The Hitching Post in Dumfries & Galloway

Not normally one for writing a review, but feel I need to share my thoughts. Myself and 6 others arrived at the restaurant on Saturday 27th April at 8pm. Upon reading the reviews for here I was looking forward to having our meal. However was very unimpressed with the attitude of some of the staff. Ordering food wasnt the best, as more than a few of us had to repeat what we wanted on more than one occasion. I have never felt so awkward and aware of eating food before. The whole table was constantly stared at from the bar area by more than one member of staff. This isn't a nice vibe to enjoy a meal with. Food was nice, can't complain about it. But definitely feel as though your staff should attend a customer service course. Sadly won't be back as feeling uncomfortable while out for a meal isn't my kind of vibe. Disappointed as reviews were good.

Cammy and Lee are fantastic as are all the staff. Chicken and ribs are amazing, hard to pick a fabourite as all dishes are so good. Couldn't ask for a better dinning experience

Staff are always friendly, the atmosphere of the restaurant is lovely. The food is exceptional, myself and family have sampled quite a lot of the menu on our multiple visits to The Hitching Post. The bar has a nice selection of both soft drinks and alcoholic drinks. The service is always great and the kitchen and waiting staff always have yoir food out to you in very reasonable timing. I would always recommend this restaurant to family and friends who are in Dumfries or are popping by Dumfries. I have also had take aways and deliveries from this restaurant and the quality of the food is still the same when it is transported and ate outwith the restaurant as it is in the restaurant.

Food is very good, staff are friendly and helpful when asked any questions.

The food is always lovely when I visit here, staff friendly and knowledgeable when quizzed about dietary requirements. Great atmosphere, fast service and everyone has amazing customer service skills.

By far one of my favourite places to eat, food is always absolutely beautiful, your are always greeted with a friendly smile and conversation, the service is great, lovely place to bring the family for a real treat.

AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!!! The worst customer service I have ever experienced.

Visited last night, food and service was exceptional as always. Staff are always friendly and helpful and the portions are huge, still haven’t managed to fit in a dessert yet. Our whole family love coming here and we will be back again soon.

Service was absolutely shocking!! Never been treat the way I did when visiting for some dinner. To start with the waitress covered heed to toe in tattoo's shouldnt even be working there. No greeting apon arriving, apruptly making me repeat myself multiple times when I was speaking clearly. 2 waitress's stood and stared at our table the full time while waiting for food and also while eating. Not friendly at all. Mentioned this while waiting to pay our bill and machine gun kelly overheard. Joking and laughing on the way out and when confronted about it she still continued. Who ever runs this place needs to have a good hard look at who you are employing. Wont be back thats for sure!!!

Was up from Glasgow for a couple of nights at a lodge with my mates and we decided to come here . My god did we make a mistake , as soon as we came in the cottage cheese heeded waitress came over to take our order and you could tell she just couldn’t be bothered and was ignorant as hell . The food was of the same level of a Philippine food market, a widny feed it to a cockroach .The atmosphere was that of a Jew hideout in 1939 and all the waitresses stood around like they were waiting oan a jump in. They stared at us as if we were aw sitting way our plums oot and asked us to repeat ourselves like we were talking Chinese . Avoid this place at all costs only time I would go back in there would be to do a squirty poo on the floor. The smell was another issue , it resembled a chipotle mayo infused chug Worst place ever .

Me and 6 friends where visiting from Glasgow and decided to come in here for a meal spend a fair amount of money in the place for the waiters to stair at us and make us feel extremely uncomfortable every time we turned our heads there was 3/4 waiters staring at us and laughing. when we brought this up to the manager they where nervously laughing her words “ wit you on about “ extremely unprofessional and would not recommend this place service is appalling and the waiters are very very rude. The waiter in particular with alot of tattoos came up go out table to take drinks i asked for a Fanta and she says “ pint or half “ very blutley, save your money and go somewhere else.

Good food good service reasonably priced friendly and efficient staff

Just been here this evening and the food was absolutely fantastic, we had starters, a main meal and desert with drinks and the price was as good as the meals. I had bbq ribs and wings for starters and the best ribs I have had for a long time, I had the liberty burger which was stacked and tasty and to finish it off with pecan pie with ice cream. Honestly, it's not a big fancy place, but we keep going back because the food is so so good and the staff are down to earth, really friendly and polite and can't do enough for you *5 stars*

For the second time in a row, ordered sweet potato fries and was given ordinary fries... shame the service can't be better. Last night the order was placed by my mother who was having dinner there. And tonight I came in to order for takeaway. Its a shame because the burger was good, I just don't like normal potatoes.

Love the food in this place, hitching post platter is in my eyes the best thing on the menu absolutely beautiful, great menu lost to choose from, its the only American diner in Dumfries, highly recommended, nice friendly staff and not to expensive, kids love it 2

Lovely place to eat. Good selection to choose from. Enjoyed the New Yorker Chicken, was one of the best ones I have had. The bacon was lovely and lean, the Lockerbie Cheese was so tasty and accompanied it nicely. The dish was served with creamy coleslaw, salad and chips. For dessert I had the Strawberry Sundae which was simply amazing. Would highly recommend both these dishes. I will definitely return and have already recommended this place to my family and friends.

