Butterfly Cabinet in Newcastle upon Tyne

Visited this cafe as my wife used to go to it 20 years before at uni and so a nostalgic visit was had. I had the "ultimate" breakfast, my wife had "the USA" and my daughter had apple and cinnamon pancakes. Everything was delicious. You can see from the pictures the portion sizes would make a Yorkshireman blush! My only minor gripe would be it felt a tad on the expensive side for a breakfast and the door kept blowing open. Not major gripes at all as I would absolutely go back in a heartbeat. A breakfast here *will* fill you up for the day

Around 5 years since last visit and let's just say it's not worth another one. Got seated straight away, order taken without a wait. One of the drinks ordered wasn't available which was fine as just picked something else instead. Items on menu are marked for allergies, however would be nice to be asked if any allergies/intolerances when taking the order to ensure a stress free dining experience being a coeliac. Food was average and not very hot. No hollandaise sauce for benedict and the waitress offered another dish when bringing out the rest of the food. Obviously not going to do that when everyone else's food had arrived, not really ideal being told as its placed on the table. Place needs a deep clean. Seen better toilets in a nightclub, really damp/dirty and not well maintained. Shame as its a stunning old building...needs TLC.

Absolutely disgraceful the staff in this cafe make you feel so uncomfortable just standing watching you when you go in at the door and also for the price the food wasent much better won’t be returning

Infamous brunch spot. There’s always a wait. The beans and hash browns in the business breakfast were really good. The rest was standard fare. There’s a pretty large menu so lots of things to try.

Butterfly Cabinet is a fantastic place to go for food, their breakfasts are absolutely amazing though so I recommend visiting then! The place is incredibly popular (understandably), so expect to wait in a queue, but it is absolutely worth it, you will not regret visiting.

Staffing is a major issue. I struggled to get attention of staff who were constantly grazing and drinking behind counter. Its clear that its a great, fun place to work, but i felt like i was an outisider in their space, and i was interrupting the time they shared together as friends. For example i was finally able to ask gor vinegar, the staff member brought over a bottle, said its empty, i assumed she would look for another, but i didnt see her again. Staff were more interested in their social interactions, and im not sure how hygenic it is eating and then serving food without washing hands in bewteen. Food is good as always, but id like to go somewhere i feel part of the experience rather than an annoyance, or outsider.

The big breakfast is still great. Everything else is not worth the wait and price tag no more. Waited outside for 15 minutes and no one even came to check. Waited inside for around 10 minutes with no one even making eye contact. Waited for service at our table for around 10 minutes then Waited 20 minutes for drinks then food to arrive. Could have been a easy 5 stars if service didn't let them down

Food is good with a great selection of meat, vegi and vegan. There's a children's menu too. The staff are friendly and helpful. We sat at the back where there were plenty of space with kids Very popular so be prepared to queue as there's no booking allowed. They do NHS discount so bring your card!

My fiancé and I arrived just before 10 and had to queue, we didn't wait for too long thankfully as it was a really cold day 🥶 When we were seated we ordered the Business breakfast and Salmon & Eggs, a coconut mocha and a pumpkin latte with two orange juices. The food and drinks arrived promptly and were delicious! When we left there was a very lengthy queue! 😬 Good thing we arrived when we did!

This place just isn't the same as it used to be. My breakfast was luke warm when it came and veg sausage tasted under cooked. My some had a hair in it which was neither of ours and when I mentioned this all the response I got was I'm so sorry I will let the chef know that's £26 please. I can't see me returning

Basic food not sure why it is always so busy. The hot chocolate was lukewarm the restaurant was not busy when we went. Won't be going back in a hurry

Great prompt service. Food cooked perfectly- Salmon Omelette was delicious and really really filling! Peach tea nice and refreshing. Was able to just chill and relax without being pestered by staff...waitress both were lovely and attentive. Highly recommended 👌

The milkshake was very nice. The "Business" (large full English) was very tasty, but the menu said it came with white pudding but there was no white pudding. The smoothie was more like a water juice than a smoothie. The prices in the online menu are incorrect and need updating.

