Dark Horse Mumbles in Swansea

pre cooked dried out food that's just warmed up and served, horrible lattes with the worst customer service, under staffed and the service was terrible, girl behind the counter was constantly on the phone took forever to make the coffees that tasted horrific, food was left on the side under the lamps for about 15 minutes while she stood there chatting away on the phone then walked outside to the point the chef had to bring food over, food was some of the worst we've had all shrivelled and dried out clearly pre cooked and just warmed up, will not be visiting again, paying nearly 30 pounds for 2 breakfasts and coffees I'm normally happy to pay for if it tastes good and the service is good but this was far from that, avoid at all costs this place is awful, never experienced such poor customer service and professionalism didn't even get an apology after complaining to the chef when food arrived, would give a zero rating if I could

I visited dark horse last night after a terrible meal out elsewhere where I was served raw food! So by time I reached dark horse I was starving and a bit deflated as I was celebrating a new job. The topic came up in conversation with Tegan who served us. Tegan, told the chef about my bad night who did something extra special and doubled up my burger with extra fries and a free Prosecco. I just wanted to say thank you as I was so down before and it really made my night! Also the food is great, been a few times in the last month and not been disappointed.

Was my first time here, the food was amazing, i ordered the mac & cheese and the portions were massive, i also had the bueno hot chocolate and to my surprise it was very tasty and had unique flavours. Tegan was my server and she made me feel extremely welcome, the service was fast, would recommend if you fancy a calm meal, good prices too!

Awful experience. Short staffed. The one front of house person served 2 tables who arrived after us. We waited 30 minutes and we’re not even asked if we wanted to put in our coffee order. We were a party of 8. We left. A great shame as we have eaten here many times and we’re very much looking forward to our brunch. Certainly the last time any of us will set foot in there.

Not impressed to see a dog sitting ON THE TABLE !!! This is an eating and drinking establishment ! Very unhygienic ! Staff member chatting away oblivious to a large dog sitting on the table ! Why ??? If you’re going to be dog “ friendly “ fine , but keep dogs on the floor !

Called in just for a coffee and after seeing meals being sent out I fancied something to eat all I wanted was a snack the ever so helpful Amanda suggested the the Serrano ham cheese toastie and I must say I highly recommend it after eating it the staff were very helpful especially Amanda you will not be disappointed

Booked a table for 7.30pm which we were shown too but noticed a smaller table in the corner so asked if we could swap,the very displeased member of staff begrudgingly agreed with an if you want attitude,took it upon myself to wipe the table myself as she clearly couldn't be bothered,ordered drinks with another much more pleasant member of staff who also took our food order that we then waited nearly an hour for,tapas was pretty basic but that wasn't the worst of it,I slipped as I was coming out of the toilet (which was a tad grubby) just by the kitchen door (in flat shoes I might add) which was quite clear to the less pleasant member of staff and the entire table she was serving who looked at me like I was s**t on their shoe without asking if I was OK,mentioned this to another member of staff who said they'd inform who ever needed informing but nothing else was said !!! Little side note about the aforementioned table of 'ladies' who had a yappy dog sat on the chair next to them - really don't think you should be allowing dogs on the furniture of where other customers are going to be eating,whilst you may be dog friendly it is not a home environment and shouldn't be treated as so.

Found the staff really nice and helpful with the dog too. Service was prompt and that was with only a small number of staff. Would definitely go back.

Excellent breakfast and we’ll looked after thank you

Lovely food and a diverse selection to choose from. We had the chefs special 'mushroom risotto' with a few nibbles and they were all delicious. The halloumi with avocado surprised us with the amount of flavour that was packed in. Only VERY minor 'negative' point is that the young man who was serving us was practically running the whole front of house alone. It wasn't exactly busy, he was lovely and understood the wait we endured was probably longer than expected and apologised accordingly for this. The wine glass my partner was served had lipstick/red substance all around the rim. This all would have probably been averted if he had sufficient help.

Some font of house staff are so indifferent to customers. Very slow to clean tables - absolute minimum done. Outside tables messy. Under tables dirty with rubbish. It's a pity as the food and atmosphere are great.

