The Star Inn in St. Helens

Whent for my sisters birthday dinner ,was a great dinner food was superb especially the beef and lamb dinners, I had the fish hake which was very good nice and tasty ,vegetables where the best we had in any pub or restaurant we will be back,staff very friendly and welcoming nothing to much for them they're a credit to the team .

So good I’m going again this week. Good quality food , excellent service and lovely atmospher. I’d recommend a visit 😀

Love this place ,great service and amazing food

This was my first visit to the star and I was initially impressed by the bar and lay out it is much bigger than I expected. I was there with a large (over 30) group of friends and the staff coped admirably with serving such a large number. I thought I had found a new venue to suggest for my book club monthly meetings until the food arrived. For me the food was so salty it was close to inedible. I wasn't alone in finding the food very salty either. Please remind your chef that salt can be added at the table by the customer but cannot be removed. It spoiled my first impressions and unfortunately I will not be back.

22 of us booked in for mother in laws 80th. Dropped off balloons and banners and was welcomed and staff/owners were extremely helpful and friendly. One family member got held up but they were happy to hang on before bringing starters. We'd pre-ordered and food came swiftly with a decent gap between courses. The food itself was delicious. First visit for me but I'd heard good things. So good I went for 3 courses. Highly recommend and will definitely pay another visit. The bar itself looked nice and country cozy👍

My wife and I hosted an evening dinner for her 80th birthday at The Star Rainford last Saturday night. The Star catered for meals for 32 people main meals, starters and puds.and were enjoyed by all our guests. All the meals were served at the same time and all were hot and tasty just as you'd want. The staff on the night were without doubt brilliant down to the boys and girls serving meals and drinks and the front of house ladies. Emma, Lisa, and Chris who were the perfect hostesses all night and are so very friendly and have always been very kind to my wife. The food served was so numerous to mention but as a regular customer at the Star I can say that the food is excellent with a good choice of meals. My daughter with the help of The Star decorated all the tables to create a lovely and warm atmosphere. If anyone is considering were to hold a celebratory dinner this is the place to go food excellent, wine good and very reasonable plus Wainwright's beer. If dinner is not to your taste The Star do a fabulous lunch special with all the food you'd want Fish and Chips', lunch time mixed grill, and wonderful steak pie to mention just a few. All in all a fantastic restaurant run by wonderful people.

Traditional British pub/restaurant. My latest visit with my wife was a very pleasant experience as what we have come to expect. As always friendly atmosphere and very good food. Plenty of choice from the menu and they have a specials board, which changes every week. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend. Friendly, efficient staff, happy vibes , what more would you want?

Nice atmosphere with friendly and professional staff. Varied menu with superb food and a well stocked bar. Plenty of room between tables even when restaurant was busy.

This was our first visit here, we’d heard good reviews and the experience didn’t disappoint. Nice atmosphere and all the staff were welcoming, helpful and pleasant. The food we ordered was lovely, well presented, hot and plentiful - overall a really nice meal out, thank you.

First class restaurant serving very fresh food by pleasant happy staff, very good choice with ample portions. One of the best restaurants in the area, Nave recommended it a number of times.

We go regular and take friends there, because you know the meals are 5 star plus. Unlike some local ones who let us down very, very badly.

A group of 10 visited last night for a meal,food,service and atmosphere all excellent and the staff are superb,a great night was had,keep up the great work.

Very welcoming and friendly staff. Very relaxed atmosphere. Nothings changed here, still great food, the family that own and run the pub/restaurant are great. The staff are young but very well trained and polite and attentive.

Lovely place in Rainford village. A wide choice of real ale was on offer, my Coach House - Postlethwaite was in fabulous condition. The food menu looked amazing, although I didn't eat. Quite busy for a Sunday night on my visit. Well worth a visit and I will again 👍

We always like going to the star, when we are over from Spain. To meet up with my cousins. Fantastic food and service at a good price. Very friendly, good services, the steak pie today was delicious. Thank you. See you again next year we hope.

Best pub in rainford by far. It's got everything but sky sports.

