The King's Head in Stratford-on-Avon

Having been here a few times and had lovely food and a warm welcome 5 of us went for Sunday lunch yesterday. As a previous reviewer has commented, when greeted we were pointed in the direction of our table without menus or a promise of a drinks order being taken. There were only 2 people serving food and drinks, the pub wasn’t overly busy but as we walked to the table we heard a table of 8 who had seemingly only received half of their meals chasing the rest of their order, so it wasn’t boding well. A couple came in after us and had a similar welcome. After waiting for 15 mins we finally had our drinks order taken, but still no menus. After another 5-10 mins we received our drinks and menus. We then waited for another 20 mins before someone came to take our order. Only 2 of us were having starters (soup and a prawn cocktail) came after approximately 15 minutes, and once cleared we then waited for another 35 minutes before we saw our main courses which we had to chase. The couple who had come in before also had a long wait, although they did get their food a lot quicker than us. The sea bass was nice, but the roast beef was 2 very small pieces of meat which was luke warm, as were the vegetables. It’s a shame as we have enjoyed quite a few visits here, but yesterday’s will be our last as now reading some other reviews it wasn’t a one off.

We decided to eat at the Kings Head despite reading a few negative reviews and we are really glad we did. It was a busy evening but they found a table for us even though we had not booked. All staff we encountered were friendly and helpful and we had no delays. The food was excellent and very well presented. We are only in the area for a week but we hope to be able to fit in a second visit.

Visited for Evening Dinner on 21 September , small and full of history in the centre of the village , a number of locals having drinks at the bar and very friendly to visitors , service was quick and freindly , food order Steak for me and Vegetarian for partner . Both cooked to perfection , the vegi side salad was like a meal on its own and got praise from my partner . Cost reasonable , and nice to have a bit of banter with the locals

Was keen to try out this pub due to the menu looking great! Walked in had a warm welcome! then we were not taken to our table we just got a point to which table was ours! we sat our selves down to a sticky residue on the table! Lovley so not only the staff don’t sit their customers down they don’t bother cleaning the tables they sit their customers down! The food was average won’t be rushing back!

One of my favorites pubs ruined, no atmosphere,no people and nobody seems to care. Ordered food 8ish no food by 9.45 when I enquired told ticket lost, we walked. On this evidence this pub will be out of business in the near future.

I am surprised to see mixed reviews here because our first visit was an excellent one . The welcome was good , the local ales and wine lovely and the home made suet beef pudding spectacular with the best cabbage we’ve ever had. We sent our compliments to the chef then and we do again here now . Met some Belgians on the way back to the camp site and they were equally impressed. This place deserves patronage

Having moved into the area we thought we’d try this local pub. Haven’t been here for quite a few years. We’d read the bad reviews but I know some people are picky! Should have listened. I rang at 6.00 & got a table for 7.30, was rather surprised as it was Friday night. I ordered fish & chips. It was undercooked on the outside & mushy inside which made me think it could have been cooked from chilled or frozen. There was no crispy batter it was completely soggy. Completely tasteless. Peas very strongly flavored of mint. Told the waitress who said she’d tell chef! At the bar I asked what single malt whiskies they had & no one had a clue what I was talking about. Selection of young waitresses were all very pleasant. Would not return & definitely wouldn’t recommend, such a shame as it’s a beautiful pub.

There was great promise, and the place is beautiful. However the food was just 2 notches below... Strange use of watercress on the garlic bread for children! Sweet peppers in the chilli linguine, and totally tasteless creme brule...accompanied by soggy shortbread. It could be absolutely brilliant with just a little more thought. Not one of the staff asked us how the food was, even though we left lots on the plates. Sad.

Really disappointing. Six if us had dinner. Two that had linguine complained about the small portions as did the friend that had fish and chips. Very poor and over priced. Staff was excellent.

Lovely back garden with plenty of tables. There is plenty of tables inside too. The Sunday lunch was absolutly superb!! Everything was freshly cooked really well and the roast beef was perfect. Not the cheapest but definitely value for money!

