A business contact suggested visiting eh15 for a lunch meeting. It was new to me and I was delighted to accept. It is on the top floor of The Club at Edinburgh College in Milton Road. The view over Edinburgh and the East Lothian coast is impressive. So is the food, seasonal and freshly cooked and the service was slick. College catering and hospitality students practice their skills here.My beef stroganoff was beautifully cooked and the tomato and mozzarella worked superbly with it. So did the crisp green salad.I had no time for sweet but it looked superb. Do try this out.

We took 4 friends out for dinner - we were all really pleased and it felt like great fun. The food was presented very well indeed - nice looking plates, little edible flowers with desserts, etc. and it all sounded so good it was hard to choose. Where else would you get delicious little amuse bouche, seared scallops, Jerusalem artichoke soup, fantastic Zarzuela seafood stew, creme brulee, and petit fours - all for the price of 1 main course in another restaurant? The menu varies but there always seems to be interesting choices. Students friendly and trying their best. We'll be back!

Visited here today for lunch and was really pleased we made the journey over from Linlithgow. We had starters of tiger prawns and mains of pork escalope with one person having the veg curry. The meal, plus desserts, was really good in every way and, when we asked if we could give honest feedback Stephanie, the manager, came over to discuss our views. These were in no way overly critical but helpful, we hoped, and Stephanie took our comments on board with great courtesy. These students should be complimented as they are already achieving very high standards in their vocation, and I don't mind being a paying tester any time. We'll be back ......

Had an evening meal here a few years ago and was very impressed so when I saw a voucher for a swim and afternoon tea I jumped at the chance of spending 1 1/2 hours in the car to go. Swimming facilities were fine, though very small - i can't imagine how everyone fits in when the students are about. Expecting students to be providing the afternoon tea as a summer job however was a big mistake. There were just 2 regular staff on whose task was to assemble sandwiches and open the packets of cakes from the supermarket across the road. A mini strawbery tart was okay but the mass-produced mini muffin was highly processed and nasty, there wasn't even a scone, which to my mind is the essence of an afternoon tea, and none of this wasn't even made up for by quantity, being smaller portions than you'd get elsewhere. It's not what you expect from an afternoon tea, and is the most disappointing tea in the whole of Edinburgh. Don't let this put you off trying the student's own fayre however, just don't do the afternoon tea when the college is closed!

My friends and I were here for afternoon tea on Sunday and have to say after wanting to try EH15 for a while it was a bit of a letdown. The cakes appeared to be shop bought, the sandwiches were not explained so we didn't know what one of them were but what we did know was that there was certainly butter on them! Smeared on so thick you couldn't taste the fillings. First time I've ever been to afternoon tea when the scone comes with a filling already done with what we thought was apricot jam and cream. Served again with more butter. The staff however couldn't be nicer they were very attentive and friendly. The views from our seat were beautiful overlooking Arthur seat just a shame the weather wasn't nicer but then that's the Scottish summer for you.

Myself and 3 friends were here on Sunday for a sparkling afternoon tea, the place was lovely and the service was good. It was a pity the weather wasn't great as we would have loved to have sat outside on the terrace. Prosecco was nice, although the bottle we ordered had a date of 5/11/15 none of us including the waitress new if that was a sell by date but we drank it anyway and it tasted fine. The afternoon tea was brought out to us on a slate serving dish. No explanation of what was what, we weren't asked if we had any allergies or anything we didn't like. The sandwiches were definitely not fresh, had far too much butter on them and were disappointing. We had two mini scones each and 1 mini strawberry tart and 1 mini chocolate muffin each. That was it. The plan scones were already made up with an apricot jam a some cream but all you got for the fruit scone was some butter. The cakes and scones appeared to be bought rather than made. We all had high hopes for this place thinking the trainee chefs would make such an effort but clearly not. Did not see one person in the kitchen so I can only imagine all the food was pre-made even possibly the day before. Don't think we'll be back

