Baltzersens Ltd in Harrogate

Came here for breakfast and lunch on our 3 day visit to Harrogate with our dog, Lola. Really friendly staff, great breakfast waffles and Scandinavian inspired lunch items. A little pricey but we really enjoyed what we had and the vibe of the cafe. Some helpful tips to enjoy our time in Harrogate which was really appreciated.

Dropped on this cafe. cake shop this morning around 10.30am and as we entered we were informed that they were operating a reduced menu , due to staff shortage.......not a worry on this score, as the four individual meals that we received were just short of brilliant .. Well presented and very tasty . The four of us were well impressed and we are seasoned travellers..........as we were in the far part of the cafe , it wasn't until we came to pay the bill that we noticed that the cafe was packed, and we know why.... Lovely cakes and pies were also displayed and no doubt were just as delicious ...... Well worth at least at a try but we will be back .....

A more unique offering in the town and a great option for brunch. The interior dining area is spacious but fills up fast, so expect to have to wait at busy times. The service from the staff is welcoming and friendly with everyone being attentive and fast. The menu has a good range and a mix of familiar dishes as well as some more traditional Scandinavian items. Portion sizes are large and with the quality of the food represent good value. The fresh pastries are equally as large and tasty, so whether you’re wanting a full meal or a lighter breakfast you won’t be disappointed. Overall it’s a great place and for something a little different I’ll certainly be returning.

Brilliant breakfast......we dropped in on a very wet morning and we're delighted. Very friendly staff and unusual menus, good coffee and the mushroom and spinach pyttipano was awesome.....

£3.40 for a small cup of barely hot cappuccino, what a rip off!I wanted to eat but there was a problem in the kitchen ,no ones fault but I could not believe the prices charged here!Lots of competition in the area so won't be back

Went here for brunch. Very busy little cafe. Good Skandi based menu. Very unusual but very nice. Had a kind of rosti with sausage, beetroot and eggs. Very nice too. Lots of baked goods and skir on offer.

A change to the usual "chain" restaurants and it was a good choice - lunch was good and the fresh fruit juices were excellent - staff friendly and service prompt

Really excellent food which is a bit different from the run of the mill paninis, sandwiches etc. All food very well cooked and presented and really delicious. Good service from staff.

First visit last weekend and whilst fairly enjoyable the prices do not reflect the food or premises. Quite cramped in and extremely noisy almost £20 for a couple of drinks and cakes was too steep. Staff not overly friendly but efficient.

As we walked from our hotel to Baltzersens, we went past many of Harrogate’s cafes, of which most were packed. It came as a little bit of a surprise that this establishment was far from full, and if anything a slight worry. We had nothing to worry about. What a fantastic place this is; the service and surroundings were excellent, whilst the food was immaculate. We went for breakfast, and had the classic porridge, sausage brunch bun and shared a cruffin. Everything we ate was outstanding, and we left with some pastries which were also fantastic. We’d visited Betty’s the day prior, and meaning no hate on their famous tea room, but it’s Baltzersens we’ll be rushing back to next time. A must visit.

Amazing place. Friendly staff. Cool vibe. Delicious coffee. The breakfast rarebit was the best !!! Almond croissants like I’ve never tasted before. Such a choice. Can’t wait to go back. Don’t miss it.

On a day trip to Harrogate and dropped in here for lunch. The staff were very helpful [including calmly letting us sort out our grandaughter having a small strop about what to order]. The food was very good and it is great to see something different on a high street. I had the Pyttipanne with sausage as a main course [a sort of potato and vegetable hash with a fried egg on top] and a Sultanboller as a pud [a sort of toasted teacake] and can highly recommend both. The coffees were also very good.

I used to visit a lot back in 2017 I remember this being a cosy Scandinavian haven. It’s now a scruffy, slightly dirty bare room with a few half dead plants. There is nothing appealing about it whatsoever. The customer service was poor and we kept getting forgotten about and then watched our food be put on someone else’s table. Not ideal to have strangers leaning over the meal you’re about to eat with no mask on!!!The food is lovely but, the venue is so off putting now and it’s such a shame. With winter fast approaching we want the cosy haven back, not the forgotten about dirty room. Sorry but, with other great eats close by you guys need to step it up!!