I took 18 for Dinner here last night for my Wife’s Birthday. We had the whole of the back section of the Pub which they decorated for us so the room looked lovely. We had pre-ordered the food and it was absolutely delicious. The most popular dishes were the Kedgeree Fishcakes and the Tandoori Cod. The chilli chicken/beef was also a big hit. The Staff all looked after us all very well. A fantastic evening overall…..thank you very much!

We have been to the Kings Head several times for family meals. On 2nd April we were very disappointed with the food. The prawn cocktails were average, we ordered two chicken main courses to be told they only had one left. Four of us had roast beef. On mine and my husband,s meals the roast potatoes were hard, the vegetables were overdone and the two small slices of beef had a lot of gristle. At £18.50 each this was very disappointing. However the lady who served us was amazing. I doubt we will return.

Just returned from a wonderful late Sunday Lunch with friends. Smoked Salmon for some and gorgeous prawns for others to start. Some had rare roast beef with all of the trimmings and others enjoyed either Pork or harissa Cod, all were delicious.

Excellent! Been before but the food just as delicious before. Great ambience and service very good. I felt the staff managed Covid risks very well with a clear one way system, spaced tables and obvious cleaning. Can’t wait to come back

Having been to this pub in the past it was convenient for my friend and I to meet here as it falls between our homes and we just wanted a quick drink and catch up. Due to current restrictions I checked on line to see if we needed to book outside tables - the website said they were Coivd 19 safe and booking outside tables was recommended. I rang up and was told that they do not book outside tables. I mentioned what it said on the website and was told that was now incorrect.We turned up at 8.00 pm and walked to the pub from the car park. There was a 'station' with hand sanitiser and a sign saying to wait to be seated. A flustered young lady came up and said we could sit anywhere in the garden that was free. We were not told to use the hand sanitiser and no track and trace details were taken at all (isn't that a legal requirement?)! Quite shocked, we made our way to a free table. It had obviously not been cleaned as there was food all over it - we both thought tables had to be sanitised between use? I gingerly sat down and my friend went to get drinks from the outdoor hatch. I watched other people leave tables which were then filled without any cleaning or sanitising. I also saw a group of 13 young people squashed onto one bench table. Eventually (as we felt so uncomfortable) I went inside and politely asked if someone could sanitise our table when they had a moment. The young lady came out almost straight away but she didn't spray all the table and certainly didn't clean the bench seats - what my mother would have called 'a lick and a promise'. We still didn't feel comfortable. As the tables filled up, people were then standing around with drinks which again, I thought wasn't legal at the moment. None of the staff wore masks or visors.In the end, after one quick drink we left as we didn't feel safe and I didn't want to have to use the toilets. I have been to several other establishments who follow the rules and have felt perfectly OK, and it makes me cross that they may have to shut down because pubs like this one are not following guidelines and rules.

This is the first time we have used this pub mid-week for a lunch as all our other visits have been on a Sunday. Needless to say ,we was not disappointed at all. The food was very, very good and as always the staff very polite and helpful. To us this place is slightly up market to what we normally use, but is well worth every penny and as they say "you only get what you pay for" and this pub certainly delivers. Cannot fault at all and we will certainly be back and good to see it up and running again. One of our quality reliable pubs.

In 2019 we looked high and low for a country pub to have our wedding. Bret not only shut the pub on a busy Saturday in August for our sole use but made sure that everything just as we wanted.The location is beautiful, the food was wonderful, everything was perfect even the rain couldn't dampen our spirits. (photo from 2019)We visited again this year post Lockdown and had a wonderful lunch and then took the children to the nearby playground which they love. The King's Head is a great place to visit and andan even better venue to hire. Couldn't recommend it enough and we will always return.

This pub came highly recommended for all kinds of reasons. However, on Monday, there were four children running around the tables and shouting. Not acceptable in an upmarket pub.We particularly wanted to eat in the garden because of the lesser risk of infection. I was surprised that the staff did not deal with this matter.If you're happy with children running around your table, you'll have a great time!We eat at the Arrow Mill, near Alcester, instead where incidences like this are dealt with swiftly.