The staff are friendly, efficient and could not possibly have been more helpful, every request was met with a speedy solution both the day before when we dropped off decorations and particularly throughout the event. It was beautifully set up on our arrival with warm welcomes from the staff. We had selected buffet menu which was delicious and all guests commented on it.The venue itself is lovely, wonderful views from the terrace looking out to the Forth on one side up to the Pentlands and ski slope. The decor is immaculate (toilets are spotlessly clean and tidy)If you are looking for a venue for a wedding or other party you could not do better than this. It is also very reasonably priced. Table for six including 3 mums. Superb starters and desserts. Disappointing mains for 4 who ordered roast beef. Dish was not roast beef but slow cooked pretty stringy skirt? When we complained were told that the wrong delivery from wholesale butchers had been accepted. When we asked why weren't we told when we placed order just received a shrug. When paying the bill tendered my loyalty card to be told change of management and no chance to redeem the balance(built up over several years) Pretty bad attitude for a favourite restaurant which has always been good in the past - we've been coming since the student service started and will come again when the students are running the establishment in the week but not for the commercial company at weekends.

We have been a number of times and had an overall excellent experience. We went for Valentines evening. Both ladies were excellent. The Spanish waitress couldn't do enough for us. However, the canapés were on rubbery bread and the rump steak was more like overlooked minute steak. There was supposed to be a pepper sauce with the steak but if there was I didn't get any. The starter and the sweet was pretty good.

We are regular visitors to EH15 and till now have never failed to be impressed with both the standard of food and the service. Last night we visited for the Valentines evening and were dismayed to find the food was so poor. The canapes appeared to be nesting on stale French bread, the main course steaks were so tough neither of us could eat (or chew!) more than a mouthful while the chips were overcooked to mahogany brown (where not charred black), the dessert appeared to be artificial whipped cream with some raspberries and a rather solid piece of lemon meringue pie. The front of house manager and the one waitress were charming, and I'm sure the kitchen staff (we saw two) were trying their best; the responsibility must lie with the management and their lack of support and supervision. We paid £25 each for one of the poorest meals we've ever had - perhaps small wonder that the place was at least half empty. We've always enjoyed our visits here in the past, and want to continue to support the students who have always impressed us with their enthusiasm and commitment. Hopefully, last night will prove to be an unfortunate one-off as not just the customers, but the students, too, deserve better.

I went here tonight with my partner for one of the Christmas dinners. We live around the corner from Edinburgh College and have gone past hundreds of times and thought it might be time to try it the restaurant, which was a brilliant idea. The waiter and waitress were both excellent and even though it was the waiters first day he did a very good job, very polite - perhaps a little shy, however as said just before it was his first day. The service was good and the food was absolutely excellent. I had a Scotch Broth for starters, Turkey as a main and a Brownie with ice cream as a desert, I have absolutely no complaints about any of the foods, they were cooked to perfection and the presentation of the food was superb. The turkey was one of the best turkey's I have had this year. You could tell a lot of effort went into the making and presenting of the food.Service itself was a little slow, for which everyone working there kept apologising, however it wasn't that slow - I have been in some "real" restaurants were service was a lot slower than here today. Plus all the food was worth the wait, so nothing really to worry about, keeping in mind it is a training place and they were doing a very good job for that. The restaurant itself was a little difficult to locate at first, we did not realise it was literally on top of the sports and spa complex. But the views were amazing, with views over the Pentlands, Arthurs Seat and Fife. All in all I am really impressed with the restaurant and would urge anyone considering going here to go, you will not be disappointed, even though it is run by students it just feels like a normal very nice restaurant.

This really is one of Edinburgh's secret treasures. On Wednesday and Thursday evenings, students, under close but supportive supervision, present a 'Masterchef Menu'. For what's charged, the quality and presentation of the food is quite outstanding, the enthusiasm and eagerness to please of the students is wholly refreshing, and the way Andrew, the supervisor engaged us, the diners, and encouraged his students to circulate and talk to the customers afterwards to seek our feedback, involved us all in an dining experience that was both warm and rewarding. Bravo to all involved.