Joined a queue outside the cafe where the sign said “wait to be seated inside the cafe” and where there was a barrier stopping people from just walking in. After 15mins waiting, other potential customers leaving and 3 different staff members walking past us not even acknowledging us, I asked the gentleman in front of me if they had told him there would be a wait, to which he replied they hadn’t spoke to him at all.So I asked the next staff member who came out how long the wait would be, i might as well have been speaking Chinese as she spoke to me like an idiot, saying “there is no wait, you can just walk in”.In these times where people are rightly more cautious and observing rules that you have written in your window, you have staff members who are happy with just letting people wait outside in the cold, not knowing if what they are doing is right. I won’t bother trying again, not with the bad attitude and lack of consideration that the staff have and I’m sure we won’t be the only ones!

Visited this Scandinavian cafe in Harrogate's centre for breakfast. The guy who owns it apparently was inspired by his Norwegian grandmother and growing up with Scandinavian food to start this place - and a great job he has done.It doesn't look like much from the outside but inside there is bright Scandi decor, which is thoroughly hyggelig. The menu offers waffles, sandwiches, porridge, cinnamon buns and more.We had the pyttipanne - a Swedish potato & beetroot hash with fried egg, a sultanaboller (a delicious cinnamon-rich tea cake) and a Spandauer danish pastry.Vegetarian & vegans do well here, and milk alternatives are available.Only downside was an unwelcoming & unfriendly waitress. However, the guys serving were all friendly, which is why I didn't subtract a star. Dogs and children welcome.

Mild tasting coffee without bitterness and folk who know how to make a flat white! (My only gripe may be that the coffee is a bit too small). The pastries are very tasty and styled from Scandinavia, priced slightly above average but worth it.

Stopped here for lunch. Lucky to get a table as due to Covid they've not got many. I had the open meatball sandwich and at nearly £10 was underwhelmed when it arrived. Having said that it was lovely and filling. So would recommend it. My Wife had the mushroom pate and again very tasty but not what she expected. There teas were very tasty. We popped in for an early breakfast in Harrogate and were pleasantly surprised. The coffee was delicious, my smoked salmon and poached egg was so flavoursome and my partners porridge hit the spot. An excellent start to the day and one we would highly recommend to anyone!

We visited for waffles in the morning. The waffles were wonderful and the choice of toppings were great. The menus were exhaustive and it was difficult to choose one thing. We did have an issue with drinks as the one I ordered they didn’t have and then the next one they didn’t have. They did rectify this by making my drink complimentary.

The gluten free waffles were amazing, so amazing we went back the next day for more! Great little cafe, service was great, would return when next in the area.

I have been the Balterzens a few times, and I have recommended it to a few people. The food is delicious, and it's clear they spend a lot of time preparing it - my only gripe is that the portions are small and prices are high, I've always left still hungry.The staff are friendly and attentive, and it's a bonus that it's dog friendly.

I understand that it’s a new world at the moment and we are still all adjusting but yesterday we visited Baltzersens at 2.30pm so past the lunchtime rush. We had to wait 15 mins for someone to clear some tables now given that there is a lot less tables than before, that was a long time to clean tables that people had already left! We then were shown to our table and were told we couldn’t order at the till but to wait which we did, we watched staff members chatting, moving dirty cups from the front to the kitchen and clean ones back, watched other tables being cleared despite no people waiting to sit at those. We asked a young lady if we could order and she said she would be right back to take our order. Another 15 mins later we gave up when we were ignored again and a table with two young ladies had their order taken who had just arrived! So we just got up and walked out having waited over 30 mins, to which we were told by the staff member at the front, thank you for coming hope you enjoyed your visit!!!! Maybe there needs to be some management on the shop floor ensuring no customer was forgotten as the young staff members on the floor didn’t seem to have a clue what to do!

This was the first place we went to on our first ever visit to Harrogate- and it set the tone for a wonderful trip.We tried all sorts of authentic and delicious Scandinavian things. The standout for me was the traditional waffle with gjetost. Definitely it will remain with me for a long time as a very strong and amazing food memory. If you haven't tried gjetost (a sort of caramel-tasting cheese) before it is really worth seeking out. I first heard of it from Roald Dahl in one of his books and once I managed to find it in Selfridges on Oxford street. Here, on the waffle and with some salted caramel on the side, it was just amazing.I also had a nice chat with the friendly owner, there is a lovely story behind the place. If you are in Harrogate you have to go and check it out.

