Went for a bithday meal for my daughter ,ordered 4 meals 2 of which were steak pie, both of these pies were inedible the pastry was too hard to get a knife through. We complained to the waitress who brought another pie, this was as bad as the first two the waitress never came back to the table to see if everything was ok or to offer a refund, only if we wanted more drinks before she brought the extra pie. The meal wasn;t charged for initallt despite ordering 4 so i had to wait 20 minutes for mine while everyone had theirs.

Try ask the price for your beer beforehand you may get a shock when you get it. They never display a price list. Although the food was good.

Visited with a friend and was excited to try the Wellington with veg and new potatoes 😋 Unfortunately it wasn’t as nice as I was hoping and tasted soggy. The veg and potatoes were ok but the gravy wasn’t very nice. Either the gravy or the pie (or potatoes) had something that wasn’t very palatable as my lips felt greasy whilst eating it. Something you don’t usually get with vegan food. I had heard the food had gone downhill but I was still willing to give them the benefit of the doubt. Sadly it seems it is true. Hope things improve again in the future as I do really like this pub!

Unplanned Sunday lunch absolutely brilliant well cooked, cracking service great value best carvery we’ve had in ages hats off to you all.

We arranged to meet friends here today for lunch and a catch up before Christmas. Our friends pre booked the table for midday and whilst we were there saw lots of people coming and going. We were shown to our table and told we were to order food and drinks at the bar. Menus were left on the table to choose from . We ordered the Grimsby Fish and chips with mushy peas (very large fish), lasagne garlic bread and salad, gammon chips egg onion rings and beef pie with chips and vegetables. All 5 meals were large helpings. Christmas menu had to be pre ordered.

Staff were quite rude and abrupt. The goulash was nothing like a goulash and was served luke warm. The coffee was very weak and was more like hot watery milk.

Food lovely. Service good. Selection of food is really good. Staff friendly. Local to me so go there often with family and friends.

Ordered the burger but it was overcooked, but to compensate they offered a free desert. My friends ordered pie and veg and loved it. Lovely quiet atmosphere during the week.

Booked Sunday lunch even though they told us they were not doing a carvery now , we have been for the carvery many time and found the food to be very good standard but now they plate your dinner up under the heat lamps then you watch and wait until someone is free to bring your dinner to you . I watched 3 plates stay under the lamps for over 3/4 min before the6 were taken to the table. When our meal came it was just warm the beef was tough with no taste how can the food change so much in a few weeks ?

We haven’t been here for around a year owing to a poor experience as a family. After a long horrible day we decided on a treat, it wasn’t. We would have had the steak pie but not on the menu despite it only being 5.30pm. No curry either, so I had roast turkey dinner. None of the food was very hot apart from potatoes I think they’d been done in the fryer not my preferred method. Parsnips I had were the frozen type and one was so thick I couldn’t cut it. My husbands meal was cold fried egg, chips and of course the ham which was meant to be. We had waited ages for it was very tired from our day so couldn’t be bothered with the hassle of complaining. It wasn’t a treat at all and we will not return. Which is a shame as it’s local to us.

We had a great experience here at the weekend. Really great and cold beer, menu was much better than expected. My wife loved the vegan option here so overall very impressed. We’ll be back!

We very visited Malt Shovel yesterday for a family meal for the first time in many years. I used to take my father many years ago when he was alive. We were greeted at the door by a lovely young lady, who shows us to a table as we had not reserved a table. We ordered 4 meals & I can honestly say we were not disappointed with all our meals. We ordered Choice Curry, Toad in the hole chefs special, Grimsby Haddock & Trio os Lincolnshire Sausage( well done). Our daughter who is a picky eater was the first to finish her meal. She usually leaves something, not this time her plate was clean. We will definitely be returning again. It was the best meal we have had in the whole of Scunthorpe. Great atmosphere in the pub, friendly staff. Highly recommend this pub.

Me and my partner have just been for a meal at the malt shovel. Oh my goodness!!! It was so so so good. I would recommend to everyone.portion sizes = amazing (I couldn’t finish the crumble). Quality of food = amazing. Just a really great experience with fantastic food!

