Shieldaig Bar and Coastal Kitchen in Highland

Dropped in for a pint at the end of a very long days walk up from Applecross. It was an absolutely stunning evening so opted for some al fresco dining by the shore of the loch rather than cooking at my tent! Ordered the cheese burger and fries and it was excellent - and no more pricey than your average city centre or lake district gastro pub. Staff were very friendly and the atmosphere inside the bar was nice. Enjoyed the local Strathcarron ales! I look forward to visiting again!

We love Shieldaig and have been to the restaurant before so we thought we would give it a second try. We ordered monkfish scampi and baked scallop special. The scampi was very dry and lacked flavour and the scallop dish was just unusual. No whole scallops. Instead translucent thin slices on a bed of very garlicky spinach and breadcrumbs. I eat out regularly and enjoy decent food, often ordering scallops when on the menu as I really enjoy them. I also hate complaining and avoid it at all costs. However on this occasion I simply had to mention that the scallops totally lacked flavour. The dish tasted of garlicky spinach and that is all. Very disappointing. I mentioned to the waitress who said she would let the kitchen staff know but no discount on the bill. Disappointing food and overall experience so sadly don’t think we’ll be back which is a shame given the lovely setting and how much we love Shieldaig.

Bangers and mash were a hit. Haggis bon bons also tasty. Seafood looked good but didn’t try (allergic unfortunately). Busy place so book a table. Nice staff. Ate here 2 nights in a row.

This place does fantastic fish, I mean really good. They have plenty of other options if fish is not your thing. The location and view is spectacular and the owners are really lovely

A lovely friendly pub. We visited for lunch with our young daughter and the dog. Lacto free options were catered for without any fuss. We sat in the bar as we had our dog with us, he was made to feel very welcome and received several treats. The food was excellent. We will definitely return.

😡😡 My visit to this restaurant was a complete disappointment. Despite appealing photos and glowing comments on social media, the reality was quite the opposite. No local and fresh products were to be found! The food was of mediocre quality, almost inedible. I strongly advise against relying on attractive images on social media or positive comments. This restaurant does not live up to its online portrayal at all. If you're seeking a pleasant culinary experience, I recommend looking elsewhere. It's a culinary letdown to avoid at all costs.

This place is great for dinner. We have eaten here a few times and it never fails to disappoint. The smoked salmon starter, crayfish starter and soup were absolutely amazing, and stated delicious. There was a large specials board filled with local fish, local produce, and homemade pies. There were plenty of vegetarian options, and lots of local food which we loved. I had a seafood tagliatelle and it was amazing. The staff were attentive, polite, kind and professional. There’s outside seating on the loch, and a terrace above the restaurant. The bar below has a great selection of wines, beers and spirits, and the whole bar and restaurant had a lovely buzz about it, busy with locals and tourists. I’d definitely recommend this place for couples, friends or families.

Food was delicious. The langoustine curry was very tasty. Fish and chips were also nice. Portions are on the smaller side but then again we became accustomed to some of the Scottish portions we experienced which were rather large! Very tasty. Nice little dig 😊

Can't fault this place. I'd wanted Langoustines the whole trip and this was one of our final stops before we finish the NC500 and it was perfect. Some may feel its higher priced but it's worth the money.

Nc500 highlight we have just returned from doing the NC500 and have to say shielding was the hidden gem off the trip fresh seafood and local fisherman in the bar telling the story what more could you want. Thank you again for a lovely visit

we were a bit disappointed overall. we expected a limited winter menu, which it was, but we weren't that impressed with either the service, which was sort of ok, the choices or what we ended up ordering. it wasn't bad, it just wasn't good

