice atmosphere.Being visitors to the area, we weren't sure how to get back to our car with it being dark by the time we left so the lovely gentleman behind the bar took us outside the pub and directed us back - thank you!Would highly recommend this place if you're in the area.
10/02/2017: Nice place to drink with friendly company from the locals! The barman Mike is a lovely fella and looks after all his customers very well! I had Sunday lunch up there and it was beautifully served and full of flavour! Definitely will be visiting back

Medina

Aberystwyth Canol/Central, Ceredigion, 20-30£
19/02/2017: We were visiting with my son and his girlfriend and asked them to book somewhere. What an excellent choice it was. The menu in the restaurant part is Greek/ Turkish/Moroccan style food with wonderful fresh salads and dips and mezze as well as a full menu of main oven or grill cooked foods. We all had lovely meals and the quality of the wine was good. Everything tasted so fresh and zingy, it was a real treat. We had a great two course meal with drinks before eating and wine with the meal and coffees to finish, all for an average of £27 per head. Great value for the quality. Medina also seems to have a more 'cafe' style part a time the back of the building where salads etc are served at a counter. There is also a food shop and book shop incorporated into the whole place. The tag line for the place is 'eat, drink, shop' It certainly provides all of this.
19/02/2017: Beautiful food in a calm healthy location what more can I say. Nothing was too much for the staff diolch

22/02/2017: 2nd visit in 6 months and alway try to eat here when in town. Had a lovely meal with a group of friends for my husbands birthday. Just remember its byob and cash payment.
21/02/2017: What a joy of a restaurant!! Seemingly owned by just one very lovely guy who was working hard to cook all of the specialities on the menu, this was a real treat of a romantic meal. My boyfriend and I both had delicious tagines, and then enjoyed some divine baklava to follow. This wasn't what I expected, but so much better! Please do come here for a dinner to enjoy

Gwesty Cymru

Aberystwyth Canol/Central, Ceredigion
22/02/2017: We ate at a Michelin stared restaurant in London recently and this week in the restaurant at Gwesty Cymry on Saturday the difference was negligible as far as the food went. The scollops were delicious in fact the whole meal was lovely. Well done to the chef and to the friendly staff.
20/02/2017: This restaurant is located in the guest house of the same name, right along the seafront. Although the view from in front of the guesthouse is superb, the restaurant itself is half-basement and there is not a view. However there is a terrace in front for sipping pre-dinner drinks in nice weather. The restaurant is warm and very cozy. Our server, Nerys, was very efficient and very friendly, as was the rest of the staff. I would describe the cuisine as “modern” Welsh. All meals are freshly prepared on site. In addition to the regular menu there are daily specials. We had the mint glazed welsh lamb rump and the grilled Hyrddyn Mullet, both of which were delicious. The dessert menu changes frequently with crème brulee, tortes, and crumbles and, of course, a selection of Welsh cheeses. A nice wine-by-the-glass list included a very nice Chilean Merlot and Hidden River Shiraz from South Africa. Also available is a nice list of Scotch Whiskys and Wales own Penderyn Whisky. A great dining experience and if I didn’t live 5000 plus miles away I would be back often.

The Hungry Trout

New Quay, Ceredigion
24/02/2017: My husband and I ate here in Feb. We had the fillet steak which was a little overcooked but still very nice. Nice atmosphere good choice which includes a reasonably priced 2 or 3 course menu. Would recommend it for a treat
22/02/2017: We visited here to get out of the wind and the rain on a blustery day. There was a warm welcome and the service was excellent. My husband chose the bay crab carbonara and I had the mussels and chips. Both meals were delicious - very tasty and beautifully presented. The atmosphere was relaxed and unhurried and we were ready to go back out into the stormy weather for a bracing walk.