Called today and was extremely happy with our meal. One turkey, ham and leek pie, one steak pie, both served with mash and fresh veg and plenty of gravy. Would return

Wow I haven’t been here for a long time and we as a family went for my mum’s birthday meal on the 6/1/23 and wow it was amazing the food was delicious the staff were amazing to Katie and Lewis was so amazing with everything that we asked them x

Food very average since reopening.One manageress is very rude and obnoxious, power has clearly gotten to her head and she is more bothered about looking bossy then providing good customer service and atmosphere.We all appreciate there is a pandemic on but there is no need to be rude about it. There is such thing as saying please and talking to customers rather than marching about shouting commands.Even other staff, doorman and clearly other customers felt the same way.

Terrible service. Very very slow. Chicken curry! Thin watery sauce with chewy large bits of chicken dipped in it. Over cooked rice. Worst meal ever Will not be eating there again. Took 1.5 hrs spent having 2 course meal!

Very nice meal, tasty halloumi fries with nice chutney dip. And the Sunday dinner was lovely. Katie was an excellent waitress.

Unfortunately really gone down hill, powdered soup. Poor service when relatively quiet. Staff need to learn how to address their customers. Such a shame as use to be really good for food.

What on earth has happened? Poorly trained junior staff, no idea of beers on or soup of the day. Overly friendly senior staff who referred to us all constantly as ‘darling.’ Food now mediocre, home made soup still advertised on menu but serving powdered mix. We had to question it due to the odd consistency and the waitress had to speak to the chef. No offer of a replacement, we had to ask for the starter to be swapped for a dessert. Mains all fine but nothing special. Certainly wasn’t worth the wait. Over two hours for lunch, despite plenty of staff serving and the pub certainly wasn’t full. Such a shame, it used to be brilliant for a family meal.

Really gone downhill this place, used to love it here but a massive change in staff and a really rude manageress who constantly snaps at customers. Embarrassing really and such a shame for what used to be one of the best pubs in Scunthorpe

I went to the Malt Shovel on 04/06/21. One waitress in particular was very rude since we arrived. Firstly, the drinks order was wrong due to the waitress not writing all the drinks down and they was all flat. We then waited for the food and we was informed the chef wasn’t told by the waitress that we wanted the starter with our mains so there was a little while wait until the other food was ready. The food arrived cold, the pie looked to be frozen and was just reheated (in a fashion). Again, the waitress didn’t apologise. Eventually, she refused to serve us and gave the cash machine to her manager who said she doesn’t work well under pressure and ‘you just cant get the staff’.As we was leaving around 1:15pm, people was turned away at the door as the chef had had enough and wasn’t serving anymore food. I was later informed the same waitress was slagging me off to her friend in a local supermarket.Wouldn’t recommend for an after lockdown happy meal

Used to be good pre-lockdowns. We went last night and it was bloody awfull. If you order the Lamb Kleftiko you don't get the chips or salad with it. The steaks which we ordered were were inedible and two of us had to leave our dinners uneaten. The burger that our son ordered was so chewy that it was not enjoyable. When we told the staff of our dissapointment with our meals we were ignored. I wouldn't have served my steak to a dog it was that bad. The price you pay for this awfull meal post covid is now 300% higher than pre covid. We used to eat there every Thursday but will not be going back ever again.

Very rude manageress when I and another customer complained about the beer tasting funny!she seemed to imply that we were trying it on!but we pointed out that all we wanted was a decent pint as to what we paid for,too which the manageress eventually did with more rude comments! Absolutely no need to talk to customers in that manner!! Terrible!

As always lovely meal can’t fault it in here at all. Only one thing I would change and that is we need hot water in the toilets guys.

Nipped in for a bite to eat and drink with family, wasn’t expecting much to be honest, but food was lovely. Had one complaint and it was dealt with exceptionally, lovely waitress.Reasonable prices for food and drink. Quiet atmosphere, would have stayed longer if I could.

First visit for carvery & this exceeded other local carveries we have tried. Such good value- even the men were impressed with the generous helpings of meat. We will be regular Sunday customers x

We had the lunch time offer of main and dessert all 4 of us really enjoyed both courses and left with full bellys.

