Orwells at Shiplake in South Oxfordshire

We travelled from Liverpool as a planned trip to fit in this lunch. It did not disappoint, from tasty canapés, followed by a stunning amuse bouche, our courses hit all the taste notes, complex, seasoned, rich, layered and lingered, not much more to say. Sweetbreads 5*, steak tartare 5*, duck 5* and fallow deer.5*. As seasoned foodies (my husband is also an exceptional fine dining chef) we enjoyed every mouthful. No small bites of food here… great value. Thank you throughly enjoyed it.

Brilliant cooking. What a find. Ate from the a la carte menu and the flavours / presentation/ overall quality was exceptional. And in these days of soaring costs where everything seems to take you by surprise, the value here was again excellent! Ten out of ten, more if I could. Well done to the Orwell’s team.

I’ve wanted to go for ages, but never managed more than their (delicious) take aways during lockdown. Finally went for the full monty - which is now a huge tasting menu (if there is an a la carte it’s well hidden) though you can have half a tasting menu (a mere 7 courses). The amuse set the scene with a tasty croquette and a weird lemongrassy stale foam/biscuit. Hit and miss. So the rest of the meal. Delicious turbot - literally inedible “garden pasta”, which turned out to be courgette stalks. Apparently, there’s a reason people don’t usually eat them. Maybe it was delicious in the spring, but it’s the only time I’ve ever not eaten a dish at a fancy restaurant (or almost any restaurant). The OFC (Orwell’s fried chicken) was mysteriously served on a bed of limes and dry ice (good photo op only), even more mysteriously with caviar on top. I love caviar - but not on my fried chicken (the coating of which fell off). Deer faggot with horseradish ice cream tasty and interesting, lamb cutlet boring - not even particularly good lamb which was disappointing. Desserts were best, both the deconstructed crumble and especially the well presented and effective chocolate sphere filled with different mousses. The staff were great, friendly and helpful. The sommelier refreshingly laid back but maybe too studiously “what’s that grape called again?” Good choices of wine, and the surprise Frangelico with the chocolate sphere worked really well. Overall, felt the food was too ambitious. Better to provide fewer courses but make sure they are all spot on.

What a fabulous restaurant. The food just stunning, beautifully prepared and cooked with wonderful flavours. What more can you ask for. Service discreet but attentive and timely. We will return. Why has it taken us so long to make our first visit!!

What a lovely discovery. Great menu and amazing service , whats not to like? I am already planning on my return to hopefully try out all my second choices. It really is very good, quality and preparation of food was really good far better than many one stars we have visited. The ambiance is very pleasant and the service individual and personal just what you would hope forna restaurant like this. Certainly worth a visit

My husband and I visited for the first time this week, and wow! What a beautiful little gem. We started with drinks in the garden, and we’re bought some canapés to start (some curried cake, and a garlic croquette - these were delicious!) The waitresses were fantastic from start to finish - special mention to Georgia who was particularly helpful. Then we had 3 courses each, all were beautifully presented and delicious - stand outs for us, we’re the courgette flower starter, duck main and the rhubarb pudding. We will be back for sure! A perfect childfree treat for us! Thank you.

We left Henley on Thames with the Festival Audience walking down the High Street to the Venue. The men were trying to look comfortable in DJs on a hot humid evening and the ladies were finding that high heels may be sartorially desirable but a bit of a bother on the slabs and drain covers of the pavements. The relaxed casual dress code of Orwells was perfect for the evening. The Fairmile Classic Cuvee sparkling wine was particularly enjoyed by my wife who is discerning (fussy?). Unfortunately I had the privilege of driving. Bread with butter and honey was a nice touch. The pork belly and Jersey Royals were fine. The lobster was notable with a generous portion well cooked, so many chefs get it wrong. A table of seven on a Saturday night is always a challenge for a kitchen. The octopus arrived, six of my party had a tough, overcooked offering; one person was lucky. One couple had just returned from Portugal, and another had owned property there for a number of years – they know a bit about octopus cookery. The waiter consulted the chef and reported that it was cooked in a Green Egg. Knowledgeable son advised that it was a barbeque. Workmen and tools come to mind. The only armament we were allowed for the beef was a small spoon. All that was needed, the cheek was definitely melt in the mouth. The Muntjac was very well cooked, and the desserts were perfect for the finale. The service was timely, efficient and unobtrusive. Overall, a pleasant evening with good food. Willingly paid the optional service charge. Back to Henley, to observe the returning Festival Audience finding out that DJs are useless in the rain and the ladies carrying the high heels. Bare feet were the answer.