We called in on a Monday, so I couldn't comment about the food, but the place was welcoming and the choice of beer was very good and well served . I will definitely be going back on a food serving day, when I am next in the area

I go regular to the star inn, every single occasion I go, the food is always delicious. The atmosphere is always top class. It is a lovely country public house and no need to change. Contrary to previous posters review we had no problems whatsoever at The Star. We dined twice over a 3 week period, food was beautiful on both occasions. The waitresses, yes are young girls, but very helpful, and, hardworking when we were there. Also the pub is a country pub, updating it and modernising it would ruin it.

I truly hate to put not so great reviews but I feel that I have to criticiise here as the last time that I visited here the stardards and enthusiasm of the place was very high, Visiting last month though proved very disappointing, it was like a visit back to the 80s but not in a fun and retro trendy way but as though nothing had ever moved forward. The decor and furniture was depressing, shabby and the menu very lack lustre, missing a lot of adventure or imagination. The older staff were very friendly and polite and especially nice and helpful was the male waiter. The younger female waiters looked and acted like they were just here for pocket money or to save for university. Nothing wrong with that if you are able to seem like you care about your job and even have some interest in it. To sum it up. I know times are hard but they are for customers also. I believe there is a lot of room for updating and refreshing, which could be quite exciting!

Came here with my Best Friends. Food was amazing. And staff were very nice an polite giving us Good Service. Food at good prices! Could definatly and Happily come back here again for more food. We've been coming here for ever, and the service and quality never faulters. If you want great food cooked from fresh in comfortable surroundings, served wigh a smile, or just excellent pint, this is a really great place to start.

Always great food. I'm vegatarian and love Hallumi and chips. The chef always cooks it in a separate fryer than the fish as I become ill with fish oil. Thankyou

Pork too tough to chew, all three meals, everyone left half. The staff didn't apologise when told just took the plates away. Very poor compared to our previous visits.

Not been here for a long while as you really need to book to get a table but the reason for that is because it's so nice. We managed to book a table Good Friday evening and took friends who were over and so glad we did. The food was lovely, the service ladies good and we all really enjoyed the meal. Would recommend.

Went with family , 6 adults, the ambience and food were just as I remembered and expected, very friendly and lovely, best place around for a good meal ( home cooked ) and choice of ales. Will certainly continue going back.

From when we entered to when we left, the welcome, the service, and the food were excellent. Our party was there for Sunday lunch, but A'La carte menu was available. Staff were helpful and friendly and always around. If you go, you will need to book in advance as it gets very busy. And because of how busy it gets, parking can be a problem. Highly recommend

Salt and pepper ribs, roast lamb dinner and lemon cheesecake all wonderful. Restaurant always busy which says it all.

Really brilliant meal at the Star Inn in Rainford.Had the fish combo a yummy dish and generous portion with Salmin and Sea Bass.Very busy for a Wednesday lunchtime. Could do with being doggy friendly and that would attract even more patronage. Have 2xKing Charles Spaniels that enjoy being with us and a sausage each as a treat!! Overall very enjoyable lunch meeting up with an old school pal

Had a 3 course Christmas lunch and every course was exceptional. Such a lovely well run family pub never had a bad meal and was not disappointed either, the roast beef was melt in you mouth the gravy rich and the roast potatoes had a nice crisp edge with a fluffy centre, plenty of vegetables to top your dinner up with and the brie wedges with a rasperry sauce was a perfect combination. This was finished off with perfect tirramusi. The staff and service was faultless as it alway is, just wish i wouldn't leave it so long in between visits An excellent meal out worth every penny. Thanks to all staff at the Star.

Great restaurant with some great lunchtime specials and a full extensive menu. Lovely staff and great beer from Wainwright's, we have been going to the Star for years and have never been disappointed.

Love this place, the food is fantastic, great menu choice, service is excellent, staff are really polite and look after you very well and are you feel very comfortable. You are given time to eat your meal at your own pace rather than being rushed as some places do. Would definitely recommend a visit.