Good food ,good service and friendly staff plus good value , what more do you want ? Car parking two minutes away , two hours free Monday to Friday ( with a ticket) and free all day Saturday and Sunday.

Busy, good choice of well cooked food, sensible prices. Great for an 'everyday' night out. Best to book Friday to Sunday.

It’s been quite some time since we have visited the Malt Shovel but this was the chosen destination for an annual get-together. All meals had been pre-ordered and arrived at the same time. Must say I was very impressed with the food and the service. Had a great evening and will definitely be returning soon

6 of us turned up on a busy Sunday afternoon, the waitress found us a table within minutes. There was a great selection of vegan options and the carvery looked delicious. It was regularly topped up with fresh items. The three bean chilli was great and you can have half chips and half rice, which was great. The location is good and the decor is homely and warm. Lovely staff too.

Lovely homecooked food, in a nice country style pub. Plenty to choose from at the bar and nice and friendly staff. Can take larger parties also when booked in advance and always great service for this when food is pre-ordered. Excellent value too

Greeted by very friendly professional staff pre ordered the Christmas menu faultless piping hot meal beef and Turkey excellent chef you were first class good portions,very well presented and tasty we had three courses and all were tip top followed by entertainment at 21:30 lights dimmed though I was in a up market restaurant 'Veto' were a very good choice of band and a good night was had by all, I would strongly recommend this venue to all, with the new furbishment too very cosy and welcoming great night my only fear is if I don't book in advance I'm sure I wouldn't get a table so well done to the Malt Shavel you have is spot on will be returning very soon

Not the first time we’ve been in and it was good. Food is all home cooked and it was nice and fresh, will certainly be back. Had a couple of baguettes and chips and they were huuuuage! Great value for £8 each

Yes my wife and I go there regularly , new layout for the Sunday carvery very good selection of meats and plenty of veg. Good prices as well. As Arnie says ( we,ll back)

Gents toilets worse than discusting. Pee all over the floor and that’s on a quiet Sunday night. No baby changing facilities and apparently only one ladies working. Bar staff not interested in serving. Just talking to their friends in the bar whilst you stood waiting. Maybe alright during the day but avoid at all costs in the evening.

Called in about 7pm not having booked a table but found a table available despite it being fairly busy. Ordered food and drinks at the bar, we had about a 30 minute wait for the food which was fine as everything was freshly cooked. We had the fish pie from the specials board which was absolutely delicious and the light bite gammon which looked full size, couldn’t have eaten anymore anyway. The service was excellent, tables were cleared and cleaned as soon as they were vacated, we’ll definitely return.

Had the Bacon wrapped stuffed chicken with white wine and mushroom sauce from the chefs specials. Absolutely delicious highly recommended.

Just had a lovely meal at the malt shovel , excellent food and excellent service by lovely staff, my wife and I celebrated our 53rd wedding anniversary, we had a two course meal and we then had a complimentary sweet (jam role poly and Eton mess) plus awhisky for me and a brandy for the wife ,thanks to Michelle, Sue and the young man serving ,

I used to love this place but since my favourite couple left a few years ago it has never been the same, especially under the latest “management “ duo. We went for a family meal last Sunday and had to wait 45 minutes for it to be served. We all had Sunday lunch, the mash was cold and the lamb I had was very sparce. There are several other things I could moan about ranging from lazy and unprofessional staff to broken soap dispenser in the gents. (Been like it for 3 weeks). But what prompted me was what happened last night. It was 10.30, half an hour till closing, and one of the bar staff started putting all the empty chairs on the tables. There was only 5 of us in the place so that’s a lot of chairs. On questioning as to why they were doing it early the reply was to save time later. Come on Rupert sort things out please.

Went for a family meal Saturday night, although they was extremely busy, the food was amazing, and the bar staff couldn’t do enough for you, special mention to Lucy who sorted us a table out. Excellent band on too .