Excellent food, great service, just a lovely place to eat. Been there twice this week, Sunday with my wife, best Sunday lunch of anywhere we go in the area and again today for a celebratory lunch with four friends. On both occasions everything we ate was excellent. Top marks for the Sunday roast - the beef in particular - and the veal sweetbreads today. Ambience is delightful, staff are charming, really couldn’t fault anything.

I’ve been to Orwell’s before and it’s always been friendly with fabulous food and excellent service. I’ve recently moved closer and wanted to review following the last few months because I truly think the guys deserve it! Since lockdown they’ve fully thrown themselves into helping the community with their on line shop and they’ve regularly been my weekend treat with their delicious cooking. It’s always tricky as I’m gluten free so even places that often do cater had limited menus which excluded me. Nothing’s ever too much for these guys, they always adjust the ingredients for me, it’s always tasty and they always hand the food over with a smile and a chat. Their fish and chips are AMAZING, if you haven’t had them, get ordering, you’re missing out! Thanks for all your hard work guys

We visited Orwells for the first time a few weeks before the lockdown. Had a fabulous experience and was looking forward to returning.Was chatting with a friend about the lack of flour in the supermarkets and they suggested Orwells Community Shop. Went on-line and ended up ordering flour and a couple of their pre-prepared meals and other treats. Just finished dinner and have to say we were very happy indeed. Obviously lacking the amazing staff looking after us but still restaurant quality food.Bearing in mind we live half an hour away I was pleasantly suprised they would even deliver to us.In these challanging times I am always amazed at the efforts some businesses go to to keep their customers happy. It's places like this that will reap the rewards for their efforts when things do get back to normal. Can count on us as being one of their first customers back when the lockdown ends.Thank you Orwells and all your team! Wishing you all the luck in these challanging times.

With this restaurant closed due to coved-19 Ryan & Liam have branched out to help feed the nation well locally at least. They have introduced a selection of dishes that they will deliver giving great food to customers. We had seafood pie that was very tasty and easy to cook. Puds where great and tasty as we're the scollops and black pudding. The sourdough bread, honey and ham from the community shop topped up our supplies.Great food and service - well done for thinking of us who are self isolating.

Absolutely delicious British food. Went there with the family for a Sunday lunch and we were all really impressed with the cooking. Unpretentious and really well done. They also have an interesting selection of aromatic non-alcoholic cocktails. Yes it is quite far from London but we are really glad we made the trip out.

After seeing how fantastic Ryan and Liam’s food looked on James Martin’s tv programme we decided to go for Sunday lunch and we were not disappointed. The staff were so welcoming and attentive with excellent table service. The restaurant itself was lovely and cosy with a relaxed vibe. A great bar and lounge area to have a pre lunch drink and for the gin lover over 25 unique and delicious gins to choose from! Our food was absolutely delicious, high quality, locally sourced and all homemade including the bread and even the butter with honey from their own bees! We will definitely be back!

Went to Orwells with friends to celebrate a birthday. We've started with cocktails followed by the full tasting menu with the wine pairing. Everything was just brilliant! The dishes were creative but not overwhelming - a real delight! The wines matched the food beautifully. A truly fantastic experience that we can't wait to repeat.We have been visiting Orwells for several years and have seen their progress over this period of time. They are now really at a top level.

We returned for another family meal at Orwell's after a couple on months. The food is outstanding.and the wine list interesting and reasonably priced. However, when discussing the attraction of his great restaurant/bar in Venice, the original and legendary 'Harry's Bar', Arrigo Cipriani said 'They come herew only 20% for the food (which is good) and 80% for the service and the atmosphere. On our recent visit to Orwell's, this is where they failed. While service was quite good, the whole restaurant had been heated to a furnace level of thirty degrees Centigrade. This made our party uncomfortable and detracted from the meal. Despite requesting the temperature to be lowered, nothing changed and in the end In was forced to cut short my meal.

