John Macs in Down

We would visit Newcastle Regularly, but would usually go to Docs for food but as it was very busy yesterday we tried this chippy and sat by the water eating our food. Honestly was just amazing! We got 2 fish suppers and a tub of curry. You get 1 and half pieces of battered haddock and a brave few chips. Portion was super, and fish was cooked great. Couldn’t fault it. Staff very friendly, love the wee buzzer device they give you to keep you right and stop crowing up at the counter. Thought it was a fair price at £10.80 for each supper, I never mind paying when the quality is there! Can’t wait to come back again, just glad I don’t live there or I’d be as big as a house! But amazing for a treat by the sea. Thank you

I ordered small portion of curry chips....it was very small....The chips were disgusting....they were definitely not fresh cut chips more like Frozen ..and reheated.... absolutely horrible I definitely won't be buying any more...total waste of money ..went straight into the bin...

Had fish supper, wasn't great, re cooked chips very, very greasy .

Slightly disappointed with this one, ordered fish supper to have by the sea, was looking forward to the traditional seaside treat. The batter on the fish was thick and stodgy and chips were soggy and soaked in a very watered down vinegar. Only thing I can say is that the staff were very busy and may have overlooked cooking times and batter thickness. would definitely give this place another go at a less busy time of day.

Quite possibly the best fish & chips I've ever had. I wish I'd taken a photo, but once I started eating I wasn't stopping. The batter was paper thin and crispy, no white fluffy stodge, just crisp batter coating beautifully fried fish. Same for the chips too, clean, fresh and so very tasty. No kidding, John Mac's is a must stop shop if you're in Newcastle.

Brought my own fish in (a monstrously sized haddock) and they wouldn't cook it for me. You've disappointed me Mr Jonathan Mackrell and you will regret this.

Got takeaway here a few days ago. Cod supper and a portion of sausages . The food was very tasty and of good quality and quantity. My problem was with the sausages. A portion of sausages is 2 sausages, the same everywhere. Everywhere else I've been you either get about 10 chips or no chips with them, and this is usually reflected in the price. In John macs I got 2 chips! Yes 2 chips!. When I asked the girl she told me they were free. What an insult, her manner is not customer friendly. The portion was £2.30, a lot for 2 sausages oh and don't forget the 2 chips. My advice to John macs is either give more chips or don't give any at all. It really is an insult.

Nice girl took our order, expected more than 2 chips with a sausage..... Also the most ignorant 'woman' barked at me when I asked for salt and vinegar at the last minute, some lessons in customer service wouldn't go amiss.....

Omg I can't praise this place enough.Food was great,great portion of chips, staff really friendly loved the wee pager that let's you know your foods ready so you can stand and wait outside and not put yourself around people to much as covid is still out there.A++++ I will def be back

we went here for dinner today and generally the food was nice. initially the staff were friendly but when we opened our food there was a massive dead beetle about the size of a 1p coin fried onto one of my chips. i was obviously absolutely disgusted so took the chip back to show the staff and when i showed the girl she jumped back so she clearly immediately knew what it was without me saying anything but then she grabbed the chip off me and picked the bug off claiming it was potato skin. i don’t have a photo but i can assure you it definitely wasn’t. i had to leave uncompensated and without an apology. not happy with how the situation was handled at all, i wish they had taken responsibility and i would’ve definitely been happier.

A visit to Newcastle isn't complete without a visit to John Mac's to finish off the day. Beautiful fish supper, good sized portions and it somehow tastes even better when eating on the beach! Staff are efficient and helpful.

Collected my grandson from his wet weekend camping expedition and a sausage supper was just what the doctor ordered. Felt I had to join him with a fish supper 😉. Excellent decision- thanks a lot.

We always go to John Macs in Newcastle when staying up in our caravan, we so look forward to the most lovely chips,always beautiful food, we went Monday lunchtime what a disappointment, the chips were like a dark brown, loads of wee bits of chips with hard edges would have cut your mouth, not a decent chip the way it always is, my son wouldn't even eat his they were that hard, they went in the bin, battered sausage was lovely though,won't be in a hurry back pity because I always loved their chips.

We've been here plenty of times over the years, we go for the haddock but on this occasion, even though we ordered haddock it tasted like cod so we were disappointed.

I had read this was the place to go in Newcastle for fish and chips and it did not dissapoint! Prepare to go in hungry as the portions are incredibly generous. Tastiest cod I've had in so long and the chips were also amazing. Side of pepper sauce topped it all off, I'm still full and happy from it 2 weeks later!!

This place really is THE BEST fish & chip shop in Northern Ireland!! We happily drive 45mins to go to Newcastle just for their takeout fish & chips lol. Everything is freshly cooked to order, decent portions, quality food, and nice staff. Their menu board is extensive and there is no horrible after taste from overused cooking oil etc. We bring our visitors here to enjoy a takeaway fish supper on a bench on the promenade - and the compliments are always good!! We’re always trying other places, but nothing comes close to John Macs👍😋🥰

John Mac's is the best fish and chip shop. We always have a haddock fish supper absolutely delicious, every time. Generous portions, great value for money. Lovely friendly staff. Location is excellent for parking and 30 seconds walk from seafront. Lots of options for sitting eating Al fresco. Covid precautions are 100%, could not be better. Would like to thank them for doing all they could to stay open during lockdown.

Went on a cold rainy afternoon on a Tuesday. Staff were very lovely and attentive. Portions were huge and great quality cheap too.

I dont get to Newcastle as often as I would like but the beach at Murlough nature reserve is a beautiful place to walk the dogs. I'm not normally one for " the chippy " but after a walk on a beach a fish supper is hard to beat and John Macs is definitely the one I head for when I'm in town ;0)
