Angels With Bagpipes in Edinburgh, City of

A true gem in Edinburgh on the Royal Mile! Best meal we've had since last week in Paris at George V in the Four Seasons. Oysters and haggis bon bons starters with a little Tattingers were wonderful! Best Caesar salad WITH anchovies we've had in years. Had the sea trout, mussels and fennel entree which was truly superb, paired with a nice French Viognier. Wonderful friendly service staff too. Reservations are essential as the restaurant is small. 12.5% service charge as more UK restaurants are doing, but totally worth it. 5 Star experience for us!

Small plates of delicious unique food. Great service. Clean and lovely atmosphere.

Very very nice tiny place. Strangely located in Edinburgh most touristic area, one would not expect to find such high quality restaurant. Recommended for foodies. Little twist for the chef, as I love thin medium grained couscous, the aubergine dish would be heavenly if pearly couscous was replaced by the standard sized grain 😉 The taste of this dish is marvelous, the texture less satisfying for me. Another one for the chef, have you ever tried a steak tartare au couteau? Even better than grounded 😉 Don't get me wrong, yours was lovely and creamy.

Fine dining in a casual setting. Food is excellent and easy to share. Portions are not large and menu is not extensive but there is something for everyone. Decent wine list. Excellent service. The beet and kale salad was outstanding. Great location.

It’s important to make a dinner reservation. We saw several people turned away because the restaurant was full. The haggis balls and burrata were delicious.

Wine from Pegões (Setúbal) at 38 euros when they can have better wines from Douro or Alentejo. The food didn't have much flavor. Too expensive for the food served. The positive point is the decoration and the friendliness of the staff.

Si differenzia dai ristoranti di cucina locale per lo stile minimalista e la pulizia. L’accoglienza formale dimentica il folklore della città, la drink list sfogliata in attesa che sia pronto il tavolo pecca di varietà. Il menu comprende pochi piatti e i tempi di attesa si sentono, ma la sorpresa sta nella qualità. L’haggis, piatto tipico di frattaglie macinate, si frammenta in quattro polpette da immergere nella salsa al whisky: non solo gustoso ma molto digeribile. Il filetto di carne (cotto a piacere del cliente) ha un ottimo sapore e vale l’attesa. Prezzo finale di circa 70 euro a testa (senza eccedere con il vino). Magari non è il ristorante più caratteristico della città ma di certo lascia un buon ricordo.

Good cuisine in a tourist place is worth a lot. Excellent tartare.

Piège à touriste... Un steak tartare ridicule et pas fameux de la taille d'une pièce de 2€... Un coca de 20cl 8 chips en accompagnement le tout pour 20livres... Accueille franchement désagréable... En gros avec un happy méal y a plus à ma manger et c'est meilleur pour trois fois moins cher... Ce resto n'a rien de gastronomique ou de haut de gamme...

20cl Coke A beef tartare the size of an egg yolk with 8 chips for 20 pounds... Not pleasant staff. There's three times as much to eat in a 7-pound happy meal. It's expensive to eat.

. Unfortunately, a significant disadvantage is the lack of Wi-Fi for customers, despite it being available in the house. This can be frustrating for visitors who want to stay connected during their meal. Furthermore, the dishes offered are remarkably small in relation to the price charged. Although the quality may be good, the cost in relation to the quantity of food left something to be desired. Based on the overall experience, I would not recommend this restaurant due to the combination of lack of Wi-Fi for customers and offering small dishes at high prices.

C’était tellement bon que nous y sommes repartis le lendemain ! Super accueil, super service, très bons cocktails et des plats… au top! Leurs bonbons de haggies sont excellents tout comme leur crabe, leurs beignets de cod, leur truite et même leur salade César! Ils ont aussi du bon vin et oui! Nous avons adoré !

Just had a lovely collection of small plates for lunch, including oysters with hot haggis sauce (yum yum!). Fab cocktails and delicious wine by the glass or bottle. Right opposite the cathedral and if sun is shining (it was) a brilliant little suntrap.

The best restaurant I’ve been to during a recent trip to Edinburgh. We ordered 5 dishes to share between 2 and every dish was delicious. The portion size was quite generous so we didn’t have room left for dessert. Great service too.

Had a lovely evening there after my wife's graduation with our daughter and our parents ... but we were all served cold potato dishes with our mains! They knocked a bottle of wine of the bill. Very odd. Never been served cold totties afore.