We popped in for a coffee and cake on Saturday afternoon, atmosphere was lovely and staff very friendly. Coffee great, ginger beer great and cakes were delicious too.I'd wish we had been in Harrogate longer so we could have enjoyed some of the savoury foods off the menu - as the menu had my mouth watering. You must visit this place if you are passing through Harrogate.This cafe is a breath of fresh air completely different to anything else on the high street. Whenever I am passing through I make sure I make time to pick to enjoy a pytippanne. I was served by Zander and his two female colleagues were all super helpful. They even let me borrow a phone charger.

Fabulous range of delicious teas and coffees delivered swiftly to ones table. The cakes and waffles are home made and simply great. The only down side is the popularity of the place by school children in the afternoon.

I was very wary about eating here after reading some of the more recent reviews, and I walked past it several times before taking the plunge. It's different to anywhere else I've seen on my travels, so I had to try it.Unlike other reviewers, I had no issues at all with the staff, they were attentive, cheerful and efficient.The food was good too, the menu has some really different items on it, and the Vaffel Polse I had was really nice. I'm not often defeated by food, but the waffle was WAY too big for me, and I had to leave some of it. The accompanying pickled veg/salad was beautiful, I could have eaten that all day.I treated myself to a mint hot chocolate, and didn't know whether to have the large one or the standard one. Being greedy, I went for the large one, and I'm very glad I did, for two reasons. Firstly, it was absolutely delicious.But secondly, I wouldn't really consider it to be "large," it seemed to be in a fairly standard size cup to me.The most alarming thing about the hot chocolate was the price - £4.20 was extortionate, no matter how nice it was.The food was £10.95, which I was borderline OK with, considering the portion size, the quality and the novelty factor.In summary, I didn't find it as bad as many recent reviewers, but it's a bit on the pricey side . If you want to have something different, it's worth paying for, but maybe just the once.

There are two cafe's next to each other which I didn't realise when visiting. They are joined at the back via a kitchen, but have two different entrances. As it was very wet, and we were looking for this dog friendly cafe on recommendation, we dashed into the first one. There were two young members of staff and the girl ignored customers where possible whilst flicking water at the boy and generally flirting. They spent a lot of time looking at screens together and giggling, but they didn't even know what the only soup of the day was when asked. Surely a basic in a small cafe. When they found out from the chef, they didn't really know what was in it, he thought it was sweet potato and miso. I know people who are unable to tolerate - for example - chilli so the fact that he didn't really know what was in the soup was unhelpful. I like miso, and sweet potato, so I chose it but couldn't really grasp why miso would be in a Scandinavian soup, if he was actually saying miso but to be honest but he seemed unsure of pronunciation let alone origin. I just plumped for it as I was wet and cold and very hungry and we'd been sat for some time. It came and was very nice, but then I don't have food intolerance. The beer was extremely expensive, I think £4.50ish for a small can. Not acceptable when I could get 4 large cans for the same price in a supermarket. I know there has to be a markup for profit but this is ridiculous. The toilet door didn't lock properly, the staff were not interested in the job or us, and at one point both members of staff walked out of the front door - leaving the place unattended - to deliver one small plate to (what what we later found out was) next door. This was actually our chance to leave without paying but that's not our style. The girl apparently had to follow him and giggle and touch him and hold the doors, because he wasn't able (whatever) to carry a single dish, next door, alone. When we left it was still pouring it down and we then discovered the same named cafe next door. We went in there for interest, and desert and wow, what a difference. Lively, friendly staff, so much more mature (in attitude rather than age) than the 2 next door (actually, why would you leave these two alone, seriously, they need supervision and guidance for them to learn the job) and actual interaction with them. I don't write reviews often, I don't like to criticise young people (as a 6th form teacher) but in this case, having researched and found this place as a stopoff for our day trip, I feel I have to give you feedback. The young staff need guidance. Give them it. And praise to the staff next door who were brilliant.

The staff were more interested in each other than customers. No greeting whatsoever on crossing the threshold!The young lady just plonked our order down without even a smile and didn’t ask if there was anything else we would like.

Treated teens to waffles and hot choc, hubby to flat white and a bun!! Bill over £30. Food utterly delicious and coffee most tasty but bill a bit of a shock. A place I consider for a real special occasion because of the resultant drain on my wallet. It is delightful food, super choice and the cakes are utterly lush. Worth a visit just for the cakes.