Staff are very professional and can't do enough, food is top notch and beautifully presented. Will return when I'm back in Dunfries.

Went for my birthday meal with my wife and wasn’t disappointed had the Ribs and wings which the meat just fell off the bone, wife had sesame chicken and I had mars bar and Nutella Eton mess. I will definitely be back and will recommend to family and friends. Food amazing and very friendly and helpful staff. Top marks.

Great place for families and large tables. Huge portions. We had two sharing platters between eight. Makes it a reasonable price too

We had a big group and the place was fully booked with many Christmas’s functions held simultaneously. They seemed slightly understaffed but those in attendance were friendly. I can’t help to think they missed out on many opportunities to sell more drinks as the food delivery took priority. Nice decor in the place, simple but it worked to replicate an American feel. Food was ok, portions very good and fairly tasty. Menu was focus on the Xmas season. Would have liked to add an additional half star 🌟 3.5 stars as the place is worth more than 3 stars ⭐️⭐️⭐️.

Brilliant food but the staff make it even better

Food and service were excellent for our early evening meal. The staff were friendly and efficient and although it was quite busy we were looked after. The food was hot and tasty.

1st time we had been and will definitely be back The staff was so friendly and attentive from the minute we arrived until we left .The food was delicious ,we were a table of 4 and everyone of us enjoyed what we had .The choice on the menus as well is very good .

Then we ordered 6 main courses which we all enjoyed,on hined sight getting a shared platter or a starter is to much as the portion sizes are American size. Iam a big guy and I struggled finishing my mixed grill.

The food was really great, the service that we received was terrible. I noticed on other tables that there were plenty of dirty plates even though the customers had already paid and left. I asked various people 4 times for a bottle of tap water which they finally brought to the table. The staff were so slow at clearing our table, we were waiting a good 10-15 minutes with dirty Main plates before they were finally cleared. The staff made an error taking a dessert order, we explained it numerous times that it was a chocolate fudge sundae and they brought a chocolate fudge cake.

My wife and I dined here in whilst passing through Dumfries. We called in advance to book and managed to get a table without any difficulty. On arrival we initially drove past the turning for the car park as it’s not well sign posted down the side of the building. However, once in the car park we parked up without any trouble getting a space. The staff were pleasant and friendly. The restaurant is American style with decor to give it an authentic feel. The menu is extensive with plenty to choose from. The young male waiter gave us some recommendations to eat. For starters my wife had the corn dogs and I had the nachos with added pulled pork. This was my wife’s first time trying corn dogs. Unfortunately they weren’t as good and what she was expecting, however, this was on fault of the chef, that was just her personal option on corn dogs after realising what they were. The nachos were very tasty! They held their crisp despite the pulled pork sauce. The cheese was flavoursome and the pulled pork was very tasty. The nachos came with three different side sauces, salsa, guacamole and sour cream (which was my least favourite). We were both surprised at how big the portions were for just being appetisers (although is it American style so shouldn’t be too shocked!) For mains my wife had the sesame chicken which was a recommendation from the young waiter and I had the chicken wings (Cajun spice) & ribs. The sesame chicken was nothing special, a very basic dish. This might have been how the meal was meant to be which is fine. My wife didn’t think it was worthy of saying anything about as it still tasted fine and ate it all. The chips were skin on which were nice and well cooked. Unfortunately when we asked for sauce and salt they came in individual sachets which were disappointing. This is something I’d expect from a take away place, not when dining in. I quite enjoyed my main, the meat definitely fell off the bone as advertised for the ribs. The meat with the sauce was very nice, albeit messy. The chicken wings on the other hand were disappointing, some of the bones were brittle. The wings themselves tasted not bad but I’ve had far better wings before. Both dishes came with slaw which tasted good. The salad came with salad dressing and looked and tasted fresh. For dessert my wife had the mars and Nutella Eton mess and I had the pecan pie. The mars and Nutella sundae was the highlight of the dishes for my wife. There was a good mix of mars, thick cream and chocolate sauce in the Eton mess which was very tasty! The pecan pie was surprisingly small and lacked texture. The pastry didn’t have any bite to it and the filling was ok, very average. It came with a side of ice cream which was nice. Overall, we fairly enjoyed our meal but it was nothing particularly special. The price was reasonable considering portion sizes.

From the moment we got to the restaurant the team were friendly couldn’t do nothing we fully recommend the hitching post. We have been to a few restaurants around Dumfries this is one of my favourites. Your doing a great job at the restaurant keep up the good work we all appreciate it.

We have visited here a few times now and every time, the food and service has been absolutely superb. Most recently we came as a group of 9. There was a slight wait on food this time, I assume as it was a busy Saturday evening and we were a larger group, but it was absolutely worth waiting for. The staff are so friendly and welcoming, and very tolerant of our (somewhat rowdy) little ones. The portion sizes are large, food is so tasty, enormous menu with lots of choice. We have recommended this place to lots of people and were pleased to visit this time with friends, who also thought it was excellent.

