We, my girlfriend and our little girl have been visiting ghurka paradise for years now and I have just started to use trip advisor and made sure that my first review would be for this fantastic little gem in spondon! We both grew up in the area and recently moved further a field but will always come back to ghurka as there is simply no other curry like it! It's so fantastic only your taste buds can describe it to you so get yourself down and try their amazing food! Absolutely lovely owners man and wife and all the staff really make you feel welcome and are a pleasure to talk to! Thank you ghurka for making my taste buds feel great, my stomach full , and most of all my girlfriend smiling when I say shall we get a ghurka tonight haha! 5 ***** just brilliant!!!!!! Thanks ghurka! Mark

We went to this restaurant on a Thursday evening and it was very quiet, in fact, i think we were the only people in there for the majority of the meal. This was funny because the food was brillaint and the service very good, perhaps we were just lucky, this meant the food was quick and we had a wonderful meal with a nice restaurant all to ourselves. The place looks like it was decorated recently so its all very nice inside, there is plenty of parking around the back too, so great for a rip from a little further a field. overall, highly recommended.

My husband and I have visited a lot of Indian and Gurkha restaurants in the Derby and Notting ham area. There are some very good ones, but not many as good as this one. It's not the smartest, but it's family run and you always get a warm welcome and great service. The food, especially if you try the Gurkha specialities is excellent - fresh and tasty I love the Chicken Sagamartha. We've recommended it to quite a few people and they've invariably agreed with us, and gone back again.

Food has always been a top notch here. Service was also fantastic. Only problem i had was the beers that they were not cold at all. I requested cold ones but still no one came to replace the cold beer. I know it was busy but they had plenty of staff running around to get the work done. Our table was being missed. Overall i may come back but on a weekday.

Just returned from our first visit to the "Gurkha Paradise" in Spondon, i was looking for something different, local without having to go into the city centre, read the reviews and thought why not, all the recent reviews were amazing! Now ive eaten there i can understand why, what a place and what superb food - all washed down with a gurkha beer, also amazing value for money. All in all a find, and certainly wont be the last time i visit this gem of a resturant.

Went out to try the Gurkha Paradise for a birthday celebration. Having never been here before didn't know what to expect but was so pleasantly surprised. The friendliness of the staff, the pleasant decor, and the food. The excellent food. Some would say it's just a variation on the usual Indian cuisine, but no. With subtle differences in taste and the dishes available it really was an excellent change, one that will make us go back again, and probably again.Well worth a trip out of Derby.

Gurkha managed and Gurkha staffed, far too many sub continental countries try and serve Gurkha food for novelty to appease British diners but this is legit authentic, they do offer other Asian foods just incase other people in a party like to stick to the Standard Asian dishes that are knocked up for us Europeans, onto the welcome, as I left it a little late to dine I was a little worried I wouldn't be able to have a sit down meal but I was comforted by the manager going to his wife in the kitchen and asking if they could cook for one more customer, within seconds I was seated and my order was taken with the reccomandation of which meal I should go for as I'd eaten Gurkha food before whilst serving with Nepalese people for the British army, I continued to chat with the manager and he was fantastic, even let me pose for a pic with him, the food was as I expected it, fresh, spicey and presented deliciously, I intend to visit this place every week from now on as it is absolutely superb and something different from the usual curry house, the decor is good also with the crossed Khukuri knives on display and newly refurbished dining area, top class!

We went last Friday on spec and got seated straight away. We have visited the restaurant previously with friends. We decided to start with poppadoms and pickles which arrived swiftly. They have five different pickles on offer four of which are delicious the fifth is an aquired taste. We then had chilli chicken and chilli chicken tikka to follow which was delicious, the naan breads we're light and fluffy. All in all a very tasty and reasonably priced meal. We have booked for this Friday.

Dined here again on Saturday night. Once again the quality and the flavour was excellent. To start we had the mixed meat starter which consisted of various nuggets of spiced delight. The mini samosa and mint yoghurt that accompanied it was succulent and expertly spiced. Butter chicken that followed was beautifully balanced and the mushroom rice that went alongside fluffy and full of flavour. I've said it before and i'll say it again, this is the best curry i have ever eaten and I cannot recommend it enough. Please try!