I was there with a party of 5 including a 7 year old child. We waited 1hr and 20minutes for our food to arrive which in its self is unacceptable. There was no communication about late running from the staff whatsoever. Further to this we had a vegan in our party. I ordered a beef burger special and she ordered a vegan burger. I had tried this beyond meat burger myself and recommended it to her. The food came and we were very hungry so tucked in. We double checked with the waiter if the cheese and mayo on the vegan burger was definitely vegan too and were assured that it was. Half way through my partner asked how the burger was, and at this point I realised the blue cheese was missing! At which point the realisation struck that we had been given the wrong burgers with the meat one going to our Vegan. She had not eaten red meat for 30 years and was most upset. I explained to the waiter who was not very concerned or apologetic. He came back and said the kitchen had labelled them wrongly, apologised, and said he would take the cost off the bill. The scallops ordered were cut into slices, weird, never seen that before. Over all not a pleasant experience. We eat out a lot and know good service and food. we know vegan food has come a long way and is very meat like, like I say, I got half way though the beyond meat burger before noticing there had been a mistake.

I went for a meal this evening with my family. The food took over an hour to arrive. I ordered the vegan burger, and when it eventually did arrive I asked again if it was vegan and they reassured me that it was, the burger was not vegan it was meat. I haven't eaten meat for over 25 years. I am so upset and angry, wondering if I can sue them! They said they got the order mixed up! Not good enough!

Quaint little restaurant known for its seafood. I was disappointed with some foods not being available, but that was due to the extreme weather. Good menus with plenty of other choices. Excellent hosts, very attentive.

Being ten minutes past 8 did cost us our place and we were sit in the pub with the same food options. They are great 👍 but as we weren't up for something fancy on a wet day we just went with good old fish and chips. And we didn't find them great to be honest or at least they did not meet our estimations. But giving this three stars would likely not be fair. The staff was nice but the pub can be quite loud downstairs. Beer selection could be greater as well as non alcoholics. As someone might also need to drive. Outside seating is really awesome though and there is a really great coffee machine.

A quiet and welcoming spot with lower level pub with upper level dining room service. There is lovely outdoor seating if you’re there the right time of year. Be sure to call ahead; limited seating and availability. Don’t hesitate to call same day late into the season, however, as we had luck getting in same day for an early dinner (early October). There is open seating in the pub but expect competition. Best off with a reservation. Excellent local seafood specials, including a platter with a sampling of all the in-season delicacies. Mussels starter was perfect! Scallops were perfectly done. Seafood platter was VERY generous. Highly recommend!

Food excellent and lovely friendly service. We went on a Sunday and hadn’t realised they do a Sunday roast but it did run out at about 6:30. Fish we had was amazing and the seafood chowder was fantastic.

We spent two lovely evenings eating out at Shieldaig Bar and Coastal Kitchen. There was a great selection of dishes, most using fresh, high quality, local sea food/other produce; despite being a coastal kitchen, there were good options for vegetarians - the vegetarian pizza was a particular highlight! The bar also had a great selection of beers/gins/other drinks for us to enjoy. Friendly staff and wonderful atmosphere!

What a super place! Run very efficiently by two guys on the day we visited, who took everyone in, trying to flee the rain. We only had delicious coffee, but the food looked fantastic and I wish we had been staying for lunch. Do not miss this place, you will not be disappointed by the food or service, whatever you are there for!

OK so let me start by saying we were late for our reservation by 7 minutes, (14.30) that's on us, we know we were late. However, the SHEER GLEE the barman had by telling us we couldn't have dinner was the thing that was terrible. He could have said, come back at 17.30 (which we learned after other people came in to ask for food) we will happily do you some dinner then. But he didn't. It was like he made total judgement on us because we were a bit late. He had zero customer service skills and perhaps could do with having a training course in hospitality if that is what he wants to do. Looking at other reviews it seems like we aren't the only ones this has happened to. Also why keep the condiments and cutlery on the table if you are not serving food? . Bottom line - if you can book at 14.30 get here for 13.30 because their booking system means nothing. If you can make a booking at 14.30 why have they shut the kitchen already? Make the latest booking at 14.00. This is the first review I have ever done because I really feel this bloke in particular was a bit vindictive actually. Felt very welcome so far in our 2 week trip to Scotland, this is the first time I have not.

