We enjoyed a lovely Sunday lunch at the cosy Red Lion after walking in the beautiful Peak District. We had a mixture of satisfying, well balanced dishes off their main menu and carvery. We found there was an impressive selection of vegan/ veggie options compared to other places, and really good quality meats cooked well. Lovely staff, friendly and relaxing atmosphere I especially liked the way they had space for dogs too. A great end to our day.

The service was very slow upon arrival, we waited a while to get a drink and menus, with no acknowledgment from staff. We ordered the Sunday calvery expecting to help ourselves (Like you would generally expect to do at a calvery), however, we were served the food from the staff direct from the calvery. Which i have never experienced before. We felt that this was a despirate attempt to save money, by means of portion control! Myself and my husband left feeling hungry still and what was even more shocking was that even though my husband did not want to eat a lot of the vegetables on offer, they didnt give any extra portions of other foods on the calvety which he actually liked! As a result after our meal we both felt very unsatisfied. It was very small portions and they seemed to be scared of giving you what is considered an 'average adult' amount. However, despite the carefully placed small portions the food was very tasty! I just wish the staff were a little more observant, welcoming and we could have actually have helped ourselves to the food on offer as we always have done at other calveries.

The veggie meal was good and the selection of meats was good; piping hot food for all including chicken goujons for the children so all in all a great venue to enjoy each others company

An old pub full of character, came here for the food as renting a holiday home 5 miles away, seemed like a different offering @ the red lion than the usual pub food on offer elsewhere. Wasn't disappointed on looking at the menu either, although it did seem a little small and brave. Thinking maybe a few not so restauranty dishes might go down better with the locals, but hey if I'm only visiting. It seemed strange that the designated restaurant area didn't have laid up tables and a wine list (considering the aspirations of the menu.) Just cutlery in a holder on the table with ketchup and mayonnaise in bottles, seemed a little off kilter with the menus. Starters of peach burrata and octopus carpaccio were good but not great . Mains of sea trout with ravioli and pork were not so great, fine in parts, but at the price they are charging , needed to be better, although the chef can cook and has talent it just needs to be more focused and a more cohesive idea of the restaurant as a whole.

We went to the Red Lion in Birchover while visiting a friend who lives in the area. We thought we would give the Red Lion a try. I’m glad we did! We will definitely be back. The food was excellent. The chef is from Scilly & he certainly knows about food. There was a main menu and specials board. The specials were more interesting than the sort of thing usually on offer. We started with bread (home made) with a hot blue cheese dip. We were mopping every last tiny bit out of the pot it came in. They make their own blue cheese. Then 2 of us had beef taglata. Tender & delicious. The chips that came with it were light and fluffy. We all cleared our plates. The pub itself is very ‘olde worlde’, not a modern pub but we were all quite comfortable. It was a very pleasant way to spend an evening. The wine was good too without being an extortionate price. If I had to choose between the 2 pubs in Birchover then I would definitely choose the Red Lion.

Been here a few times now, the Chef is extremely knowledgeable and this is evident in all the food. We particularly like the all the fish dishes, but all the food is at a different level above and beyond all other pubs. My son and I recently spent two week in the glorious Peak District and were fortunate enough to stay in Birchover. There are two public houses in the village but the Red Lion is by far the superior of the two. It is a lovely example of a village pub and exudes character. You will receive a very warm welcome from Matteo and Alyson and the staff whether you are a tourist or a local. Matteo brews his own beer on the premises and it is of an excellent quality, I would recommend the Robin Hood’s Stride a fresh clean 5% IPA with plenty of body and a robust hop flavour. The other brews on offer are equally as well made and there is the normal range of other beverages you would expect to find in a well run pub. The food is outstanding and reasonably priced, I just loved the Steak and Ale pie it was fantastic. We spent some of our most memorable times of the holiday in the pub talking and cracking jokes with the locals and staff and we both felt perfectly at home. I would like to thank everybody at the pub for making us feel so welcome. If you are in the Peak District and you get a chance get over to the Red Lion, great pub, great beer and great people.Barry and Sam

We ended up stumbling across this lovely pub after a long walk. We had a drink to have a little break which was served by lovely staff and then realising that we would need to either walk home or get a taxi. The staff kindly provided us with Taxi numbers but there were none available so we turned to have to get the bus. We decided to have a bite to eat whilst waiting for a bus to arrive and we all ordered what ended up being the best chip butty we have ever had. Whilst serving us the lovely grub we realised that because we were unprepared we didn't have masks to get on the bus. So once again the staff came to our rescue and gave us a mask so we could get on the bus home. All in all, one of the friendliest pubs I have been to in a long time. Nice food, cold drinks and a great outdoor seating area which had the sun beaming down. Thanks for helping us out

Highly recommend the Red Lion at Birchover. I rarely write reviews but was compelled to share our experience today. We stumbled upon this cosy pub around 6pm after a walk and found it warm and welcoming. Fire blazing, very covid safe, attentive staff, we planned on just having a pint but were tempted by the menu despite having already eaten and did not regret our choice to order a dessert each. That was the best sticky toffee pudding I have ever tasted (and I’ve tasted a good few!) It was so light and so good that I wished I had more room for more. My boyfriend enjoyed a delicious biscoff cheesecake. I could have happily eaten both all over again. We will be returning to sample the homemade main courses, as the food on neighbouring tables was getting high praise and looked as good quality as the desserts we enjoyed. Compliments to the chef. Reasonable prices for such good food. I can’t wait to book a return visit.