Food was good , instructions for certain items not followed as asked for no slaw or salad but was in box, asked for side door delivery as as was holiday accommodation but driver went to owners door

Went once before thought I'd give another chance as reviews were good but really disappointed food very bland and not very warm young lad who served seriously has quite an attitude sorry but been twice now and won't be back and won't recommend

Absolutely superb meal tonight at The Hitching Post. We visit the area or 4 times a year and decided to try somewhere new for food - so glad we did! The food was delicious, and portions were great. Excellent menu choice. Service was a little slow but we had arrived without a reservation and it was a busy Saturday evening - so we fully expected this and were grateful they could fit us in! The staff were all very lovely and attentive. We will definitely return, and will 100% recommend this place to all of our family and friends who visit D&G.

Visited for the first time with the partner and we loved it. We each had a burger and can say it was one the best I've had in ages. Comes with fries and salad etc. Reasonable price too. Washed down with a couple of pints of nice fresh lager. We sat outside which was nice as it was a lovely night for it. Our server was very pleasant and attentive can't fault that. Will definitely be back to try out more of the menu. Recommended.

Very rarely do i leave a review but I feel the Hitching Post definitely deserves one. Fantastic, friendly staff who are warm and welcoming. Lovely ambience and music with fantastic food, cooked brilliantly with a great menu to choose from. 10/10.

Visited with my daughter at her recommendation and was not disappointed. The food was delicious and the service friendly and professional. My partner is coeliac and it was good to see so many gluten free choices on the menu, so much so that I have booked a table for his birthday meal. Looking forward to a return trip.

The food was good, staff friendly & helpful and the music I believe to be American Country. There is a car park at the back. Nachos sharing meal was a good starter and filling on its own. Doubling up a double burger and adding bacon creates a very large meal. The Tacos wrap meal had a good taste. Music could be a bit loud for conversation for some.

Visited this restaurant due to the gluten free offerings available. It was so nice to be able to visit a restaurant where almost all of the options on the menu were adaptable to be gf, and not just the usual pizza/pasta options. I’ve also never seen so many gf starters and deserts on a menu. Daughter is coeliac and everything she had was delicious. The portion sizes were absolutely huge and everything we all had was fresh and tasty. Service was excellent. Relaxed atmosphere with children. Would highly recommend.

First time trying this place ordered on behalf of my partner he absolutely loved it the size of the burger was massive proper grub i tried a couple of his chips and they were lovely he said he will definitely be back garlic dip was lovely and he had fudge sundae it looked so nice he loved it he was stuffed so nice to have a place that has really good quality meals wish we tried it sooner .

Excellent service, great food huge portions.

Sunday afternoon lunch, arrived and got a table no bother. Staff were very good, didn’t have to wait long for anything, never felt rushed. Ordered ribs and chicken, no complaints. The mrs had Philly cheese steak and it wasn’t really a Philly cheese steak sandwich...

Been to this hidden gem on numerous occasions and it has always been superb food coupled with friendly service. very good quality American styled food and the ribs are certainly as advertised being fall of the bone. I couldn't recommend this establishment higher.

Had a fantastic lunch for five adults and two kids at The Hitching Post. The food choices were amazing including varied vegetarian options ( a big change from the usual mushroom stroganoff or vegetable tart!). The food was freshly prepared and the portions were huge. All the staff were welcoming and friendly. A lovely birthday lunch 😁

It was crap my Cajun chicken was super duper spicy is said mild on the menu omg I would defo not be back my family enjoyed themselfd when I was sitting hating my life and my mouth was burning I went through lids of water...

Brilliant food, I had a catch up with a friend I hadn't seen for ages. Staff are all friendly and the food was amazing. I loved how easy it is to book online especially when booking on the day which saved me waiting until opening...

Decided to try out their 2 courses for £12 deal which is excellent value. We had Lone Star Chicken and Beef Fajitas for mains followed by Pecan Pie and Mars and Nutella Eton Mess for dessert. All very tasty.

Nice welcome on entry, shown to our table by our very pleasant server. This was our first time trying here, and we are pretty local, so thought we would book it for my mother in law’s birthday dinner. The food was fantastic and reasonably priced....

An amazing find during a short stay in Dumfries for hubby's birthday. I had a veggie hot dog absolutely loaded with toppings and chips, he had a surf and turf burger which he really enjoyed. I let slip to the waitress that we were there for his birthday while ordering dessert and she came out with a huge slab of chocolate cake with a candle in, bless! Pretty reasonable prices for the huge portions. The staff were friendly and attentive and the premises very clean.

Absolute must was there tonight for the first time. Best meal iv had in this town for a long time especially for the price range.

Found this place while working in the area, and what a find it is. If you like great food, clean surroundings bright and cheery. This is the place. After 3 weeks of not knowing about this place, and struggled to find somewhere decent to eat. It hasn’t disappointed me. 👏👏

Great place for a family meal; plentiful and freshly prepared food from the American inspired menu at sensible prices. Two minutes drive from the Premier Inn and 10 times better food. Will definitely be back! Not often I post reviews, but this place deserves to be successful. (Two adults and two 6yos)