On days that are slightly less Scottish, this is a good spot to sip a drink and enjoy the surroundings.

I have never in my life seen a restaurant that doesn't serve food because they are too busy. They close at 11 p.m. and when I ordered it was 7:30 p.m. The worst thing was that it was the only restaurant in the area and there were no more possibilities to put something in your mouth. It is clear that there are people who do not want to make money. Thanks, I'm going to bite my nails.

Nice food but if sitting outside you have to get a takeaway at same price as indoors so I recommend sitting in

Went here after being turned away from another pub after being told fully booked. Big atmosphere and plenty of choice from the menu and bar. Staff were welcoming, friendly and attentive. You got plenty in your plate for the price and reasonable costs.

Stayed overnight, alright apart from passing vehicles over cattle grid.

I ordered a seafood platter, and nowhere on the menu did it mention that all the fish would be served cold. There is no way for a cold dinner should it cost 30 pounds.

Meh £61 for 2 x scampi and chips and a kids portion of fish and chips. Served in a box as only allowed the "takeaway" menu. Confusing cost, as I've never spent that amount on a takeaway for 2 people. Fine, charge a lot but provide a plate and call it a garden menu. Food was good, though has to listen to a lot of swearing fro locals and landlord which wasn't really necessary. They were discussing a young lady who was clearly friends with all of them...but much to listen to but apparently she goes like an "f..tank" Great location, great food, prices higher than I've ever seen served in a weird way with cavemen in the background.

Not a great experience...had checked the website which confirmed that dogs were allowed then booked a table...on arrival were told that dogs in fact weren't allowed upstairs in the dining area so we'd have to eat in the bar. While ordering at the bar a local drinker downloaded about his dislike of tourists in general and motorhomers in particular...frustrating when during our 24 hour visit we spent the best part of £200 with three local tourism businesses. The local beer (Loch carron blonde cow) was superb but the food disappointing...the chowder for starter had plenty of fish in it but was overly creamy to my taste and under seasoned so was curiously flavourless. We shared a small seafood platter for the main course which again was disappointing...the single oyster had a strange mucous slime on it (and no shallot vinegar or tobasco offered) so we didn't eat it. The hot smoked salmon was delicious - delicately smoked and still moist, yum! The muscles are shrivelled so again we didn't eat most of them and the cream was missing entirely...when we asked for it and it arrived it was a curious grey colour, didn't have the flakiness you'd expect it crab and looked almost as if it had come from a tin - wish we hadn't pointed out that it was missing. The langoustine and and smoked mackerel were thankfully five so we did at least get something to eat. In all...a perfect location, tasty looking menu but poorly delivered and frankly, unappetising despite the high cost, 😞

17 pounds for a burger that has only a leaf of salad and nothing more alongside the patty, not even the on the menu mentioned gherkin, has left us feeling disappointed and like we wasted our money.

I expected Shieldaig to be beautiful but it was simply stunning. We stayed at the hotel attached to the pub and everything about our stay was first class. The hotel had lots of lovely rooms to relax in and breakfast was amazing. I only wish we could have stayed for more than one night so that we could have tried more things from the menu. The staff were all super-friendly and helpful and the locals were friendly and fun. The seafood platter in the evening was amazing, everything super-fresh and gorgeous. The desserts looked fabulous but we couldn't have eaten any more. We loved it and hope to be back up in Sheildaig for a longer stay sometime soon.

Starting with the positives, it has a nice atmosphere and my pork belly was really very good. However, there were problems that would be forgivable had it been cheaper. The £22 lamb was under portioned-- oddly not just in the meat but with a tiny portion of mash so that the plate was half empty. The chips for the £24 Monkfish Scampi at were delivered cold.

