Kafeneon in Newcastle upon Tyne

I had the pork gyros and Greek orange cake. The best gyros I’ve ever had, very tasty and lovely chips too. The cake was beautiful too. Excellent restaurant and I will be back!

Excellent food and great service. We had the sharing platter and each dish was very good. Ferrero rocher cocktail is delicious. Great find. Will definitely return.

Visited today for first time with my daughter and what a lovely place.Had starter spanokopita light and tasty and pulled pork gyro for main with chips absolutely perfect pork so tender didn't even need a knife could not have asked for better daughter had hummus and tzatziki dips and she said she had not tasted better with chicken souvlaki for her mains Never been here before but really first rate from the minute you walk in and you are escorted to your seat the girls didn't hover as my daughter and I were too busy chatting to place our drink orders straight away but patiently came back when we asked them and the cocktails were full strength believe me....will definitely be back Thankyou everyone lovely meal

Went whilst visiting my daughter in Newcastle, the food was excellent and they went out of there way to squeeze us in on a Saturday night. Would definable go again and 100% recommend.

Had a lovely meal with friends visiting over from Greece. Best Greek restaurant outside of Greece and much better than many in Greece. Excellent food, wine, service. Staff very polite, make you feel comfortable and looked after. Can't praise the place more. Ευχαριστούμε Kafeneon !!!

Really Really disappointing experience..... so many things been wrong even in a lunchtime not a busy dinner service... would just say if you are looking for a place to eat greek food that one is NOT a place you are looking to visit. Anyway wishing them all the best definitely last visit ! First of all, your waiters are kids who don't know anything about your menu, I had to point the dishes as they can't even pronounce the name of what you are serving ! Next is when you ask what type of beers you serve they only know Mythos and that's all , let's go to the next part which is starters are extremely disappointing, dolmades from a tin, hard like a stone ! Let's go to the Hummus which has a taste of curry that is not used in Greece, or maybe the sour tzatziki ! The main course was served even before we finish our starters some guy just came iut of nowhere and serve everything on the table without even asking to leave that on the side , all the food was dry , pork , sausage, chicken .... no seasoning on anything, to top it off there were black bits on all the meets from the dirty grill ( pan ) and the sizzler chicken feta or whatever it was called was served with cold rice and tasteless, i could just taste the sour tomatoes.... well let's talk about the pan fried feta cheese into the starters which from one side was well cooked with golden crust and the other side when I turned it was spongy.... never been offered another drink always have to look around for a waiters and at the end nobody offered desert menu or asked do we like something sweet and most important nobody asked why all the dishes coming back full with food. On top of that, have to go upstairs and wait on the bar to pay the bill where 5-6 people are justing around laughing. At the same time the table next to us paid downstairs .... With my wife being Greek and I am Bulgarian we definitely know what greek food is. So much tastier than what you pretend to be !!! We were looking forward to visiting after reading the previous reviews so it was quite the disappointment. We are definitely NOT a " keyboard lunatic " and you should not assume or judge people so quickly because their opinion doesn't suit you. Again, Good Luck .

If you are a fan of Greek cuisine, you will not be disappointed by the Kafaneon restaurant. The cuisine is delicious and transports you to Greece. We find the typical flavors of the country. The dishes are extremely well prepared. It’s a real taste pleasure. I highly recommend!!

Visited as a family of 3 from Scotland. Amazing staff Amazing food! Only downfall was no kids meal. They did say they would make a smaller meal and charge less for a kids meal. But ended up just ordered meatballs starter and chips for child. A kids menu would be beneficial but understand if there isn’t much ask for a kids meal. Would defiantly recommend and return!

Amazing food and excellent value as always! We have visited quite a few times and have never been let down. We loved our starters and main courses today. The vegetable moussaka was delicious! I couldn't manage a dessert but decided to finish off with a banofee martini cocktail. It was lovely! I have to say that the staff who served us downstairs today were great. Very pleasant, helpful and efficient. It was a busy Saturday afternoon in Newcastle and I couldn't fault our experience today. We will be back.

Any fans of the chicken souvlaki should be aware they’ve changed from breast to thigh. Three of our table left hungry. Service was lovely but if you’re going down the ‘thigh is traditional’ route please tell those ordering that this is the case (or at least update the menu for repeat customers). Very disappointing.