Visited the Gurkha Paradise with friends for the first time. Restaurant was full with plenty of atmosphere. Greeted at the door with friendly staff with the ladies in traditional dress and went straight to our table. Due to the restaurant being full there were no menus available to start with so they took our drinks order and we chatted whilst we waited for one to come available. Menu was very good and varied, well explained with lots of wonderful traditional dishes to try. Starters came quickly but we had to wait a while for the main. It was all worth it though because every dish was beautiful, presented in little cauldrens and buckets. One of the best curry's I have ever tasted. Very pleasently surprised when we got the bill too. Great food at good prices. No wonder it has the gained such a wonderful reputation. Will definitely be returning.

Attended for a mid week evening meal, the restaurant itself was rather quiet- perfect! Nice chilled atmosphere, no pushing of expensive drinks etc. Order was taken by a polite chap- fresh cutlery after starter provided. We had chicken tikka madras and a lamb medium spiced curry, both very tasty with decent amount of meat. The lamb fell apart in the mouth- delicious. Not the flashes of restaurant, but the food quality was lovely. Will be returning.

Was told about this restaurant ages ago by my nephew but as he was a twenty something starving student at the time, we didn't take much notice as he also rated tomato sauce on pasta as a top meal. Years later, we just chanced it. The first whiff of a good restaurant came when we noticed it was full; at 7pm. Lovely guy (LG - owner?) turning people away with sad regret. Fortunately we came to take-away. not to conquor a table...and we asked LG to put a selection of starters together for us, along with a couple of curries, pappadums and a nan of course - well there were two of us dining. The starters were incredible; a fusion of Chinese/Indian and clearly Nepalese. Little spicy chunks of chicken, kebab, potato in spices etc etc. It would take a very greedy person to dive into the curries but both were soooo good. We thought they tasted home-cooked and almost with the depth of a stew - which we liked a lot. We've been there every week since and son, 17, loves it too...so much so he went out for a meal with girlfriend last Saturday and still scoffed our leftovers. And did I mention how lovely the lovely guy was - and the other staff too who now greet us like long lost relatives and not cheeky so and so's after a reasonably priced take-away. Talking of which, if the taste of the food isn't enough to grab you - the cost of it will have you forever in their debt.Be warned though; it may ruin you for every other Asian locally.....

This is a local restaurant for me and the food is of a consistently high quality. It is reasonably priced and the staff are extremely friendly and attentive. The inside of the restaurant is nicely laid out, but the decoration could do with a little tender loving care and the fish tank cleaning! Apart from that, I would highly recommend this restaurant. The food is also consistently good when deciding to order take away, which is rare!

We went for Valentine's dinner, had to do an early table reservation as they were pretty booked up. The servers including the owners were very friendly and attentative. We were not rushed to place our order. The food came out pretty fast. You can choose whether you want your spice mild, medium or hot. The flavour of this food is just amazing. Needless to say we booked for the following Saturday again and again we were not disappointed. We ordered from their take-away menu on a Friday evening and the delivery was quick and again we could not fault them on taste or portion sizes. I will recommend this restaurant to anyone that enjoys tasty food. I can't rate them on families with children, but I would imagine children would manage to eat the mild flavoured food as it does not contain chili's. 5* and above by far.

First impressions for those looking for appearance over substance may enquire within. Yes, there may be more fancy furnished places to dine but why do you visit a restaurant in the first place? The food of course! Food here is divine. Try the Lari Guess Tikka, followed by the Gurkha Special Karahi. It's curry, but as you've never tasted it. Every flavour comes through and amazes the taste buds with the Ghurkali influence. I tasted herbs and citrus notes never noticed before in Indian food. Lovely service by the host, who I assume was the manager. He was attentive and informative, telling you if he thought some dishes might be too hot for the palates we described. If he warns you it's hot, it's hot! Take his advice! Great service from the rest of the staff/family. Will definitely return, for takeaway as well as a sit down meal.