My husband and I went there last night for dinner. Great food with a clear italian touch from the chef/owner Matteo. Really nice and friendly staff, great home made beer selection. We highly recommend the blue cheese and pear bruschetta and the apple crumble!

Went to Red Lion this weekend. Two of our party had the carvery and stated that it was the best carvery meat they had ever had. Not a wide choice of vegetables but all fresh and good tasting. My wife remarked that it tasted home made. I had the Birchover Blue Cheese (award-winning and made by the owner) ciabatta and it was exquisite. Local beers are brewed on the premises.

We popped in for a meal as we were on holiday in the area - a big family with a dog. The tap room is dog friendly so we were able to eat here. Great service - extremely friendly and welcoming! The menu was varied to cater for different dietary needs and the children. Portions were generous! The food was really good and we all enjoyed our meals. We would certainly visit again if in the area - definitely worth a visit. Interesting to see the old well here too.

Parked on the main street early morning and went for a good arduous walk (for us at least), around the rocks and hills of Birchover 9full of local history), down passed the lovely Old Vicarage and over to Robin Hoods Stride, Dale End, Elton, Winster and return to Birchover, and decided to take a look at the Red Lion as I had heard it had a good reputation for dining and the fine ales made on-site. There were people outside and many inside drinking and dining. The service was very good and the staff very welcoming and helpful. Dogs we noticed are welcome too! The food was absolutely beautiful and thinking about it now - I wished we'd have had more, instead of thinking about our weight, considering we'd just done a hard walk for us. the home made Ministrone Soup was wonderful my wife said, (and still keeps on about it), and I have to say, my Ciabatta (containing black pudding, two eggs and bacon), with home made chips and salad was truly wonderful too. Well worth a visit and enjoy the beautiful surroundings also!!

Eight of us including 4 children (ages 3 to 7) dropped in for an evening meal on a Sunday night. We were staying at the campsite up the road and couldn't be bothered to spark up the BBQ. Friendly welcome, good food, good beer!

Good honest pub. Traditional feel. Great landlord. Hearty, honest food and good ales brewed on site. Not fancy or Michelin stars but just down to earth. Well worth a visit.

We had a delightful couple of evenings at the pub. We had one evening playing darts and having a couple of drinks. On the second night we had a meal, incl. a 7 month old and a coeliac. We were all very well catered for. We have never seen a pub do gluten free burgers with gluten free onion rings and chips. Superb! Thank you for your hospitality on our week away to Birchover!

Stopped here after walking the moors. Lovely location and interesting own beer selection. Food was pretty good - was too warm for carvery but roast salmon was good. Service a little slow but staff very friendly.

Lovely pub with a great selection of drinks. The strawberry and rhubarb is a must on a hot day! If you like your ale there is a good selection of brewed on site ales. Very friendly staff.

Visited here for Sunday dinner, it was a very good meal. Beef was so tender and falling apart and the pork was so tasty great selection of vegetables. Also had 1/2 vegetarian options and the lady let us order and wait for that dish to be servers etc before we went up so everything worked well. Home brewed ales are in offer and very tasty!

We visited the Red Lion on the bank holiday Monday afternoon, just for a drink. We decided that we would return that evening for a meal, especially as the other pub in the village appeared not to be open.

We are lucky enough to be staying in the village this weekend, however we didn’t fancy cooking so decided to try our “local”, what a great decision that was.

This is a real gem of a traditional Derbyshire pub. Cosy log burner and a really warm welcome on a cold February Sunday.

Arrived to be meet by friendly staff and a glass of bubbles. Shown to our table, first we were served with antipasto which is a feast of delights in its self consisting of cured meats, homemade meat pate, selection of sea food, char grilled veg, tempura battered veg, olives, breads, and a few more items I have missed. This was then followed by a pasta course, after this come the meat course consisting of a delicious selection of slow cooked meats venison, lamb, pigeon, and belly pork served with veg, after all this come the best panna cotta you will ever taste, followed by tea or coffee, when you have finished all this Matteo Alison and their fab staff then came around to each dinner with a little shot glass and a choice of a tipple of your choice from limoncello, a chocolate liquor of Alison's making, or white liquor which name I have forgot, or my favourite mirto. This is the best £30 you will spend a must to go and try, can't wait for the next one.

Friend and I called into The Red Lion on a Saturday lunch time, essentially to buy some bottles of Birchover beer. We had a drink and chatted with the lovely friendly young woman at the bar before buying 4 bottles each of their brew. Really old pub with loads of character and a friendly, hard working crew. Proper Derbyshire pub in a interesting and beautiful area.

Absolutely delicious and a real treat! The staff were inundated and very busy so we had to wait around 20 mins for our order but each dessert is made fresh and well worth it. We couldn’t understand