After going here for many years I'm afraid last night was our last! We ordered 4 steak pie meals. All pies were luke warm in the middle and the chips were not up to much.two of the deserts wasn't warm after asking for them to be warmed. The drinks we got tasted awful and had to be sent back and replaced with different ones. To top it off I had to wait till I got home to go to the toilet as the in the ladies, one had no seat and the other didn't lock. I would like to add that the lady who looked after us was lovely. I didn't complain to the manager but wish I did now.

New refurb really made a difference. Looks great, staff friendly, excellent spirits and draught beer/cider selection. Sampled a couple of Chef’s Specials, and can say with certainty that they’re among the best food you’ll eat this side of Leeds. Excellent pub with a talented kitchen outfit and chilled, welcoming atmosphere. Scunthorpe is very lucky to have it.

I’m afraid this pub has gone down hill even after a cheap refurbishment.

Food definitely not as good as used to be lasagna very runny pie very small heping and the chef behind counter very annoying shouting swearing calling someone a pervert very off putting wont be going back for a long time

Our first time visiting since the recent refurb. No huge changes to the layout or interior but attractive and bright redecoration. Always had good experiences here before.

We had a birthday celebration meal with 15 guests,everones food order was perfect and brought out on time,the staff were polite and efficient and made it a very happy and enjoyable evening

Party of at least 30 in the conservatory for Aunty Bett's 80th & the service & "back chat" was absolutely perfect. Food was delivered on time & was brilliant; although Zena was kept waiting for her curry! lol. A good time was had by all - a well deserved pat on the back guys; nothing was too much trouble. Keep up the good work.

Visited at tea time, meet up with a friend. Ordered from the early evening deal. Good price on first view, starter of pate and mushrooms ok, nothing special. Main meal very disappointing. In the past their steak pie has been there signature seller, definitely not the same pie being served now, my friend said highlight of the meal was the chips. Mine veg bake, veg?? Frozen peas, 2 whole new potatoes and a few carrots, not the veg bake previously served either. Cheesy sauce ok, lacked seasoning, garlic bread straight out of the supermarket. Side salad ok. Service friendly if not a little too personal. Was called darling by male server and sweetie and pet by female waitress. Overall won't be returning anytime soon.

Home cooked food , good choice of cask ales family friendly pub with a good menu selection my favourite was steak and ale pie

Food was superb absolutely love there cuts of stake and there stake pie is to die for not only that they have an amazing range of ciders must recommend the cherry and the rhubarb and custard Cider and the manager Jack was so lovely polite and helpful I will most definitely be visiting again so much so this will now be my new go to pub/restaurant.

Had the 5 Spice Sweet & Sour Pork Sizzler for lunch. Absolutely spot on. Really enjoyed it Washed down with a few Elland Blondes

On this visit I went with my family. The usual meals from the menu that was ordered was exactly what was exacted and good. But the specials some of us ordered were not as good. The Italian lamb I had tasted good but quite dry. The pulled pork burger my brother had wasnt very tasty. And the special of steak and kidney pie was a good pie but my father ordered extra mash but got extra chips. We mentioned this but was hungry so we had what we got. I must say that I don't like to write a slight displeasing review as I do like the place. The bar and serving staff was very nice though. And I would still go again.

Me and my family went in at 11:20am to meet other family members for a hot drink. We had my daughter (9 months), nephew (7) and niece (5) who are well behaved. At our disappointment we were told to leave because we had children and were not dining! Seems like they only want more money and because we was not dining was told to leave. I will not be coming to the restaurant again as I believe this rule is a STUPID rule. You've lost future trade

booked a table for 2 as part of our 25th wedding celebrations as this was where I proposed to my wife the meal was very poor chips tasted like they had been recooked and the mixed grill for its price was very poor and bland there is a difference between well done and charcoal all in all very poor and expensive for what it was would of got better value elsewhere

Tried for 2 days to book a table, no one answers the phone, emails or social media messenger. Will now look elsewhere

Tried to reserve a table for a family get together and was told we wasnt allowed to reserve tables, when we arrived all the tables were reserved in the whole pub!!!! Staff are rude and the manager very patronising, its as if they didnt want our custom!!! I will never set foot in the malt shovel again, there are far better pubs in the local area i suggest you go elsewhere!!