We have used this restaurant for a few years now and also have take aways most weeks. It used to be really nice and different but For a few months now the food has not been as good as when they first started. The owners are lovely people but it's all gone down hill in my opinion. We always go about 10.30-11pm on a sat night and if there are not any more customers in they start clearing up around you and turning lights off so makes you want to hurry and rush your food. It states on the door that it is open at the weekends until 11.30. If they don't want to serve after 10.30 then they should say. They now have started to forget part of the order for take away, you then have to wait until they bring the rest so have to warm it up. The chips look and taste like they have been cooked twice. The last straw was last night when I found a very sharp "chicken" bone in my curry. No good saying anything just won't be eating there or ordering a take away again.

Excellent menu - as well as the usual dishes for an "Indian" restaurant, they had a variety of Nepalese dishes too. What struck us most was the obvious fresh ingredients within the cooking - most impressed! Our only criticism was that we had to ask three times for a glass of water for my wife, whilst my pint of beer was delivered immediately. But the service was good, quick without being too quick, and very friendly. We will certainly be going again.

Visited this lovely restaurant on my own whilst on business in the area. I had read the many fine reports in Trip Advisor and I'm pleased to say all the good reviews were 100% accurate. On arrival i was greeted by really charming hosts at this family run restaurant, so polite and friendly.I travel all over the world on business and always try an asian/indian restaurant, I must say this one features in the top 3 I have visited after 20 years of travelling the globe. If you haven't yet tried Gurkha food yet, then think of it as similar to the usual Indian but with one major difference, Gurkha food is like Indian used to be years ago when Indian restaurants used to prepare good food instead of the lesser quality of today. You can taste the difference, as this restaurant does not add all of the salts and chemicals that cheap rate Indian restaurants offer....... How do I know.... Well I am a trained Chef specialising in Indian food. So take my word I promise you will not be disappointed!!Thank you so much 100% perfect!!!

We are vegetarian and although we find plenty of choice the owner always tells us that if we give him a couple of days notice he will make something especially for us. The first time I went I couldn't find anything on the dessert menu which tickled my taste buds. I fancied something rice puddingy. Just give me a few minutes, said the owner. Ten minutes later we were presented with a spicey milk pudding, specially prepared and not charged on the bill. And the Gurkha beer - a perfect partner to a spicy curry.

I think I have tried just about all of the dishes on the menu ! If your looking for a starter I would recommend either chilli paneer , cheese in chilli or lamb choila , minced lamb .The style of Gurkha cooking is very similar to indian cooking but I would prefer Gurkha style, also a couple of Gurkha beer are must too !! We went on a quiet Sunday night and had a delicious meal with starters, pickles, main and drinks for 2 all for less than £50. The service was excellent, it really is a friendly family run enterprise with the owner (a genuine ex-gurkha) greeting at the door and seeing you out at the end. The food was very tasty and freshly cooked, it is also nice to find some different gurkha choices on a menu.

Over the last thirty years or more I must have eaten in hundreds of " great curry houses".Sure, this is no "Benares", nor even " Anoki". But if you want to experience fabulous home cooking in a welcoming and friendly environment, then look no further. This place hits the spot every time, and for a fraction of the cost.Well done.I wish you all the success you deserve, as you're clearly a true familly business.

Ate here sat 5th oct food lovely quality produce, excellent choice. The service was friendly but as they were busy we felt at times slow. We had our main course cleared but no one came back to offer more drinks or desserts if they were available for over 45 minutes. Such a shame as it's a lovely place with great food.

Have been to the Gurkha Paradise once before and thought it was certainly good enough for a return visit, so opted to return last night for my Birthday. So to start with the food... have to say all in our party thought it was 1st Class with not one complaint. Being a 'Hot' Curry addict I normally opt for your run of the mill madras/vindaloo/phal when visiting your conventional curry house... However last night, opted for something more traditional from the Gurkha menu and was not disappointed choosing for a starter & main of the hot variety. Both of which had the desired heat together with the distinct tones of the Gurkha spices very apparent. In relation to the service, the owner and his family just cannot do enough for you, having worked with Gurkha soldiers I'm pleased to see this is reflective. My wife had rung ahead to let them know it was my birthday, I turned up to a decorated table with balloons and cake thrown in (at no extra cost) :-) - Can only recommend you try this place, you'll not be disappointed!!