Well I can honestly say I won't come back here again ! The place looked lovely when we went in, nice views etc. The waiter and waitress were friendly but, when our afternoon tea came they just left it on the table without saying what the sandwiches were ! There was egg, ham and mustard and something I did not recognise and had to ask. I was told pâté and onion ! We didnt eat them all. The small scones, muffins and cheesecake were old ! Scones were brick hard, mine never even tried them. I said to the waiter that they were not fresh and his answer was they were just overdone !!!! No way, I am a baker and they were old ! Really disappointed as this was a girls get together and I had bought it with a groupon voucher. We decided to leave the table and sit and have drinks at the seating area, quite a lot of drinks actually as they were very reasonably priced. Also the waitress actually spilled drinks over my friend (the same girlfriend twice) and she was soaked. When I asked for the bill there was nothing taken off, so I said to the waitress that there was nothing taken off the bill for the inedible food. Cut a long story short they took the price of that we paid for our voucher , but that does not make it alright !!!! I am all for trying out what the students make (we have had lovely food at Telford College) but don't fool people with old scones and cakes !!!

Came here on a Groupon. Once you turn into the college its not obvious where the restaurant is or where you can park. Eventually we found it on the 3rd floor which does have great views. It's hard to review this restaurant fairly as it is a college so decor is basic. Servers are inexperienced so fundamental errors were made but expected- lacked a bit of attention, white wine served in red wine glasses etc. Menu was a bit limited 3 starters that required no cooking. That was soup, goats cheese or prawn cocktail. 4 mains on offer again all very basic. Desserts was brownie with ice cream or pavalova. Brownie was nice but oddly the meringue on the pavalova was a cheap shop bought meringue. Overall judging on par with other restaurants its only average

Make sure you check the website for details as each day, it is run by different students. Monday and Tuesday for instance is junior chef - school pupils on the hospitality programme. Prices reflect their inexperience and are much lower on these nights. Wednesday and Thursday is master chef - third year students. Weekends are for the commercial restaurant which we absolutely love. The food is delicious, all beautifully presented and just right in terms of portion size to allow you to have all three courses!! The prices are unbelievably reasonable in comparison to city centre. In addition, there are always offers on at various times in the year. The restaurant itself is on the top floor and offers beautiful views of the Pentlands. However, the restaurant was understaffed (not a problem for us because we ordered quickly and don't mind having a glass of wine or two) and the girl was a bit run off her feet. Neither were we!Beatifully presented food, not huge portions but very tasty . I had the smoked salmon terrine and beef bourginion, which was very tender. The others tried the sea bass which they said was lovely. Judging by the clean plates, that speaks for itself. Views over Edinburgh and surrounding area while watching the sun go down added to a very enjoyable evening. We look forward to a return visit.

We go here from time to time for meals and it is good to see the young people learning their trade in the kitchen and dining room. On our latest visit we took advantage of an offer of two courses for £12.95. Excellent it was too. We both started with arrancini and followed with sea bass and steak pie. All well cooked and presented by a young enthusiastic staff. No draught beer but several excellent bottled beers on offer. A bottle of wine for under £12. What good value!

Well, who'd have thought it! I was invited for " an early supper" by a friend and ended up in EH5, the training restaurant for the college. What a great idea! I loved it. My starter was pea soup with a small salmon steak, topped by a poached quail egg. Delicious and perfect! I followed with brie and pear tart with almond potato croquettes. Again, really tasty. My friend had a blue cheesecake starter with finely sliced pear followed by roast guinea fowl which she declared superb. My cabinet pudding was light and tasty but the fruit coulis was overly sweet and my friend's chocolate mouse with hazlenut ice cream was also too sweet.Considering the staff were 3rd year trainees they did a great job. Polite, efficient and smart. Now, the price! Well, UNBEATABLE! Oh, it's also licensed so a nice glass of good Merlot went down well at £2.25p! This is such a great concept so I hope people will go and enjoy it and give good feedback.I'll be back for sure!

Me and my two friends went to the restaurant on Wednesday 21st May for dinner. When we arrived we were welcomed by the friendly smiling staff and seated with an amazing view of athurs seat and the pentlands. The menu was excellent with such a great choice of three starter mains and deserts it's was a difficult choice to decide what to eat. It was such an elegant menu 5* top class. It was without a doubt the best meal I've had in ages and can't believe it was all put together by a chef in training I would have paid triple what I did as the quality was out of this world. The price for the meal was extremely cheap and well worth a visit to sample this extraordinary cuisine. Well done to all the students see you again soon for a lunch to try.