My partner and I went for a romantic date on a Saturday evening. Upon our arrival the bar was full and another couple were sitting at our table which seemed to be kicked out by the staff to make room for us. The staff seemed disorganised with the two waiting staff trying to do everything at once and failing to really do anything well. The bar had live music that was just starting up as we arrived and the singer could sing rather well. Unfortunately the volume of the speaker was so deafening to begin with that I could not hear my partner across the table. This was then eventually turned down to a manageable volume and proved and enjoyable background ambience. However after the singer sang four songs and took a short break she was approached by a staff member and asked to leave which obviously upset her. This was very odd given the small amount of time the singer had actually sung and resulted in her having to carry her equipment though the bar in the middle of service. We then ordered our tapas which took 50 minutes to arrive. I would describe the food as mediocre. Nothing to write home about but a solid 6 out of ten. The portion sizes were small and I would not order the cauliflower again as it was not the best. When we went to order our second round of tapas at 2100hrs we were told that the kitchen had closed and was no longer taking orders. Despite this others then ordered meals after we had been told the kitchen was closed. There was no prior warning of this closure and no explanation as to why others could order but we could not. Overall a strangely confusing experience that was really frustrating for us. I would not look to go again as I was disappointed by the visit.

Aaron the Head Chef was awesome. Came out and had a lovely chat. He was happy to accommodate us and seemed to seamlessly run the show. Nothing was too much bother... The other waitress staff were quite poor but he more than made up for their inadequecies

1st time visiting. 4 of us went for breakfast on Sunday. We arrived at 9.30 so we're the second table to sit. It was lovely inside,the atmosphere was relaxed . We all ordered coffees and a dark horse breakfast. The coffee and breakfast was spot on , big portions and strong coffee. The only gripe I have was the service but to be fair there was one girl and she was doing everything!! Taking orders,making drinks etc and serving the food. There must have been limited chefs also because the 2 things I wanted on the menu were unavailable . We were in there for an hour and half but again, the food was so good and the girl was lovely . I will defo be visiting again.

A lovely spot for dinner. We ordered multiple small plates to share, and were very happy with what we ordered! Family friendly, and the staff (I believe it was Ruby, in particular) was very helpful in letting us know about things to do in the area.

Before I start I have to confess, I am a fussy eater . The food was fresh and tasted amazing. I highly recommend the Fritto Misto di Mare (bucket of fish ) omg delightful.

Always have been a regular to the Dark Horse but I returned today after a holiday, I found that it was under new management…and it shows. We entered the Dark Horse sat down and waited for our server. It was not crowded with only 2 tables occupied. After what seemed a long time we ordered our usual food, a toastie and a burger, and after waiting 20 mins we noticed my wife’s toastie was placed on the counter ready to serve. It remained there for at least 5 minutes until my food was ready, and then it was all brought to the table. The toastie was best described as warm and burnt. We asked to have this replaced which was returned to us in no better condition. My Burger was very tasty but nowhere near what the original burgers quality I was used to. Added to this was a small price increase which made it more disappointing. May I suggest to the new owners that when staff are balancing the accounts, do not leave large amounts of money on the table in open view of all to see right next to customers. In my view the Dark Horse has taken a backward step but could so easily be remedied with a tiny bit attention to detail.

Went for some drinks with a few friends - spectacular! The bartender, Sam, mixed us some fabulous drinks 🍹 I was served by a young lady called seren who even helped us get a bus home afterwards. Staff 10/10, food 10/10, overall great time. It’s a beautiful spot, that’s incredibly welcoming and definitely worth the money spent. Would highly recommend!!!

Tegan was amazing brilliant service can’t fault her attentive service but not just to us but all customers she was a cretic to the owners, new chef but just as nice really enjoyed our evening and would recommend and definitely go again

Went for brunch and was served by two lovely ladies! Both were polite and welcoming. Food was beautiful and cooked to perfection, thanks to Zak and Cameron! Will be coming back again :)

The food is varied, healthy, delicious and a little out of the ordinary. I had the tapas, brocolli with manchego, almonds and lemon and the hummus which came with two different types and plenty of sourdough bread. The chips are crispy and the cakes are great values. Compliments to the chefs, Cameron and Zach! Also vegan-friendly.