Extremly friendly staff, great menu, don't miss the Gurka part of the menu it's really good and doesn't have the after effect of some curries. Explanationations and suggestions and freshly cooked. It's a hidden jewel. Should be higher up the list of restaurants in Derby. Very reasonably priced to.

Visited this restaurant for the first time on a Saturday evening. We are both big fans of Indian food and tend to stick to going to the same restaurant but we decided to give this one a try as the customer reviews were all very positive.and I can see why.The lamb in the meal was beautifully cooked and the presentation was lovely too.The owners were very welcoming and realized we were "newbies" and came to have a chat with us.Will definitely be eating there again.

I have now visited this restaurant on three occasions and had three takeaway meals over the last year. In each and every instant the food has been fantastically consistently good, each meal made to a high standard and each dish having its own individual taste (no sharing and thinking well that looks and tastes a bit like yours!!!!. From the outside, I can understand why some might just drive by (main road - they just don't know what they are missing!!) but once inside it has a comfortable homely feel to it. The restaurant is a family run business and you couldn't ask for more from their hospitality. There has always been a warm welcome, no fussing if your group are slightly delayed, no hurrying up so the table can be rebooked, what more can I say - my other halfs birthday on Friday - Guess where we are going to celebrate????

First time at this restaurant but went with regular patrons and can understand why they keep returning as I certainly will.Relaxed setting with excellent, attentive and at times slightly eccentric service but always knowlegable about the choices we made - Advised mine (Jeralee Kukhura?) was hot but tasty and wasn't disappointed.

Firstly, Please dont judge a book by its cover as inside its really relaxed with plenty of space & nice traditional music.A great welcome from the owner, his wife and daughter and youll be seated immediately with no messing around. Booking not necessary but maybe at the weekends.Weve been comin to Ghurka now for about a year we were introduced by friends and have been about 20 times since !! We absolutley love this place, its so reasonably priced, the service is SPOT ON and the food is ALWAYS very tasty, hot and plentiful. We have tried various things off the menu and would encourage you to try a curry off the "Ghurkali dishes" section on the menu. These are something very special giving you the opportunity to taste something different. They do the traditional Rogan Josh,Bhuna,Dansak,Jalfrezi etc but we specifically like the Sagarmatha,Bhutuka and the Lasuni. Would also recommend for 2 of you sharing off the starter menu the "none vegetarian platter" and the "khasi ko momo" - these are 2 very nice starters - gorgeous infact !!If your reading the reviews then go for it you really wont be disappointed it really is a hidden secret .. Enjoy ;).

My husband and I visited here last sunday having read the good reviews and living local. We decided not to book and pop along with it being a sunday night. The restaurant was empty but the service was good, the owner came out and had a nice chat with us but not intrusive and the food was very nice and tasty and cant be faulted. Price very reasonable also. The food is a cross between asian/ indian with alot of indian dishes easily recognisable. We had 2 starters, 2 mains with a rice and a naan to share with 2 drinks each and the bill was just over £40. Very reasonable. Staff dont rush the courses and you are left to enjoy your meal with lovely subtle music in the background and a lovely fish tank! We will definately be coming again as well as recommending it.Thanks for a lovely evening.

The starters were excellent and since they sussed that I liked hot and spicy they brought out a hot and spicy sauce made just for me for the onion baji's. My wife and I had two fantastic main courses, both from the Gurka part of the menu. Menu also offers traditional Indian curry's. Go for something special - go for the Furka dishes. The spices were nothing like I ever tasted before, full of rich earth tones and flavour in abundance. Service was excellent. Bar prices very reasonable too. Total cost for two starters, two main course with two nan breads, plain rice and three beers came to £35.00. Excellent value for money. So stuffed we couldn't possibly eat pudding, but saw some for the next table and they looked great. Will have to try next time.

Visited this restaurant with 2 colleagues. The welcome to the restaurant was fantastic with the owner greeting us at the door and shaking our hands. We were then seated and tried the excellent Gurkha Beer. As none of us had previously eaten Nepalese food we askedd the advise of the Lady Owner. She recommended some excellent dishes which tasted exquisite. Next time that I am in Derby I will be sure to visit again.