Gave this restaurant another try and found it had improved greatly. Service was good and portion sizes were also good. A big difference from my last visit. We had 3 very good courses. All very tasty and presented well. I had salmon quiche , which was very light. Followed by very tender duck . The home made sticky toffee pudding was delicious. We really enjoyed all our courses. The chef did a great job.The price for wine is really cheap at 2.25 a glass. The only minus with this restaurant is that it does lack a bit of atmosphere.I will definitely be back.5 pm have a good offer for this restaurant at the moment 3 courses plus a glass of wine for 2 people only £25.

Awful service and very small portions. We were not asked if we wanted drinks and water was not left on the table. One of our main courses was totally inedible, yet the waiter never enquired why. Told him discreetly to tell the chef, yet when our bill came (well over £100) this meal was still on the bill. It was taken off, but we will not visit again. They need to review their waiting skills and increase their portions if they want people to return.

This was not our first visit but sadly we won't be returning. The excellent table service was not matched by the food. We both ordered the starter special of chicken coujons with sweet chilli dip. Both portions arrived blackened by being fried in oil that was too hot which resulted in the chicken losing all moisture, the lettuce served with it was brown and wilted I sent mine back but my husband didn't want to make a fuss so ate it. I was offered another starter but chose not to wait for a replacement to be made, and opted for a sweet instead. Our main was Shepherd's Pie. To be fair it was piping hot and looked really nice, but it had no taste and no gravy so it felt like eating dry hamburger, the topping was sweet potato I think. I had expected traditional white potato. Unluckily for my husband the lamb mince was full of peas which he hates. My sweet of Bakewell tart and ice cream was nice but my husbands cheese and biscuit selection was exceptional. So well done for that. I realise these student chefs are in training and don't deserve too harsh a criticism for trying their best but the indigestion I left with and a bill of nearly £40 including wine was sore to bear.

After visiting the restaurant previously we had no qualms about visiting again as the service and food have been fab. This time however the service was awful we were offered drinks at the bar as we were a bit early then once our table was ready we were offered water and that was it for an hour an a half we asked for drinks and waited and waited. Eventually we had to go to the bar to ask again but when the came we were finished our meal which was a struggle without drinks, we actually shared the only glass of water we had! There was around 7 other diners in so there really was no excuse. Great food again but due to the poor service it really has put us off visiting again. A feedback form will be posted to Eh15 let's hope they act on it as its such a nice venue.

I can only hope that there are different teams used in the restaurant run by Edinburgh College as the team we got last Saturday were indeed poor (except for the staff member on the bar area). While the setting for the restaurant is stunning it was not matched by the food or indeed table service. Our server was quite "dour" though we got the sense he was incredibly nervous and we therefore felt for him. One of the main courses we reqeusted was not available )within 30 minutes of the restaurant opening) which was really disappointing. Our first courses were REALLY bland and I left mine. Sadly my main was worse - all I could taste was oil - and had to leave that too.We have both put this down to the restaurant having a bad night but, sadly, we will not go back under any circumstances. The taste remains.

This may be a catering training restuarant but you would be hard pushed to find a better restuarant and added bonus is how reasonable it is. A meal of this standard for 2 people with a bottle of wine for under £30 is not something you will find. The views from the restuarant are very good as you look out over Arthur's Seat, it was a shame we were there in the evening and it got dark quickly, so we could't enjoy the views, but that gives us an excuse to go back for lunch!!