My husband and I have been coming here everytime we have come to Edinburgh and especially for my husbands birthday. Sadly this year I came on my own on my husbands birthday as my husband had died in June due to cancer. The staff were amazing and helped make an emotional evening a little easier for me for which I cannot thank them enough. As usual the food was gorgeous, well cooked and presented. Booked again for next year and will be visiting again when I’m next in Edinburgh. Massive Thank you to everyone who works there

Small portions and no wi-fi, because I wanted to google and see what people were ordering, the waiter didn’t help. In the end I made a mistake with the dish and it wasn’t tasty

We booked this restaurant a while ago on recommendation. At the time the menu looked great - a modern take on Scottish food, which was just what we were looking for. Upon arriving at the restaurant we realised that the menu had been revised recently and was no longer as appealing. The main sticking points for us were lack of mains options and the fact that almost all of the dishes looked incredibly straightforward to prepare. The desserts looked thrown together and the cheesecake was specifically simple and disappointing. Comparing this to photos of the food we had previously seen on Google and reviews we felt a bit let down. Perhaps something happened to their long standing chef. The service was still good and the individual ingredients of the dishes good quality. I'm sure if a bit more skill and imagination was put in to the dishes it would be much improved. Be sure to read the menu properly before you go.

Siamo stati a cena in occasione del mio compleanno. Location voto 1 non per la posizione centralissima ma per lo squallore del locale, non curato, tovaglioli di carta, no tovaglie, posate poggiate sul tavolo, illuminazione inesistente, inoltre alcuni led malfunzionanti. Menu 1 pochissime pietanze porzioni minuscole se ne prendi 3 a testa ne mangi 1 Buona la qualità comunque. Carta dei vini no comment ma siamo in Scozia, comprensibile dei costi assurdi. In definitiva siamo usciti pagando 148€ e sono andato da un kebbabaro a mangiare un panino. Sconsigliato 100% credetemi sono affidabile.

Went midweek without evening reservation. Keen to go as had been recommended to us. Busy restaurant but they found us a table. Good prompt service and lovely food. Loved the haggis starter with dram of Jura. Also the salmon main course was good.

Food was tasty but as others have said, portions are on the small side. The biggest issue however, is the place is as big as my thumb and has no soft furnishings. On this occasion it was unbearably loud that I couldn't have a conversation with my wife without having to raise my voice. We ended up finishing our food, skipping dessert just to be finished and leave. We still had a bill north of £170, and spent less at Wedgwood and had a much better experience

I have never wanted to leave a restaurant as quick as I have tonight! Visiting Edinburgh and for our last night we decided to come to Angels with Bagpipes cause we were recommended to come here. Honestly would rather had got fish and chips. Firstly we were seated in front of the big balcony windows and was asked if we wanted water and we said yes. The waitress was taking a while I honestly thought she was getting it from the well outside. Then she came back to our table and took our order and again I asked for water and she completely forgot she didn't even remember asking us before. Food wise is ok. But the atmosphere in the sitting area at the back was horrible. Couldn't hear my husband talk and ruined our evening. There was a loud couple at the back table with a voices like a fog horns, and the room was incredibly warm. Once we finished our mains we just wanted to get out of there. If you want a romantic setting or somewhere to enjoy and have a conversation this isn't the place for you. Completely disappointing.

This restaurant is in the spectacular Royal Mile. The service was attentive enough. The food was good enough but 3 of the 6 mains on offer were beef (admittedly I maybe should have checked this before we went). Am I the only one who finds paying extra for vegetables strange and rather disingenuous? To summarise, it was perfectly pleasant. But I had expected to be more impressed at the prices.

Very reasonably priced restaurant on the Royal Mile with some of the loveliest , creamiest haggis I have tasted . Also, their whisky menu is reasonable prices with a reasonable choice of decent malts

The main course (venison) was nicely prepared and presented with a solid flavor profile. However, the portions were absurdly small for the price point. The side (broccoli) was very tasty but comprised mostly the stems with very little crowns - not great. Overall I was quite disappointed. I actually walked away hungry, which at that price point is inexcusable. Better food at a better value at many other venues. Cannot recommend.

The recipes were tasty and well presented. The main (venison and chicken) portions were absurdly small. The side (broccoli) was poorly prepared - mostly woody stalks. Walking away hungry at that price point is not too cool. Plenty of other choices for better food at a better value. Very disappointed.

I would 100% go here again & would highly recommend. The starters & mains were delicious. Felt alittle let down by the desert. It was a lovely relaxing atmosphere.

Food was great but we were sat alone downstairs whilst tables were free upstairs. Wine wasn’t as cold as it should have been either. A little disappointed saved only by the food.

Food was outstandingly flavoursome. Haggis starter was best we’ve ever tasted in a restaurant. Salmon main was very good indeed too. Good portion sizes too; we could not manage dessert! We were impressed with the wine recommendation and knowledge in general if our waitress.

Excellent restaurant which was very convenient to St Giles Area. We ate there two out of three nights we were in Edinburgh. The Fish was superb, as was the venison but the short rib less so. Highly recommended.