Arnaud, Rory and the team surpassed themselves with lunch, the food was amazing and the service was excellent, they really deserve Michelin stars. My friends compared and prefer Orwells to the Hand and Flowers, we're already planning our next visit.

We saw the chefs appear on James Martin and thought we would seek out their restaurant......we were so glad we did. Great atmosphere as soon as we arrived, with friendly and knowledgeable staff. The food used great ingredients, that were locally sourced and all of the dishes were fantastic to taste. We look forward to returning to try the Taster Menu........

I grew up in Shiplake and even did some waitressing work one evening at Orwells a while back (I broke a cloche and never returned, but let's gloss over that...) - Orwells has come a very long way since they first opened in Shiplake. The quality of the food is absolutely outstanding now and they just keep upping their game. The sourdough is the best I've ever had...I would go back just for that sourdough, with what i call "proper" butter and honey. These chefs care about their ingredients and it really shows and this is what you pay for. It is great to hear that some ingredients are grown locally and am so excited to try their honey from Shiplake bees! It is a great privilege to be able to call them our local :)

Three Yanks and one Brit dined at Orwell’s as a special occasion Expat Thanksgiving feast. We had a gracious and lovely dining experience. The service was intimate as well as the setting. The menu changes daily, depending on availability of local fare and produce. The wine selection was lovely, and our sever helped us pair wines with our dung choices. There is a fixed price and an al la carté menu. If you are in the mood for inventive and explorational dining, then you will enjoy Orwell’s.

Family get together to celebrate a birthday. The welcome and service were very good from the outset. There was a good choice of food and drink to support all our tastes. Each of us came away talking about when we could next return. The empty plates at the end of each course spoke for themselves. Next time we will want to try the full tasting menu!!

If you want to eat innovative food using quality produce then this is the place to go. Service is attentive and in no way rushed plus any questions on the menu were answered with no hesitation. The bread is made on site and is a brilliant sourdough with fantastic crust but the food is amazing and we would recommend anything here with Lobster or the sweetbreads which shows great skill in cooking as these can be ruined very easily. We will definitely be back as there is nowhere else doing this quality of food or cooking in the area.

Orwell’s take on the traditional ploughman’s started this exploration of inventiveness in the kitchen and joy at the table and the first starter of chicken with Exmoor caviar and a striking kafir lime accompaniment prepared us for the terrific dashi-splashed scallops followed by the most beautiful Skye langoustine with its whisky sauce and perfect apple cube contrast. Local hen of the woods mushrooms with their meatiness balanced by crunchy celeriac then led us into an unusual and gratifying potato dish heralded by the scent of Wiltshire truffles bountifully spread on a Jersey royal potato salad. The high spots just kept on coming with beautiful cod with a yoghurt sauce and brilliantly judged nduja, and a surf and turf wonder with shredded Cornish crab and beef cheek in a deeply flavoursome sauce which was succeeded by an A. Wong style sweet and sour pork mangalitza - the crackling quite delicate and the dish a wonderful example of textures. Tender local muntjac barbecued with Bajan spices was served with wonderful crapaudine beetroot and Roscoff onions before a perfect palate cleanser of sorrel with coconut yoghurt and local honey and then super apple meringue crumble with a white chocolate “Aero” garnish and clever ginger ice cream brought this terrific feast to a fitting end. We know that the red guide can take many years before it follows the Good Food Guide’s ratings but this is a particularly blatant example!

This was our second visit and oh what a difference since our visit in May 2019.

It was a lovely destination for our anniversary celebration. A small intimate converted pub, lovely relaxed ambience. The staff were fantastic, very attentive. They very kindly gave us a special anniversary plate with a candle (see pic). We went for the full taster menu, it was delicious but be prepared to be there for a while we were there for 4 hours! All in all great experience.