Must visit! Best muscles and fish platter we have EVER had!! We come from the coast in Spain and the fish here was incomparable to anything we’ve had before. Absolutely delicious. Brilliant environment and incredible service, everyone was so lovely! No matter where you are right now in the world this place is worth the detour! Thank you!!

The food was good and tasted great. We had fish and chips and the fresh langoustines. The only reason why I don't give the food 5 stars is because the saled wasn't clean properly and that wasn't nice. The tables are too close to each other, so that was a little uncomfortable. Great place and I absolutely enjoyed it.

We stopped here for dinner because it was close to our campsite. The pub was packed even on a Wednesday, but the bartender allowed us to order from the takeaway menu and sit outside (with an incredible view of the loch). The food was absolutely delicious and very reasonably priced. I would camp in Shieldaig again just to come back to eat here!

Nestled in the very small and romantic town of Shieldag is this extraordinary little restaurant. We were pleasantly surprised by the setting and food. Upstairs has a beautiful view of the lake from inside the small dining area. For starters we had the seafood chowder which was fresh and flavourful. Main course was the pork belly, which I thoroughly enjoyed! My guests had the seafood platter and langoustines. The seafood spread was excellent, the only thing I can pick at is that the Langoustines were not cleaned properly. I understand that this is common in some of these towns, however the taste is unpleasant and strong. Overall it was a good night and we will return.

Great food! Chef Wayne used coriander in the Moule’s Marinière which was sensational. Langoustine starter and Angus Steak Burger just as good as the Moules! Thoroughly recommend although you need to book as extremely busy.

What could go amiss with a bowl of tomato soup and a piece of ‘sourdough’ bread? I took a bite of the doorstep of white bread in front of me. It was soft, stale and had a ‘cakey’ texture. It was past its best and could not be classed as a traditional sourdough loaf which has a distinctive taste, smell, texture and appearance. The soup was well presented with a swirl of pesto. OK so far. But the soup was so very sweet, very salty and just warm. It tasted terrible and was a really poor example of tomato soup. The bill was £13 for two soups. Terrible value for money. What were we expecting? Fresh bread, a little good quality butter (the butter we were served was rancid) and some freshly made soup made with a good stock, and the flavour of some fresh vegetables. The table next to us had stale cigarette buts which was really off putting. Potentially this is a lovely place to eat but a lot more care needs to be taken with the food.

Arrived 1428 to be told lunch was stopped very disappointed as this place looked lovely. They lost 3 lunches at least and a recommendation.

A perfect stop for a meal in a great location with good food and good service. We ate upstairs where it’s a little more open and lighter with higher ceilings and a great view over the loch. It was wet and windy the day we...

All in all good and not too expensive, although I thought toilets like these are gone these days. Time for an upgrade. Friendly staff and nice food variety. More or less simple but also homemade food. Very good for also for families

Nice food (and that's all that really matters). 2 starters, 2 mains, 2 glasses of wine and 1 cheese board came to £95, without tip, which I thought was a little expensive. Maybe that's the extra cost of rural dining.

An amazing local pub/restaurant. Staff are lovely and couldn't do enough for you. Food was fabulous, high quality, good value and made with perfection the chefs are obviously very good at what they do. We were visiting while doing the NC500 route and found a camping site here who suggested the local village! One of the best places we stayed!

Had the most delicious meal here today. Honestly cannot fault it. The soup was divine. The beyond meat burger was delicious and the garlic bread oh wow! Beautiful surroundings. It was a great way to end my holiday in Scotland. Would definitely return here if I was able to!

£18:00 for a fish supper. Two tiny pieces of fish, some chips. I told them I want my money back, they handed it back without a quibble. No way will I be back there.

INCREDIBLE LANGOUSTINES!!! So fresh, light, delicious. 10/10 always and forever. Lunch until 2:30pm super friendly staff, beautiful view, lovely restaurant