This is an all round great place to eat. It is family run & it's lovely to meet the women of the family as well as the men. The menu includes all the usual curries but we always go for the Nepalese section which has some interesting taste sensations. The pickle tray with the poppadoms contains about 9 different 'pickles' or sauces with some very unusual but complementing flavours. The 'momo' dumplings for starters are my favourite. Just be warned though...if the owner looks worried and tells you that your choice is 'very very hot' you'd better believe it! I can recommend the Gurkha beer for taming the heat though.Laty time we visited midweek when it was quiet & when we tried to book a taxi the owner ran us home & would not except an extra tip - now that's service!

There are several very good Indian restaurants in the Derby area and I have eaten at all of them over the years. In my opinion Gurkha Paradise serves the best indian food I have had anywhere in the UK. Don't be put off by the location or the appearence from the road. It is run by a lovely family who are always friendly and polite and the food is just fantastic with a great choice of classic Indian dishes as well as some more unusual Nepalese selections. I have used Trip advsior many times to find the right restaurant. This is the first time I have left review of my own, but having eaten at Gurkha many times I feel I owe it to the resturant owners to tell others just how good it is.

The Gurkha Paradise is out of town, doesn't look much on the outside and the carpark is tiny, but don't let all of that put you off. This place is well worth a visit. The staff are welcoming and the food is wonderful. All really fresh, nicely presented and tasting great. One word of caution though... Asking for 'hot' (which I did) you need to prepare yourself. Mine was mightily hot!!!I have only one complaint about the Gurkha Paradise and it's a very minor one indeed... I'd just like to see more 'Gurkha' dishes on the menu. I can slightly understand why places would want to cater for as many people as possible, but the reason we visited was to specifically try Gurkha cuisine and something a little different. It wouldn't really take many visits to exhaust the Gurkha choices on offer.

It's our 6th visit to Ghurka Paradise and our 2nd review ... This place deserves to be rated #1 not only for food quality but value and the great welcome you get from the staff :) they genuinely want you to have a nice time and that gos to show with the owner greeting you and asking how your meal is ... Nothing is to much trouble & you are made to feel very welcome & relaxed. Pops with a choice of 6 dips (all homemade) are gorgeous .. really fresh and crisp.Would defo recommend the meat platter for starters along with the dumplings (me and my partner always have that & share) Would recommended choosing one of the chicken dishes off the specials section we've tried most of them now and they never fail to please .. Don't do puddings as we're always to stuffed so can't comment on those. If your reading the reviews yours obviously thinking ov visiting Ghurka .. Do it and hopefully , as we were when our friends first took us - you'll be raving about it ... Enjoy :)

This was our first visit and we just called in without booking - even with the snow around at the time, the place was quite busy, but we were shown to a table within a couple of minutes. We were met with a warm welcome including a handshake from the owner. Meal was fab - really well flavoured and nicely presented. The staff were great and given that a large party were also in at the time they coped admirably. Will definitely visit again.

I think the previous reviewer must have had 3 very unlucky visits. We have now ate here about 5 times & still love everything about the food. We always highly recommend it to our friends & not one person has complained. Staff are so genuinely lovely, you are never made to feel rushed unlike a lot of restaurants. Food is gorgeous & freshly made. It's just a shame that from the outside you probably wouldn't want to give it a try. Nice to see it getting busier aswell as people are getting to know about it. When we first tried it, it was number one on trip advisor. I think the couple of poor reviews which have obviously been made by the one of the competitor curry houses down the road are unfair to gurkha (the bad spelling gives it away)! So give it a try & recommend!

I was one of the first people to write a review on this restaurant singing it praises. Unfortunately, the last few times we have been there (1 meal and a couple of takeaways) we have been left really disappointed with our meals especially the takeaways. The portions have been cut down and the curry container is only 2/3rds full whereas it used to be full and the meat, well what meat we have only got around 3-4 pieces in a dish. On the occasion where we have eaten in, the service has somehow lost it friendliness and ambience. I do hope this is just a case of being unlucky but 3 times, mmmmmm.........???? Sorry Gurkha Paradise :-(