We had such a nice breakfast here - really unusual selection, which we loved! I am only giving this a 4 star as the highchair provided was a bit grubby - perhaps just need a new chair all together.

I visited Dark Horse with 15 biker friends yesterday lunch time. We hadn't booked as we were exploring the area with no set plans. Despite the lack of notice the staff there made us all feel welcome, moved things around to fit us in, and we all had lunch. The food was excellent and staff all very friendly and positive.

Nice place, nice atmosphere and good staff. We had 6 tapas dishes. A couple were pretty good but the rest were a little underwhelming. I well go back to try other dishes and hope for a better result.

We had an excellent meal here. I believe there is a new chef who produces some fantastic food. Very much tapas style. All the dishes were delicious. The service is excellent too. One of my favourite places in Mumbles.

We went to Dark Horse last night and had a flawless experience. Really delicious tapas, amazing cocktails and excellent service from Rosie. We'll be back.

Lovely breakfast in a popular coffee shop in mumbles. It just keeps getting busier. The menu is varied with veg and vegan options. I had the beet and avo sour bread with sourdough & poached egg. My partner had the welsh breakfast which he said was lovely. If you like cockles and lava bread. Very friendly staff who were clearly rushed off their feet. It was mumbles market so perhaps busier than a usuall sat morning. Will return in a heart beat. Very nice.

Location is great, service was also good. Food however was just average. Ordered breakfast and it wasn't hot and just standard offering, nothing special.

Really poor service. Waiter just didn’t seem interested one bit. Coffee tasted not to bad in all fairness except it was cold after 5mins. Ordered the chicken burger from the lunch menu. The chips were great but the chicken was raw! When I told the guy at the bar he just shrugged his shoulders. Fair to say I’ll never be going back again.

Fair prices, everything is well seasoned. It was the first time I've had this kind of English/Welsh breakfast and it had certainly surprised me at how good it tasted. The staff were very friendly and easy to get along with, and the environment was relaxing, perfect place to have a coffee and work.

This is one of my favourite spots in Mumbles - stunning atmosphere and decor, great service, and a very homely feel inside. The staff are all excellent, and the chefs certainly know a thing or two about food! Highly recommended!

Nice atmosphere and lovely setting, was happy with the food overall, did find it bit on pricey side for the portion size of the tapas.. The macaroni cheese was completely dry. But would try again, think they could do tapas deal on5 and would be better value for what you get.

This is our 2nd visit to Dark Horse. We've been for breakfast and this time tried the dinner. The food is always really nice and same goes for this visit. The staff were also marvellous! My only gripe is that the menu on their website is different from the menu they currently have on. Like I said, the food was lovely, but we booked based on what we had seen, so when it wasn't there, we were a bit gutted! Still a lovely place!

Shocking service, waiter was rude and dismissive. Ordered a lemonade that was flat and tasteless as well as a vegetarian breakfast, which came out without halloumi. After waiting 10 minutes for the halloumi to come out separate it was too greasy and oily to eat. The whole time we were eating we could hear a chef in the kitchen whining and swearing away at the staff. Very disappointed.

The Dark Horse is a bit of a dark horse, it opened with a spectacular flourish during lockdown and seemed to be doing really well, there was always a queue outside. On entering it was really slickly designed and fitted instantly in to the Mumbles vibe, the food was fantastic, the service was always good, it was a 5 star establishment right from the word go. We went in the other day just for desserts, we’d already eaten mains somewhere else, it was empty! Not sure whether the new ownership had anything to do with it, no reason why it should. It was fine, the food was tasty, it’s still clean and just the same interior, but it felt…different somehow. Our waiter initially impressed but after the 3rd time of him cheerily checking ‘Everything alright guys?’ He began to grate a bit. He did it 2 more times after that, crazy. I can barely cope with 1 check but realise it’s restaurant etiquette, 5 times and we might judge them unfairly and not go back again, which is a bit stupid, we’ll probably just avoid him. So it still gets 4 stars for being in the right place and providing the right stuff, I just hope it doesn’t all go wrong and they slide away, it’s a nice place to have around.