Not a ridiculous wait for a fresh food place, I'd rather wait and it be good than have it at my table in ten mins straight out of the microwave.

After booking and pre ordering due to the size of our party, every meal was delivered in reasonable time and of a good standard and excellent value for money. But the negative, why do smokers insist of puffing away in the doorway of pubs so you have to squeeze past and inhale there 2nd hand smoke?

Had a lovely meal Braized Beef in a Giant Yorkshire my wife had hunters chicken with Lincolnshire poacher. The band were Catch 23 played 70s, 80,s covers with their own twist

Veggie sausage and chips . Sausages nice and lovely chips plus some veggie gravy. Refreshing lime drunk. And good friendly service

I have previously left a review of the malt shovel that was not the best (this was based on the manager at the time) have been is since for my mums 60th (35 guests) and recently been in for another family meal, the food and the service was back to It’s usual standard, excellent food and value for money, thanks so much Rupert (the owner) for all your help :)

We thought we would take my elderly father out for a Xmas meal, contacted the Malt Shovel to enquire, we were told you needed to pre-book which we did 2 days in advance, detailing exactly what we required starter, mains and sweet. £18.95 each so expectations were high.

We had booked this Christmas meal weeks ago and handed in our menu choices and assured that we had a table in the middle so we could see the band. On arriving we were told they had no table for us! They had double booked. We could clearly see our table was given to a large booking of bikers. The manager was not available. I later found out that he had walked out! Instead a very young lad was put in charge and he clearly out of his depth. One of our guests had travelled all the way from Birmingham for this annual get together. This deputy did not take charge of the situation. It was left for us to move a small table and add to an even smaller table in the corner. We also had to lift a heavy chair. We asked for free drinks which we eventually got as they were not offered. Three people had starters. We were given xmas crackers. The tables were by no means dressed for a Christmas meal! After our starters we moved to another table as we were in the corner where the band wanted to be. We had to move all our drinks etc. This table was lacking in space and messy. We had to chase up our main meals and it was extremely difficult to eat our meals without getting gravy on our lap. To make matters worse there was a ‘stranger’ still sitting at this table who didn’t move until we got our meals! It was one disaster after another. In the ladies toilet, there was only one toilet working. The other was out of order due to the toilet seat being on the floor! I cannot believe that they had not sorted this out in advance of the large stream of visitors that they knew were coming. Also why has this pub never got any hot water on the ladies toilet? It never has in all the years I have been coming. I have eaten here many times and have had some great meals but I will not be returning. Our night was ruined and it was very very embarrassing and upsetting. No way to treat loyal customers.

Nice and friendly staff always welcoming, great food, reasonably priced would recommend :) They also have a board with specials of the day on so there’s always different things everyday..

Visited The Malt Shovel for the first time Sunday lunch for family celebration.Cosy atmosphere with very friendly and helpful welcoming staff. Food was delicious especially the roast beef that was so tender as were the great selection of vegetables. Oh and not forgetting the mouthwatering puddings that went down a treat. We could"nt fault the quick efficient service and will definately be returning to sample more of the menu. Highly recommended!!!

The malt shovel has been a huge part of myself and my family’s lives over the last few years , this place is unique and one of a kind that delivers exceptional customer service , polite staff kitchen and bar that work extremely hard all year through ! and the food is fantastic ,especially there famous steak pies , from evening specials to the range of Malts and ales this surely is and always will be a great warm and welcoming place !

Visit Scunthorpe to see my family once a year... so had lunch today, Tuesday, so quiet... service was painful... food was average. One Scampi and one lasagna... chips were cold and the side salad that came with the lasagna was a poor excuse... such potential but they seem not to be botherd. Anyway there we go...

Food was amazing as usual ,all home cooked piping hot and fresh ,several had the home made steak pie special,full of meat,I had the special veggie bake and I requested chips which they obliged me with,it was lovely ,I was too full for a dessert but several had them , trifle was huge and everyone said it was lovely , all meals are good value but the specials are exceptional.would recommend to everyone,lovely atmosphere ,and bar staff very friendly new girl Brooke was lovely and helpful

Visited on a Sunday afternoon, upon arrival we was informed that there was no Sunday dinners left but that’s wasn’t a problem as there was plenty of other options on the menu. The first meal was taken to another table where vinegar was put all over the meal. The waitress realised she had taken it to the wrong table, took it off the other guest and gave it to my partner.. covered in vinegar with no opportunity to get a fresh fish and chips. Apart from that the meal was very enjoyable and all fresh, hot food.