We had a superb Sunday lunch here today. We had called to reserve a table for a family of 4, but once we arrived we asked if we could eat in the garden to enjoy the lovely weather. This was no problem and we enjoyed the full choice of Sunday menu plus garden specials. We were very impressed with their handling of Covid-19 precautions with hand sanitiser and social distancing etc and ordering and payment for garden dining/drinking was through a window hatch. Like another contributor, I feel compelled to write this review in light of another review posted on 24 July. I have been to the Kings Head 4 times since lockdown was relaxed, most recently for dinner last night with friends and today for a drink in the garden. I also had several takeaways from there during lockdown. I have nothing but praise for the landlord and his friendly staff and the lovely food. Like all businesses at this difficult time, they are having to work out how to best organise things and to adapt as they go along, as are we as customers. They deserve all the support that local people can give!

We had a table booked for 6 adults 4 children for Sunday lunch last week. We had a drink in the lovely beer garden first before being shown to our table in the cosy restaurant.We had a huge seafood platter to start, food was plentiful and delicious We all had roast beef for main course, beautifully cooked meat, lovely roast potatoes and copious amounts of vegetables on the table to help ourselves to.Very attentive staff. All in all a really enjoyable day with amazing food. 10/10

I don’t normally post on TripAdvisor but having read a previous review I felt compelled to write. The manager and his team have done everything to comply with post-Covid rules, making it as as safe as possible for customers. Having never been disappointed with the food at the Kings Head we decided to make this our first after lockdown.We were delighted! The food was excellent, the service was impeccable, the surroundings were safe and our night was perfect. We are returning this Sunday for their infamous roast dinner because the lockdown takeaways were better than any other restaurant offerings in the local area. Go there for Sunday lunch (book in advance because last year we couldn’t get in) and you will be overjoyed. The last reviewer must have had a row with his missus!

I telephoned yesterday to book a table - we wanted to sit outside but were told you couldn't book outside tables and that the outside menu was limited. We booked but on arrival asked to sit outside as the weather was good and was again told the menu was limited outside. We then found that there were 2 tables reserved in the garden and the people ordered off the main menu whereas we had ok chicken wings and poor chips (£3.50 a bowl which was large enough as they weren't good enough to eat...............) because we were stuck with the garden menu. Don't go there.

I'm a local so I can tell you that it is a Pub and a great restaurant, very good food, nicely served by some lovely ladies.I was forced (by law) to have only a take away. So I chose the Crispy Chilli Beef with sweet chilli noodles from the limited take away menu. I wasn't expecting too much from the dish, but it was SUPERB!!It was ready exactly on time, and there was no queue, important at the moment, and it was served with a lovely smile.Well done Brett and staff!

Reasonabley priced menu in a old world styled pub plus a contemporary restaurant room. Two gardens available when the weather permits. There is plenty of choice but the stand out dish is the Duck trio well worth trying.

Really disappointed after having read the reviews. The food was pretty tasteless and nearly inedible. Left feeling short changed and left with out dessert ( which is a big deal for me!!)

Had a family meal to celebrate our son and daughter's birthdays. Different main meals on offer we all tried different dishes but also had pub classics too for main meals. Food was excellent and all cooked to order happy to wait as not quick - understandably. Only disappointment was the choice of sweets which we found limited . They were different but felt they could have also offered pub classics for this course too. Service was OK and prices varied on what you chose so needn't be too expensive. Also a little off the beaten track but nice large car park. Would advise booking as a popular restaurant.

Table in the bar so Pooch could come too. Lovely traditional atmosphere with a cozy but not too fierce wood burning stove. Staff were lovely, the beer was kept really well and the food was exceptional. We shared the chilli beef thank goodness because it was almost a meal in itself. The special Indian style Pheasant was amazing, as was the Duck. Couldn’t understand why the place want fully booked - must have been Storm Dennis!

