The Canteen in Pembrokeshire

Very impressed with the delicious Pizza Verdi and spicy chicken wings, both dishes on the specials board. We would rate it as probably the best Pizza we have ever eaten and that includes on visits to Italy. The chicken wings were very tasty and tender just falling off the bones, finger licking brilliant! Wonderful service, very friendly owners and staff. Altogether an exceptional meal, we couldn't fault it, will definitely go back on our next visit to Newport, Pembs.

We visited 16/4/24 while on holiday. Fantastic food, accommodated the kids sharing no problem, friendly staff, good choice of non-alcoholic drinks and our Dog was well looked after too.

Excellent pizza and service at The Canteen. Dough balls to start with The Welsh Goat and Welsh Italian pizzas. I’m fussy about my pizza base and crust and these were excellent. Couldn’t eat mine so two slices to take home. Too full for dessert. No issue with bringing the dog. Bowl of water and treat offered which was a lovely touch.

Fantastic service and pizzas were amazing! Lovely variety and tasted so good 🥰 highly recommend.

Good vegan sausages in our sausage and egg sourdough rolls.

What a gem :-) They went out of their way to accommodate us and our dogs. They were very busy and could have easily turned us away but went the extra mile which was most appreciated especially as the food was fantastic. If service is your thing then The Canteen scores 10/10.

We visited the Canteen as a family of four and our little dog Gwen. The owners were so welcoming, treating Gwen to a treat and so friendly and accommodating. The pizza was second to none and such amazing portions - our daughter said that the dough balls were the best she'd ever had!

We visit the canteen often as they always win for amazing,good food, fantastic service And all round a lovely time! Stay awesome...we will keep coming back 😊 Thankyou xx

Good to discover that The Canteen is as good as it was on a previous visit a couple years ago. Very friendly staff. Pizza and salad delicious. Prices reasonable. Will return when next in Pembrokeshire.

30 plus people gathered to celebrate Bryan's birthday. Family and friends all enjoyed some great pizzas, sides, starters and desserts. The staff were all friendly, efficient and worked so hard, with us all sitting in but takeouts as well. Thank you for a fantastic night. We will definitely be back 😁

Fantastic food and staff are so friendly.

Thank you to Canteen for feeding 2 hungry travellers looking for dinner last night. Obviously a very busy time for them, 7.40pm on a Friday eve, but they were friendly and welcoming when taking our order. We sat inside and had a cider while we waited and 20 minutes later we were on our way with a delicious Butternut Squash & Perl Las pizza, fries & coleslaw, all really good. Took it down to the estuary and ate our food as the geese came home for the night, amazing stuff!!

Delicious pizza served promptly! Lots of choice of toppings! Would highly recommend the goat’s cheese and ‘Land of my Fathers’ pizza!

We were just passing and decided to eat here as it looked reasonable cost. As no internet signal, we didn’t know this restaurant has such great reviews. So we were very happy to discover such a great place. The vegetarian pizza and coleslaw we shared was perfect, really lovely. The staff were also very friendly. It was obvious this was a very popular place as they were getting a lot of phone orders. Definitely recommend this place.

It's super accommodating, considering we didn't reserve our first visit. The pizza, service and value for money were so good we reserved later in the week for a larger group and The Canteen/staff didn't disappoint, it's a no-brainer we'll be back next year while visiting the local area on holiday.

Fantastic pizzas here last week with really excellent service too. Very busy so you really do have to book. Vegetarian and vegan options too. Lots of locally sourced produce on the menu too. Also visited next morning for breakfast rolls for the adults and churros for the kids - great place!

Ordered a takeaway. Requested 7:15 pickup. Pizzas were ready on the dot. They were mega. The butternut is a pizza revelation. Get involved!

The staff dealt with my food allergy painstakingly and effectively. The pizzas were fantastic- great authentically Italian bases and imaginative toppings using local ingredients. Food and drink very reasonably priced. The staff work really hard and service is quick and friendly.

Cracking pizzas, great atmosphere, friendly and efficient service. A perfect place for an early evening meal. The staff were operating at high levels of activity but still managed to provide what seemed to be a popular takeaway service through a hatch.

Relaxed atmosphere, exceptional food and service. My partner is coeliac and we're always cautious about eating out , have no fears here gluten free pizza base's are available allowing her to eat any pizza not just restricted menu .. booking is advised We will be returning.