This pub has been highly recommended to me by several people. I finally visited yesterday for the first time and was very impressed by the selection of real ale available at the bar. I then ordered a steak pie which was fantastic. The pub is very much like you would expect to find in a village once inside rather than a chain style town pub. Will definitely be back.

Excellent choice of beers and spirits. Excellent value food. Frequent live music performance. A justifiably popular inn.

Been loads off time food good had the special forgot to order my dessert and got told had to pay more for it as I didn’t order it with my meal thought it was bad I came in Sunday with my mum and come in a few times a month won’t be in again staff were apologetic as it’s do to the manager

We have been coming here for many years and we really enjoy not just the food but the amazing staff such friendly people who make yoi feel at home. The food is good to the point we pretty much come here 2 times every week and we still love it!

One meal had to go back , two weren't brilliant but had waited for ages and was hungry , only one meal was classed as good .Didn't serve 125ml glasses of wine , which they should . Won't be returning .

We have been visit The Malt Shovel every week for nearly a year now but sadly thete has been a real deterioration in service in recent months. Twice over the last two weeks our order has been wrong apparently due to the chef misreading the request and twice my salad has been full of dirt. To top it off my experience of the bar staff has also been negative. Standing at the bar for at least 10 minutes whilst other people are served around you after being the next in the queue is extremely frustrating but then when you mention it getting a load of chelp back from a snotty barmaid is not what you expect. The all day drinkers sat to the right of the bar are given priority over the not so regulars despite standing politely in line. When thete are half a dozen people at a bar it's not rocket science to deal with people in turn in my opinion. Or at least apologise for delays in service... this coupled with poor quality meals sadly means for us that we will now be giving this place a wide birth until it's back on track again. Last week after our bad experience we also overheard the 3 people also complaining that they couldn't eat their food so it's certainly not an isolated incident for us..

We have just returned from a family meal to the malt shovel, the chips on the meals were terrible and the mince in my lasagne was the size of meat balls so I addressed this with the waiter, he said he would pass this onto the manager, we finished our meals and the manager had still not Had the decency to come and speak to us ! So I approached him, he said that he did not know we had a problem and then went on to explain that the chips were made from new potatoes and that they had experienced a problem over the last 3 weeks with people complaining, but then went on to tell me that 30 other people in the restaurant did not have a problem ! So he clearly was aware of our complaint. I expressed my dissatisfaction but he blatantly was not interested, when I said I would be leaving a review his response was be my guest and when I said we would not be back he said it was no great loss. Over the years we have been here numerous times and always had a good meal, but NEVER AGAIN.

Busy pub in Ashby selection of good Real Ales. Varied food menu and good Chef Specials.. Big let down is the Sunday Lunch they use Brisket of beef instead of a better cut like Salmon or Sirloin, also they pile everything on the plate not leaving room to manouvere, every thing is just piled up on top of each other. Better to have tureens so you could help yourself. Most of the staff are brilliant and go out of their way to help you have a good time. If you encounter a problem they do their best to sort it out.

I love the range of ciders and my husband loves the real ale here. The food is really good too. Great steak pie and chips.

Not long got home from a brilliant evening at Malt Shovel.

Love coming for a drink here due to their selection of ciders. Would love to eat here but their vegan food offerings are virtually non existent (Chinese style vegetable curry which is pretty bland) if they catered for vegans I’d be back like a shot. For now I’ll have to stick to drinking here and then going for an Indian meal up the high street.