Best breakfasts in the northeast

Excellent eatery with queues often out the door. Vaste menu on massive laminates cover just about everything you could want. My fav is the USA breakfast. Highly recommend.

Moved table as seated near the door and people standing over us eating. There is always a crowd. Food is usually excellent but ordered the falafel burger. It tasted like no falafel I have had before. More like a spicy bean burger. The consistency was far too wet and contained green peas not chickpeas. Very disappointed.

Great food, awesome atmosphere, often very busy. We arrived at around 10:15 & managed to secure one of the last available tables, by the time we left (11:40ish) a queue had formed at the door.

Excellent food with a large selection, including vegetarian and vegan. They do a customisable all-day breakfast where you choose what to include, which is a good idea. Large portions, it is easy to over-do meals here. It is popular: there is often a queue but Butterfly Cabinet is larger than it looks and any queue moves quickly. Highly recommended, but go there hungry!

Went there on a Friday morning with my partner. We had to wait around 15 minutes in a queue outside as the place was full. Once we were invited in, we set at our table and ordered the food and drinks. My partner got the USA breakfast, with pancakes, hash browns, sausages and maple syrup, whereas I went for the halloumi breakfast, with spinach, fried eggs, baked beans and halloumi cheese. The food came promptly and it was nice. Overall a nice experience and would love to have a second visit in the future.

Food was average this time. Breakfast wrap not great. However the place needs a wet rag running around it !! The flies and dust on window sills is disgusting, cobwebs hanging from curtains was a bit off putting. Dirty seats and the bathroom is a bit ropey as well !!

An incredibly popular cafe on Heaton Road. Regularly you will see people queuing for a table. We visited with two friends. Service was very friendly and pretty rapid considering how busy it was kn a Monday morning. I would only give the food we had about 3 stars though. All four of us were a little disappointed with the quality for the price. The environment was nice though.

Would of been 5 stars as the food was lush but we were put in the little conservatory with no air con so was very hot and couldn't thoroughly enjoy the food

I usually have fantastic experiences with the Butterfly Cabinet both pre and during Covid, but sadly this one was notMyself and my brother ordered a veggie English and a regular English breakfast respectively and were asked to wait outside with the implication being it would be fairly quick service, this was not the case.Sadly the food took nearly 35-40 minutes of waiting outside for it to come out and, while the staff member was lovely and apologetic, it felt almost insincere as the food was stone cold some 2 minutes after leaving the shopAs I said at the start, I’ve never previously had issues with the butterfly cabinet and always love going to support a local business, but stone cold food after a 40 minute wait sadly missed the mark

This little gem is beautiful, I made my way up to Jesmond and passed the butterfly cabinet on my way and stopped off for breakfast. It did not dissapoint and the coffee was great quality.

Este lugar abre a las 9 am y se llena muy rápidamente. Si tiene que hacer cola, valdrá la pena esperar, pero el personal es muy eficiente, por lo que no debería tener que esperar demasiado. Los precios son razonables, pero aún mejores con "Eat Out To Help Out". Nuestra mesa estaba bien colocada para el distanciamiento social, pero noté un par de mesas que definitivamente no lo estaban, y esa es la única razón por la que le he dado un 4 en lugar de un 5.

The food portions here are worth the price as they are very big. They also have a lot of vegetarian and vegan options too! However the inside is quite small and regularly is very busy so be prepared to be waiting.

My wife and I visited Newcastle for a three day weekend with our daughter and each day we had brunch at the Butterfly Cabinet. Have been coming here since my daughter went to university in Newcastle. It never disappoints and this weekend was no exception. Yes there’s is a bit of queuing to get in but that is part of the character of the place but when you get in the food, the service and the wonderful quirkiness makes it worth it. We tried quite a few different options over the three days and all were superb. Oh and the value for money is great. Always worth a visit.

Cannot recommend Butterfly Cabinet enough. Although you may be waiting a while for a table due to its popularity, when you order your food you can see why you’ve been waiting. Portion sizes are very generous and tasty, even when it comes to drinks! Great place to go for a nice meal, especially with the all day breakfasts.

