Hops and Cheese in Hartlepool

Went to their comedy night and really enjoyed it. Their choice of drinks on tap is different from most but very nice.

Great place to visit. Home for the weekend with friends, who I knew loved their ale. Thought there's only one place to take you. So we were there Friday night and Saturday lunchtime. Cheese was delicious, pies immense, ales superb. Stands out from all other pubs and if you haven't already then give it a go.

Good beer selection and really happy friendly atmosphere. I'm not a massive fan of the layout if I'm honest, I think it lacks character, but I can forgive that when they have great beers on tap and chatty locals. Definitely recommend a visit if you like beer (and cheese I suppose, but I hate cheese). Having been a regular frequenter of this establishment over the past year and I have to say I love it. Its the best pub in Hartlepool for my money. Awesome beers, I have even been tempted to try some cheese (which was previously unheard of) and to be fair the layout works a treat as the venue had lots of different events in each month. Get yourself in and support Darrel and Hops and Cheese, it a fabulous local institution.

Such a lovely little place, had a charcuterie plate which was delicious! Some fantastic veers and even had a non-alcoholic gin.

Lovely evening. The owner is very knowledgeable on cheese and drinks and recommended some really nice ones to try.

Great Craft beer place! Owner very friendly and knowledgeable. Always a good beer that I like. Just wish people would use more so it would be busier. Always worry for these great small businesses for longevity

A real bonus to the hospitality trade in Hartlepool. A wonderful selection of drinks and food on offer from a wonderful welcoming well informed staff .Excellent for a drink and food pre or post match .

First off, I came here on the last day of the Tall Ships festival which is a Sunday so I was really annoyed that the full food menu was not available. I understand that my annoyance was NOT the fault of the bar but because I was 'hangry' and when the words "I'm sorry but we only have steak pie and cheese left" I cheered up immensely! A nice pie, great cheese, and a picked egg really made my day and was honestly the best food i have had since i arrived 5 days ago! A cider that was very good... but also good enough for me to know that a second would have jeopardised my train home! It also may seem a small thing, but a pub that leaves toiletries etc available for customers is a rarity and should be applauded. Lots of bar games available amd comfortable seats. By far my favourite place for a long while... and I have been around a bar or 2! Great work folks!

Visited here for a music night. Quite pleasant, missed a whole set, should have arrived earlier. Loved the Sam Smith's Cherry Beer.

1st time visit, very friendly staff, delicious cheese board and antipasti, range of IPA and wonderful locally sourced produce such as chutneys, savoury jams, and crackers etc...

This was our first visit and it was lovely. A small place but comfortable surroundings. The cheese and meat platter included cheese that we wouldn't normally buy and was great. Nice choice of beers. We will be back.

Nothing wrong with this venue and a reasonable option to get some real ale in an area where many pubs have given up on it. More like a three and a half but I can’t score that with the system used.

Popped in for a post match drink while waiting for a train. Lovely staff, very relaxed atmosphere. The food looked good but we didn't have time… next time…

We often visit here if we are out and about. Very rustic and homely, the range of drinks is getting better all the time. Staff are friendly and the owners are very knowledgeable about the drinks they sell, will return in the future.

Back after up to 2 years. Absolutely delicious food. Had a cheese, meat and crackers board, tasty toast and a black pudding scotch egg. As always, a good selection of beers and a good selection of soft drinks too. Well done to the excellent owners.

An utterly gorgeous little place. If you're looking for a "pub" you should probably go elsewhere but if you're out with friends and fancy a great cheeseboard or a selection of interesting and tasty beers/wines/spirits, this is the place for you. A hidden gem in the heart of Hartlepool with fantastic staff and a really chilled out feel. It's a little dark inside but that only adds to the atmosphere. The cheese grater light shades tell you everything you need to know about this place. Not for solo visitors per ce but if you're looking for somewhere to take your partner/friends, this is your place.

Craft beer, wine and cider. Not drinking no problem as they serve coffee and none achohol beverages. Gorgeous cheese plater. Would recommend and I will definitely be booking again.

Very friendly staff, great selection of draft and bottled/canned beer. Some good whiskeys but not tried the wine or gin selection. Cheeseboards are awesome, much better quality than you get at gasto places in larges cities. Generally has a selection of scotch eggs in various flavours of local pies. Great place to spend an afternoon or evening.

A great place to visit! Their beers are delicious as is their selection of food. The quiz nights are challenging and definitely worth giving a shot as well. Staff are friendly and knowledgeable. 5/5 will always recommend!

Absolute gem of a place this. Love the real ale as they get in always mining it up, cheese boards to eat in or take out always fresh and very lovely decor. Great for couples nights out to going out with friends.

If you love beer and cheese this is defiantly not to be missed. The scotch eggs are amazing and on this visit I made myself try something different for a change and was not disappointed, with a goats cheese, red pepper and onion panini, Delicious. Take out bag of scotch eggs and cheese still had to come away with me. Great beers on tap and they change trying different ones. They have quiz nights, gigs, jazz and even have delivery on weekends. Check them out, close to local train station, keep a look out for different events and opening times.

Is it a Deli or is it a bar? I went for the beer. 2 very good fresh pints later ordered a scotch egg. One of the best I have ever had. Go try the beer and the food you won't be disappointed.

A quaint and unusual place.. A great addition to the town a little off the beaten track offering occasional live music. Staff are friendly and welcoming, prices are reasonable.. Fairly small and can get very busy but well worth a visit.