Had a nice evening meal, I had the home made burger and my dad had the sea bass, all presented well and was really good food, my first visit as not local but my dad is local and hasn't been for a few years and was very impressed. Regular visitors here spring to autumn but not during the winter. We booked Boxing Day lunch in the bar area for 6 and the food, atmosphere and experience was top notch. We all had great food and would totally recommend. Chris

Outstanding Sunday lunch, everything from the service to the gravy was perfect. The restaurant wasn't crammed full, we weren't rushed and the atmosphere was spot on. We will definitely be going back very soon even with the hour drive, it was well worth it!

Another wonderful night at the Kings Head, food and service fantastic (the staff are so hardworking and pleasant) But the star attraction was a visit from the Village carol singers, really really wonderful. Thank you too all.

Lovely traditional country pub restaurant. Great to see the locals and their dogs in the bar - so many pubs are now mainly restaurants. We prefer to eat in the bar as it has more atmosphere than the restaurant and is warm and cosy. The menu choices are excellent and very different from the local gastro pub chains. The scallop and the crispy beef salad starters were superb as were the sea bass and the fish and chips. Great welcome and service. Definitely my new favourite local place to eat.

Just had Sunday Lunch with family at the King's Head and we thoroughly enjoyed our experience there. The atmosphere was cosy and welcoming, the menu had somethig for everyone, the food was delicious and the service was friendly and accommodating. I can recommend this pub to anyone looking for a quality meal.

5 of us in group. Good sevice, efficient personell. Food perfect especially the duck. We all ate different meals but all were very good.

We were visiting the churchyard next door and looked in on spec and found it very busy. The landlord said all the tables were booked but we could have one if we promised to be finished within an hour and a half. This was no problem. The meal was served quickly and the staff were very friendly and helpful. We had plenty of time for two courses and a glass of wine, and never felt rushed at all. The roast beef was classic, cooked to perfection, and there was plenty of veg. We would be happy to go back any time. But I would book ahead on a Sunday!

A wonderful evening last night at the Winemakers Dinner. A sumptuous five course Dinner with wine pairings and a very interesting dialogue from the guys who supply the wines. The food was nothing short of stunning, and as always served by the lovely and very welcoming front of house team. Fantastic evening all round!

The venue I had booked for a party of 13 was unable to honour the booking owing to some problems they were having. The owner contacted the Kings Head who agreed to fit us in with only a couple of hours notice. The food and service was excellent and we all thoroughly enjoyed lunch and would highly recommend it.

We were a party of 14 with 3 vegetarians. Years ago we used to come here but haven't been for about 20 years. We went by the webpage and as we found out is way out of date & needs to be updated. It was a 2 or 3 course lunch. We chose 3 courses for £23.50 pp. With such a large group I wasn't expecting the service to be quick. When the food arrived it was delicious and we were all extremely pleased. The vegetables are all served separately which I prefer. A recommended venue for Sunday lunch.

A delicious dinner in a small village, Aston Cantlow, near Stratford upon Avon. Worth the 10 minute drive to experience fine food in a relaxed country atmosphere.

We were looking forward to our late afternoon Sunday Roast after a full day in Stratford and thought The Kings Head would be perfect as we had enjoyed good food there previously. How wrong we were!

We arrived at 7.45pm as the website says food is served until 8pm on Sundays. We were told that this is a mistake and it is only served until 7pm. As there is nowhere else to eat for several miles and a taxi would have cost over £30, we felt very disappointed. We returned to the campsite and had packet noodles.

After hiking from Billesley Manor to your lovely establishment we had a large group that were thirsty, hungry and rather demanding. Your staff did an incredible job of setting expectations and going above & beyond to give us an excellent experience. Lily went out of her way as well the other young lady working to ensure our delight. Thank you so very much for the experience.

My wife and I visited this venue for dinner, and were really pleased with our choice. The menu had a good range of options, for all courses, and the service was excellent. The atmosphere was really relaxing and all courses were delivered in a timely manner, we could not fault anything, it was a really pleasant evening.