MORE AT TripAdvisor

We have dined at eh15 for a couple of years and have always been impressed by their set course lunch for just under £10. However, they have recently done away with this and replaced it with an all day a la carte menu. This appears to simply be a way of getting more money. For starters the food is just the same as always. When we first dined there we used to look forward to trying the different dishes they offered yet now they just seem to offer basic food such as salmon, chicken, pork and about three different burgers. As for the portion sizes they seem to get smaller every time we go. I had the soup to start (£2.75) which was very nice but apparently you now have to pay separately for bread at a cost of £1.50 for two. I can only call this petty. I have never been to or heard of a restaurant where you have to buy bread separately with soup - certainly not at such a cost. Furthermore, when it came to ordering main courses the prices listed are not actually correct as although the salmon cost £7.50 we were informed by the waitress we had to - like with the bread - buy vegetables separately for £1 making the price £8.50. The portion of the salmon was small and as the for the mashed potatoes (which is the only type they now serve, except from chips!) I could have done with double the amount; despite this I cannot fault the quality of the food which tasted nice and was served hot. However, although the size of the portion was small, it was adequate for lunch. If I was going at night I would be disappointed which begs the point of how eh15 can justify people paying the same amount of money in the evening as at lunch. For a dessert I had the sticky toffee pudding which was £3.75 and about the best value of the day. Another complaint however is that you no longer receive complimentary tea or coffee with your meal with it costing £1.20. This means that for my meal alone the total cost for three courses came to £15! (without bread with soup or tea/coffee) This is highly expensive for lunch, especially at a training college. There are many places in town which have cheaper three course lunches and which serve food of a similar quality to eh15. I have never heard of anything so ridiculous as ordering separate vegetables at lunch, not being served bread with soup or having an a la carte menu which means that after going two or three times you would run out of things to eat. Furthermore, I cannot see how this can be beneficial to students - after all the whole purpose behind the old rotating set menu idea was so they could be taught to cook different things. Overall, I am disappointed by the changes made by eh15 which seem to be based around making more money than what their customers want. Perhaps this a la carte menu would work better at night but it certainly does not for lunch. I, and the other four people dining with me, all agreed we would not return for lunch as it no longer represents the value it used to, which is a shame as we have always been pleased with it in the past. Eh15 has to realise that they cannot expect people to pay in excess of £15 (if you were to have a drink and tea/coffee) for a three course lunch - not when I know of many professional establishments which do three courses for £10 - 15 and where the quality/portion size is similar if not superior to that of the food served at eh15.

Although this is a catering training restaurant it really is great quality! We got a voucher and went in, as soon as we walked through the door we were welcomed by lovely staff member and shown to our table - which had a fantastic view! (if you book, do ask for a table next to the window!)We had the set menu and ordered a bottle of wine. We were given bread and butter and out starters arrived promptly followed by mains and we were given time to decide over dessert. The prices are excellent for the standard of food. Some other restaurants I visit frequently often give you teeny (albeit delicious) portions for inflated prices though it really is the opposite here - and still delicious!I do recommend that everyone eats here at least once. The ONLY thing I didn't like was the school-type clock on the wall above the service station - get some nicer decor! :)The service was efficient and the staff were all really friendly

The previous Menu was good, the new Menu is better. There is something for everyone and the portions are amazing value. The service as always today was first class and its encouraging to know that the students will eventually be let loose on the general public. I want more people to know about this hidden gem on Milton Road but at the same time want to keep it to myself. Today three courses with a bottle of Pino Grigio came to £26.62 as the food was discounted by 50% for those trying the new Menu. What a steal. I reserved a table using the online booking system and there were no hitches. Stand outs today were Ian, The Restaurant Manager and Gordon who must be one of triplets as he seems to be everywhere in the building at any given time. EH15 is a must to visit if you are a local, passing through or a tourist en route to the seaside. If EH15 were in Town it would be 4 times more expensive and very highly rated.

We have lunch here a few times a year and for £10 it's very good value. The restaurant is on the top floor with fine views out over Arthur's seat and Edinburgh. It can be quite busy as it gets better known and you probably need to make a reservation. The menu offers 3 or 4 choices for each course and the food is freshly prepared and served by the students. They change the menu regularly and the portions are modest but well balanced overall. We have not had a bad course yet or served the wrong thing so it's well supervised and definitely recommended.