The food boards are always fresh and tasty. Love the Pork pie's and different flavour Scotch eggs. The toasties are really tasty too. The team at Hops and Cheese do a very strong job of keeping a weekly fresh selection of Ale's going. Its like a mini beer fest every week! Some great local micro brews and National ones too. Heaven for a real ale drinker.

First visit here, had ploughmans platter but couldnt help myself when i noticed black pudding scotch egg had to have that aswell. Platter was nice but scotch egg best I have ever tasted. Hope to try the ales next visit and more scotch eggs

Brilliant little bar. Strange location for it as it's a cut above the other bars nearby. Real ales, cheese and tapas boards... The only bug bear is the opening times are all over the place and have been since its opened. I have been about 10 times and its closed 4 or 5 of those. Unless you follow their Facebook page religiously you never know whether it's going to be open or closed so I make a point of not going there exclusively in case its shut. If they could sort this out then it would be a 5 star all day long.

It's a warm and friendly place with pleasant staff with 'yummy' food, particularly if you like cheese. Would highly recommend either the 3 or 5 cheese board

This was my first visit to Hops and Cheese, very good selection of ales and wines, I also took the tapas selection and it was very nice, I will most certainly be back, maybe to play some of the many games and try a new beer or two

Really nice place with a better choice of drinks and food that you won't find anywhere else in town. Staff very friendly and helpful, ask them if you'd like things a bit different.

Just the right place for a tasty snack and drink

This is my third visit and it won't be my last. I love hand pull beers and there is a great selection, I had a taste of the Rhubarb Cider which was something special too. If you love Cheese like I do, you will not be disappointed and you cannot visit without trying the Scotch Eggs or taking one home with you. 58 Jazz Collective provided the music for the night. The whole place is amazing from decor to the lovely owners. Looking forward to our next visit.

Never seen a beer and cheese bar before. Loved it though, beer is great with a good selection. Really like how the bar is done out. Comfortable and laid back, nice friendly atmosphere . if I were a local this would be my bar of choice.

This is a great little place with limited menu revolving around simple food ( mainly cheese) that is delicious. A good choice of craft beers, cider and wine. Friendly and good service. Nice atmosphere- would definitely recommend .

Great place Wonderful cheese and scotch eggs

Met up with a couple of friends here on Friday night. I expected it to be full of pretensions hipster cliches but there was actually a lovely mix of people & ages. The place is tastefully done out and the Staff were welcoming and friendly. We spent the evening there enjoying the guitarist they had playing all the classics. The place could use a few air conditioners as the cheese has taken over but you get used to it after a while.... All in all a nice place. Will definitely go again. Refreshing change from th usual sports bars round every other corner.

This place is such a simple concept but real class. There is a great choice of Real Ale, Craft Beers & Wine at reasonable prices. The Cheeseboard & Charcuterie was excellent as was the Home Made Pork Pie! Will surely return on our next visit to Hartlepool!

One of our favourite places to be in Hartlepool. Lots of different cheese, wine and beers on offer and also some unusual foodstuff, with Hannah and Callum always on hand to advise what goes best with what and where it's come from. Lots of games to borrow so you can sit and while away the day or night in a lovely relaxed atmosphere. They also have singers, quiz nights and many more, which are always a great night too.

Visited with friends in November 2018. Had been recommended but really was just average. The older local pubs serve better quality beer even though there was more choice and wasn't too impressed with the interior and atmosphere. That said, would give it ago in the future, perhaps when they have an event on. Can't always go on first impressions

For months my wife and I had been talking of visiting this establishment and on Thursday after an evening at the cinema finally took the plunge. We shared a cheese platter which was delicious, probably the best we have ever eaten and we have travelled far and wide.The platter consisted of five different cheeses and a variety of crackers and bread accompanied by butter and chutney. Unaware of the size of the platter on ordering we added two scotch eggs which were also of the highest quality. Taking the owners advice I partook of a porter craft beer which was brewed locally and found this to be like nectar to a thirsty man, whilst my wife sampled the Shiraz wine which was Also very enjoyable. The menu is limited but perfectly adequate. We will be back here very soon.

Best beer in Hartlepool. Good selection of local and international craft beer and ales. The wines are great, the gins are great, and the selection of cheese is phenomenal. The toasties and cheese boards are to die for. Can't recommend the place enough.

We visited fairly recently... for hartlepool it's a good venue as craft ale is lagging in hartlepool. However it's looking promising with tooth n claw and donzoko on the raise. Firstly I explained it was my first time in to be met with a uninterested response from the staff. The concept of the beer and cheese wasnt explained? Perhaps I wanted a cheese to accompany my beer? Least give me a sales pitch. No recommendations on beer. A ok selection of taps and cans for take out. It was good too see donzoko on taps supporting the local guys love that. Not a great deal of crack from the staff. Customer service was on par with Yates. I would call back again as it's the only place in pools that got craft other than the supermarkets.. Staff need to wake up. Sell me some cheese!

Great little find. Usually a selection of craft beers and cider on offer, plus cheese boards or meat selection with some splendid pies and delicious scotch eggs. Plus, if you like to play board games or cards, plenty of opportunity. The atmosphere is very similar to a Tapas bar.

Wanted to visit for ages and were not disappointed. Whilst the place is small, its friendly but unusual with its different decor. Really good ideas tho. Liked the beer mats etc.