This was our second visit to Angels with Bagpipes having rated it one of the best we had been to previously. The food was still good and service was good until we received our bill from the bar staff member. There was a service charge of over £52 and they had not deducted the £50 voucher we had disclosed at the time of booking and again on the night. We asked for both to be deducted from the bill so we could choose our own gratuity. The lady was not happy and her tone and manner became rude when she brought the updated bill back. We still left a large gratuity which was not acknowledged and we were not spoken to when we left and found our own coats on the way out. Such a shame as this will stop us returning.

Loved the location, food, experience. Disappointing that the toilets feel very ‘back of house’ … the kitchen door should be kept closed as wash up areas never look the cleanest!! Our waitress was attentive and all the staff were pleasant. Will come back and will recommend to others

The ambiance is wonderful, and the design is simple yet stunning. Food presentation is simply engaging to the eye. Food is entirely simplistic but tasty, delicious, and delightful, with the flavour that we seek. We award five stars for this reason. The staff members are very friendly, pleasant and helpful.

Booked here for lunch, we arrived slightly early, this wasn't an issue and seated promptly. Restaurant is chic and not pretentious. The staff are passionate and helpful. The well priced lunch menu had something to suit all tastes, the food was delicious, and presented by a chef who cares, a great find in the old town area, 100% recommended!

I had the venison steak and pate mouse along with the sourdough and beet vinegar which was all amazing!

Wonderful meal on the outdoor patio during Fringe with view of street performers. Friendly, prompt service. Not rushed even though the restaurant was booked to capacity. The meal was fantastic from starter through dessert. Beautiful presentation, excellent flavors, generous servings, nice variety on the menu. Beet salad and chocolate torte were highlights.

While the food itself was delicious, the experience in the restaurant itself felt really rushed, with a feeling like the staff perhaps wanted us if the table as quickly as possible so that this could be used for potential walk-ins. We were served our entrees and mains in record time. When then asked if we would like dessert, we received a raised eyebrow when we indicated we would like to sit for a while and have a drink and let the 2 previous courses settle while deciding. Needless to say, we didn't end up staying for dessert. Such a shame as the food and venue itself was great, but we simply felt like we couldn't take the time to actually sit and enjoy it

Aanrader, waar je wel op tijd bij moet zijn want zit vaak vol. Erg goed eten, mooie wijnen, fijne whisky’s en prima bediening. Entourage ook aangenaam. Tikje prijzig, maar dat is heel Edinburgh en het kan veel gekker.

The food was very good with interesting choices. I appreciated that mocktails options were available upon request from the staff. However, there was no wifi which was apparently a reoccurring issue and the noise level was VERY loud. The chairs were so uncomfortable I skipped dessert. Overall, ok if I were with a party but would avoid as a solo diner.

The best restaurant I have eaten during my stay in Edinburgh. It was recommended to me by a local guide and I was not disappointed. At first it may look like nothing special just another restaurant that serves crowd pleaser on the Royal Mile. But you cannot be any further from the truth. The Chef creates magic on a plate. Full of flavours and textures. The BEST venison I have had in my life. Served with barley, celeriac pure, walnuts granola, pickled blackberry and jus. The first course Parsnip Soup with Nduja already put me in a very happy place to begin with. It was all I needed on a cold and windy day. A dish that will warm you up from within, that is full of flavours. The portions are just right. Worth spending maybe a bit more money and eat very well. I would definitely recommend visiting the restaurant to anyone who loves good food. I will be back and bring friends with me to spread the love.

The staff were all lovely, the food was exceptional quality, and being quite small the place was intimate and relaxing. If I were to have any comment it would be the beef rib could have been a little bigger. It was however one of the tastiest meals I’ve ever had. Thank you to the lovely staff 😊

We had a set Christmas menu. The venue is nice but I thought they could have made it more Christmassy. It was also cold and we had to ask that the heating was turned up. The food was average considering the price. Processco was served at room temperature which is a big no no for me! I would return if they up their game!

Food was very good, but the portions for the price was embarrassing, then to add a tip and says its optional in front of family is beyond believe. Won't be returning extortionately over priced

The staff were really helpful and friendly and the ambience was nice and relaxing. The food was tasty, however, the portion size was barely enough to feed a small child, considering the prices too. The desserts looked lovely, but after spending so much on a starter and a main, and receiving 2 tiny courses we had to give dessert a miss. Also not much option on the menu, and soft drinks not included on the menu anywhere at all so you are not able to see how much they are charging you per soft drink until you get the bill! Overall, quite disappointed ☹️

Have loved going to Angels with Bagpipes for several years now, and although it’s still good ish, it’s no longer great. Food quality and service is still very good. The downstairs restaurant is pretty non-descript and a bit underwhelming. Food portion size is less thank what I would expect for the price. It’s no longer value for money.