Good pizza and even better energy. Very friendly relaxed place, good place to meet people and talk. The pizzas are good, the desserts are wonderful, nice place after a day hiking our checking out the galleries.

We had pizza here for lunch on a sunny day and were lucky to get one of the two tables outside amid the gentle hustle and bustle of lovely Newport. The staff were super friendly and the food was delicious… really fresh and they use quality ingredients - we had one with ham & pineapple, and one with butternut squash, courgette & pine nuts (which also has blue cheese but I didn’t have that) - both pizzas were superb. This place is understandably popular (our outside table was claimed by a family before we’d even finished!) but there were quite a lot of tables inside. Definitely get a table if you can - it’s a lovely place and the food is really delicious.

What a great place. The food is exceptional.( We had the chicken caesar salad, followed by a great almond pudding. )What makes this place so nice is the friendly ,welcoming staff. We only started using it after one of the team ( unprompted) offered our dog a treat when we were passing. Relaxed, good food and dog friendly. A gem.

Milkshake was delicious very chocolatey and cold made fresh. Pizza was good, staff friendly, quick service, clean and comfortable inside.

Good family venue. Great communication for booking, friendly welcome and service and also dog friendly which is helpful if you’re on holiday as we were. Atmosphere was lovely, general noisy babble of lots of different groups chatting and laughing. Food was good too! Plenty of choice for pizza and tasty desserts.

Delicious pizza - great coeliac safe options with a separate oven!

We didn't book a table but we were able to get seated inside although we were told the table was booked for a bit later. We had plenty of time to order pizzas and drinks and delicious affogato without feeling pressured to eat and vacate our seats quickly. The pizzas are delicious, all made to order and you can see them being baked from your table. The staff are friendly and accommodating, I would definitely recommend this restaurant if you fancy a pizza whilst in Newport!

Delicious takeaway pizza. Ordered in advance and food was ready for us to collect hot on time. Friendly staff and made to feel welcome. Was the ideal accompaniment to watching the sunset from nearby Newport Sands!

Absolutely fantastic pizza! So good I visited twice in two days!

Had a really decent pair of pizzas from here. Took them away, picking them up from the window at exactly the time they said they’d be ready. The toppings were put on generously, were fresh and mostly tasty. Their vegan cheese wasn’t substantive, becoming an almost liquid on top of the pizza. It wasn’t cloying like some vegan cheeses but it was insipid and not quite solid enough. Not off putting, but notable. My partner loved their vegetarian pizza with dairy cheese, no notes. We also had a side of chips which were great.

Best pizza in Wales? I've eaten a lot of pizza and am struggling to think of one that's been better. Good menu selection, including a few that you don't tend to find elsewhere. Great service and value. Recommend giving it a try!

Stunning, beautifully sourced local ingredients, cooked to perfection. Amazing staff, very friendly and a warm homely welcome. Weather you're eating in or taking food home to eat watching a movie. Excellent pizza and very good choice of bottled beers from Blue Stone Brewery. On the other hand, I find the pizzas relatively small. Modification: I'm adding a star because they were kind enough to send me back my umbrella that I had forgotten at the restaurant! That’s service 👍

Outstanding food and service. I came in with my mum and dad and our three Shetland sheepdogs. After an epic trek it was nice to find somewhere to chill. The drinks were also great too.

We visited while on holiday and found a flyer in our air bnb - these pizzas were just the ticket after a long day's walk, absolutely delicious, really loved the variety of toppings. They also stock beers from the local brewery. Covid-safe pickup arrangements too, perfect. Delicious.

Had a takeaway here on our holiday 3 pizzas. Due to the rotten pandemic they were just offering takeaway through a window! Lol Tasty, fresh stone baked base. Great staff. Delicious!

Times are hard but this gem of a place continues to provide us visitors with top quality pizzas and service. Newport is busy and with the social distancing in place it can be a bit of a challenge to find anywhere to get food in the evening. They've nailed the whole covid restrictions with an efficient ordering and pick up system. Just take your umbrella in case you have to wait (we didn't!) as you are on the street outside. The pizzas and sides are delicious. The onion rings were the best we've ever had! Thanks guys and really well done!

I’m highly recommending The Canteen! The best pizza available in Newport!!, its worth to drive the miles just to get that pizza especially with pulled pork, perfectly baked and crispy sides. Also loved rich and creamy dips served with chips. Need to mention amazing staff, full of energy, helpful and always smiling they doing wonderful job. The guy with the glasses and a beard was a good host!