Always fancied a Greek meal on my trips so we tried this place. It was very cold outside so it was great to enter a warm restaurant. Got a table downstairs which had a really winding staircase and unsuitable for the infirm but made it anyway. Service was welcoming and friendly and we ordered a bottle of Othello red wine at £26. Opted for a sharing meze platter at £33.90 which had all the dishes you’d associate with a Greek restaurant. All the food was warm, tasty and good portions. The restaurant was modern and also very busy so booking is essential to get a table. The bill came to £59.90 and wax was a very nice experience. Recommended.

Called in for lunch very busy but everything went smoothly except when leaving I left something behind but that's a good reason to visit again Looking forward to that definitely recommend

We walked in , no booking and we got a table but it was just for 1 hour, which suited us as we're just wanting a quick bite to eat, we both had chicken gyros with homemade chips on side and was delicious, will be back soon

This restaurant reminds me of a photo of a restaurant in Greece, but they forgot to bring the actual flavour and freshly made food. The food was almost like reheated and not at the level of comparable in price places. I was surprised to get this kind of food from so well reviewed restaurant.

We went on a date and we could not decide so we had the mezze sharing platter. It was really good but there was soo much all piled onto one plate. Great atmosphere Decorated like greece It gets busy and its soo busy its hard to get the attention of staff.

Food was very tasty and the portion sizes are very good. Main menu is reasonably priced, with desserts being slightly expensive. Service was quite slow and communication between staff was a real issue. We were asked a couple of times if we wanted desserts and drinks, etc, which we had already ordered. Overall, a good experience had all round, and looking forward to returning. Update 01/03/2024: I arrived as a party of 6 for lunch, and was seated straight away. Service was quick and efficient, and food was as lovely as ever. Therefore, I have revised my review to be 5 stars, rather than the 4 stars overall given previously (and the 3 stars service)!

The staff were lovely and helpful explaining dishes for us. We really enjoyed our meal there and will definitely be dining at Kafeneon again!

It felt more Greek than some tavernas I've visited in Greece!! The food was lovely and fresh, and the service was excellent. I would highly recommend booking as by 1230 it was absolutely rammed.

Excellent place for a meal with the family. We had halloumi and Greek nachos for starters, Greek gyros, souvlaki and beef stifado, all were well presented and tasted amazing. Recommend the walnut cake for dessert. Attentive staff and friendly atmosphere. Food was amazing. Will definitely recommend

Great food and service is standard on every visit, so much better than the chain Greek restaurants. Try the Meze platters, you get bit of everything and a lot! Holidayed in Greece for many years and this is authentic Greek Food.

Had a lovely Saturday evening. It’s so popular I would encourage to reserve a table in advance. Great shared veggie and meat mezze. Will be back next time in the city.

Lovely spot in town that I would recommend going to! The service was superb and the chicken souvlaki was wonderful. The only improvement needed is with the fries that were not edible but otherwise 5/5!

Had a cracking meal here last night. The manager who served us was very friendly, continually smiling, and welcomed us warmly. We had the halloumi and the Greek sausage stew for starters. The Moussaka and a chicken Gyros (without tzatziki) for mains. Glass of wine and a bottle of beer came to £40.35. Food was hot, fresh tasting, and the salad crisp. Will definitely consider returning next time we're in Newcastle.

Welcoming by staff upon arrival, we didn't book and chose dishes from the set day menu. Nice food and portion size. Will visit again in the future.

I appreciated the fast and friendly service and they offer a decent selection for vegetarians. While the atmosphere was pleasant and intimate, it didn't particularly stand out. My starter was nice. However, I found my main a little bland in flavor and slightly heavy. The pricing, at £24 for 2 courses and a coffee, felt fair although perhaps leaning towards the expensive side. Overall, it was OK but nothing stood out to me that would make me want to go back.

I've been coming here for years and as always, the food was delicious, the staff went above and beyond, and we had a great evening.

First time visitors who have to say this place is great. Food is excellent, staff are all better than needed and the prices (excluding beer) are perfect. We will return! Update in Jan 2024: We have returned many times now and have realised that booking a table is optimal. The place is so busy that booking is the only way. This is the best Greek food in Newcastle for sure.

