Gwaelod y Garth Inn in Cardiff

Yesterday we went to The Gwaelod as a family of four for Fish and Chips. This doesn’t sound very remarkable but for our family it is. Myself and my son are NCGI (gluten intolerant) and for us to be able to have home cooked fish and chips it is wonderful as there are not many places that serve both battered cod and chips that are free from gluten. The homemade batter is superb too. The regular cod and chips has two pieces of fish and also this pub will supply just one piece for have the price. Yesterday I had a smaller fish and chips and was so full afterwards. The tiny peas that are served are special, so sweet and plentiful too. I’m not a drinker but the beer is very good (so my husband says😂😂😂) and yesterday there was a gluten free beer on tap too. They try very hard to have gf beer and it’s always available in cans if not on pump. Oh and the homemade desserts are just amazing. There are always two that are gf as well as ice cream. A wonderful pub with the best staff.

The Gwaelod y Garth is a real hidden gem of a location for a short stay. Tucked in at the back of the pub, there are three perfectly cosy rooms, all with comfy beds, hot showers, tea/coffee making, fridge, iron/ironing board, hairdryer etc. Being three adults, we occupied all three rooms so, once inside the front door we had the whole space to ourselves …….almost Airbnb style. Breakfast was taken in the pub and was excellent, with fresh fruits, cereals and yoghurts to start followed by choices of cooked breakfasts and toast, all of which was beautifully presented, with the use of some local produce. I was told that the Sunday roasts have a great local reputation but we were not able to sample it (well, not this time round!!). The staff were all really friendly and helpful and Maggie and Rob were both a delight to chat to on our last day. We would be more than delighted to use this lovely location again when next in Cardiff and would recommend it to others. Two minor points: It would be helpful to have a little shelving in the bathroom for washing bag/shampoo etc. Outside, due to the narrow section of road and the popularity of this lovely pub you might find parking nearby in the evening a bit of a challenge. Luckily, we did find parking in the car park each evening during our stay.

Joke. £4 lime soda water. Refused to pay abd had a load of abuse Not just from bar man but also the landlord. This drink is about 60p in most other pubs

Great food in a old and authentic pub . Early evening you get the locals visiting giving it a friendly atmosphere. . Not many pubs like this wonderful place . Great food, and real ales in a lovely clean friendly environment.

Came here for my mums 70th birthday , we have been before as a family so wanted it to be here for a special occasion . The pub is friendly ,warm and feels like a very homely ,special place to be, the food was amazing as always. Also love the specials board as my fiance always likes something a lil different from there ,the black pudding starter and the crab and prawn was very good ..the mains delicious and they cut some of my mums birthday cake. The staff are friendly and always polite and helpful each time I've been..would highly recommend a visit if you've never been. Thanks once again.

Great find 10 minutes out of Cardiff city centre so perfect when visiting our daughter at university. The service was really good and the staff all excellently trained. It was a pleasure to come to this restaurant which was busy and friendly. The food was extremely good as well

If what you’re looking for is an authentic Welsh experience, this is it! We stayed here for several days and fell head over heels in love with Wales and the Gwaelod y Garth Inn! The rooms are incredibly comfortable and clean, the breakfast and dinner in their restaurant was exceptional, and the staff go out of their way to make your experience suited to your individual needs and wants. We were treated like family and made memories to last a lifetime! We will be back!

What is all the fuss and five star reviews about? Very ordinary food at extortionate prices! A dark and dingy setting too! A pretentious owner and Staff that have high opinions of themselves and appear to be legends in their own minds! Don't be fooled by the 5 star reviews!

We are regular visitors to the Gwaelod but I felt that after our exceptional Sunday lunch yesterday I had to write a review. Even though the pub and restaurant was full because it was the last Sunday before Christmas the food was first class. The roast potatoes are something else. Myself and my son are gluten intolerant and the staff always cater for us with gf gravy. At other times they have home made gf chips too. I had pork and two of my family had beef and one had ‘ I want it all’ which includes all the meats. The portions are big and the vegetables are plentiful, fresh and quality. Most of the desserts are home made and yummy However the cherry and white chocolate roulade was incredible . I couldn’t stop eating it. Thank you Rob and Sam and all the wonderful staff. Superb Christmas dinner with a selection of starters, mains and desserts, crackers to pull on the tables, blazing fires, lovely atmosphere and a well stocked bar. Friendly and attentive staff.

A gem of a hotel. Rooms clean and well maintained - 2 are up stairs which might be an issue if you have mobility issues. Nice touch was fresh milk in the fridge for tea and coffee. But what makes it is the pub/ restaurant. The pub is an ideal local - great atmosphere, friendly staff and good range of beer. Food was also excellent, including the breakfast in the morning. What a lovely place this is, an absolute gem of a place with extremely lovely staff, can’t do enough for you either, food in this place is outstanding I had the Steak & Mushroom pie I was not disappointed at all, it’s such a nice place I’ve decided I will be stopping there again this week.

Lovely place , staff were so helpful. I can't remember the lady's name but she understood exactly what we needed. She arranged a reserved parking spot right outside our room. We didn't book in for dinner as was arriving late but had time to go down to the pub for a local cider which is definitely one of the best I've had ! And we enjoyed a game of pool. Our room was spotless, comfortable huge bed, fluffy towels, cold water and milk in quaint bottles in the fridge. Lovely clean bathroom and nice hot shower. Breakfast was amazing, eggs,bacon, sausage,toast, beans, fresh berries, yogurt......so much choice. Wonderful staff

Returning to live in this beautiful village after 20yrs away we couldn’t wait to get back to the local pub and WOW what a shock we had. From the local down the road to this beautiful country village pub and award winning restaurant with the nicest staff you could possibly meet. We have now become weekly eaters and drinkers as it’s a menu that is so hard to resist and changes regularly. The effort that Rob & Sam put into this place is just incredible, always looking for the next new idea. Sausage n Cider festival next, can’t wait for that. Always a smile from Sophie and every staff member who clearly enjoy working here. We feel very fortunate to be part of this wonderful village with this beautiful pub/restaurant being the heart of it all.

Stayed at the inn for 2 nights - simple but comfortable rooms, very quiet and a great breakfast. A bit far out if you plan on visiting Cardiff but that's how you get silence... Staff does everything they can to make you comfortable. Special thanks to Maggie, Monika and the French gentleman from South of France - would return if in the area again.

Well, what a fabulous pub/restaurant. Very, very friendly and welcoming staff. Family get-together of 5 on a Friday evening. We sat in the beer garden to start with, enjoying watching the world go by and then moved to the lovely restaurant upstairs at the time of our restaurant booking. Food was amazing, menu interesting and varied, managers and all staff very attentive and service was prompt. Excellent choice of 0% beers too, always a plus. Gwaelod y Garth Inn was recommended to us and so glad we took them up on their recommendation. One family member has recently moved close by and can see us regularly returning in the future. A hidden gem, I would say.
