The Barn Bar and Country Kitchen in Down

The Barn has become a family favourite in the local area. It has a good bustling atmosphere and always seems to be pleasantly busy. There js a good variety of dishes and all prepared and presented tremendously. And the bar is decent as well.

Seen a sign for this place on the way home from a day out in Portaferry . We arrived at the empty restaurant to be told we needed to book & they would be unable to accommodate us in their empty open for business restaurant . Not a good place for a quick bite , took custom elsewhere.

Looking forward to the next time. Lovely wood burning stove, kept topped up. Well cooked, if a little salty, steak pie. Man sized portion, so couldn't finish it. Absolutely lovely place. Nicely decorated. We will be back, but will choose something else from the menu. There was a good choice, but it was a 'comfort food' day!!

What a hidden gem ! Place deserves an award

We stopped in for lunch on the off chance they could take us and we had the most fabulous meal. Very varied menu so it was hard to choose - fantastic array of starters and specials. Everything was absolutely gorgeous and we were very pleasantly surprised by the bill. Will most definitely return.

This is where I had a first-rate Christmas Dinner with my friends in the church choir. Two courses, or three, depending on your choice. I left with my belly full to bursting point. Plus friendly, attentive staff and a lively but not too noisy atmosphere. A great way to round off the year!

Had lunch with my niece to celebrate her 18th. All staff were really friendly, the interior is beautiful and it was spotless. The food was amazing we had duck pancakes to start, pork belly and the goujons for mains, we cleared the lot and had no room for dessert so we'll have to visit again soon 😋😋

Phenomenal meal. Had the pork belly and the ingredients were such high quality and the meal was unbelievably delicious and so well balanced. Atmosphere was amazing and staff were so lovely. Such good value for money too. Recommending this place to everyone we know in the area!

Beautiful place and friendly atmosphere

Excellent gnocchi with soft pumpkin chunks and delicious sweet potato fries. They even brought sweets with the check. I highly recommend!

Called in for lunch. as always food was lovely but bit hit and miss on the portion size, we have noticed. table staff were good for my food allergies. They use to do a chocolate GF tart but sadly think that chef must have moved on as they never have it anymore. The reason I only gave 4marks was the cutlery, cups and teapot in bad order. I mean bent forks for both of us chip cups and teapot, am sure it would take much to take them out of service. And bleach bath and a wash in the dishwasher would go a miss. Good value for money.

Young woman spat on and hit my friends, when reported to bar staff we were told she isn't usually like this. she continued with similar aggravating behaviour throughout the evening to no repercussions. wouldn't recommend to anyone.

It seems that a visit to The Barn is hit and Miss. On a previous visit, food was excellent, so much so, that i brought friends for a visit - disappointed is an understatement! Couldn’t believe the portion size, the blandness of the chicken and mushroom sauce dish - tiny portions of chips, a strawberry daiquiri served in a martini glass, it had no ice, no dressing, and was a glass of strawberry syrup! Quality and Quantity need to be consistent!

As soon as we entered the place, the waitress asked if we had a booking. Restaurant was empty but waitress was delighted to tell us that she couldn’t accommodate us at 5:30pm on a Tuesday. Definitely won’t be back.

If I could give this place zero stars I would walked in with my partner at 5pm on a Tuesday evening we weren’t greeted at all just a rude waitress who asked if we had a booking no hello or good evening she returned 5 minutes later to say they couldn’t accommodate us yet the restaurant was empty needless to say we won’t be back

Food is amazing here, service can be a little slow but has been quiet when I’ve been in so perhaps less staff on. Great breakfasts 🍳 Reasonably priced and great atmosphere

Fabulous countryside setting with outdoor seating and a covered area too where you can sit and bring the dog. Great atmosphere friendly staff that makes for a pleasant visit

Simple the best food I have ever had, excellent quality and quantity. The staff are exceptional, attentive and polite. I was with my disabled mother and asked for help bringing her in and immediately the staff were there, helping mum from the car to her table. I cannot praise the Barn and its staff enough. Will most certainly back

Just discovered this place at the weekend. 15 mins from castle ward, great place for a feed after a day hiking. Everything about it was amazing, food, service, atmosphere. Can't wait to get back.

Horrendous. I just wanted to have a quiet meal with my wife but the place was packed full of families with feral kids out of control shouting and screaming and must be one of the noisiest pubs I have been in. We had a drink and left. Not the pubs fault I suppose as it was bank holiday weekend. If you like your peaceful settings then I suggest you try somewhere else.

My company brings coach groups to eat lunch in the Barn from time to time. We find the staff, the food, the promptness of service and the friendliness to be exceptional. It's five stars from Game of Thrones Tours for the Barn bar at Saul.