This restaurant is generally average to good, provided you do not compare it to some of the other catering training restaurants, especially including another one which is also in Edinburgh which is excellent. Not the EH15. We try to visit as many these kinds of catering training restaurant establishments in as many cities we visit. For £9.50 for 3 courses, it is not expensive. But value is relative. Compared to that other Edinburgh catering training restaurant, that was only £6.50 (and £5.00 onspecial offer months), this does not offer as much value. The quality of the ingredients at the EH15 did not seem so good either - turkey cubes, braising beef, chicken . The other training establisment offers duck, sea bass, guinea fowl, rack of lamb (no kidding, it's true!), etc, etc. The 3 course at the EH15 does not include coffee, the other one includes coffee for 3 courses and £3 lower price! Even presentation, the EH15 could not beat them. Both are subsidized by the City Council, alas, the residents of Edinburgh!Another catering training restaurant that was very good was in Seville, and for lunch, that was only for 5 euros, and the quality was also better.Having said that, the EH15 does provide a very good view of parts of Edinburgh city. At lunch time it was beautiful, for dinner, it would have been quite sumptious. However, the service was not so good. Bread rolls which were offered were half the size of ordinary rolls. So I asked for another but the waitress student told me,"We are short of rolls, sorry" and she seemed quite smirk about it too. I was so taken aback I nearly fell off my chair! The menu seemsed but the items listed were not too imaginative - starters included leek soup, or a turkey kebab. Main courses included choice of braised beef and chicken a la king. Desserts included choice of profiteroles , and apple pancakes with ice-cream.The first course we ordered was turkey kebab on basmati rice - the turkey seemed rather dry on the skewers. The waitress came to ask "Is everything alright?" So we told her about the turkey. She just walked away as if nothing has happened. We just wondered what was the point of asking if everything was alright, and if it wasn't alright, she did nothing about it?We have to say that the main courses was not too bad, nothing too special nor imaginative, but they were quite nice really. The Chicken a la King for the main course was the same as the rice that was served with the dry turkey kebab, but the rice was quite small matter. For desserts, we had the apple pancakes. That was probably the best of 3 courses. Also , the cooks did make some effort with the presentation - they deserve credit where it is due. They had a lecturer but she was standing away in the bar at the end.We hope that the lecturers for this Catering training restaurant would read this. It is not a bad restaurant but compared to other similar traning restaurants, they can do a lot better. Everything from the level of imigination of the menu, the presentation of meals (except the dessert, that was good), the standard of training of the student waiting staff, and even the quality of the ingredients for the price they charge - they could all be improved. What could not be improved, perhaps, was the view (and the dessert). We cannot really blame the student waiters/waiters, but it is up to the lecturers to train and teach them to improve their standard of service. It would help if these students could be encouraged to have a presence of mind and be able to react in normal restaurant situations. But alas, you have to give these students the benefit of the doubt. After all, they are only here to learn.Would we return to the EH15? Maybe, if the lecturers/management improve the standard of the restaurant, we will. But we will not be going back in a hurry!!

Reside locally to this restaurant so am well aware of what it aims to achieve. It is part of the Jewel and Esk Valley College where the restaurant is used to train in all aspects of the restaurant trade. That being said the students are carefully monitored in what they do. From first welcome to paying the bill you are well looked after and made welcome.A very good quality three course lunch is £9.95 (although you can simply have a combination of a two course meal) whilst dinner is £19.50 (again with the option of a combination). The restaurant is licensed and again the drinks prices are extremely fair. The food is excellent quality and would shame some better thought of establishments. I have visited a number of times and have never had a complaint. The food is well cooked and presented.I have nothing but praise for this restaurant and as another reviewer has stated customers are also assisting with the training of students in the catering trade. Please visit you will not be disappointed. One other point is the view from the restaurant is simply superb looking across towards the Pentland Hills and the centre of Edinburgh.

EH15 is the external appearance of the catering department at the Jewel and Esk College [http://www.jec.ac.uk/index.php/the-club/eh15-bar-a-restaurant] so the students are here to prove themselves as they near graduation. Loads of Edinburgh folk (and many from Portobello therefore, that being the location) go there, and it's usually packed, so you must phone and book rather than just turn up.Top floor views up to Arthur's Seat and the centre of Edinburgh. For that reason outdoor seating is limited :-)Are you taking much of a risk? No. The food's better than many up-town restaurants. And the prices are very good - you'll pay much more for this quality in established restaurants. Timings might be strange if you're unlucky, but they have (had when I was last there) a ferocious maitre d' keeping an eye on things. My mum swears by the place and takes her pals regularly. You can't say better than that.