This is a great little restaurant. Starters and mains feel home made age and with good quality ingredients. Gyros are great. The sauces also deserve praise as do dips and flat breads. The cocktails vary. Worth asking first what glass it comes in. The bramble (gin cocktail)comes in a small glass and thus tastes very alcoholic. But I've had really nice cocktails previously. Nice service and welcoming. Highly recommended.

WOW visited on 20/1/2024 lunch. From when we walked in it felt so welcoming. The staff were amazing so attentive, the food amazing. Lovely and clean. We eat out a lot and this is truly a peice of Greek paradise...Thank you so much we will be back.

A bit disappointed… as a greek person I was expecting better food. Cons: the food was below average. We ordered the pork souvlaki main and requested it without a salad. The souvlaki was very salty (seasoning failed) and of average quality. The fries were re-fried and super oily, some burned, really not edible (see photo). We didn’t touch them. After we finished our meal we mentioned to the waitress that the fries were not fit for consumption. She apologised and checked in the kitchen. She came back with a £2 discount on our bill which is a bit ridiculous. We also ordered Lamb Kleftiko. The meat was good but the potatoes were literally swimming in oil (see photo). This came with a “Greek salad”, which wasn’t greek at all! Mostly iceberg with no dressing and a thin slice of tomato (Greek salads main ingredient is tomato and does not contain lettuce or iceberg). Tzatziki and olives were delicious! Pros: the waitress was polite. The atmosphere was nice.

10/10 would recommend. The starters were amazing. We had the spicy sausage as starter and the gyros as main course, simply Amazing! Fast and friendly/good service and good food for a good price.

We had a lovely, cosy table in the window. The food was quick considering me ordered the meze and was absolutely delicious! The staff were so welcoming and friendly. We were constantly checked up on during our time here. We will definitely be returning!

Works xmas function organised by a colleague, we we shown upstairs to our own private room, super friendly staff, fast and efficient. Food was absolutely delicious, I had the halloumi fries and the big fat Greek gyros which was stunning. Well looked after, an excellent experience. Will be coming back here more often!

Called here with my friend before going to the theatre and it was fantastic. We had the sharing meze starter, I highly recommend. Hummus and tzatziki were lovely, halloumi and pitta to die for! Stuffed vine leaves unbelievable. Everything perfect. Choosing from the menu was the hardest part as there are so many tasty options! We both opted for chicken gyros and it was a huge portion and delicious. All very authentic Greek dishes. The service was great! Atmosphere lovely. We had cocktails which were perfect too. Booked to come here for lunch with family on a day trip to Newcastle. We had no expectations before we arrived but the food and service were excellent and totally exceeded my expectations! On arrival we were greeted by friendly and welcoming staff and taken straight to our table. We were all surprised by how busy the restaurant was and how big it was over 3 floors (or even more!!). The restaurant is light and airy and well presented. Our orders were taken quickly and starters arrived in no time at all. Everyone said how tasty they were and looked forward to our mains which did not disappoint. I had the lamb kofta pitta which came with some of best chips I’ve tasted! Everyone was so happy with their food and the quality of the food was excellent. Staff were available when we needed anything and were always really pleasant. When we were waiting to leave 2 walk in diners arrived and were greeted warmly even though they looked concerned they had no reservation. I am sure they would have received the same great food and service we did! I can’t wait to go back again!

I was in Newcastle for work recently and needed to go for dinner. After walking g around a bit I went into the restaurant as it was busy and I thought that's a good sign. The staff were all very friendly, but unfortunately I found the food bland and not very authentic. I have visited different areas in Greece many times, so I have a reference point. I had a starter (tzaziki & hoummus) and main (gemista) from the pre-theatre menu, which was a reasonable price. The portion size was good, but overall very bland. The tzaziki had barely any garlic in but herbs instead which it didn't need, and houmous very dry. The gemista was swimming in a tomato sauce and served with some salad bits, that was missing olive oil. So overall disappointing I'm afraid.

Having been meaning to visit for a long time, we finally took the plunge and so glad we did! Nice relaxed atmosphere with really friendly and attentive staff. Food was delicious, we had a big fat Greek gyros and a chicken souvalaki, with some of the best halloumi fries I’ve ever had on the side which came with an amazing sweet chilli dip. Washed down with you a bottle of Mythos I felt like I was back in Greece for an hour - until we walked outside into the rain! Will definitely be a repeat visitor going forward when we need the taste of Greece!