Just visited here for breakfast with my husband as it has been raved about by lots if people so thought we would give it a go. Upon arrival our order was taken my a very unenthusiastic gentleman I have received more welcoming greetings off strangers in the street. The cafe was pretty much empty on arrival just after 9am but quickly filled up and many people receiving their orders baring in mind we were sat right next to the counter I kept looking over at the man who took our order by 5 past 10 we thought we would ask were our order was being polite patient people that we are we thought an hour was definitely to long to wait when we asked the gentleman who took our order he looked puzzled then went away and came back very unapologetic and said he had lost our order. I mean come on this astablishment with such a great reputation and they loose an order and then to say we don't have to pay for our drinks as if I was going to pay anyway my husband and myself rarely get the chance to go out for breakfast due to work commitments and he had work so therefore had no time to go anywhere else. We certainly will not be returning you may serve great food but staff training is certainly needed in this place.

Went for a cheeky hangover breakfast with my pals and were not disappointed. I’ve never queued for a cafe before but it was worth the short wait! I ordered the USA breakfast and it was incredible. I would’ve given 5/5 but the service was a bit slow on the day we went. Would definitely recommend!

Couldn’t recommend this place enough. There’s not many times places live up to the hype but the butterfly cabinet really delivers. Nice staff, food was exceptional.

I've been here many times and its always decent grub at relatively inexpensive prices, they could easily put the prices up and nobody would really care. Service can sometimes be a bit out of sorts but the servers must be stressed out from the fact its always full and there is a queue out the door. They have a huge menu so I think just about anyone should be able to find something they like, I love their milkshakes and anything from the full English to pancakes.I don't think you can book and you will likely find a huge queue outside so wrap up warm if its cold. The queue tends to go down quickly though and you will soon be tucking in.Give it a chance even if you aren't hungover, though I don't think they need reviews to keep this place going, they have a captive customer base where they are!

It's been a good long while since I've been to Butterfly Cabinet, but with a lazy Saturday ahead of us we made our way other there.We arrived around lunchtime, and, although not unexpected, we were a bit dismayed to see a queue outside, particularly as it was windy and freezing. We joined the queue, and within minutes, the queue behind us stretched down the road.Despite being in a queue, we were inside and sat down within about 20 minutes, each person leaving the venue marvelled at the sight of the long queue outside.Handed large menus, we had already decided what we wanted when checking the menu online so we got our orders in quick. Even though it was busy, our food didn't take long to arrive, and we were stunned at the size of the portions.My better half ordered the USA breakfast which consisted of 3 large pancakes, a couple of bacon slices and sausages, with hash browns, and maple syrup to boot. I ordered the Thanksgiving sandwich which had roast chicken breast, bacon, sausages, stuffing, cranberry sauce and mayo whacked inside thick cut white bread. There was also a giant helping of coleslaw if you're into that sort of thing.The USA breakfast was so big that the missus struggled to finish, I too had problems fitting the sandwich in my mouth as it was THAT packed. I also had to leave behind real chips and tortilla chips, such was the monster size of the sandwich - I probably could have done with only half a sandwich and still be full and happy at the price.Throw in lattes and juices, and we left stuffed and just a shade over £20 lighter.Looking around, we could see other people struggling with the sheer amount of food that was dished up. Awesome.A fantastic return, and I'll be returning many times over in the future.

Used to come here a lot and although the food is still amazing the front of house staff seem very bored with their lives. No conversation anymore and its quite awkward to order food sometimes when they aren't looking at you just staring off into the distance. I love the food though and it'll always be a lovely little quiet spot that feels cosy - the USA breakfast is my favourite and they always do my bacon how I like it. Big fan and will be back.

We were recommended this place to come for breakfast, but as we arrived a bit late it was more of a brunch !It was obviously popular as we had to queue, but once inside and seated the service was friendly and efficient.The menu is extensive and everything is freshly cooked.Highly recommend it.

Not been in for a while. Mate treated me to the ‘Business’, the largest full english on the menu. We were hoggish for food. An excellent ensemble of breakfast items (although I’m still furious the imposter hash browns are included). Good coffee. Place was heaving as per.