Had lunch here whilst on a weekend trip to Newport. It was really lovely and even though they were just about closing they let us and friends order. Thanks and will be in again when next down in the area.

Stopped in Newport on route to south Pembrokeshire. Staff at The Canteen were very welcoming and good choice of different home made pizzas. Would definitely call again if in the area.

We always visit The Canteen when we are down in the area, it's always been amazing a d very chilled. Sadly this visit was far from that. We entered and there was a table of 6 having a birthday meal, and a table of 2. We sat down at a table for 4, the table in the window we usually sit at, had 'reserved' on it, but no-one came to sit there before closing !We ordered our drinks and food. There was a wait of about 15mins for our starter of just one plate of dough balls. Whilst eating these, a gentleman came in an ordered 2 pizzas to take away. He then left the restaurant.Our starter plate was cleared away. Then a couple came in and sat on a table next to us and they ordered food.We then waited near 30mins to get our pizzas. I went to the desk to enquire where our food was, as it was such a long wait since our starters, and the chap who had come in and ordered a 'take away, had come back in and got his pizzas, even though he ordered a good 15mins after us.We were told there was a delay on our pizzas as they had to do the take away order.To say I was furious was an understatement, I had to walk away from the desk !Eventually our pizzas arrived, as did the pizzas for the couple say next to us, who had come in, sat down and ordered at least 20mins after we'd ordered.I was so cross that the chef/staff put the take away order in before us, which left us sitting twiddling our thumbs for nearly half and hour between starter and main, especially as there were only 2 other tables with people on, and we had two young children with us.At no point did any staff come over and explain that our food would be delayed, due to them having to put the take away order through.To add insult to injury, I'd ordered a make your own with serano ham, mozzarella, red onion and rocket. The overriding taste was that of onion, as that was the main ingredient on the pizza, piled up in places. There was hardly and serano ham or mozzarella.I wanted to go up and complain, but after such a long wait, I was too cross and felt I would really lose my rag with them, which I really didn't want to happen in front of my children.We were left really disappointed, especially as we really look forward to our visits there as it is usually superb.Not really sure what else to add.It was all the same staff as other times we have beenNot sure if the chap came in the order the takeaway was a local and as such got preference over us, who knows?All I know is that 30mins between a dough balls starter and your main meal pizza is far too long and unacceptable, and one where I really shouldn't have to go and ask where our food is.

Lovely cafe, great hand made pizza

We ate on a Thursday Evening and all table's were full. The build your own pizza was fabulous, cheese, cheese, cheese, olives oh and pineapple.. great selection of beer and friendly staff. Highly recommended, booking may be important as it's not massive!

Really tasty food sensible prices and good service

Dropped in after a morning at St David's, it's a small venue and dog friendly at lunchtime, I had a beer and the wife a latte, the staff made a huge fuss of our dog and gave him treats and water.We ordered pizza and this was really good, better than some of the large chains who sell this type of food, I would thoroughly recommend this venue, had we stayed longer we would have visited again.

Always tasty and great atmosphere

We always love our visit to the canteen when we come to the area, easily my favourite place to eat in Pembrokeshire. Pizzas are delicious and the puddings are equally as gorgeous, especially the sticky toffee pudding! Thanks again for another great experience, staff and service is always spot on!

Independent restaurant specialising in pizzas but offers other dishes including a daily specials board. Friendly service and great pizzas made and cooked in front of you in the open kitchen. Been here many times and always good. Beers & wines available. Had to settle on a take-away tonight as it was fully booked. On a late October Wednesday night, I think that tells something!

Ordered by phone Half Term Sunday evening at 6pm. 2 x cheese and tomato, 1 x pepperoni, 1 x Strumble (fish) pizzas. Available for collection in individual boxes exactly on time stated - at 6.30pm. Friendly prompt collection/payment. Enjoyed by all - very good pizzas. £38.

We called in for lunch when we happened to be in Newport and were made very welcome; so was our dog, who was immediately offered a bowl of water. We could see the pizzas being made, and very good they were. My partner had a Strumble Head pizza, with smoked mackerel, anchovies and capers and I had a vegan pizza with my own selection of toppings, which we both thought were good value. My partner enjoyed a couple of bottles of local Bluestone Brewery Bedrock Blonde.