We have been going here for Sunday lunches and a year ago had a wonderful meal here of fish & chips and it was lovely ( better than Rick Steins at Falmouth) but today I had the fish & chips and it was awful the fish tasted like it had been brought in from a chip shop and reheated in the microwave the batter was actually burnt but soggy my wife chose the quiche and salad and it was the same as the cheap quiche in Asda nothing home made about it. I can honestly say it was the worst meal we have ever had. I wish I had said something at the time and taken photos but we didn’t

The manager is scruffy, rude and a tad too aggressive - a throw back to the 1970's. He has ruined two occasions we have had there recently and all have vowed not to return. Such a shame because this place used to be fantastic. Food was OK and other staff very good but the manager (and for those old enough to remember) is trying to imitate John Cleese but with more brawn and less wit. Many of my friends have stopped visiting and I'm afraid I will be joining that queue. Such a shame and time for Rupert to get a grip please!

We as a family have visited the malt shovel for years but very disappointed with new managers attitude, the staff are lovely & if the way he spoke to us are anything to go buy Im sure the staff will be dropping like flies. we visited In march and he was really rude let’s the place down, The staff are great come on malt shovel bring back someone with a nice welcoming persona! Really shocked at how management attitude have fallen at the malt shovel

Called in on the off chance wish I had looked on here first not for kids and as I look on here it’s not just me who thinks this even on my way out going into the toilet true I presume regulars swearing and aggressive to someone else I no that’s not the pubs fault who go’s in but doesn’t help I no some older pubs back in the day wasn’t for kids but we’re in 2018 and times move on

I have eaten here a few times, the last meal was terrible I had the pie, which was cold, when it come to paying I was over charged by two drinks

Currently sat waiting for dessert after my other half had just ordered the nicest curry either of us has ever had! It was a ‘Special’ and was called Chicken and Sweet Potato Massaman Curry. We loved it that much that we asked the waitress if the chef would give us the recipe (expecting a no) we were pleasantly surprised when the waitress came back with a piece of paper that the chef had written out the recipe out on! Will definitely be making this at home! Thanks for the great customer service! :)

We visited the Malt Shovel tonight with a group of friends for a birthday meal. Food was appalling. Sausages were over cooked as if they had been cooked several times over. The steak pie was very very salty and the crust was also old. The veg was soggy and tasteless. The fried fish was swimming in grease. The only thing saltier than the pie was the landlord attitude! The pub was very dark and dingy. The ladies toilet was absolutely filthy and very unhygienic. We will not visit ever again!

i regualry visit the malt shovel as it is a cosy warm pub with excellent food , i dont normally comment on things as its not my thing but over the past few weeks i have witnessed some very disturbing events. i was sat enjoying my dinner when a large party of people came in both adults and children and they went into the conservatory area in the pub . the party wasnt overly loud and the children were playing among themselves ,not being a nuissance at all one of the bar staff came over to the party said something particulary out of line then went back to her duties. after a while the landord waded in very arrogant then told the group to leave all becouse the children in the group were sat at a table that was reserved for 7 oclock !!! it was aproximatley 3.30 in the afternoon so what was the problem? obviously the part was angry as they had done nothing wrong and the children were very upset . there was no need for this at all! also when i have been at the bar getting drinks i heard the landlord ask for something for "the squealer in the corner! imagine my horror when i looked and there was a young disabled boy there! absolutley disgusted! other things i have noticed him saying in the pub with no regards to who is listening are that his bar staff are jelly fish because they have no brains ! and him shouting at kitchen staff threw the hole in the wall calling them stupid etc its such a shame because this place is normally a friendly place with great bar staff and wonderfull food if he is like this infront of customers god knows how he is with his staff behind closed doors i really feel sorry for them

Would not reccomend at all... can't comment on the food as we was given a refund before the meals arrived. Very rude staff and even worse landlord and landlady.

It is absolutely discussing would not advise anyone who wants to go for a family meal the staff are very rude as well as the manager we didn't even get our food we got a refund and went somewhere else would not advise anyone to go there spoilt our family meal we pre booked

Took the family for a meal today.it says child friendly. I beg to differ, when we got our meal it was barely warm and took over half an hour to get the food.when l complained to the manager (who was very scruffily dressed)he just shrugged his shoulders and walked off.i got the impression he only cares about the locals.

Always worth a visit so we nipped in one night for tea in between decorating at home.