We live in Saul and attend The Barn quite often. After the sudden death of my brother we booked the barn for a private function following the burial. Myself and the husband met with the chef and the manager to go through menu options as we didn't want any more sandwiches. They were very accommodating and even made my mums favourite - cauliflower cheese. When we arrived the staff were immediately on hand with tea and coffee, which flowed continually throughout the service. the food was of generous portions and it was delicious. Everyone who attended said they were very impressed, and left full. With a large number of children under 12 at my table they were more than accommodating on providing extra chips and sauces. I was told the chicken wings were 'to die for', no pun intended. We even had an unexpected glutton requirement which they immediately dealt with - sorry I forgot to mention it before hand. We walked back to my mums house after finalising the bill and were very touched to see that they had closed the restaurant blinds. Mum's living room looks directly into the restaurant. Michael and his team were great, I couldn't thank them enough for what they did. No doubt you will see us all soon calling over for a lunch. Thank you all so much for your compassion and kindness throughout Sean's send off.

Great place for a family meal. Food is excellent, you'll not leave hungry.

This is a place that you walk in and Immediately feel like your home. It’s cozy and inviting and has the best Guinness pour in Northern Ireland. They have all the classics on the menu but also incorporate modern dishes and they even have a full Veg menu! Everything we tried was delicious!! They have live music on the weekends! We danced and met so many local people who made us feel like part of the community. We will come back to Downpatrick just to go to The Barn, seriously can’t say enough positive things :)

Was on a day out with our son, so we were looking 4ward to lunch at The Cuan in Strangford but when we arrived were told that they close Mon & Tues and to try The Barn at Saul. Well thank you so much we had a lovely lunch and the food was sooo good. Fish batter was so light and the fish so white it was a pleasure to eat.Both hubby and son had meals that they both enjoyed. We had traveled from Bangor and would do so again for food that good. Staff so friendly and attentive and menu has something for everyone at good prices Well done everyone

We we pointed here this afternoon by another restaurant that was closed for the day. That was a big mistake on their part, as this will be our regular go-to when we're down this direction from now on. The food and service was fantastic, as well as being reasonably priced. Can't wait to get back!

Being visitors to the area we by chance came across this place by Google. Telephoned on a Sunday at 11.00am and a very polite girl said they could squeeze us in at 1.00pm. On arrival staff could not have been more attentive or polite. Meal was quickly served roasting hot and very tasty. Followed by wonderful desserts. This place is definitely a hidden gem and well worth finding. Thanks and well done to everyone.

J'ai visité ce restaurant dans le cadre d'un groupe familial. Le restaurant est situé dans la champêtre verdante et boisée. Le personnel nous a accueillis chaleureusement et nous nous sommes assis rapidement. Le menu était varié et les repas que nous avons choisi étaient savoureux, bien présentés avec les sourires des serveuses. Elles étaient attentifs et sympas. Service sans faute du début à la fin. Malheureusement ils n'ont pas un sommelier pour donnait d'avis sur des vins agréable pour des repas choisi. D'ailleurs le seul bémol je pense, était le prix des vins - ils sont trop chers. La pièce était propre, bien rangée et joliment meublée avec une ambiance calme pour tous et toutes. Les tables sont bien espacées aussi. Dans l'ensemble pour moi, une belle expérience et je vous recommande vivement.

Great service and excellent food. I have been several times and it never fails to be less than 5 stars. They cater for anyone with food allergies with the menu clearly labelled, and able to chat and prepare a suitable meal. The decor is bright and warm, even on cold days, with a lovely wood fire. With large windows to take in the wonderful views, bright clean toilet facilities, and disabled access throughout, The Barn is highly recommended.

First class, great food and excellent service

Went along with anniversary couple having reserved a table for 4. Menu was varied and seemed to contain something for all tastes. 4 main courses ordered and were served promptly. Presentation was excellent and everyone enjoyed lovely hot food - goujons, salmon & chicken. Restaurant had a couple of other tables with guest dining at 5:30, but it was noticeable how quickly the remainder of the tables filled up - by 7:30pm every table in the outer part where we were sitting were all used. We noted that several tables had to wait quite some time for their meals - an unacceptable wait in our opinion!! We had 1 pavlova & sticky toffee pudding for dessert- both delicious, and finally 2 coffees and a tea. All in all a good experience. It seems that there may have been recent renovations as the surroundings were pleasantly decorated and in good order. The staff were friendly but not well presented (we felt that the staff wearing what looked like shiny ski pants didn’t reflect the best standards), and we agreed that some staff would benefit from customer service training. Will return if in the area but wouldn’t go out of our way to return.

We visited for Sunday lunch on our family holiday. The food was fabulous and all our party were delighted. The atmosphere was great and the staff very friendly and helpful. Despite great portion sizes we all gave in to an equally delicious dessert!