We had booked a table for 4 after having this pub recommedned by a colleague. The greeting was nothing special probably because we arrived promptly and they were still preparing so we had to stand around for a while until they were ready. The menu differed to the "sample" one on the website and in this day and age it is easy enough to have an upto date menu on your website. It didn't start well as neither my chosen starter or main course was not available leaving only one vegetarian option which was really disappointing. This was carried through at dessert when my choice was again not available 3/3 has never happended to me before.

Used to go there many years ago when they did traditional duck suppers. They don't do duck suppers but the food we had was excellent. The service was very good, friendly without being too much. Fresh vegetables are grown in their own garden. Lovely setting and looking forward to our next visit.

Visited here last month whilst staying at Island Meadow. Staff were amazing and so helpful when my daughter fell and banged her head in the beer garden. Prices are reasonable & the food is really well presented. Only planned to stop for a quick lunch but ended up enjoying the ambience & reading many of the newspapers from the bar area for several hours.

We thoroughly enjoyed Sunday Lunch at The Kings Head with our three sons. Good variety of choice for each of the three courses. Lovely big Yorkshire puddings and fluffy and crisp roasties-delicious. My husband’s beef was spot on and he really enjoyed his favourite Eton Mess for dessert. We hope to return very soon.

We booked as a big group for a meal on Saturday evening. The food range is very good and prices are reasonable for the quality. Think we paid about £40 per head which included starters, mains and only 2 puds but did include lots of drinks (wine, gin and tonics etc). Everyone enjoyed their food! We had a lovely evening and felt really relaxed, not rushed to order or finish. The staff were lovely and friendly. We will definitely pay another visit when we return to the area.

We visited as a family group of four adults and two children aged 7 & 5. We had mixed breads and olives to start, then main courses for the adults and children's dishes for the little ones followed by deserts for all. Beers for the three adults and gin & tonic for the other, fruit shoots for the children. The total bill was £130 which we found very reasonable. There was a good range of choices on the menu and the food was excellent and served without much of a wait. I must particularly compliment the staff who were very good with the children and serving us in general; but particularly in helping one of our party who has Crohns Disease and has to be careful to check what is in her food. A well stocked bar with a good range of real ales, a lovely atmosphere and a great beer garden all contributed to a very nice early evening outing. There is ample parking behind the pub.

Called in upon chance without a reservation & was instantly met with a smile & a can-do attitude; none of the typical, ooohhhh-ing & ahhhhh-ing or head scratching when one announces one doesn’t have a reservation, so a refreshing approach & welcome.

We ate lunch here with friends.Menu had standard pub favorites plus other choices. Good choice of imaginative starters. Food well presented and cooked. Service a little slow

I ate here with friends on a miserable wet June evening, but we received a lovely warm welcome.

Lovely atmosphere and friendly if a bit slow service. Food was really good, would recommend the lamb tagine, the duck trio and even the hand cut chips, nothing frozen about them. Theres a lovely outside space if the weather is good, and plenty of parking, would highly recommend this restaurant.

If you want to lunch in a welcoming bar/restaurant, with friendly staff and high quality food and wines at non-Michelin prices, look no further than the King's Head, Aston Cantlow... Brett and his team provide a brilliant service and I can’t wait to return!

We had a meal in the Bar. The food was very good a bit different than just pub food. We had a bottle of house wine which was very good and a reasonable price. We shall go again!

Saturday 27th April 19, my husband and I went for dinner at The Kings Head’ in the village of Aston Cantlow.

We had two meals at the kings head Sunday lunch and popped in on the bank holiday Monday. Food is excellent, little pricey but you only get what you pay for.

A great evening! All went to plan and all 18 members thoroughly enjoyed the excellent food. Second year we have had a Pub run here and brill both times. Staff friendly and helpful.

Recently moved into the area and have been trying all the local hostelries for a good lunch, this place did not disappoint,although we hadn’t booked,lots of the tables had been reserved( always a good sign)