Great atmosphere and location but our order was forgotten, which was a bit of a vibe kill. The staff don’t seem to take any notice of how long their tables are waiting or whose food comes in or doesn’t. 3 lots of people that came in after got served before us 1 hour 40 minutes for breakfast is just not worth it.

Out and about looking around big shops in the area and the Mrs said she was hungry, and after reading a article in the local newspaper a few days ago and being in the area thought straight away about this place

OMG didn't expect such an interior in the place. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful. The food is awesome so tasty and fresh. The coffee is amazing too! Very reasonably priced. Would definitely recommend. Great vegetarian selection too.

Mi pareja y yo hemos estado aquí varias veces para desayunar y nos gusta mucho. El menú tiene muchas opciones para elegir y el servicio es bueno, puede ser lento pero eso es perdonable ya que siempre están ocupados. Nunca nos ha decepcionado la comida que pedimos, las raciones son siempre generosas y la calidad de la comida es excelente. Definitivamente volveremos!

Tried this place out last week, went for the english breakfast and a side of pancakes with buttermilk. The breakfast was simply amazing, cooked to perfection and very tasty. The pancakes were equally spot on and the best pancakes ive ever had. Would definately recommend!

We decided to head for the Butterfly Cabinet for a breakfast treat and it was just that.

Visited the Butterfly Cabinet with my wife and daughter for breakfast on Sunday 22nd September. There was the usual queue outside to get in but the staff managed the wait well and we were seated quite quickly. The quality, speed and friendliness of the serving staff was excellent and only exceeded by the quality of the breakfast food which we all enjoyed - superb! We will be back again before too long!

What a great find! Turned up on a Monday morning after seeing it on Tripadvisor ,and was surprised to see it buzzing on a weekday. Only had to wait a few minutes for a table, and was presented with a full and varied menu of breakfast choices. Husband and son had the HUGE business breakfast, and I had the Full English, which was one of the best I’ve had in a long time. Excellent coffee too, and other meals going past also looked impressive, including eggs benedict and American pancakes. Cheerful staff and quirky little place...we’ll be back next time we are in Newcastle.

Before the place even opened there was a queue of around 30 people outside which is always a good sign. We were seated straight away, ALL staff were friendly, polite and attentive. Service was crazy fast and the food was beautiful! I had the halloumi breakfast + mushroom and the bf had USA breakfast. Portions sizes are very generous. 100% recommend and will be returning to try the lunch menu!

Me and my partner go numerous times and have always had a pleasant experience! Best breakfasts and burgers and such lovely and attentive staff! I love how quirky it is inside and always look forward to my next visit there! I'm forever recommending the butterfly cabinet to friends and family so definitely worth going! It's worth traveling for and always has customers (very popular) and I can see why! Love this place!!!

Visited on Friday with my husband and son after it was recommended to us. Really pleased we did as the food was lovely. Although there was a small queue outside it wasn't too long until we were seated. There is a wide choice of meals with plenty of vegetarian choices and we thought it was reasonably priced. We would definitely return if we lived nearby.

I hired out the Butterfly Cabinet for a dinner party last October for my 21st. It was the best night I could imagine and even though I am so late to review, friends and family still talk about how great it was. Simon was fabulous to keep in contact with and we discussed a menu that would be best. The food was insane, some claiming the brownie was the best they have ever eaten. Simon cooked absolutely amazing jambalaya and the whole thing was organised seamlessly. The staff were incredible and catered for everything. It was a night I will cherish forever thanks to the wonderful butterfly cabinet.

We were taken here by people who had previously eaten here. We had the cooked breakfast which was delicious. It took longer than they anticipated so we were told our two drinks each were on the house. The turkish delight hot chocolate is a must

Great menu selection, lots of breakfast choices. I'm coeliac and they didn't make the fact that I need safe gluten free food any hassle at all so I'll definitely be back. Service was fab.

Visited today for breakfast, found food to be overpriced for the quality, which was very average. Service was poor which was also disappointing as we had heard great things
